Error 0x80070057 During Clean Install On New Hard Drive
Dec 19, 2011
I decided to replace my hard drive because it seemed to have viruses that were making it run incredibly slow. I put in a brand new hard drive and proceded to run the Windows 7 Ultimate disk. I got as far as the beginning of the actual installation (after telling it what partition to put it on) and it ran for a few minutes and then I got the errror message 0x80070057.

I'm doing a clean install on my computer, and it's going alright until it asks me to choose which hard drive I want to install Windows 7 on. Apparently I have 2: a C drive and a D(Recovery) drive. What should I do in this situation? Should I just install on the C drive, or should I do what it says here: Partition the Hard Drive in a Windows 7 Install and delete the partitions and create a new one.

I have download windows 7, backed up all my drivers and copied all my important info onto my external Hard drive and am about to try and clean install windows 7.
But do i have to partition the hard drive? My Dell laptop has a 110GB hard drive which came already partitioned. 10GB is called 'Recovery', do i need to do the same and make a larger partition and install Windows 7 or just leave it as it is?

I bought an HP desktop about 2 years ago with vista 64 bit on it and it has been crappy ever since. I've had problems with programs not being recognized, things not installing at all when they should, and it freezing up for no good reason. Anyway, I went out and bought Windows 7 ultimate the full version. I saved the few files I have on a jump drive and I want to completely wipe out the hard drive and install windows 7 and start from scratch.

I purchased an Inspiron 15R today and wanted to do a clean install of Windows 7 right out of the box. I'm using a Windows 7 disk from another machine.I formatted the drive and all of it's partitions (recovery etc.) and installed the OS. After booting though I get sent to an error screen that tells me Windows had an error starting up and that I should choose a way to startup with the usual safe mode etc. No matter what I choose it sends me to this screen. So I booted from the disk again to attempt to format and reinstall, but now I have no disk drives to install to.
I have run a diagnostics check and nothing seems to be wrong, the HDD is still being recognized in the BIOS. What can I do to get my HDD back and showing up in the install destination options?

I am trying to install windows 7 ultimate x64 on a new build, I am getting the error in thread title when it begins to install. I've scoured this forum to see what others had similar issues and tried the fixes. I tried with one stick of ram, tried re-burning the iso, i've used 3 different discs one 32 bit the other 2 x64. The funny thing is, I have installed ubuntu 10.10 succesfully from a usb flash drive, but could not install ubuntu from a disc. The ubuntu cd was not a burnt copy but a legit disc i ordered from canonical. the windows install wizard lets me create partitions and delete them, it even looks like it tried to format the hard drive because when i go to attempt to install again evidence of the previous failure is there as a system and primary partition. since the 10.10 installation from flash drive went without a problem i do not believe there is a problem with the hard drive. the dvd drive is sata and is connected properly.
my system info is as follows
amd athlon II x4 630 cpu at 2.8
4gb ram
asus m4a78lt-m motherboard
wd caviar black 640gb HD sata
lite-on dvd multi recorder sata
ati xfx 512 mb video card
my boot settings go to the hdd first and i tried using the popup menu to boot from disc, for some reason it looks like it has a problem writing from the dvd drive to the hard disk.

In doing a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate (32 bit), an error appears when it gets to "Expanding Windows Files". Error 0x80070057. Had a look to see if any others had the same problem and many did. I've tried what others have suggested including wiping the hard drive etc etc. Now the strange thing is I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate (32 bit) (same as the one above) already, on the same laptop, with the same hard drive and everything and it installed without a problem!!

Originally got message - Disk read error occurred press ctl alt del to restart. Then tried plugging this drive using a USB connector into my desktop PC to see if I could run some chkdsk. Then my desktop PC displayed messages telling me my firewall and virus software had been turned off and the computer crashed. ROOTKIT? So I was left with 2 drives not working. I re installed windows on desktop but using ISO on flash drive BUT can't on the 500GB Hitachi HTS545050B9SA00 for some reason. Windows setup loaded and Deleted old partitions and formatted. When I tried to install, it froze. It now just boots up with a windows loading screen and I'm also unable to boot from flash drive as it freezes. This is on a Sony Vaio VPCEB4E4E.

Hard drive is full but not really. I think it is a virus because I removed a bunch of programs and there is very little in computer and it said I had 9GB available the next day went to 180KB free out of 296GB. I can't even take pictures off to wipe out and start over.

I have a PC on which the hard drive died. I had previously done the Advisor and it said everything is OK for new install of Win 7 Home Premium.
I removed old hard drive and 2 gigs of memory (now 2 gigs installed) installed new hard drive, set appropriate ( i think) BIOS parms. When I start the DVD I get the 'loading files' message and the colorful logo then a blank screen with a large arrrow cursor -- and nothing. Wait 5, 10 15 minutes and the only hint of activity is the hard drive light is flickering about once every 2 seconds. I've now waited for over an hour and still nothing else.
I've tried to do all the things that have been suggested for others who have had problems but it hasn't helped. Machine is a Dell 4700C with 3.4 GHz processor , 2 gigs of memory, only keyboard, mouse, and monitor attached in addition to the hard drive.

I am very lost, I have a IBM ThinkPad T42 with an older 20Gig hard drive that is blank, no OS on it, nothing at all. I tried to perform a custom clean install of Windows 7 and get to the part where you can format the drive or install drivers. When I select to install the drivers it can never find any.
What am I doing wrong? I know a little but I guess not enough, do I need to install fro somewhere else? and what drivers is it looking for?

I have an old Dell XPS Gen2 desktop that is running WinXP. I wipped my Raid0 hard drives to perform the install of Windows7. After helping the setup see my raided hard drives, I started the install.
After the second step in the installation process I keep getting an error message that says something like: "Windows could not configure your computer's boot sequence. The installation could not continue"
Does anyone know what I'm missing? Could my bios be too out of date for this setup? or is it something else?

I have Windows 7 rc running on one of my 2 ide drives, with XP on an SATA drive - dual booting.
I purchased a 500gb SATA drive to replace the the 2 ide drives
The plan is to:
- connect the new drive while shutdown
- boot into XP
- Partition new drive, with the first partition active(with partition Magic).
- Transfer non-OS partition data to the new ones
- shut down and disconnect the ide drives
- insert Windows 7 disc and perform install on first partion of new drive.
I understand that the MBR is on the Windows 7 partition.
Will I have any problems with the XP install, or will the new Windows 7 install create a new MBR to allow dual boot?
I know I'll have issues with drive letters. But other than the XP, and Windows 7 partitions it's just data - no programs.
Or, are there any other problems you see with my procedure?

I have a Samsung series 9 (NP9004XC) and I am upgrading the 128gb SSD that came with the computer to a Crucial M4 256GB mSATA. I am doing a clean install from a bootable USB that I created from the recovery disc that was included with the computer.I can load up setup but once I get to the part where I choose what disk I want to install it to I get an error. There is only one disk listed (Disk 0, Partition 1) and when I try to select that disk to install Windows to I get the error:"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

I want to do a clean install of my purchased Windows 7 from Windows 7 RC. The problem is I have a lot of data that I want to keep and since it is about 500GB in size, i have no cheap way of backing it up (obviously considering buying another HDD, but i'd rather not for now). I was thinking that maybe I should partition my 1TB main HDD into 2, and transfer all my data over to new partition, format/clean install the old one and lastly merge the partitions. Is this possible?

After my Vista installation bombed out, I decided to upgrade to Win 7 x 64 ultimate.
After I run the installation, I delete the old partition, and create a new one.
Windows installation then gives me an error: "Windows could not format partition on disk 0.
The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code 0x80070057
There are some help articles related to this, but they are all "in-Windows" solutions, whereas I can not boot into Windows.

The laptop was running slow and I decided it was time to clean things up and get her running like new again. Backed up everything and wiped the drive using KillDisk.Three and a half hours later when the process was done I popped in my Wndows 7 OEM disc only to be greeted with the dreaded Unmountable Boot Volume on that pretty blue screen . Tried several times but it's the same thing each time.

After saving money for quite while, i was able to finally buy a new pc, i had assembled other pc`s for my friends and never had any trouble installing windows on their systems, but now, every time i try to install windows 7 x64, the computer hangs while extracting windows files, then, after some time it prompts me with the error 0x80070002, saying that it didn`t find the required files, so i tried with many suggestions:- Updated to the latest BIOS.- Switched the RAM modules from A2 and B2 to A1 and B1 (my cpu fan was in the way so i had to buy another, and yup, i`m living on cup noodles).
- Ran memtest x86+ for 8 hours (no errors)- Ran sea tools but it didnīt detect any drives (still donīt know why, and the windows 7 installer detects the hdd just fine, also tried it on another computer and works fine)- Switched sata cables, switched sata connectors.- Switched from ahci to ide on the Bios, but it didnīt detect any drives after that, so i returned to ahci.- Disassembled all the pc and re-assembled it, re-checked every connection with every install guide 3 times- Tryied to install again, several times, with the same problem, never getting beyond the 48% extraction, mostly 12%, 9% and so on.And right now, iīm poor, un-able to work, and dangerously nearing towards un-employement (sold my previous computer to buy this one, my savings are gone, and canīt afford to get sick, a little problem called "living in Mexico"
