I have been working with RW2 files on this PC without problems for 6 months and all was normal last night when I shut down as normal. This morning I switched on to continue my work and the window with RW2 files showed just blank icons. I clicked on one and got the message "unable to open this file type, no supporting program" or similar, usually it opens a preview window at the side and will open in Windows photo viewer with a double click, but now nothing. JPG files still display and work fine and all the RW2 files open normally in lightroom 3.6 when I open that. I rebooted but the problem persists. I then looked at system restore and there were no restore points for this month and it gave a list of 5 programs it would erase, which I had updated/installed a few days earlier so I decided to look for another way first (I have very bad internet so do not want to have to download those again). Everything has worked fine with those updates for several days so I suspect it has nothing to do with them.
So my laptop was working fine last night, woke up this morning and this issue appeared. I'm guessing it's a virus (stupidly, I haven't installed an AVP on this machine yet). Anyways, I can't open anything. Doesn't matter where I try to open the program or file from. The load icon appears but nothing happens. I also can't access the task manager or shut down/log off/etc. from the start menu, I get a "Failure to display security and shut down options" error msg. I'm in safe mode with networking right now, which is allowing me to open programs. I've already tried a system restore but it didn't solve the problem.
When I was installing the 64bit drivers for Windows 7 it gave me the following log after installing the Catalyst Control Center. The Ati Display Driver failed to install properly.
I am having this problem where my monitor just goes blank and then a few seconds my desktop comes back as it was before. I have been getting a message sometimes after it happens saying something like the display driver failed but has now recovered. I had a more severe version of the problem just a little while ago where the monitor had gone to sleep and I could not wake it with the mouse. I actually had to reboot to make it work again. I've looked in device manager and looks ok there, This is a very new computer and has just had a fresh install a couple of days ago so I cant see it being anything major.
Win 7-64 on Gateway FX6860 i7 system 8gm ram tons of HD space. Got "Page Failed to Load" error attempting to change my Windows 7-64bit display resolution. This used to work, but no more ( don't know what might have caused it). I ran "sfc /scannow". SFC reported that there were corrupted files that could not be repaired or replaced and to look at CBS.log. I did but can make no sense out of it.
I'm trying to install Sophos and there fore the following ports need to be open: 8192, 8193 and 8194. All firewalls are disabled. But when I do telnet ip address 8192 (where ip address is the ip address of the problem pc) from the server I'm getting the following error message: Could not open connection to the host, on port 8192, connect failed. It's the same result for the other ports.
I am unable to open "Computer", "Control Panel", "Devices and Printers" or any of the other options when I click on the start icon in the task bar. I receive the error message "Server execution failed" I have Windows 7 operating system.
I'm having errors with Windows media Player and Media Center. I get a message that says server execution failed and Windows media player wont open. Media Center will open but wont play audio files.
My wife has Windows 7 home premium x64 on her laptop and is using Word 2007. The problem she is having is she will open a word file, change it up, save it, then re-open it later and its the old file not the new one. Where as I can open the edited file on my desktop running the same OS but with Word 2010 and the file that opens for me is the newest version.
yesterday, i got 2 blue screens in my windows 7 home premium. i have an hp envy laptop. i had updated my video driver (ati mobility radeon hd 5850) earlier in the day (although i experienced similar blue screens with my old video driver version too...the old one was also the mobility radeon hd 5850, just an earlier version). i was trying to watch an online video in internet explorer 8, and i got a blue screen. so i had to do a manual shutdown. when it started up again, i chose for windows to check online for a solution to the problem (but windows never got back to me with one, if it found it). later on, when trying to watch a Internet video, the same blue screen appeared, and once again i had to do a manual shutdown. it may be related to my ati mobility radeon hd 5850, maybe even other things which i can't be sure of...also, i mentioned that i got similar bsods with my old video driver version too. at that time, i'm pretty sure i was using firefox instead of ie when trying to watch the online videos. by the way, i was able to watch several Internet videos normally yesterday, but on one occassion i did get that bsod. also, here is what at least part of the bsod said (on both occassions yesterday): "attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed"
Im having a problem with opening files I use to open with two programs. One is mkv, vob and divx files with homecinema. And snes roms with an emulator. Basically win 7 would let me select the program and it would show up on the list of programs to use. I would select always use and I'm done. But I moved the folders containing the files to a different folder and now my two programs I use will not show up in the open with list. I now have to go to the program itself and search for the files. Its a pain because I could click on the files and get right to them.
I saw if some folks screen shots, that there must be a way to cause the open programs on the task bar to display wide.. Referring to sergio's theme, and a few others. I have dug into the taskbar options, but not struck gold, anyone know how this can be done?
After closing the on screen display for Core Temp, I can't reopen it. The program's System Tray icon remains in the tray, but when using it to select "show", it opens a rather drab Windows like display, instead of it's usual one. Rebooting doesn't solve it, and going through the ini, I see nothing that appears to be for the purpose. How do I return it to it's previous behavior?
I have a program that uses it's own library. The path to this library can't be changed, and it's inside the "Program Files" folder. And the software itself has to be installed inside "Program Files" too, otherwise it won't work correctly (it's a new release and still a bit buggy). Now, when I add something to this library, it's supposed to be present in the library folder. BUT Win 7 doesn't show me any files that have been created by programs inside the "Program Files" folder. The folder where the new library is supposed to be is empty. But the library is there inside the program, so it has to be somewhere. Now, how am I supposed to backup those files if I can't access them?
I've had trouble with my machine starting. I've done all the advice the 7 Forum suggests, running start up 3 times...etc., and it will work for a day or two, then not start. Then if I hit the reset button a couple of times, it will go into the start up repair and I end up with this message:
Repair Action/ System files Integrity check and repair Result Failed / Error code = 0x490 Time Taken / 700863 ms
I've run sfc from an elevated window and it says everything is fine.
When I go to C:/users/my name/My Documents and select it, the right panel displays the files on top and the folders below. When I go to Libraries/Documents/My Documents and select it, the right panel displays the folders above the files. Most of my folders display the sub-folders above the files. How can I make all selected folders display the sub-folders above the files? None of the usual SORT routines change this display mode.
Im running a single Windows 7 Ultimate x86 OS on my laptop and it used to work very well till earlier today once I get back home trying to use my computer as usual to find out that it always runs the startup repair after showing the words windows is loading files instead of starting windows normally. Once the diagnostic & repair process is done it tells me that Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically. When I view the details I get the following under Root cause found:
After many times doing the previous repairs with no result I went to Command Prompt in order to check my system drive to find out that both Windows & Program Files directories are not existed there anymore. Instead, theres a Windows.old directory that contains those 2 system directories as well as Users & PerfLogs directories plus the autoexec.bat & config.sys files. Sure theres noway to use the system restore tool or anything else even using my Windows boot DVD. Still cant use the cmd commands single handedly to fix this.As I said earlier I have never faced such problem before plus I have no idea how to regain my windows since I can never format my system drive as I need to backup all the files, settings, bookmarks & favorites located in my user profile first.
I am having an issue with my VPN. When I am connected on the network at work I can access the shared drive not problem. At home though, when I am connected to the VPN, it will not display this folder. Everything comes up like it loaded but just no folders.
I need to display .doc,.pdf files in the slide show itself with scrollbars. NOTE:There should not be the link i.e should not moving from powerpoint slide to .doc /.pdf file.
When trying to save a file, the save dialog will not display the contents of a folder or drive in the content pane. When I click on a drive or folder in the navigation pane the content pane only displays the 'No items match your search' message. When I try to save the file in the Documents folder I get a 'The file name is not valid' message. This happens in some programs(Notepad++, Firefox, IE7) but not others(Notepad). This also happens in Firefox, Chrome and IE7 when I'm trying to upload a file to the internet(either my webserver(a Joomla CMS) or Soundcloud.com(A music sharing site).
I was trying to display Hidden Folders/files to access an appdata folder under C:Usersusernameappdata. (it's to fix an issue with the game Dead Space 2) Anyway, I opened My Computer, then C drive, then Users. In here, I right clicked on empty space and opened properties. I checked 'Hidden' and apply. Said it needed administrator rights, I accepted. Then most desktop items disappeared, most files from my documents disappeared and after reboot, The ATI catalyst control centre is popping up an error message saying 'failed to start'.I realised I chose to hide all the files within that folder instead of showing hidden files/folders..I went to folder options and chose Show Hidden file and I can see them again but they have that see through look to them. ATI catalyst still won't start on reboot. I tried system restore to yesterday but still exact same. When I go to User Properties on the C drive again, it shows the files as Read Only and Hidden is unchecked.

im having quite similar problem in restoring windows. my pc have been attacked by virus which all my files been transfer to .exe file. i cannot open any files. i wanted to restore my windows however the cd was missing. can i install or restore windows without cd or how could i use my windows using the product key attached at the casing of my pc.
when a file comes up to open and I click on it , it goes to Microsoft office , then a screen comes up saying put in your key . I have no clue as to what is happening here. I cant open files or PDF's.
Any time I try to open an .exe file, or a shortcut to an .exe file, I get an error message saying that Windows cannot find the file.I've tried moving files to different locations, but nothing works. When I restart in Safe Mode everything opens fine, so I'm worried it's some kind of virus or malware causing the problem.
I recently was perusing some unsavory websites (I'm sure you can guess) today and all of a sudden I got these messages which I started to ignore. Then it said that my flash player could not be run, or something like that. The main thing was that something has hijacked my computer, preventing me from running ANY exe file, including my Trend Micro Maximum Security; HijackThis; System Restore; etc. I called Trend Micro and they could not help me either. I think I had glimpsed something that looked like it said "worm32" which leads me to believe that it is a worm that is infecting my computer. I keep getting the same message whenever I open any exe file: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs panel." I went into the default programs panel and found about 108 extensions that the current default is "unknown application". Some of these extensions include .386, .asp, .bat, .chk, and .cmd to name a few.
