Worth Partitioning Virtual Hard Drive?

Feb 8, 2012

I have 4 physical hard drives, 2 of them are 150GB and 2 of them are 1000GB. Both are mirrored at the pre O/S level in order to provide redundancy. On the 150GB mirror I installed the host operating system (Win Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V) and the 1000GB mirror is just a Data drive. I've created my Virtual server in Hyper-V and allocated it 500GB from the 1000GB mirror. When I start up the virtual Server in order to install the o/s I will be asked whether to partition this "Virtual hard drive" i.e., have a C: drive for the virtual o/s and a d: drive for the virtual data. Of course they would be on the same physical disk anyway so should I bother partitioning the Virtual 500GB drive.

[MEMORY] Why Can't Access 746Gb On Hard Drive After Partitioning

Dec 9, 2011

I just partitioned my external 3.0Tb hard drive using the device manager in Win 7. At first I had one partition of around 2.8Tb, I shrunk the existing partition to around 1.9Tb and then Windows created 3 partitions instead of 2. I ended up with 1 partition of 1.9Tb, 1 partition unallocated of around 100Gb and a 3rd partition of 746Gb unallocated. I was then able to create a simple volume on the 100Gb partition which left me with the 746Gb partition unallocated. When I try to format the 746Gb partition all the options are greyed out - I cannot create a simple volume or delete the partition. I also cannot extend my other 2 partitions to use the unallocated space. When I delete the 100Gb partition I can then extend the 1.9Tb partition and end up with a 2Tb partition and the remaining 746Gb unallocated. Is there any way to recover the 746Gb of unallocated space? Seems a waste to have a 3Tb drive that only has 2Tb of useable space.

Windows 7 - I / O Error When Attempting To Format 250GB Drive

Dec 10, 2011

I have a 250gb drive that has not been formatted. I have an old H45 Tech enclosure from 10+ years ago, and had placed it in there to prep for NAS, as the NAS was not recognizing it either. Because I could not get it to read in the h45 box-- I was able to get it to format 128gb's of it, but I wanted the whole thing formatted to use all 238...gb of the drive, so, I bought a dynex 3.5" disc enclosure, it just arrived today, and while it read, and installed on my laptop, it would not allow me to format it. In going into storage mgmt, it said that it was not allocated, and asked me to select an option-- mbr, or as a secondary.

In looking at the notes, it said that the secondaries are only good for larger than 2tb drives. So, I selected the mbr, and got a message stating there is an i/o error in attempting to format it. Now, in plugging it in to check the message for specifics, it won't even recognize it, so now I can't even get to tell you the specific message. The pins are set to read cable select. I'm running Win7 Ultimate on a GW-M285 convertible, 500gb drive, 4gb ram.

Partitioning Drive To Prepare

Jul 22, 2009

I've got a 320GB drive on a Vista Premium Home notebook.

Few user files are actually on the notebook, rather the files are on my desktop, and are processed via the network, or temporarily copied to the notebook.

Currently, C drive is 285.04GB with 246GB free.

HP's recovery partition is 13.05GB, with 2.4GB free.

I am going to shrink the C drive, so I can add a separate partition for my own files, this partition could be shared with Windows 7.

How much space should I leave for Windows 7 Home?

I would end up with the following partitions:

C: For Vista

H: For Howard's files

W: For Windows 7 Home

Unallocated: Likely 32GB, in case I wish to add Ubuntu Linux.

D: Recovery partition for HP. I use image backup so this is not really useful.

Installation Question - Drive Partitioning

Aug 1, 2009

There was a time when I had Windows 7 and absolutely adored it.

For certain reasons I tried to go back but fail epically (yes, I'm a teenager!) and now I have two active drive partitions and it's still looking for Windows Seven's bootmgr.w/eand now I need either one of four questions answers so I can get back on my new computer. [(BTW, I am starting to hate the way I need to tweak things.)]

The questions are:If I install windows seven on my usb flash drive (which I tweaked to make the computer look at it like a USBHDD,) will it wipe out the OS on my grandpa's computer? How can I make BIOS look-up and process boot.ini instead? How can I run the Windows Vista install off my FlashHD [as I call it. :P]Is it even possible? Would it work better or, once again, is it possible to install Vista on my flash drive and use it to run on my grandpa's computer. My computer is an Acer AspireOne [I will deservingly accept flaming due to my poorness and poor sense of choice].

Installing Win7 And Partitioning A 1TB Drive

Dec 18, 2009

I am looking to use my 1TB seagate SATA II drive for my Windows 7 installation, and was wondering how I should go about partitioning it and how large each partition should be or what I sould put on each partition.

My system will be used for the following:

Computer Games that take up a lot of space (World In Conflict, Empire Total War, Battlefield 2, Call of Duty, etc.)

Music

Video files/ recordings (I have a Hauppauge tv card)

Some Photos

Basic apps like office

Data files

Which of the above items should I put on the OS partition, and which should get their own partitions? How large should the OS partition be compared to the other partitions? Seperate partition for games?

Having one giant drive might be nice to try, but then I would have no where to put my excess video files if I ever needed to reformat. The 1TB drive accomodates whatever video files I can't store on my 2 smaller drives and currently has 120 GB of video on it.

In addition to my 1TB drive, I also have 2 more internal drives, a 250GB Maxtor ATA which is filled with video files and a 200GB WD SATA that I use for my TV card and storing the recordings I make until I have a chance to edit them or move them to a differet drive.

I have a seperate 250GB external drive for backing up data files and music, so the backup issue is taken care of.

Partitioning A Single Sata Drive With Win7 On It

May 28, 2009

I got a question for you maybe you can answer for me. I have a single 1terabyte sata drive with windows 7 on it. I used to have Windows xp pro on it but i upload Windows 7, i just delete the "old windows" that Windows 7 left me. Now i have accumulated alot of files in my documents file which i use for video purposes which take up about 530 gigs.

i can't wipe my hard drive clean to install the new update rc which i recieved as a beta tester. Is there any way to partition the drive only where Windows 7 is at leaving my 530 gigs in a seperate partition so that i can install dual os's. The two os's will be Windows 7 rc and Xp Pro. the only reason i made the switch is because i built my new computer with 4 gigs of memory running core 7 processor but xp only sees 3 gigs.

Partitioning A Windows 7 Acer Aspire Laptop To Have An XP Drive, Driver Compatibility?

Jan 23, 2013

I created a partition and installed XP on it and the game installs correctly (installation wouldn't even start on Win7) and it runs. However, the drivers I got when I bought the laptop are only compatible with Win7 (video drivers, wifi/lan drivers, the audio driver works fine on XP however).Because of this driver problem, I have no graphics driver to run the game (I know it works because I can start the game and hear the audio). I also couldn't connect to the internet to find and update drivers on that specific machine.

So I searched for them on another computer but after hours of searching, downloading and transferring the files to my Acer, failed to find any compatible with XP.The Acer website which I downloaded these drivers from mentions they work on XP in the description but they wouldn't install, giving the error 'not support on this operating system' or similar.FYI the hardware for the drivers I needed were: - Lite-on Wireless LAN 3rd WiFi BGN Atheros HB97 (OR Broadcom LAN BCM57780 for ethernet connection)- Intel VGA Chip UMAHas

Clone 60Gb SSD To 250Gb HDD - Not Working So Far

Apr 4, 2012

I have tried everything by the book and have no luck. Here's the problem, I have a 4 drive setup:

-60Gb SSD (Windows 7 Ult x64 + some programs) (c)
-30Gb SSD (i)
-1Tb HDD (h)
-250Gb HDD (empty reserved for Win) (f)

As the 60Gb SSD drive is full I want to migrate the whole drive to the empty 250Gb HDD. Of course, no need to say that I want everything to run afterwards without any re-installs (also the files on i and h). I have tried many clone software (Paragon, EaseUS ToDo etc) and the clone goes ok, but it wont boot from the destination drive. Luckily enough I still have the original c drive otherwise I would be stuck! I also looked at the Windows backup and restore, but by default it want to clone all my drives and I cant deselect them (over a Tb of a backup??)

Now what can I do to get this sorted? I just want contents of the 60Gb SSD (with Windows 7) on the empty 250Gb HDD. Also, when cloned, the new drive is not 'c' anymore. How would all programs/files work? Or is the idea that you delete the original drive and then rename the copy to 'c'? I probably do something wrong, but a clean install would take days (as web designer I use loads of software and not looking forward to reinstall all those).

Upgrading Hard Drive On A Solid State/Hard Drive System?

Oct 25, 2011

So, I have a i7 2600K system with a solid state disk as the boot drive, and an older (c2008) Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB drive as the data drive for programs (that I deem as not worthy of the quick load times). The hard drive has given me some errors over time, and I bought a hard disk to replace it (a Hitachi 1TB). The issue I'm having is that the fact that Windows 7 puts a small (100MB) partition on the F3, and for some reason, even though I'm running Acronis 2012, it doesn't seem to be able to clone the F3 over to the Hitachi. I've also tried Drive XML, and for my 2 hour wait, I only managed to acquire a boot error. Thankfully, I've not done anything rash to destroy the data on the F3, but given the fact that I've seen corrupted files in Steam from that drive, I'm not will to trust it long term with my data. I really need to get the data onto that Hitachi, though... Anyone have any advice for upgrading the HDD in a SSD/HDD system? I don't really feel like it should be so hard, especially if I've bought Acronis True Image, but maybe they haven't designed their product to handle this scenario quite yet?

Computer Is Not Booting Hard Drive/Unresponsive Hard Drive?

Jun 16, 2011

I have a HP Touchsmart IQ500. Turning my computer PC on today, all I got was a blue HP invent screen with setup, boot menu, system recovery, and system diagnosis, and I could not get past it. I entered the BIOS and figured out that the hard drive was listed as "not installed." Pretty sure that is the main problem.I tried a system restore (with the Windows 7 install disc), but I guess the computer couldn't read the hard drive enough to enter safe mode (I tried restarting and F8ing several times). I put in an external hard drive, and the BIOS read it; however, windows does not allow you to partition an OS on a hard drive.

Hard-drives Apparently Corrupted After Attempted To Install A Second Hard Drive?

Oct 8, 2011

make a dualboot comp by adding windows XP to a new partition. I created the new partition with 20gb. (From the 500 of my actual harddrive)But before I actually installed on that, I got distracted with a second harddrive that my dad got(for no reason). It had a full copy of Windows XP backed up on it from another computer, so I figured I would just use that for the dualboot. I plugged it in (wired the same way as my old harddrive, but different data slot), restarted, checked the harddrive in explorer - all the data was there / reading correctly / etc, and I used 'easyBCD' to add the new harddrive to the boot list.(Which, of course, crashes if I try to start it. I just wanted to see what it would do). For a reason I can't remember, I unplugged the second harddrive for a bit, started the computer on accident (I don't know if anything loaded before I shut it off), and then when I plugged it back in.Windows 7 would not launch. It goes to a DOS-like window, except it's just a flashing _ and it never does anything even after a few minutes. XP didn't work still.. so I decided to reinstall XP (as I couldn't tell which harddrive was which on the list, I unplugged the main harddrive while installing onto the new).. and when I did this.. it formatted and installed fully... then restarted.. then restarted.. and restarted.. and just kept restarting, never showing any thing past the manufacturer logo/BIOS load-button-message-thing. So, I then try to use my 3-disk Windows7Recovery disk(burned myself with a program apparently included by the manufacturer.) It installed fully, appearing to work.. but when I launched it, it said "Invalid Partition Table" and wouldn't boot past that. When I insert my driver installer disk, it gives me a basic DOS window thing. dir A: shows the files in the disk. dir B: for some reason shows the same. C: says "Error reading from drive C: DOS area: general failure". All other letter:'s just say "invalid drive". (I'm doing this with both harddrives in.) I attempted connecting the harddrives to an old computer, but it gave an error for both. (It detected the harddrives, but said it had an error reading from it. Windows Explorer asked me to format it... {i'm willing to format one of the drives if anybody thinks it will help, but the old harddrive has data I'd prefer not to lose.} ) Looking on google, I saw several problems that all have similar problems (less overdescripptive than I am though) but none of the fixes suggested worked for me. Also - as I have two different with different errors, I only need to make one of them work.)Also - my other available computer has a CD burner / floppy drive if either are required. I also have several USB's. The computer can boot from USB's and CD's (tested), and I could easily take the floppy thingy and connect it to the computer.also - this computer is probably still under warranty unless unscrewing the hard drive voids it. .. does that count as modification of the computer?

External Hard Drive - Drive Letter Changed - Unable To Change Back?

Aug 21, 2012

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path. The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject. How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

Hard Drive Partition: Adding Free Space Back To C Drive?

Sep 7, 2012

I installed Ubuntu on my computer a few months ago and created another partition for it on my 1TB hard drive. I didn't really care for Ubuntu so I decided to delete the partition it was on. That might have been a mistake. Well, now there's 87.68GB of free space on my hard disk that I can't use and I don't know how to add it back to my c: partition.

There was another post about this a couple years ago, but I don't understand the instructions and am not actually sure if it worked. Can someone explain how to do this, please? I'm not completely computer illiterate, but I'm not familiar with partitioning disks. It was just the one time with Ubuntu.
