No Internet Access, But Can Ping Router Via LAN
Feb 23, 2012
I reinstalled windows 7 home premium on my notebook, and downloaded the NIC & other necessary drivers from the manufacturer's website. I have no other software on the N/B. When I connect the LAN cable I can successfully ping my router, but not www.google.com. I can see the other PC's on the network. The icon on the bottom right shows a yellow triangle and I have no internet access. I have an automatic IP & DNS server set in the IPv4 & v6. I have a desktop PC running Windows 7 on the network that connects to the internet with the router.
I can't understand how a newly formatted PC struggles to connect to the internet (via LAN), when my username & password is already setup on my router.
Details of notebook:
Packard Bell, i5 430M, 4GB RAM, 640GB HDD, ATi Radeon HD5650 VGA, W7HP 64

I have a little problem with installing my new router. There were quite a lot of problems with the old smc, so I've bought a TP-Link router. I installed it just alright, it said congratulations, you have internet. I don't have though, not even on the directly plugged computer. It's kind of frustrating, since the old router is still working like before. So I plugged an ethernet cable from the old router's lan to the tp-link wan and with that, the new network is working just fine. The problem with the internet access occurs only, if the router is directly plugged to the modem. (The computers do find the network but the connection is kind of offline.) I don't really know what could be the problem, since I'm a little new to routers. I've read almost everything in the new router's manual and I'm pretty sure it's installed correctly. (ISP username and password copied from the old settings, mac address copied, all ip addresses pinged, done power cycle etc..) I also tried all of this on two different computers, in case eset is in some magical way blocking the router. Turned out this wasn't the problem. Well, I may have overlooked something though. I thought about resetting the modem, but I'm a bit afraid of losing the old router's internet connection as well.

I am on a cabled LAN network with internet access. I can also access the internet through a different wireless router. When I am connected to the LAN by internet access is also through it. I would like to stay connected to the LAN network but at the same time have the internet access through the wireless. Is there a way to set this up?

I have installed windows XP mode for windows 7 and it works fine. I have even installed few apps that were not possible to be installed on win 7. I played with win 7 virtual PC and have few questions:
1. I see that system chosen 120 GB for this virtual Win XP, I was not asked about this and wonder if this could be changed. The originally C: system partition in win 7 is 300 GB.
2. When I use cmd command in run and type ipconfig, I see that correct IP address is displayed (192.168.1.65) since it works in private network and internet is working OK. But when I try to ping router (192.168.1.1) I get message that "request timed out" occurred. Of course, ping works in windows 7, and I have internet access in both win7 and virtual win xp.

Last Friday my main desktop crashed (lost power to the machine) and on restarting the PC was unable to "identify" the network. By identify, I mean, when using "Network and Sharing Centre" on the basic network information page, the PC shows "Identifying" under "active networks" - no matter how long I leave the PC.
PC details
Model: Packard Bell Power x-30
Processor i7 870 @2.93GHz
RAM: 8GB
O/S: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
Modem Router details
Netgear N300 Wireless Dual Band ADSL2+ Modem Router
The main desktop is connected to the modem router (via Ethernet). The modem router is showing no sign of any problems itself, all the dashboard lights look ok (i.e. power is on, port 1 shows the Ethernet connection in place, both wireless bands are lit, the DSL is lit and so is the internet). The household contains a number of laptops which continue to work ok wirelessly and/or wired through Ethernet. Even mobile phones are accessing the wi-fi ok.
The DNS Server address looks ok, as that is the address of the web page to the router. I cannot access that web page (address) via the main desktop, but I can from other devices ok. Having gone through Device Manager the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is showing as "working properly". I have tried pinging the DNS Server address, and that fail. I have gone through a system restore to a previous point (before the day of the crash) but that seems to have made no difference either.
I have attempted to set the IP addresses (for TCP/IPv4) directly
IP address 192.168.0.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
And therefore forced to set the DNS Server address too
Preferred DNS server: 192.68.0.1
But I don't know what to set for the alternate DNS Server, so left blank. This seems to step me forward, in that the device/network is now identified. However the internet access is still not work, as the "DNS Server is not responding".

My internet connection shows 'no internet access' even though my ISP shows the connection is coming into the house just fine. I usually use a router (NetGear-WNR3500U) but I right now I have the Ethernet connection plugged directly into my PC. I tried directly plugging into my laptop and the internet works just fine. So I know the problem resides in the PC.
Some troubleshooting things I have tried.
-Power cycled my modem, router and PC.
-Repinged my connection from my ISP(Comcast Xfinity)
-Used the reset option on the router and the modem
-I was walked through the internet options needed with the tech support from my ISP to make sure DHCP was enabled and every other setting was correct, and he cleared me that all settings were correct.
-Tried ipconfig commands to /renew and /release my IP When I tried ipconfig /renew I get the error 'An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server'
-Restored my PC to a restore point where the Internet was working
All of these options did not work.
What I think the problem is and I am not sure how to fix it, when I run the ipconfig /all command my Auto configuration IPv4 Address shows 169.254.112.76 which I was told is a router IP address even though I am plugged directly from the modem to my PC with an Ethernet cord. So I think that's my problem? But I am not sure.

This afternoon, I first found that ie8 stopped working, but chrome was still good. So, I restart the machine. I cannot get access to any websites any more even my router's admin page.
I can ping Google etc without any problem. There are another two PCs behind my router and they have no problem. The problematic PC has no problem accessing files intranet, remote desktop, ftp. I tried toggling DHCP, changing IPs, Firewalls, no luck.

I have a problem with my wireless internet card (Qualcomm Atheros Ar9485). It has trouble connecting to websites. Speed and ping is fine, but it is the connecting that often fails. I have done tests on my other computer and on my iPad, and everything works fine. I know that there is something wrong with the wifi card, because when I plug in my ethernet cable, everything works fine. My wifi drivers are up to date. I can still browse the web wirelessly, but 30-60% of the time, the connecting fails. I have had this kind of issue before (All browser slow/not loading pages) and I got the problem solved by switching wifi channels.

[code] I never had this issue on Windows Vista, occasionally my internet will randomly dropout. Limited Internet Access". When it does I can do a few things to get it working again:
- Disable, then enable my wireless card and reconnect.
- Uninstall the card, then re-install and reconnect.
- Disconnect from the internet myself and reconnect.
Either way it gets super frustrating. There is 1 other computer plugged directly into the router that does not experience any issues. In addition, I have 1 laptop (windows 7) that works great and 1 laptop (Windows XP) which works great.

I have 2 laptops - both run Windows 7 x64. Different brands (Asus G73 and Alienware M11x) with different network cards. I have found that neither will access the guest accounts on 3 different routers, all different locations and different brands. Tried latest versions of both IE and Firefox... no go. The tab shows the page is starting to load, where you enter the guest passwords, but the page never loads. It just times out.
I can get into the main admin accounts just fine, but ever the gust accounts. I show a connection via the network icon in the taskbar....then the yellow exclamation shows up. I get the popup that states 'More information is needed to log on - click here to open your browser'. But when I click on that, the browser opens but the page never does. I've set the default browser to both IE and FF... tried opening them via the click and via start button... both 32 and 64 versions...
Is this a Windows 7 x64 thing, as that seems to be the only constant between the two machines...?

I live in the UK and use Sky as my ISP.The wireless router they supply is OK as far as the internet side of things is concerned, but for a good wireless connection to my wife's laptop in the next room, it sucks.I have a spare Netgear DG834N Wireless ADSL2 modem router and was going to use this instead of my Sky router in an effort to improve the wireless range. Unfortunately, Sky's T's & C's insist that using a different router to the one they supplied could result in my internet service being withdrawn. In an effort to prevent people using a third-party router, Sky have encrypted theirs with a username and password (not the username and password used to logon for e-mail etc) that can be retrieved with a hack, but I prefer not to go down that route. What I would like to do is use the Sky router to handle the internet side of things, and then use my Netgear router as a wireless access point to give us better wireless coverage around the house. Is this possible and if so, how do I go about it?

I currently have the following network configuration:- Broadband Cable Modem (in my den) - Router (in my den) - Computer (in my den) - Wireless Access Point (family room)My broadband cable modem is connected to my router via ethernet cable. I also have an Ethernet cable running from the back of my router directly into my PC. My current setup is in my den (I will explain). In my family room (which is away from the den) I have my television and several other wireless devices (Roku box, etc). My signal strength is low in my family room due to many walls between my den and family room. I therefore installed a Wireless Access Point in my family room by running an Ethernet cable into my basement and connecting the router in the den to the Wireless Access Point in my family room. Now here is my question: I set the SSID (or network name) of the Access Point so that it is the same as my current network name (that way I see the AP on the network). Now here is where I need to understand how a wireless Access Point works. If I have a laptop or other wireless device in my family room and search for a wireless signal, am I connecting to my router (that has a weaker wireless signal than the AP) or to my Access Point (stronger because my Access Point is a foot away from my wireless devices) since they both have the same network name? And if I connect at that strong signal and walk into another room where the signal is weaker, does my laptop automatically connect to the wireless router? How do I tell if both my router an wireless Access Point are using the same SSID or network name. I guess what I'm trying to ask is where am I getting my wireless signal from, the Access Point or the Router or both (assume I am in wireless mode).

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) on a Dell Inspiron 560. I am using a DI-524 D-Link wireless router. I have an Acer Aspire One Net Book running Windows XP Home it is equipped with an internal wireless network adapter. I can connect/communicate with router and access the internet with no problems whatever. However, when I connect an external wireless network adapter e.g. Alpha AWUS036H I cannot get a connection when I disable my internal network adapter. I have also tried the Trendnet TEW-424UB USB external wireless network adapter and the symptoms are exactly the same. If I leave home and use another Wireless point of access I have no trouble connecting using the external adapters which means the problem is confined to my personal home network. I have removed and reinstalled my router, and the network adapters drivers etc. I have uninstalled my Norton Firewall and and disabled my Windows firewall to no avail. I have removed my WEP security features and tried to run it open with no improvement. I have connected the external network adapters on a neighbours computer running XP to see if I could connect to my home network. That didn't work as well. Bottom line is I simply cannot get an external wireless network adapter to work with my router. Yet my internal netbook adapter connects with no problems at all.

I am trying to configure a Netgear WNR3500 router to be used as an access point. My AT&T U-Verse Gateway router is in the basement of my house and the WNR3500 is in my office on the second floor of my house. I am using the Netgear Knowledge Base article ID 19852 titled "Set Up a Wireless Router as an Access Point on a Network".In Step 5 is says in Advanced tab Setup > LAN "In the IP Address field, change the LAN IP address of the router (WNR3500) to 192.168.1.100 (same IP segment of the main (AT&T) router (192.168.1.1) and uncheck the DHCP server box.I did that and the wireless access point doesn't work. The AT&T Gateway wireless router IP address is 192.168.1.254. I also tried changing the WNR3500 LAN IP address to 192.168.1.200 and the access point still doesn't work.

I recently built a new desktop computer and installed it with Windows 7 since our old xp desktop had crashed. I am now trying to setup our wireless network similar to the way it was on the old xp desktop but cannot seem to figure out how to do it on windows. The basic setup would be: usb card (internet soure) ---> Desktop ---> ethernet cable to router wirless access for laptops etc. This was fairly easy on xp. All I had to do was enable ICS on the verizon card and then run the little network setup wizard on xp and boom the router was broadcasting internet. Now unfortunately windows 7 doesn't have that little wizard and I simply cannot figure out how to create the same setup. I enabled ICS on the verizon card but can't seem to get internet access to the router after that.

Just did a clean windows 7 x64 installation on a build a box computer with a new hard drive. Install went fine. Plugged it in to my 3 month old Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router (WRT54GL) and it doesn't recognize that there is any connection at all. Windows says "No connections are available" and troubleshooting can't identify the problem. The light on the router and on the computer comes on. I am running a wired connected XP computer and 2 Win 7 x32 wireless connected computers just fine. Ran ipconfig /all and it came up as follows:
Host Name.................... : Bottomdweller-PC
Primary DNS suffix.......... :
Node Type ....................: Hybrid
[Code]....
All wires are connected. I've tried booting in Safe mode with networking. I've even connected the computer directly to the cablevision modem. I've installed a USB Linksys wireless adapter and although it installs fine, it doesn't see the router at all. I've also tried reinstalling the router directly on this computer but it doesn't see the router at all.
I've tried setting up a new connection or network, Connecting to a network and choosing a homegroup and sharing option but since you need a network to connect to first I couldn't do it.
