Feb 11, 2012for those who got confused by the title of the thread (i couldn't) put it into better context from what it is) my situation is as follows.i have an old laptop which came pre installed with windows vista. i was considering making a vm of vista on my current laptop but as it was pre installed, i have no way of getting the installation files off so i can run it throught the vm and install it. is there any way to get around this (preferabaly legal)?

My internet has limitations and I cannot afford to download a 3 GB .iso or image file of windows 7 home basic. Incase my system gets corrupt or anything happens I would like to have a backup of my whole OS, so is their any way to extract the whole OS from my computer to just one ".iso" file? which later I can convert into a bootable USB flash drive of disc. I want to wipe everything so that only windows 7 is left and start from scratch as the issues I am having cant possibly be hardware based (I hope!!) The issues are varied. Can I write a boot cd from my current setup. Have googled it but see alot of topics that dont exactly match my situation. My ssd has partitions for system and hp recovery. Would it be simpler to restore somehow using that. Ideally I would like to create a windows 7 disk from my Oem erase everything and boot from cd.I know there will be a thread somewhere that fits this but I cant tell the ******** from the right way to go.

I tried repair option from the install disc but didn tried the in place upgrade but after selecting the Install now option I end up with a message that the system was booted from the install disc and I need to start Windows normally and then insert the install disc again which of course won't work when Windows can't boot.I made a new install on a test hard drive to check my motherboard and it is working fine. What can I do? I would like to boot on my regular drive with all my data and programs and not have to go through the long process of finding and installing everything anew.

This wasn't an issue/I didn't notice because I had another unused internal hdd which DID have an old bootable os partition, and then I'd just choose the correct instance of Windows when that one booted.I have to get rid of the old HDD with the bootable partition. Background:
I am sure this is something simple, but I can't get it working.
I had vista installed and I used partition magic to repartition my hard drive on my laptop.
I made the new partition come before my old partition, because I wanted windows 7 to be my primary eventually.
I think it may have someting to do with making the vista partition active, but I am notentirely sure how to do that.

Jul 18, 2011My installation was FAILED!!! i have windows xp 32 bit pre-installed (in C drive), I was trying to install DUAL BOOT xp with Windows 7 (in D drive NTFS) using ISO image file of Windows 7 64bit ultimate (present in my HHD), i mounted the ISO file of windows 7.The installation started normally but in the FINAL step (Finalizing installation) when system restarts to perform configuration etc, but instead of that i got message "Failed to install windows and rolling back changes".mportant NOTE: Using virtual dvd rom, i mounted and install Windows 7 "32 bit" all right!!! Dec 11, 2011I have a custom built system. windows 7 installed but it will not start up in this system. A friend put the hard drive into his system and Windows started up fine on his. I ran the memory check on windows and it never said that there were problems but you have to be able to get into windows to see the report so i can't be totally sure. The motherboard was sent back and checked by the mfg. and i doubt that the processor could be bad if it was able to install windows 7 onto the hard drive.

To try and repair, insert install disc, or use recovery mode, etc" With both HDs, I get asked the same question, "Windows 7 or an older OS," but when I choose Windows 7, it works. It's been... well, as good as you can expect windows to be up until yesterday. When I booted the laptop into Windows, I had no internet despite having an ethernet cable connected. I checked to make sure it wasn't just my router. Sure enough, wifi and ethernet work perfectly in Ubuntu. I went into windows again and checked if I had the latest drivers. I did, so I tried reinstalling them and everything worked fine. Until I restarted. Every single time I restart I need to reinstall my wifi and ethernet drivers. It takes seconds, but it's still annoying and shouldn't be happening.

Seagate ST31000340NS SATA Hard Drive Connected on SATA0
Operating Systems:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit on HDD
Windows 7 Ultimate 32Bit Booting from VHD
I Installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit onto Hard Drive as Per Normal Installation Onto the Hard Drive and Installation created 2 Partitions (1 System PArt and Another for C: Drive) Everything Works Great.m I Then Installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit Into a VHD. Setup Created a Multiple Boot Entry into the BCD so that when I Boot it Prompt Which OS I Want, I then Used BCDEdit to Change the Descriptions of the Boot Options "Windows 7 Ultimate - 64Bit - HOST" and "Windows 7 Ultimate - 32Bit - VHD" Everything still works Great.. No Problems.. Been Like this for a While Now and Perfect.
Now the Problem is that I Need to get some Data From and Old SATA Drive. I Shutdown .. Plugin the WD1600AAJS (160GB) into Another SATA Port (SATA1).. Turn Machine on and Press Delete to Enter Setup for Bios.. Goto Set Boot Device Priority and Ensure that the ST1000340NS Drive is at the Top (1st Priority).. Exit and Save Settings.. PC Goes through POST and Then Will not Boot.. it Gives "Missing Operating System" Shutdown Remove WD1600AAJS Drive.. Boots Perfect.. Reattach WD 1600AAJS Drive and "Missing Operating System" Tried Using "F12 to Select Boot Option" during POST to Select Boot Device.. Choose ST1000340NS ... and Still same Issue.. Remove the WD1600AAJS and Boots No Prob Off the ST1000340NS.
I thought that maybe it was the WD Drive.. so Tried another Seagate Drive.. and Same Issue..
I have set Every Available Option on The Bios to Choose the Boot Device and NOTHING Works.. I have Even swapped HArd drive SATA Ports .. still no Difference.
I have an Idea there is a problem with the BCD but I Cannot Edit or Add any thing to the BCD as it will not boot with the second drive attached. And When you edit the BCD it need the second drive attached to be able to Add a BCD Entry.
Windows 7 Won't Boot After Java Program Update Installed
Jul 24, 2010My installs of Windows 7 was working fine and all of a sudden it wont boot anymore. Yesterday I put in a required Java Program update install and I think Windows just added a couple of critical updates as well. I have tried booting in every way possible, rolling back, safe mode, etc, and nothing works.
I keep getting the screen telling me there is a problem and must do a system repair. Then the repairs and all it wants to do is shut down. I managed to pull up some error reports and it seems two files are corrupt which are TCPIP.SYS and one called FWPKCLNT.SYS.
TCPIP.SYS is located in C:/WIndows/System32/Drivers
FWPKCLNT.SYS seems to be in drive F:/ which is not an actual drive. It must be a temporary boot drive created by Windows 7.
I have an older XP on another partition on the same hard drive so I booted in XP to see if I could possibly delete the reported corrupt TCPIP.SYS file and replace it from another Windows 7 install from my laptop just to see if that might work. But it wont let me delete the TCPIP.SYS file. It says it is in use, but I can't understand that since I am trying to delete it from the Windows 7 partition while I am booted up from the XP boot partition.
Windows 7 Machine Slow To Boot, Won't Keep Fonts Installed
Nov 17, 2011A couple of months ago I was working on a logo design in Adobe Illustrator CS5 (I'm a graphic designer) when the power in my town cut out for a moment. It shut the computer down, and since then I noticed that it takes quite a long time for the machine to boot up... 5 or more minutes.
Also since then, every time I buy and install a new font it does not keep the font installed. I have to continuously reinstall them. Anything installed prior to that day is fine, but new fonts since then just won't stay put.
I'm using a Dell Studio XPS with Windows 7 Pro.
