Now, I've installed Win 7 (Professional) on the same as XP is installed. When I try to boot from HDD, I only get the XP entries, but can only boot Windows 7 through.
View 2 Repliesthis is what I did, since I have no CD-ROM, to install Windows 7 I created a partion X: NTFS and set it as the ACTIVE ONE, the put there the Windows 7 installation files, and opened prompt command to type bootsect.exe /n60 X: , next I restarted my computer, and automatically it booted into the Windows 7 setup, I installed Windows 7 on the partition C: and formatted the partition C:, everything installed and after the installation finished, a multiple choice menu appears that reads:[CODE]
View 6 Replies View RelatedSo long story short, my current os (w7) is installed on a non-boot partition of a now internal drive that used to be external. This wasn't an issue/I didn't notice because I had another unused internal hdd which DID have an old bootable os partition, and then I'd just choose the correct instance of Windows when that one booted.I have to get rid of the old HDD with the bootable partition. Is there anyway I can change the non bootable my currant OS is on to a bootable partition (ie thru windows, cmd, bios etc)
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem that seems more like a Win XP problem, but since its part of my migration to Windows 7 and many people these days may be trying the same.
As I said, I am in the progress of migrating to Windows 7. As a transient solution until I have transferred and re-installed everything under Windows 7 I want to have a dual boot capability, i.e. I bought me a larger HD, created two partitions on it, installed Windows 7 on the first partition, and then I used a disk-imager (Acronis Disk Director) to copy my entire old XP disk 1:1 to the second partition of the new HD. I then set things up so I can choose between the two partitions using the Windows 7 boot manager. After some fiddling the choosing and booting in principle works fine.
BUT, when I try to start WinXP, I have the very strange effect, that the system at first boots and starts WinXP up fine up to the point where it presents the login screen. When I then enter my name and password my credentials at first seem to be accepted, i.e. I get a "Loading your settings..." dialog but to my dismay only seconds later that dialog always turns into "Logging off..." (???!@#@$&!) at which point the system hangs for some long period. If I wait long enough (~5 minutes) it eventually returns to the login screen again. I also tried to login as Administator but that failed as well (the error message mumbled something about no domain server to verify my id which is complete nonsense, since my XP system was never part of any domain, so there is no server in the world that could verify anything here!).
Any idea what could cause this and why can't I not log into that copied/moved 1:1 Window XP installation? Any hints/suggestions/pointers would be highly welcome!
The only Problem I am having now is being able to format the partition with Vista still on it. For some reason I just can't get rid of it.

I am trying to load Windows 7 Pro the are 2 Partitions when i select any of the 2 i get the same massage that Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition 1 or 3 depending which i choose i then downloaded Drivers (SATA AHCI Driver) Into my USB the i got a massage No device drivers where found. then tried to format it goes up to 20% then fails.
it seems like i can't Excess my hard drive and the Total Size is the same as the Free Space Which means the is no operating system available

I currently have 32-bit Vista running.I initially created a new partition, copies all my data there, then started to do the custom install. I got the message: Quote: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks. Quote: Esc when booting to take you into the EFI boot manager and select DVD-Drive instead of ACPI (....) string I have tried to go in to the start-up options but I don't see this option. I just keep getting back to the above error message.I have since deleted my extra partition, and intend just re-syncing my laptop's data via Dropbox (9GB - hope it will be ok!).

This is the error message I get trying to install a Windows upgrade from 7 Home Premium to Pro. I have to do a custom install because I am installing English over Russian. I have looked on the internet about how to change my partition system to GPT. Seems like something I can do, however, I have a question: If I have only one physical hard drive in my machine, is it possible the change the partition system from MBR to GPT? I see lots of examples of doing it to a second hard drive, but not many when it is the only hard drive. It is a new drive and clean, so I do not worry at this point about the data on it.

The laptop doesn't have a DVD drive (no drive at all) so I've had to stick the installer on a USB stick from disc using a program.The USB boots up fine on the laptop, just like a disc. View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm a long-time reader but new poster. I am currently running Windows 7. I want to install Windows XP onto another disc and have a dual-boot setup. I keep Windows 7 up to date and secure, but for the XP partition, I would rather not have antivirus running or even installed, in order to limit background processes. I will not be logging into any place or making any credit card purchases when booted into Windows XP. It will just be used for surfing, games, etc. Further, if and when XP becomes compromised or buggy, I will simply overwrite the partition with a backup image.
If I use Bitlocker to lock down the Windows 7 partition (with the encryption key on a thumb drive) and boot into Windows XP, am I correct in thinking the XP installation see or can't access the Windows 7 partition? If XP gets compromised, can a virus access or write to the Windows 7 partition?
Is there any other reason why this would not be secure? Can a virus write to the BIOS?
I have Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit installed on DELL desktop (Optiplex 990) i7 Core. I have two HDD: Disk 0 contains the operating system 500GB. and Disk 1 empty 1TB.
I want to make a partition on disk 1 to mirror the operating system partition and keep the remaining for data storage. I tried to do but I had the following error message: "All disks holding extents for a given volume must have the same sector size, and the sector size must be valid."
I tried to attach a screen shot but couldn't.
I have been using PSE 7 for a few years. I just bought PSE 11. The PSE 11instruction sheet said it is OK to have two versions installed at the same time. I installed PSE 11.I restarted the computer and Windows 7 wouldn't open. I tried a couple of times and then opened Windows 7 in Safe Mode. I used System Restore to eliminate PSE 11 and, and after a Windows 7 opened normally (with PSE 7 still installed).I uninstalled PSE 7 and restarted Windows 7 normally. I installed PSE 11 and Windows 7 would not open. In Safe Mode I uninstalled PSE 11 and reinstalled PSE7 and Windows 7 is opening normally now.Did I just waste a lot of money upgrading to PSE 11?Adobe Forums have not been able to provide an answer to this problem.

I recently needed to allocate more disk space to it as i only had a gig left, i booted into MacOS and used Disk Utility to make the Mac partition smaller, i rebooted into windows and downloaded software called 'Partition Wizard' from www.partitionwizard.com. I dragged the Windows partition all the way so that it used up all the Unallocated Space, it required a reboot to finsih and when it did it displayed an error such as thistatus:0xc0000255Info: The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required informationI have the Installation Disk and i have tried repairing more than 3 times and it seemed to do nothing, so i tried using the CMD and bootrec.exe and now when i start the repair wizard it says there is no windows partition yet i can still try repairing things (Yet still does not repair anything). I downloaded EasyBCD but im on my Mac partition right now and its an exe, i have no clue how to run that within windows to try and repair the Bootloader. I do however have access to the BOOTCAMP partition through the mac side, and i can access all the files. Is there some way i can repair the bootloader through this?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm using a Thinkpad T420s, dual booting Windows 7 and Fedora 16. However, prior to me installing F16, I used Disk management to shrink the Windows partition. Well...it turns out I shrunk it *way* too small and I'm barely able to use it. Under Disk Management, even if I create unallocated space, it still will not let me re-size my windows partition. I think this is because the partitions are in the wrong order...but I don't know what to do about it.
Disk management shows four partitions as follows from left to right:

No matter what I do, I cannot click "Extend Volume" on my Windows 7 partition. I would experiment and use certain bootable partition tools, but I'm afraid I'm going to mess with GRUB and I won't be able to boot either one of my OS's..
I have a copy of windows 7 from a friend. (USB, possibly enterprise)It runs well, is official and can be re installed and is verified through the Microsoft site, so the media doesn't seem to be a problem.I was able to install Win7 Ult x64 on my WinVista HomePrem x86, but I went back through to clean the hard drive (it was full, I didn't format before) and after low level formatting I cannot reinstall the OS. The harddrives are completely empty, and I get stuck at "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition," after hitting next when you are selecting the HD partition to install on. I tried a couple of things already:
-Installing on another harddrive
-Formatting using Hiren's bootcd
-Using a hard drive with XP installed to see if it is an upgrade and not a full version (no luck, still wouldn't install)
-diskpart > list disk > select disk 0 > list partition > active \ in cmd..I have three hard drives attached to the computer right now, they can't all be broken. T.T

I wanted all my stuff from Ubuntu after win7 install so I created an NTFS partition and moved all my crap there, wipe Ubuntu and did a clean install. So after I moved all my stuff from the NTFS patition to the win7 partition I ran gparted and erased the extra drive. What I was paying attention to was that win7 installed into an extended partition. Now when I try to boot I get a 'Disk failure boot, insert system disk and press enter'. So I thought ok easy enough, no luck it can't run the repair from install disk as it can't see the drive for some reason. is there any hope for my drive? Or should I clean install? No biggie if I have too, I can run Ubuntu live and move my crap if need be, just would rather not.
