Windows 7 Cannot Be Installed, Selected Disk Has A MBR Partition
Nov 6, 2010
I'm trying to do a clean install on Windows 7 64-bit on my laptop. I currently have 32-bit Vista running.I initially created a new partition, copies all my data there, then started to do the custom install. I got the message: Quote: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks. Quote: Esc when booting to take you into the EFI boot manager and select DVD-Drive instead of ACPI (....) string I have tried to go in to the start-up options but I don't see this option. I just keep getting back to the above error message.I have since deleted my extra partition, and intend just re-syncing my laptop's data via Dropbox (9GB - hope it will be ok!).

l am having a problem with installing due to a disk partition problem.. Im getting an error that says "The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems Windows can only be installed to GPT disks".I have no clue and reading other forums it sounded like specific computers were having this problem but I built mine.Had a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 I used from a friend with no Key, Microsoft doesn't like that so I purchased a Key from them for Premium, used a W7 x32 disk by accident and I have 12 GBs of Ram so pretty inefficient.. I downloaded a W7 x64 version and am now having this problem...; First I've down this now bc Microsoft said they would send me a disk in the mail when I bought the Key but that was about 3 weeks ago and I would like to use my computer to its capabilities.

I know there are tons of threads on this but as of yet none of them have helped.Trying to do a clean install on a Sony VAIO laptop PCG-71312l (or something close to that)Where do you want to install windows?I have Disk 0 Partition 1 with a total size of 298.1 and free space of 298.0 GB Type is primaryError message below says "Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition 1. (show details)"The details are:"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS"Well that's the fun part of the SONY VAIO - you can't do squat in the BIOS except change the date/time and boot order but I read that the VAIO will detect and setup everything automatically. So I Can't do any ACHI/IDE changes.
So if I just click on next I just get an error message of"Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information."I have deleted, formatted, created new partitions and restarted the computer 10 times. Nothing is getting me anywhereOh and I had to create a bootable USB from the windows ISO to USB/DVD program.I have gotten this to work just fine before with the same hard drive which was working just fine an hour ago.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, For months I had any printer I set up working easily, and never had any problems printing. Last week I went to print a document from microsoft word, and it says "Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup". I thought that was pretty weird, so I went into Google Chrome, and tried printing a PDF online, it said "The printer selected is not available or not installed correctly. Check your printer or try to select another printer"I figured it was probably just a simple driver issue, but to make sure, I selected "Microsoft XPS Document writer" from the drop-down list, but to my surprise, it had the same error message, as did all of the options on that printer list.I uninstalled and reinstalled my printer driver anyways, and that did not fix my problem, even after trying to update the driver. Actually, it made it worse. My computer almost completely froze up and was running at 100% cpu power... I had to restart it. This happened a few times and I noticed that every time it did, in Task Manager in the processes there was a process called something like "USB setup" or something that effect (i don't want to freeze my computer to find out). I also noticed about half a million "splwow64.exe -Print driver host for 32 bit applications". (is this supposed to say "for 64 bit applications" if im running 64 bit windows? or is that literally for programs that are 32 bit programs?)I can't print anything at all, and have restarted many times. I think this is a deeper problem than drivers, I KNOW its not just my printer driver, nor my printer because it works with my girlfriends computer. Other usb devices work fine.

I wanted to create a new partition to try out linux. So I decided to shrink E: by 20 GB. I then formatted the free space into a new drive by right clicking and creating new simple volume. I was warned that the drive would be made "simple", but not knowing the implications, I went ahead with the procedure. Now on rebooting, windows won't load. I had made a repair disc, so was able to use it to check for any start up errors. It reported none. Moreover I used "diskpart" through cmd to find volume c: is dynamic.

So long story short, my current os (w7) is installed on a non-boot partition of a now internal drive that used to be external. This wasn't an issue/I didn't notice because I had another unused internal hdd which DID have an old bootable os partition, and then I'd just choose the correct instance of Windows when that one booted.I have to get rid of the old HDD with the bootable partition. Is there anyway I can change the non bootable my currant OS is on to a bootable partition (ie thru windows, cmd, bios etc)

As Windows tells me, "on EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks". This is the error message I get trying to install a Windows upgrade from 7 Home Premium to Pro. I have to do a custom install because I am installing English over Russian. I have looked on the internet about how to change my partition system to GPT. Seems like something I can do, however, I have a question: If I have only one physical hard drive in my machine, is it possible the change the partition system from MBR to GPT? I see lots of examples of doing it to a second hard drive, but not many when it is the only hard drive. It is a new drive and clean, so I do not worry at this point about the data on it.

I have a new 2TB WD SATA drive for my Dell Inspiron 545 to replace a failed 1TB drive. When I get to the part of the install where it asks "Where do you want to install Windows?" there is a message "Windows cannot be installed to this disk."I clicked "Show Details" and it says "'Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu." I read many threads here and on other sites. The drive is visible in the BIOS and set to IDE, not RAID. The processor is Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33 GHz. The drive is connected to the same cables as the previous drive. [code]

ASUS P8Z68 DELUXE/GEN3 Mobo
Corsair Force Series GT 180GB SSD
A WD Caviar Black 1TB that I already had
I'm booting off the Win7 install disc and I get to the "Where do you want to install Windows?" step. The SSD is all unallocated space and I deleted the existing partitions on the WD. So I see:
Quote :Disk 0 Unallocated Space 931.5 GB
Disk 1 Unallocated Space 167.7 GB

I tried to re-install my windows 7 today, and at first it seemed to be going well, but then it reset me back to the windows DVD install screen and when I try to install windows it gives me this message: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. "This computers hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disks controller is enabled in the computers BIOs menu." I think I need to change some BIOs settings on my motherboard or something but I am really just not sure, it's my first time build and this really is beyond me. If anyone has any experience on what to do or any advice I would be really grateful for it. The HD I am using is a Westinghouse 1T and the motherboard is a ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 AM3+.
