Windows 7 Machine Slow To Boot, Won't Keep Fonts Installed
Nov 17, 2011
A couple of months ago I was working on a logo design in Adobe Illustrator CS5 (I'm a graphic designer) when the power in my town cut out for a moment. It shut the computer down, and since then I noticed that it takes quite a long time for the machine to boot up... 5 or more minutes.
Also since then, every time I buy and install a new font it does not keep the font installed. I have to continuously reinstall them. Anything installed prior to that day is fine, but new fonts since then just won't stay put.
I'm using a Dell Studio XPS with Windows 7 Pro.

i've stumbled upon this weird bug when i was trying to install .otf fonts. fonts installing fine and applications can see/use them with no problem. i can see fonts in 'fonts' list, everything is fine until i reboot windows. when windows comes reboots neither apps nor fonts list is showing these fonts. when i'm trying to install them again, i'm getting a message that they are already exist and if i want to overwrite them. after reinstalling fonts, everything is fine again until another reboot. i tried deleting them and reinstalling, changing permissions, etc., nothings seems to be working.

I've installed an extra font that I need for an application (LiberationSansNarrow). This font is available in the application, in Notepad, and shows up in the Control Panel / Fonts utility. However, when I run a task automatically using Task Scheduler, the font is not available to the application (as is evident in the output files). It IS available if I run the same task manually, from a command window; the task is simply a script that calls some python code. The job run by Task Scheduler is run with the highest privileges box checked, and runs as a domain/active directory user (not a local user), but this is the same user who installed the font, and that user has full Administrator privileges. When I look at the font directory listing in a command window with dir /q, it shows the owner as "BUILTINAdministrators". Other fonts (installed with Win7 presumably) show up as either that, or "NT SERVICETrusted", including Arial, which works in the application under Scheduled Tasks. [code] Any clues on how to either change the owner of the font files of interest, and who that owner should be, or other possible solutions? Right-clicking on the font file does not give you normal options (such as properties, where you might change the owner).

Why would 5 of my windows 7 machines be running slow on our school network. I have updated drivers. We also have new laptops which are running windows 7 and access the network wirelessly. These are fine. The Main server is 2008 r2 while the data is stored on a 2003 server.

I upgraded to windows 7 ultimate a few weeks ago (clean install) and since then when I go to access files on my file server (running vista home premium) it takes forever to pull up thumbnails of photos I have stored or any other data for that on the drive. I never had this problem when my comp was running vista home premium as opposed to windows 7 I flashed the BIOS on my mobo to the latest version and I have all windows updates. Any ideas what I can do to speed things up when accessing this drive?

I unknowingly let my antivirus lapse for 1 week (i.e, no update happening). Had to uninstall and reinstall antivirus (Blink Professional with eeye digital security). During reinstallation, received message that said:
"KB981889 is not installed on this machine. PLease install this hotfix to resolve issues causing stuck network shares and RDP sessions as well as Windows kernel memory leaks."
I don't know what any of these things are, but I did check and found that kb981889 is not installed. Other things I read about hotfixes in general, though, said hotfixes are included in later updates and cautioned against using hotfixes. The PC does have all its updates. However, it has been running slow (which is why I discovered my out-of-date antivirus...I was checking things out) and not always finding in searches files that are in plain site. I've run utilities, defrag, scan disk. Things still aren't right.I have an ACER ASPIRE 7741-7870, i3-370m processor, 2.4 Ghz 3MB L3 cache, 4 GB DDR3 memory, running latest Windows 7, 64-bit

For the past week the System idle process has been hogging all my CPU. Have done the usual investigative routes, scans, safe mode scans etc. I have used my residential products: Malwarebytes, Superanti-spyware, Eset SS5 and have tried a couple of others being Hitman pro and Kaspersky on-line virus scanner. Since the problem started I have been trying to think of any odd installations but nothing springs to mind, to that end I have already put two different OS's on the machine and the problem still exists even in safe mode! I'm Running Win 7 x64.

I have a laptop that has been upgraded to Windows 7 from vista. In the beginning everything was fine and things worked really fast. However, for past few months I have had dreadful performance. Whenever I check my CPU is at 100% and it takes ages to do anything. Even opening a chrome tab takes 5 minutes. I tried doing driver checks to confirm nothing was wrong. After trying hard, I just re-installed Windows 7 but no luck. Then I formatted my hard disk and installed windows 7 again. Now it works fine but I do get the extreme slowness sometimes. While doing all of this, one thing I noticed that if I was to put my laptop to sleep and bring back it might start working absolutely fine. Before reformatting it worked 50% of times. Now again it has worked whenever I tried. I wonder if this is a CPU power setting issue? I have already set the power settings to have full performance

Is there any significance to the "amd" name on most of the files in Win7 install?Does Microsoft anticipate I might boot this disk on different CPU hardware? There sure are a lot of them ... and I'd like to remove the unnecessary ones to conserve space on an SSD drive, and avoid the voluminous Microsoft Updates every couple of days.

I formatted my old PIII and installed Windows 7 Pro. Here below my configuration:
AOPEN AX34, P3 1.0 GHz, 1,5GB RAM, WD 120 GB, Pioneer DVR-116D, Plextor PX-716A, HIS 9600 256Mb, Canon i865, Windows 7 PRO
Now, this PC is only meant to run 2 programs and some browsing. The programs are not a problem they are running well, browsing it is. Essentially, with IE 9.0 it does not move, it takes ages to load pages. With Chrome is much better but still unacceptable for ordinary browsing. Is there any tweak I can do to improve the browsing experience? Also, is there a way in the registry to change (temporarily) the RAM parameter and let an application I want to install to believe I have 2GB instead of 1.5GB? Otherwise, that application will not install as they require 2GB min. RAM.

I've just installed fresh Win 7 ultimate x64 via USB. Right from the start it was working really slow but it just got worse.
My hardware is decent: Intel i7 CPU, 12GB RAM, WD Caviar 500GB system HDD. Task Manager shows that only 13% of RAM is being used and 0% of CPU. Still, I can barely work on it - it keeps freezing everytime I click on more than one window...
Once I had to do a hard restart since it didn't want to shutdown normally, and then I got startup failure screen. Startup repair didn't do anything but it still managed to boot somehow.
I tried to optimize win process but that didn't do anything either.
I believe it might be the HDD, since I ran Win normally on other HDD with same hardware... But I did use current one as backup storage without a problem.

I have had this problem ever since the summer. I would tell you the speeds I'm getting from testmy.net, but the page is still loading. It's been over 30 minutes.Anyway, I have installed the drivers for the motherboard that came with the disc and such, and I still have no success. It is really annoying at this point, basically not being able to use my computer.

I have read many articles on how to make your computer boot quickly. I have tried several, but after a month or so they become very slow again. I have four laptops and three PCs in my home. While they are from different manufacturers, they are all no more then a year old and running Windows 7 Home Premium. With my Internet service I have Norton installed. My newest computer can take up to 2 full minutes, while one of the laptops can be as quick as 45-50 seconds. Specifically what is the magic formula or method of how I can get all my systems to boot up quickly and continue to do so in future?

I have a windows 7 pro 64 bit HP desktop computer that will not load windows. I have tried safemode, safemode w/ networking, and last know good config. I've run startup repair both from windowsRE and an original windows 7 pro disk. I have attempted multiple system restores (non destructive) to a number of different dates. The system restores say that they work but the machine still loops.
I know it's just some small windows corruption. I would have no trouble backing up my files with a linux distribution live flash drive and restoring the OS but I REALLY don't want to do that. How can I identify and repair the problem without starting from scratch. I'm familiar with msdos cli, but don't know which commands (if any) will help. I also don't know of any live CD's/ tools that will allow me to fix this problem. My problem here is simply lack of information.

I bought this Fujitsu laptop for less than a year. Its only for my school work. It takes forever to bootup, startup and it sometime hangs when I open up a program or typing. For the bootup, it takes very long time on the window logo, after that the black screen, followed by the welcome page with the loading cursor. Each of this process take a long time. For startup, its not so long but its still quite lag. For the opening up of program and typing, everytime I open up my visual studio, it will take a long time to show up and even if it showed up, it will be "not responding".So I will have to open it a second time before I can start using itWhen I am typing my codes, it will randomly hang and show that the program is not responding. I am still able to move my cursor though.

I have a friend who just picked up a brand new Toshiba laptop from Best Buy. It worked great the first two days, then suddenly slowed down to the point that it takes almost a half hour to boot. At first I thought it may be software issues so I wiped the entire computer and installed a new copy of Windows 7 from the recovery disk. This fixed nothing.Since then I have tried disabling the startup processes with msconfig Running GREP to see if he had a rootkit already.Running Avast, Malwarebytes, etc.Running Ultimate Boot CD to use their CPU, HD and Memory diagnostic tools. All of which have turned up no errors, no viruses no problems.what else could be causing such a massive delay?I plan on having him return this laptop and getting another one anyway, but Its not often I cant fix a PC I am given.

When I get to the splash screen it just blinks. It won't boot. I've tried going into the safe mode by pressing F8 at the previous screen. I've tried booting from a start disk. It won't go into the advanced boot options, and booting from a disk made no difference. This has happened before but I was able to get in through safe mode. Once I get in I can do a system restore and it will work for a while. How can I get in to my machine?

I have an Alienware M18X.The problems I'm having is when I start the laptop up I am prompt to run a recovery. Of course I do, but it brings up a "Loading Items" bar. I am not sure if this is normal, next screen that comes up is the blue wallpaper. At this point, all I see is the wallpaper, and the curser. Please make a note that there is nothing else on this screen and I let it sit on that screen for about 15 minutes. This happens with both Normally booting and the recovery option. I cannot seem to find the Safe Boot option anymore. I have both Unbuntu and Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit installed on this laptop.
