Have a netbook with Windows 7 Starter. It dualboots with Linux. My plan is to remove the Linux partition to make space on the hard disk. Obviously then the boot information, which is a GRUB, should be corrected. How can you edit this ahead of time, to allow a boot with a single entry? A netbook has no disk drive, so there is no repair disk available.
View 6 RepliesI was working on my computer when windows locked up and I was forced into a hard shut down, when I restarted the computer one of my hard drives showed up as invalid and my computer would not recognize it. When I tried to repair the sector to make it valid the it seemed to work, now my computer will not boot into windows at all. I have an SSD HDD set up and I need this computer as it is my main audio work station.

I don't know what to call these screen but some Startup Repair screen. Just says Repair action: Boot sector repair, Result: Failed.I downloaded and burned to CD the boot CD for the MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition but I don't know what disk I am even looking for. I see 3 partitions listed for one disk.The only one with a label is BDEDrive and it's 300 MB. The other two have *: as what I would call a label. One is 297.79 GB and the other is 12.34 MB. The BDEDrive is the only with with status of Active. NTFS on that partition and Other on the big partition.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen there is a Restart required after a software upgrade, the BIOS on my system (Win 7/64) will go to an external HDD (I have three for storage and backup). If I force it off and go into the BIOS on startup, it will show any of the other three HDD's in the boot priority. I reset the priority to the correct drive, save and start (repeat this process several times) and finally it will start from the correct HDD. I thought it might be the CMOS battery but with a new battery in place I still ran into this. This system (HP desktop) is less than a year old.

So far, I've bought a high performance HDD of the wrong size, trying to make sure that I replace it with an HDD with which my first cloning attempt will go without a hitch.
My laptop contains a 640GB Toshiba MK6465GSX HDD (Toshiba SDD - Product Detail). I am considering getting 640GB WD Scorpio Blue HDD for the cloning.
One of the constraints I want to observe is that I should be able to pick it up in person from one of the retailers in my city. However, they invariably carry the WD6400BPVT variant, which uses 4KB sectors ("Advance Format"). Nothing comes up in a search for "MKxx65GSX MKxx76GSX advanced-format" (without quotes), so I assume it has 512 byte sectors.
Is there a problem with cloning from a 512 bytes/sector HDD to an 4KB/sector HDD?
On the Neo Smart website, there is a link to create a emergency boot/repair disc. It's a torrent download (165MB for Win 7 64 bit), they also have the 32 bit as well as Vista 32 & 64 bit discs. It was the first time I have ever done a torrent file, so I done it on my XP laptop. And it is legal, it was said that Microsoft provided these discs. The best that I could do was manually type it in, I don't know how to copy & paste or whatever it's called. I had to figure out how to do the torrent thing myself, I'm sure there are many of you who are more experienced. I did create a disc as soon as I got this PC going, but it's better to have another just in case. And I felt it would be good to share this with you all, because I've received a lot of pointers here, and if anyone gets in a jam, I hope that it's useful.
I've got a CyberPower desktop computer which has worked great for over a year now. I was having some problems with my hard drive and so I started to attempt to improve it by first doing a disk check and then disabling some programs launching when the computer starts, making sure not to touch the Microsoft ones. Now when I start my computer I'm greeted with a message from the windows boot manager saying "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause" the status is "0xc000000f and the info is "The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible". The major problem that I'm having is that when I put in the CyberPower disc which contains Windows 7, it seems to just ignore it! What can I do?

View 4 Replies View RelatedThis maching was turned off and unplugged while owner went on vacation.On return it just goes to the auto repair parocess every power up.Went to DOS prompt and the drive with windows on it was given the letter D, the system partition was given C.I tried bootrec /rebuildbcd and /fixboot to no avail. Then I assigned the windows partition to C and the system partition to D and tried again to no avail.I have removed this drive and scanned it on another PC as a secondary drive and found nothing other than cookies with Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware as well as nortons. I also looked for rootkit with TDSSkiller. After renaming cbs.log I looked in D;windowslogscbs after doing a sfc /scannow process for the repair log and there was none created. I looked on the system boot drive "C" but of course there was no windows folder so I created a windows/logs/cbs folder to see it it might be created there, it wasn't.This appears to not be due to a bug but maybe a shutdown while it was in hibernation or something like that.

Unfortunately I didn't have the foresight to remove the old HDD first, and the W7 install kept the boot sector on the old HDD. Now of course when I remove the old HDD the system won't boot. I tried doing a repair with the W7 install disc. It does say it's repairing, but after many restarts there is still no boot sector on the SSD.So now I re-installed the old drive, but I eventually want to remove it. One additional thing that might help the diagnosis: On bootup I am presented with two W7 boot options. If I select the second W7 it comes back with "Windows failed to start" and then goes on to instruct me to reboot with the W7 disk and select "repair". But as I stated, I already tried that and it didn't work.I spent many hours setting up my W7 environment on the new drive, and I'd really like to fix this problem without doing a fresh re-install of W7.

View 2 Replies View RelatedYesterday, I was browsing on my computer and heard a weird clicking noise when the CD drive was running. About a few minutes after that, Firefox froze so I did a hard reboot, and up comes this message:
"No boot sector on internal hard drive No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics."
I have no idea what it means, and I've been everywhere trying to do System Restore using the Windows 7 reinstallation disk, but unfortunately I couldn't create a restore point because my jump drive doesn't have enough space and Startup Repair couldn't solve my problem. I've even tried the bootrec.exe on Command Prompt but I had no idea what to do. This is the first time that this has happened to me. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1545 and I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
I'm on a tight limb about this problem right now because my warranty expired in early June this year, and I don't have the money for them to look at it, let alone buy a brand-new hard drive.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIt's a dell latitude, 1 year old. Laptop suddenly crashed and when the laptop booted it said: "no boot sector on internal hard drive". I tried repairing the boot sector with the windows repair function, but the hard drive is just empty... nothing to repair. Then I tried to boot off a ubuntu live cd. which worked. and showed me an empty hard drive with the_maximum_capacity_of_the_drive_GB of unallocated space.
Since that I reinstalled windows 7 two times, and stopped working after an hour or so. I installed ubuntu, which worked for several days. then i tried windows 7 again (clean install). And then I kept working on the laptop for a couple of hours until the "crash" happened. All the programs stopped working suddenly. When I opened anything I was shown this error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion."
After that everything is lost if I turn the computer off. And I'm back at an empty unformatted hard drive. I changed the sata operation mode in the bios to different options before every installation of windows. I didn't try xp, because I don't have dell-xp cd's . Is the hard drive broken? After I got my new laptop, I installed antivirus, windows updates, etc, removed bloatware and installed the software that I actually use. Then I created my System Repair disk (single disk). Does this disk include all software and windows updates that were on my computer at the time I created the disk? I have read that System Repair disks will only have the factory settings of Windows 7, but I don't know if this is the case for all System Repair disks or only those that came with the computer and were made before the computer was purchased?I've also read that a System Repair disk could include a system image. Is this true and done by default when the System Repair disk is created?

So I installed Linux, hoping to fix the booting problem. I successfully got Linux on the partition which originally failed, but now I get this boot screen option,Is there some way to correct my computers boot to either have the original boot where I can select either partition to boot from with EasyBCD or just deactivate Linux as long as the computer boots directly to my Windows 7 and I don't get the original error.

Q: Why am I doing this?
A: I have both retail versions of Windows 7 x32 and x64 and need to install both on one HDD, I have two unique keys also. This is used for my work machine for software testing.
I have a single SATA 250GB HDD which is a new HDD, completely un-used.
The steps I think are correct are as follows;
* Insert Windows 7 x32 into drive and proceed with setup.
* Click advanced drive options and click New, create the first partition 50% of my full HDD space.
* Click New and create the 2nd partition with the same size as previous.
* Install Windows onto Partition 1 as normal.
* Insert Windows 7 x64 into drive and proceed with setup.
* Install Windows 7 onto Partition 2 as normal.
Use the unique license key for each install, cannot use the same key for both.
Both operating systems are now installed and can be chosen on boot, each has the same available size.
One question I am wondering is does this process create 2 System Partitions for recovery files like it does when doing a single install? If so do I need to incorporate the 200MB size allocated when I am choosing each partition size?
I know this can also be done via disk management after one is installed then shrinking the volume by a max of 50% but I want to know the clean install route as mentioned above.
Windows 7 on Novell Network. On boot up the Novell Logon screen comes up first and Username is correct and then Password is entered. The next screen is the Windows 7 Logon. The username is incorrect and no password is used. The correct username must be typed in.How do I get the correct username in the Windows 7 Logon on boot up of machine? Just goes to black screen w/blinking cursor then goes to 'startup repair' (which I'm postiive this is a virus of somekind) & will not allow me to do anything. Just repeats itself. I downloaded Windows 7 repair to a CD-R, chgd BIOS settings to CD/DVD to boot first, saved changes, and will NOT pull/boot up from disc. I've tried 2diff repair discs, both do not work. 'F8' does not do anything for me, not able to get to 'safe mode'. Computer is only 2yrs old.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell notebook wiht Windows 7 64-bit that is getting a BSOD (0xF4) and I'm fairly certain is was caused by a rootkit, although I'm not 100% certain. One debugger shows wininit.exe as the culprit and another shows the kernel itself. At any rate, the system will not boot. It gets to where the login dialog is about to show and gets the BSOD. It will not boot in safemode either.Anyway, I've tested the hard drive and memory and I'm fairly certain that it is corrupted and/or rootkit files that is the problem. So I've booted to a Windows 7 repair disk and ran SFC and it tells me that files are corrupted and it can't fix them.Normally I would check the CBS.log file to see what's up, but I'm not sure where the log file is when running SFC from the repair disk. I've searched the "X" drive and the "C" drive, but there's no log files.

Laptops don't recognise it until drivers are loaded.Hp pavilion dv6500 won't boot. Mbr is damaged. Can't use repair disk as won't recognize Usb drive.So I put hdd into my other laptops 2nd hdd port " Hp pavilion Dv9800 and repaired boot sector that way. Tested it on dv9800 and boots fine.Put hdd back into dv6500 and get same mbr fail message.

I'm a bit afraid to use the Win 7 repair disk 32 bit I created; I might mess things up further. I've tried to download a 32 bit installer update to no avail; it says it's not compatible with my version of Windows (Professional, SP1). Anyhow, does the Win 7 repair disk have a fix for the lost Win 7 installer? If so, I might give it a try if you can provide some guidance in doing so. I have everything backed up in Carbonite, Seagate external drive, Acronis True Image, memory sticks, etc.
