Have an issue with unmountable boot in windows 7. Do not have a repair disk or original disks since son purchase it from a friendI used an XP disk to get in cmd and did a chkdsk /r fixing bad sectors. Can i use the fixboot or bootrec.exe commands to fix the windows 7 boot issue?
View 2 RepliesI was working on my computer when windows locked up and I was forced into a hard shut down, when I restarted the computer one of my hard drives showed up as invalid and my computer would not recognize it. When I tried to repair the sector to make it valid the it seemed to work, now my computer will not boot into windows at all. I have an SSD HDD set up and I need this computer as it is my main audio work station.

So far, I've bought a high performance HDD of the wrong size, trying to make sure that I replace it with an HDD with which my first cloning attempt will go without a hitch.
My laptop contains a 640GB Toshiba MK6465GSX HDD (Toshiba SDD - Product Detail). I am considering getting 640GB WD Scorpio Blue HDD for the cloning.
One of the constraints I want to observe is that I should be able to pick it up in person from one of the retailers in my city. However, they invariably carry the WD6400BPVT variant, which uses 4KB sectors ("Advance Format"). Nothing comes up in a search for "MKxx65GSX MKxx76GSX advanced-format" (without quotes), so I assume it has 512 byte sectors.
Is there a problem with cloning from a 512 bytes/sector HDD to an 4KB/sector HDD?
I have installed Windows 7 from my hard drive (E:). Now I have a small problem, the boot sector (or something like that) is located in E:, I want to move it to C:. Moreover there is two options in the bootscreen: Windows 7 and install Windows 7 RC. How I will remove the secon option?
View 4 Replies View RelatedRunning home premium on HP desktop.I installed an SSD and installed W7 on it. Unfortunately I didn't have the foresight to remove the old HDD first, and the W7 install kept the boot sector on the old HDD. Now of course when I remove the old HDD the system won't boot. I tried doing a repair with the W7 install disc. It does say it's repairing, but after many restarts there is still no boot sector on the SSD.So now I re-installed the old drive, but I eventually want to remove it. One additional thing that might help the diagnosis: On bootup I am presented with two W7 boot options. If I select the second W7 it comes back with "Windows failed to start" and then goes on to instruct me to reboot with the W7 disk and select "repair". But as I stated, I already tried that and it didn't work.I spent many hours setting up my W7 environment on the new drive, and I'd really like to fix this problem without doing a fresh re-install of W7.

Obviously then the boot information, which is a GRUB, should be corrected. How can you edit this ahead of time, to allow a boot with a single entry? A netbook has no disk drive, so there is no repair disk available.
View 6 Replies View RelatedYesterday, I was browsing on my computer and heard a weird clicking noise when the CD drive was running. About a few minutes after that, Firefox froze so I did a hard reboot, and up comes this message:
"No boot sector on internal hard drive No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics."
I have no idea what it means, and I've been everywhere trying to do System Restore using the Windows 7 reinstallation disk, but unfortunately I couldn't create a restore point because my jump drive doesn't have enough space and Startup Repair couldn't solve my problem. I've even tried the bootrec.exe on Command Prompt but I had no idea what to do. This is the first time that this has happened to me. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1545 and I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
I'm on a tight limb about this problem right now because my warranty expired in early June this year, and I don't have the money for them to look at it, let alone buy a brand-new hard drive.
My wife shout down her computer this morning took it on remote location for work today but never booted it up. When she got back home tonight it wouldn't boot up. I don't know what to call these screen but some Startup Repair screen. Just says Repair action: Boot sector repair, Result: Failed.I downloaded and burned to CD the boot CD for the MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition but I don't know what disk I am even looking for. I see 3 partitions listed for one disk.The only one with a label is BDEDrive and it's 300 MB. The other two have *: as what I would call a label. One is 297.79 GB and the other is 12.34 MB. The BDEDrive is the only with with status of Active. NTFS on that partition and Other on the big partition.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIt's a dell latitude, 1 year old. Laptop suddenly crashed and when the laptop booted it said: "no boot sector on internal hard drive". I tried repairing the boot sector with the windows repair function, but the hard drive is just empty... nothing to repair. Then I tried to boot off a ubuntu live cd. which worked. and showed me an empty hard drive with the_maximum_capacity_of_the_drive_GB of unallocated space.
Since that I reinstalled windows 7 two times, and stopped working after an hour or so. I installed ubuntu, which worked for several days. then i tried windows 7 again (clean install). And then I kept working on the laptop for a couple of hours until the "crash" happened. All the programs stopped working suddenly. When I opened anything I was shown this error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion."
After that everything is lost if I turn the computer off. And I'm back at an empty unformatted hard drive. I changed the sata operation mode in the bios to different options before every installation of windows. I didn't try xp, because I don't have dell-xp cd's . Is the hard drive broken? I guess not because ubuntu works. and windows 7 also, but it just goes away suddenly... Here's a video (shot in portraitmode) of the event... [URL].
My laptop is currently dual booting Ubuntu 11.04 and windows 7. Recently windows has been taking forever to boot up (at least 2 - 4 minutes), it runs perfectly fine when booted. I stuck in the CD to see if there was any start up errors but I cannot seem to access that due to the grub menu. Is there anyway to fix this issue?
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I finally got around to checking one of my set ups and I discovered that it does not have the Windows 7 100MB section on the SSD. I double checked with Macrium and sure enough, there is no 100MB section on the SSD.
Is there a way to install it without having to reload the entire O/S again?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought this computer three months ago, and had no problems, up until now. It all started with it freezing up all of a sudden, forcing me to restart. But the display didn't show up. Tried again. Didn't work. Eventually, I removed my GPU and placed it back again, thinking it was loose. Then it finally worked.
Then it happened again. So after taking out my graphics card twice, it finally started working, but my HDD started making strange sounds. A sound I've never heard before, and only occurred during start up. I shrugged it off.
Now I start getting these sort of instances, when what ever program I have open, stops responding and Windows get's pretty laggy. The Windows Explorer (Not IE, the tool bar thing) also is unresponsive. I know it can't be a virus, Trend Micro showed no signs of anything after I scanned my computer a bunch of times.
So I did what any sane person would do, I did a bit of research on the net, and found this thread on this forums. The person here had a similar problem that I did. After reading most of the comments, I downloaded HDD SMART, as instructed, and apparently "Current Pending Sector Count" is yellow.
My laptop has Windows 7 installed.My Toshiba Satellite L650 started slowing down and freezing every hour or so while for a few weeks which progressively got more often. I thought it was the new modem/router the cable company installed and maybe got a bad virus. I purchased Norton 2012 and after talking w/Toshiba support did a system restore by holding down the "0" button. This seemed to work but not for long, a week later the same issues were occurring. I did another system restore and it worked for a couple of days. Chkdsk did find bad clusters. Now start up repair keeps trying to fix it when I turn it on but it can't.I have ordered a new hard drive from Tiger Direct a few days ago, it is on back order, not sure when I'll get it.I'm afraid to use the start up repair disk that I made on the new hard drive when it does come.My questions are: is there any other way I should be going about fixing this 14 month old laptop?Also, I don't have the original software disks, they didn't come with the computer so I either have to order a copy from Toshiba or should I use that repair disk? Can software cause an issue like this?

I have several recent dump files that have been analyzed via the windbg tool I saw referenced in a different thread. I get bluescreens usually about once a day, sometimes twice a day. It doesn't really matter what I'm doing. I can be surfing the net talking on ventrilo.
I can be poking around checking out Windows 7 features. I can be playing an online game. I can even be asleep and when I wake up, it's there. I assume it's some kind of driver related issue but when looking over the dump files, I'm really not sure what I should be looking for. Hopefully there is someone out there that can share their wealth of knowledge.
I run a Core2Duo E6600, 4 gigs of Patriot DDR2, an Asus P5N32-E SLI Motherboard, an EVGA 8800GTS 640mb video card, and 3 Seagate drives.
I initially thought the problem could be sound related. So I installed the latest Vista drivers for my onboard sound device courtesy of the Asus website. A friend had suggested that the Windows 7 Nvidia display drivers could be the culprit. So I am currently running 64bit Vista Nvidia drivers. However my system has crashed after each attempt at fixing it. I ran a memory diagnostic through Windows. I walked away while it was doing it and when I came back it had booted into Windows and nothing was stated one way or the other.
For the record it seemed fine during the first pass so I walked away thinking it would report something when it was done. For the most part I've just rebooted and kinda chalked it up to it being RC and maybe I needed to wait for Windows 7 specific drivers in order to address whatever issue I was having. But as time went on, I've come to the conclusion that I should try to address this issue as it may not be something that simply goes away come final release.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI got locked out and followed the directions to enable to default administrator,,When I went to change passwords I did not change the magnify.exe back to the cmd.exe. Now I can't I have to be a trusted installer. There are also three of them. One is in the x86 folder, one int he Sys/WOW64, and another in amd64_microsoft-widows-magnify, this one and the first I mentioned have the same log group of numbers and lettrs following it.
It's making things even more difficult to do cause I can't open a comand prompt at all without rebooting. Is there anyone out there who can tell me how to identify which is the correct magnify.exe to change back to cmd.exe. I do have one that is oldmagnify.ext. Should it be that one.
And then one more problem. Now I am not the adminstrator so I need a "trusted installer" to make the change. My default administrator can't do it either because I created a profile for my network to use the same one on my Vista to share files in case I'm ever locked out again. I think by doing that the system automatically took full level admin rights away from my default admin!
I deleted my recovery partition before realising it was the recovery partition. That 11.26GB unallocated was the recovery partition.I was installing Ubuntu as a dual boot, and wanted to install it on its own partition. But I already had 4 primary partitions (the 1.46GB bootable recovery partition, C:, E: and the 11.26GB partition with the recovery files). So i shrunk C:,deleted the 11.26GB partiton and created the new primary partition. I later discovered it had the recovery files.Ubuntu installation needed some other partitions and it must've converted E: to a logical drive.I have installed the MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition v7.5 The results of a full quick scan: Double clicking the HHDRECOVERY partition (unallocated space) shows the recovery files: However, doing a full scan of the unallocated space also shows a small partition labeled "Boot": Double clicking that drive shows the following:However, that folder does not appear to contain any files. There was a [+] to the left of the folder, but clicking it just made it disappear since there was nothing to show. I'm not sure if I can just ignore this tiny section or not.
I am just wondering if anyone has any recommendations on how I should proceed. I have not ever attempted partition recovery or used this program before and feel like I only have one shot at this and don't want to screw it up, if it is even possible.Also, yes I did create recovery discs, I think I've done it twice, but I'm not sure where they are. I've had a good search but haven't found them. Although I've other places yet to search but so far not the opportunity. View 2 Replies View RelatedHDD: ST30005 28AS. Failing. I have to recover some data and throw it away. With Seatools dos cd, I accidentally the first sector. I also set it at that time at 33 gb. Now I can't see any partitions in it. I tried everything in HIREN's boot cd. The drive was failing, 15 minutes at windows loading, SMART messages to backup it, etc. I low level formatted it when it was 33 GB. My data is a few GB beyond anyway. However I played with it I can't read anything from it. Help.OK, so the drive is my third, a storage drive. I disconnected the other drives, inserted the Windows 7 recovery disk, but it didn't do anything. I couldn't find the ol' cmd menu I knew from other times. (Info or help -> a series of commands, including fixmbr.) It found the drive, but couldn't say anything about it. So no access, no identity, no status of it, nothing. Windows keeps telling me to replace the drive, but sees no volume informations. How the hell can a drive become invisible at any kind of content mode? I just used the menu from seatools and it vanished. How can it offer a delete for first sector but no fresh write of it?

If I run Repair from my installation disk and in System Recovery Options, it says that it has detected problems and asks if I want to repair it. I think that this is because Startup Repair is trying to fix the thumbdrive that I keep my Windows 7 install files in. I am overseas now and as my computer does not have an internal optical disk drive and my external drive is back home, thus using my thumbdrive is the only way to access the repair console.
I tried running a few commands, namely:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd
Fixmbr and fixboot work, but when I run RebuildBCD, it detects C:Windows as having a Windows installation, but if I type Y(yes) or A(all), it says that the requested system device cannot be found.
My Windows 7 has stopped booting after a restart, the system would just endlessly play the boot animation and not boot properly... system restore won't work, startup repair won't work, chdsk and sfc won't work. I have yet to try and see whether a Registry fix works. Windows loads the WRE VERY slowly.
