Having Poor Performance On ExFAT Formatted External USB HardDisk
Sep 18, 2012
Recently I have formatted my Usb External Harddisk with exFAT, as I heard of the benefits of it over FAT32. Its an IMATION Drive with 320gb storage. Device Properties: TOSHIBA MK3252GSX USB Device, The problem is that it takes forever to copy files from the drive as compared to when the format was FAT32. Currently, Im trying to backup all my files on my PC and I've been trying to copy out 60gb of Data that I started 10+ hours ago. The wierd thing is the progress bar moves a fraction and then stops for about 5mins before continuing the another fraction.
After having rather high hopes for SSD Performance...I'm disappointed.I'm glad I got a test unit, because if I would've shelled out the cabbage for this, I'd be a little PO'd.I have an 8300 Quad Core 2.5 Intel with 4GB of RAM running Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit.Instead of trying to clone the old drive, I did what I thought was right and did a fresh install.I loaded up MSE, Office 2010 and all Windows Updates.Did a couple of tweaks (made sure defrag was off, DMA mode on instead of PIO, disabled indexing)I have all the latest chipset, mobo, video, etc., drivers.Yes, it boots into Windows to the desktop faster. No doubt.Yes, it opens up windows faster and programs SOMETIMES as well. But it multitasks terrible. If I'm download, installing, etc., anything...and try to move program to program, it's slow. To the point I think it's freezing up.I've read a few of the tweaks here...and I'm missing something I think. It's an Imation 2.5" M series 64GB drive. I know it's not the Vertex 2...but it has pretty decent specs behind it. Not the best, but it should do everything my SATA platter drive does better...period.It doesn't.What should I be looking for? (It shipped with the latest firmware, and trim is turned on...not like that matters since I only installed Win7Pro fresh a few hours ago...)
My 1TB external hard drive worked just fine. I used to store there everything. It was using NTFS file system. Last week I connected it to my laptop and it was really slow when I tried to move or delete files from my pc to the drive. I disconnected and reconnected it to my laptop. Suddenly, it said that I had to format it! I couldn't even access it neither the files in it. I managed to take some of the files to my laptop using recovery software and they are now safe. I thought the trouble would be gone now. I thought now I would just format it and store my files again. I was wrong. I can't even format it!
I tried disk management, cmd, almost everything. I downloaded various programs to run tests and try to write everything zeros. Turned out quitting that cause it tells me it needs a lot of hours. So, I tried a different approach that I was so stupid not to have tried yet. I tried formatting in other file system. I tried and it worked, well, almost... I can only successfully format it to exFat with the 'quick format' option enabled. If that option isn't enabled or I try to format it to NTFS, the formatting process takes forever or crashes. I would stay with my HDD formatted to exFat, but it is too slow..
I have Windows 7 (x64) build 7264 installed and encrypted on a 32GB SSD.
(I also have a 1TB drive for storage.)
I installed it about a week ago and lately it has been becoming sluggish and unresponsive at times. Mostly when loading webpages with lots of pictures or videos. I've tried 3 different browsers with the same result. When watching streaming video, it freezes randomly for a few seconds at a time when playing (but the video play bar shows that it's loaded way past the point where it freezes). I don't think it's my internet connection, because it's pretty fast (university) and I don't have these problems in ubuntu. Also, iTunes sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to gain window focus when I click on it.
I'm having trouble pinpointing where the problem lies. It's obviously not the memory. The processor does't seem to be under a heavy load (and it has 4 cores). Could it be the SSD somehow? It is one of the cheaper ones. My ubuntu installation is on the regular hd and works fine.
I have a Microsoft Wireless Mouse 4000 that I frequently carry around. I would like to try using it to play games, but it has serious issues. Outside of a game, the mouse works perfectly fine. In game, the mouse jerks around and stutters, making it utterly impossible to use. It does not occur with any wired USB mouses.
I recently upgraded to an SSD. I moved windows 7 over to the new SSD and re-aligned the partition properly The drive setup is as follows:
2x 500GB WD Black drives in RAID 0 1x 120GB ADATA S510 SSD
In BIOS, RAID mode is enabled. You cannot enable RAID for one pair of drives and AHCI separately. I was assuming disks that are not part of the logical RAID volumes would be set to AHCI automatically. I have enabled NCQ in AMD RaidExpert for the SSD.WEI is 5.9 for the primary disk. The primary disk is the SSD.Other strange behanivour is that the RAID array and the SSD both appear as SCSI devices in device manager, and Windows won't accept the ahci drivers from ECS.
i am using external western digital hard disk, i am unable see it on my desktop. but it's showing in disk management. please assist on the below issue a lot of important data in that harddisk.
I tried to make password on my external hard disk with bit locker then it is lock I can'topen anymore when I right click unlock harddrive is coming but could not function.
using windows 7 64 bit sp1, using old hd from last pc as external drive, using it for backup, today when I switched it on I get a message telling me it needs to be formatted, why this has suddenly happened, formatting no problem as I still have files on pc, just like to know why this message has suddenly popped up, drive is SATA if it helps,
I was working with two drives and mixed them up on a format. What is on the drive isn't essential, but it would be nice to see what was lost, so I can go from there. Can anyone recommend a way to get it back? It just happened and I haven't put anything else on the drive since it happened. Hit Quick Format, and stopped the formatting about 10 seconds into it, sucks
I have an external drive that does backups of files for me on a weekly basis through windows, needless to say the backup was getting bigger so I decided to go for a better data storage solution and formatted the external into NTFS. While doing this I also decided to format a USB key into NTFS.THE external drive format took hours, four or so hooked up via firewire. I blamed the issue on the drive and ignored it for the next couple of weeks. The backups didn't work properly they stopped halfway according to Windows even if I let them run 12+ HOURS. Before I formatted it took only 2-3 hours for the backup. I blamed the entire issue on the drive, maybe time to replace it, but I didn't have time to mess with it cause it was simply annoying me.Didn't use the key until tonight. Remember it is formatted as NTFS also. I started to copy a movie file to it, 700mb, it stopped at nearly 89% with 5 seconds left and did not move one bit. I hit cancel and it stayed on the cancel screen for 10 minutes with no resolve. At this point I tried to open a firefox window and it was not responding.......so what did I do I pulled the key and just like that Firefox window popped up and all was well. At that point it hit me, but the external storage solutions are NTFS, could it be my Mobo? Surely not!, Oh Microsoft you make me sad again....Just like with Vista. I reformatted the USB key back to FAT32, transferred a larger 1.4gig file in about 2-3 minutes and had no hangup issues. I can't blame the issue on the mobo especially since it relates to both USB 2.0 connection and the FireWire has the same issue. I guess windows 7 64bit doesn't like external NTFS connections. My windows appears up to date!
I have a 1tb external hard disk which was working fine till yesterday. It fell down last week. After that, I transferred two files (total of 25gb) from my laptop into the external hard disk yesterday. The problem started after that. When, I tried to open any of all the files (a total of 11 including the two I transferred yesterday), it's suggesting to be formatted. The external hard drive is recognized in the disk manager to be healthy. Currently, I have turned the Easeus Recovery software on, it's showing 12 hours to be completed.
I have a 1.5TB Seagate ext HD that is formatted as MS-DOS (FAT), this was formatted on my iMac. The Mac internal HD has completely crashed. I attached the ext HD to my Toshiba Satellite laptop, the ext HD does not show in the drive list. It does show in the device manager. It also shows as working properly in the properties menu I need files from this drive. How do I get my Windows 7 system to read the ext usb drive?
as the topic states, my main desktop and my netbook cannot recognize having two identical external hdd's at the same time.It will recognize each seperate, but not both at the same time. The reason i need this is that i am backing up all my WII iso's
both hard drives are WD mypassport 500gb external portables (both powered by USB), and each are partitioned. on one partition its formated ntfs, the other WBFS and both are the exact same like that.
i guess im wondering if its because i named the second hdd drive x and drive z?
i got a warning when formating the second one something like (windows doesnt like when you name the hdd letters like x and z) what i dont get is that both drives can be recognized when plugged in seperately...
By mistake my external hard disk formatted by clean and clean. How to recover my all file Inside now when I connect the pc its detecting hard disk but not showing its connected.
I have an external hard drive that was formatted in NTFS on an XP machine not too long ago. It is a 160 GB Western Digital. It has been working great on windows 7 for a couple of weeks. Just today it won't let me access the drive and it is telling me that I will need to format the drive before I can use it. I have so much important data on here. I am really worried about losing it all. Why is this happening?
The past few months, something strange is going on with my external USB 2.0 1TB hard drive which I use for weekly backup. Various activities cause the drive to wake up, which slows Windows 7 (Ultimate 64-bit) down for a few seconds until the drive is fully spun up. Actions include emptying the recycle bin, downloading files in Firefox, and occasionally clicking links in Chrome. I've even turned off recycle bin for that drive, but no difference. There are no references to that drive in the Windows environmental variables or browser configuration. With system/hidden files visible, I see no files on the drive which indicate a temp cache or virtual memory file. C: is the only drive being used for virtual memory. I've got 8GB of system memory and 1GB of video memory, plus plenty of hard drive space. I've been supporting/using Windows for many years, but this has me baffled.
all of a sudden my external HDD (USB) is no longer performance optimized.usually the properties window of the device has a tab "policies" where you can choose between "quick removal" and "better performance".after recent system changes (BIOS update, windows updates, formatting the external HDD) i observed very poor performance.i then noticed the following: 1) the device no longer shows up in systray / notification area for safe removal 2) the properties dialog no longer has the policies tab!so it looks like the operating system has permanently activated the "quick removal" (write caching disabled) now and won't allow me to change it to "better performance" (write caching enabled, systray icon for safe removal).but why?and how to change it back?some additional notes notes:a) windows 7 is still showing proper behaviour for other removalbe devices (e.g. USB thumbs driver). it seems to be specific to my external HDD.b) the external HDD is formatted with NTFS.c) this is a dual boot system (Windows 7 x64, win xp x86). my external HDD doesn't show those symptoms when booting into windows xp. so i can rule out the bios update as root cause. it seems to be specific to Windows 7.
I am thinking of installing Win 7 RC at some point today but I have an exteral drive (500gb) formatted to exfat which is full of well everything, and was wondering if this would work right after install.
I know with vista I had to update to sp1 before it would see my drive
also whats the latest RC build?
i have '7100.0.090421-1700_x86fre_client_en-us_retail_ultimate-grc1culfrer_en_dvd' downloaded from ms a lil while ago.
I just put about 25 gigs of data on this drive. It's an 80 gig drive and has about 20 gigs of space left on it before it's full. Out of all the files I cut and pasted over it got stuck on this last ISO file.. it refused to move this file.. so i stopped the move operation, and rebooted. I never had any trouble with this drive. It's a drive that is hooked up via a USB port. On reboot, to try to copy or move the file again, Windows tells me this drive cannot be accessed and needs to be formatted before it can be used.
I'm currently trying to format a hard drive to exFAT. It's not my main one it will be used for sharing files on my home network. Apparently you can do it just by right clicking the drive and choosing format however I just have the NTFS option, I don't have exFAT. Is there something else I need to do or get so I can format it?
I don't know what is my problem because is not the first time that usb external hard drive is working fine until get damage and said " it need to be formatted " and lost all the INFO because I have to format again the disk to be usefull. Also it is not the same hard disk.
I have a problem that I found it to be strange. My hardisk is GB and I only installed 2.47GB of programs in there. When I go to My computer it shows that I have 116GB free out of 465GB. How is this possible? :/
my os is Windows 7 32bit,lately i was unable to delete my files in my seagate portable harddisk. wen i tried to delete, on right clicking the files there isnt the 'delete' option
I noticed strange things about my HDD. (I have Windows 7 installed on my SDD, and not on the HDD). Says a weird sound and then sounds like it's charging up somehow, during this Windows lags. It usually happens when I Shutdown my machine. After the process, Windows will shut down immediately. Says "Not Responding" sometimes. And it says it at very silly places, like changing the wallpaper. During this, I can see the HDD activity constant lights on. Maybe I should get a new one.
I am wondering why my Harddisk space on windows 7 keeps decreasing. From 30 Gb of free space to 13Gb. As i had 2 partition. All my downloads are in my second partition while i only store applications like games in the first. However i did not download anything but my free space in the first partition kept decreasing. I tried turning off system restore but only about 1Gb was restored. Is this some system settings with windows 7?
