Cannot Get Wireless Or Wired Router Connection To Work
Jun 19, 2012
I have been trying to set up a router at my girlfriend's apartment. I first tried a Linksys router that I had brought from home. I hooked it up from the wall port, to the router, to my computer. I was able to access the normal Linksys wireless setup page at 192.168.0.1 and set up a network fine. I then unplugged my ethernet cable and attempted to connect to the network and was not able to. If I recall, it 'connected' but there was no internet connection.

I formatted both my laptop and desktop computer. When i did with my laptop, everything was great. Wireless still worked. Of course i have my linksys router connected to get the wireless.
I then formatted my desktop. Its a dell. When i did this, everything seemed great. However, i noticed that if i remove my wireless router and just connect my cable modem wired, it works. However, when i connect my wireless router, then my wireless internet works but my WIRED connection does not work. It has this message that says can't connect.
I don't think this has ever happened before. I mean, there were many times where my desktop got formatted and my wired internet worked and i could not get my wireless connection to work. But never had i had my wireless work and my wired connection not work. The one thing i did this time was after i installed the drivers with my windows cd, i then deleted the old windows file that was about 25 gb.

I need to switch from a wired network to a wireless network. Santa is bringing a new laptop. I guess the best way is to change routers. Not sure what to go with.I currently have 2 desktops, PS3 and a TV on the wired network. Ive looked at and read the reviews on a Linksys-Newegg.com - LINKSYS E3000 Wireless Router simultaneous Dual Band Gigabit 802.11a/b/g/n 2.4GHz / 5GHz up to 300Mbps with USB Built-in UPnP AV Media Server and an Asus-Newegg.com - ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server. For the most part the reviews are good but there a bunch of bad ones. Just wondering if any one brand is considered more reliable than the others. I don't know anything about open source firmware. Its mentioned quite a bit in the reviews.

I have a wired linksys router that works fine. I'm not using DHCP on it, its setup at 192.168.1.1. My pc which only has a wired NIC, connects with no problems.I recently bought a tplink wireless router. I changed it so the ip is now 192.168.1.254 (it was 192.168.0.254 originally which meant I couldnt access settings to change from the default password, SSID).
I got the tplink wireless router, so I wouldnt have to be tethered with a wire on my laptop for internet. However, I've wasted time with tech support which I can barely hear or understand.I'd like to get this working, otherwise I'm sending everything back, wireless router and laptop.I can ping both the linksys and tplink from my laptop with no problems.I can get connected to the tplink wireless router without a problem but I cannot get to the internet.

my buddy has a laptop issue when its a wired internet connection. when its wireless, it has no problems with the internet, everything works fine. but when its wired, webpages will still load, but Internet videos wont work, anything that consists of streaming doesn't work, and he cant even use logmein. i have connected other laptops to the same cord and there is no problems. so i know its not the cord and i imagine its not the router since everything still works fine with other computers.

I've got an older Acer Timeline 4810t running Windows 7. We recently switched from Cox Cable internet to AT&T U-Verse, and I've started noticing that my internet connection will randomly go out when I am connected. This occurs whether I am on a wired or wireless connection. Specifically, I will be browsing the web and, randomly, when I try to pull up a website, I get an error indicating that I cannot connect to that website because I am not connected to the internet. When I check the status of my connection in the bottom right corner, it will show that I am connected to the internet. If I disconnect the ethernet cable (or disconnect and reconnect to the wifi network), the internet service is restored, although it continues to randomly lose connection.
I initially thought that it was a U-Verse issue, so AT&T came out and replaced the router. Unfortunately, I still got the random drops. I then thought it was a Windows issue, so I reformatted by hard drive and reinstalled Windows - still having that issue. My wife has an older Macbook and does not have this problem. We also do not have this problem with any of the tablets or phones that connect to the network wirelessly.I am beyond frustrated and do not know what to do. I also don't know if this is a sign that my laptop is at the end of its life, which would be unfortunate since I've only owned the laptop for about 3 years (my last laptop, a Dell, is on year 7 and still churning).

I work as a software developer and have had a lot of experience with wireless networking. I have an old wireless router (unsecured at the moment) that I have connected to a modem, provided by Virgin media. When I use a cable to directly connect to the router, all seems fine, but when I attempt to connect wirelessly I am almost immediately presented with "Windows was unable to connect to [router name]". Other people in my house (on both XP and Vista) can connect to the router without any problems, implying that it is a setting within Windows 7. HOWEVER, I am able to connect to another (unsecured) wireless router. I guess this can only mean that there is a setting on the router that is preventing me from connecting...

I have found a wireless connection near me and connected to it. I saw that my speed is kind of good (about 14 Mb/s), I tried to get this speed higher.I went into the router setup from my browser, and changed some settings from thereOnce changed, I reboot the router to see if it changed my speed. The one setting that blocked my access to internet is MCS. I don't remember if that was off/disabled, but i changed it to MCS7, the last option available for MCS... thing.

Just did a clean windows 7 x64 installation on a build a box computer with a new hard drive. Install went fine. Plugged it in to my 3 month old Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router (WRT54GL) and it doesn't recognize that there is any connection at all. Windows says "No connections are available" and troubleshooting can't identify the problem. The light on the router and on the computer comes on. I am running a wired connected XP computer and 2 Win 7 x32 wireless connected computers just fine. Ran ipconfig /all and it came up as follows:
Host Name.................... : Bottomdweller-PC
Primary DNS suffix.......... :
Node Type ....................: Hybrid
[Code]....
All wires are connected. I've tried booting in Safe mode with networking. I've even connected the computer directly to the cablevision modem. I've installed a USB Linksys wireless adapter and although it installs fine, it doesn't see the router at all. I've also tried reinstalling the router directly on this computer but it doesn't see the router at all.
I've tried setting up a new connection or network, Connecting to a network and choosing a homegroup and sharing option but since you need a network to connect to first I couldn't do it.

Last Friday my main desktop crashed (lost power to the machine) and on restarting the PC was unable to "identify" the network. By identify, I mean, when using "Network and Sharing Centre" on the basic network information page, the PC shows "Identifying" under "active networks" - no matter how long I leave the PC.
PC details
Model: Packard Bell Power x-30
Processor i7 870 @2.93GHz
RAM: 8GB
O/S: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
Modem Router details
Netgear N300 Wireless Dual Band ADSL2+ Modem Router
The main desktop is connected to the modem router (via Ethernet). The modem router is showing no sign of any problems itself, all the dashboard lights look ok (i.e. power is on, port 1 shows the Ethernet connection in place, both wireless bands are lit, the DSL is lit and so is the internet). The household contains a number of laptops which continue to work ok wirelessly and/or wired through Ethernet. Even mobile phones are accessing the wi-fi ok.
The DNS Server address looks ok, as that is the address of the web page to the router. I cannot access that web page (address) via the main desktop, but I can from other devices ok. Having gone through Device Manager the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is showing as "working properly". I have tried pinging the DNS Server address, and that fail. I have gone through a system restore to a previous point (before the day of the crash) but that seems to have made no difference either.
I have attempted to set the IP addresses (for TCP/IPv4) directly
IP address 192.168.0.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
And therefore forced to set the DNS Server address too
Preferred DNS server: 192.68.0.1
But I don't know what to set for the alternate DNS Server, so left blank. This seems to step me forward, in that the device/network is now identified. However the internet access is still not work, as the "DNS Server is not responding".

Recently the power went out in my house. Ever since the power has come back on, I haven't been able to use my wired internet connection. When I look at my devices, my Intel 82566 Gigabit Network Connection has the status "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device." I've tried re-installing and updating the driver, but I can't tell whether I've done this successfully. In any event, it still doesn't work.
I have a Dell XPS 410. Let me know if you need any other information.

It does however, says "Windows cannot connect to the primary DNS Server" or something like that.

I have AT&T U-Verse with a 2Wire (3801 HGV) router. I've had the service for about a month without any issues. As of now, I am able to connect to the internet using WiFi (via my Wii, iPhone, and Laptop), but when trying to make a WIRED connection (via ethernet cable from the 2wire router directly to the PC), all I get is a yellow icon.
If I unplug the ethernet cable and plug it back it, the blue circle appears for a while, then back to the yellow error icon. In the Network and Sharing Center, I am showing my PC with a broken connection (yellow triangle) to "Unidentified Network with a broken "red X" connection the Internet. I thought maybe it was the ethernet cable, so I tried a wired connection from the router to my laptop (also running Windows 7) and it works just fine, so I've determined it must have something to do with the PC itself.
I've tried doing a system rollback, resetting the router itself, made sure the network driver on the PC was up to date and ran the test to make sure it's working properly.....all with no luck. I've tried using Windows to diagnose the problem and I get "Problems Found: Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration". What baffles me is it was working fine up until a few days ago.

I am currently at a hotel and am using their wired internet connection. Everything has been working fine until this weekend when I find that the connection keeps dropping out...specifically:
1) Unable to connect when I plug the network cable into computer on startup...have to plug and remove a couple of times till it connects.
2) Connection drops out every 5-10 minutes or so....have to either unplug and replug cable or enable/disable my network adapter on my laptop a couple of times for it to start up again.
3) The connection problem affects random programs but always internet explorer. I can be on yahoo messenger and msn messenger and even an online game and they won't be affected when the connection drops and internet explorer goes out. However, if I log off any of these programs, then I will have a problem getting back on until I repeat the connection methods listed above. Additionally, some IE pages will continue to function for a while if I click the links in them...just cannot access any new pages...
4) sometimes the connection will drop out but it will show that I am still connected in my taskbar at the bottom of my screen.
Everything else on the computer seems to be working fine, wireless also seems to be working too.

I have three PCs that connect to my home network wireless and two others that connect wired through a hub. Periodically one of the wireless PCs will see the other wireless devices but not the wired ones. This morning I installed some Win 7 updates and after the restart my laptop can't see the wired devices. My wife's Win 7 laptop sees everything. So the problem is intermittent. I have fiddled with Advanced Settings in Network Sharing, such as turning Network Discovery off and back on again. I can't seem to find the silver bullet that will cure this problem when it occurs.

I have two PCs cabled directly to a Netgear WNDR4500 router. This morning, my Windows 7 PC had no network connection when I turned it on. These computers don't get moved, I wasn't messing with the cables beforehand. Everything was fine yesterday. The Troubleshooter suggested I had a broken cable. I tried another cable, but it still would not work. I connected the Windows 7 machine to the same router connection my XP machine uses, but it still did not work.Device Manager reports the Network Adapter is working properly. The system tray network icon reports "Not connected/No connections are available." The Troubleshooter reports, "A network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken." I tried disabling/enabling the Local Area Connection, but it still reports "Network cable unplugged." My gut feeling is that the Ethernet jack on the motherboard is physically broken. But it blows my mind that it would break for no reason.Could an automatic update of some sort disabled networking in a way that it only appears the cable is bad? Could the physical connection at the back of the machine spontaneously break? I suppose I could go buy a network card, which would be cheaper than replacing the motherboard. I'm gonna get cleaned up and head to the store now.

When I'm disconnected, I lose all connectivity both to the internet and on the local lan, so pinging (for example) Google will time out, but also pinging 192.168.1.1 (the router's lan ip address) will also time out
Fix : Start -> dev manager -> network adapter. Double click, open her up and then under "advanced", take a look at "Link Speed & Duplex".
If this is set to auto-negotiation, try re-setting it to 10 or 100mbps Full Duplex, re-start your computer.
It's the network driver that costs me hours of hunting & searching. MOTHERBOARD : ASUS IPIBL-LB Integrated LAN : Realtek 8111C 10/100/1000 Mb/s (Gigabit Ethernet)
