View 9 Replies View Relatedsome of us want to choose what "gets out" and what doesn't. And this info doesn't work since there is nowhere to make such a change in the Windows Firewall window that comes up. Configure it - HOW? Can some one explain how it's configured to actually work without being a programmer writing strange unknown confusing rules for everything that wants to connect to the net? If not, can someone recommend a good free easy to use two-way FireWall like ZoneAlarm that's compatible with Vista?
unfortunately, the outbound filtering has been disabled. I'm not quite sure why Microsoft made this decision but from a security point of view it would have made perfect sense to have it enabled by default. I suspect it's due to Microsoft not wanting to frustrate customers when their internet dependent applications suddenly stopped working.Windows Vista Firewall: How To Turn On Outbound Filtering
* Click the Start Button (Windows Orb)
* In the search bar type "wf.msc" and press the Enter key
* Click the Windows Firewall Properties link
* Change Outbound connections from Allow (default) to Block
From the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security properties you can also configure additional rules for incoming as well as outbound connections.
I suppose there are third-party file managers. I will be looking for one if and when forced to upgrade from XP. Having tried the Windows 7 beta, Windows Explorer (like MSN Messenger) is beginning to look like an ornament. Apparently the same goes for Vista.
When Folder View is enabled, clicking on the folder name does nothing. In Windows XP, you could click on the folder name to expand the folder and automatically close the previous folder at the same time. That was very useful to me. And then there is all the additional junk above the "computer" folder, as if Microsoft thinks "computer" is a bad word to be hidden away. And then there is the fact that font sizes and types
can no longer be adjusted (without screwing up other programs on your system).
Just ahead of the launch of Windows 7 comes Microsoft Security Essentials, their new free anti-virus package based on their award-winning ForeFront corporate security scanning engine. Is it possible to somehow just activate it by calling microsoft or something? I have XP...Well actually 2000, upgraded to XP...So I really couldnt be bothered with installing 2000 again, and then XP, and then vista.

The imminent real release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is reason enough to broach the question. SP1 is an important milestone for an operating system that bloggers and other critics consistently ridicule. Oh, yeah, the channel and enterprises aren't exactly loving Vista either. These 10 things are in no particular order of importance.

I'm trying to do the in-place upgrade - Vista Home Premium to W7 Home Premium. It says: "The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue. There is not enough free space to store temporary Windows installation files. Try using Disk Cleanup, uninstall old programs, or move files to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive." I just installed a new 320 gb hard drive and restored Vista on it. It works perfectly. 220 drive C: and about 80 gb D: so there should be no problem I checked each drive's properties to make sure each had much unused space - I came from an 80 gb disk.

My speaker icon in the taskbar has a red cross on it. When I hover my mouse over it, it says "The audio service is not running", if I right click it I get 3 options
1. Playback devices
2. Recording devices
3. Sounds
I went to my start menu and searched services.msc and checked to see if plug and play, windows audio endpoint builder, and multimedia class scheduler were all set to startup type automatic & all started. they were. so then i go to Windows Audio, right click to properties, and it is stopped. So i click to start it and it says "Windows could not start the Windows Audio service on Local Computer. Error 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process."
