ESATA & Sp1: Showing BIOS Boot Screen But Hangs
Mar 23, 2008
Anybody having as I am problems with eSATA devices since installing SP1? My eSATA drives show in the BIOS boot screen but hangs on the Vista drivers loading bard or just beyond on the black screen before the Windows logo. If I restart without the eSATA device connected/powered up Vista loads normally and if I then switch on/plug in the eSATA drive it is not recognised by windows anywhare. I have looked in disk management in the admin folder and the drive is not there.

I have a new computer with Vista HP x64. I have a problem somewhere which is stopping a successful boot - the screen hangs following the 'PCI Devices Listing. I have tried to re-boot from the original installation CD and I can hear the disk whirring but then it stops and boot-up simply hangs.
I want to go back to square one and re-format my hard disk and start again, but I don't know how to do this, because I don't know how to move past the point at which the boot stalls.

I need to get a new external HDD for my laptop and I'm thinking of = getting an eSATA drive. My question is this: Can any HDD be turned into = an eSATA drive by housing it an enclosure which has an eSATA port or is = there something special about SATA drives? I'm not sure whether I should = buy an already enclosed SATA or buy the HDD and the enclosure separately = (cheaper option).

I had the F7 bios, had to update to the F8 because the bios reports the wrong size on 1 TB hard drives. Flashed the bios from the Qbios utility right out of the bios setup screen and all was well. Vista Ultimate set up fine. No errors or problems. As expected Vista is only reporting 3.5 GB of ram. The first thing I did was install the chipset drivers that I downloaded from gigabyte.
Halfway through the install vista started random hangs and froze during the install. Had to kill the power. Used lkg to get back in. Reinstalled the chipset drivers with no trouble. It's been hang up and freeze randomly ever since. Maybe it's the ram issue? Maybe the chipset drivers? Gonna try removing some ram tonight until I can get some windows updates. If I don't do anything the system is fine. I can even browse the web. It seems to act up when I try to install drivers or updates.

Can a slow boot up of an Acer Aspire 4710 laptop is caused by a not updated BIOS software? The laptop has a Core 2 duo processor and Windows Vista Home Basic.

I have Windows Vista Home Basic SP2 on Dell Inspiron 1525. It used to work fine, but recently when we tried to reboot, it hangs at black screen. I tried to open "Advanced Boot Options" menu by pressing F8, but still it doesn't show any menu and hangs at black screen. I also tried to boot the computer by inserting the Windows Vista SP1 CD but still no luck. It also hangs at black screen. how to get into Safe mode or to "Last known good configuration" option, to atleast try something.

I am unable to get to bios so I can boot to my cd. I have a 64-bit Vista repair disk, but I am unable to boot to either that or an Acronis rescue disk. What can I try? I've tried every F-1 through F-12 combo I can think of...holding them down, pushing repeatedly, holding esc...holding delete, nothing is working. My screen is black...meaning, it is just like it is when in hibernation, etc. During all of my attempts, it did work once and went to my desktop, but unfortunately I tried to restore my acronis image instead of doing a system restore. how I can get into bios so I can get to my boot menu?

Anyone had any experience bypassing BitLocker (basic mode) using the recovery console (i.e., booting to the Windows DVD or rescue CD)? Based on the documentation, seems like it would work (provided BIOS is configured to boot to CD/DVD drive before the HDD). Having said that, would M$ allow such an obvious attack vector? I don't have a machine w/ a TPM right now, so I can't test this myself.

Vista will not load up Normal, once I get to account selection screen, mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. REpair mode did not resolve issue. Attempted various restore points from 4/23/08 going 30 days back. I can then select an account and Vista begins to load up but keyboard unresponsive when initial programs load up, even using PS/2 device connection. Mouse still fuctions until....System seems to "hang" after a "New Device Found" window pop up. Windows will search for drivers for you. Then nothing.. I then lose mouse control...
Attempted Fixes: I have tried a windows repair disk and no luck. I have tried numerous restore points, same result.. I have EVEN tried to access hard drive via UBUNTU Linux and Knoppix..with both systems not being able to mount device.. Current Status: I have disabled USB support in the BIOS.. and now I can get Vista to load up USING PS/2 devices...but what do I do now? 1. I can't back up the data since no USB support hence no attaching external devices such as usb hard drive... How do I resolve issue, I should not have disable USB to have Vista "function" should I

Toshiba Satellite vista home prem.sp2 32. 4GigRam 1.90bios
Ihave read all the posts in as many threads as i can find related to this issue and they seem to identify the utility chkdsk problems of some sort. I think my problem is not related to that and happens during the initial splash screen with the Toshiba/AMD on it with the solid bar that used to speed across the screen that now hangs, stalls or whatever at a point beyond half way. It can stay there for minutes and I dont know why. I have checked all the logs, events and the like and find no issues the diagnostics from toshiba and micro both come out fine. i use the couple of aftermarket utilities as well to find no problem but it does take loads of time. If it did it all the time I would wonder but this will zip across and move on to the next screen with the moving lights microsoft screen some times. It used to be the other way round; stall infrequently. I dont know what would be a worthwhile use of time to fix this if it needs to be fixed. It will take maybe 2 or 3 re boots to get all the icons to line up in the tray as well after one of these protracted boot up experiences. I dont know what to eliminate or bring back to the start up lineup. If I go the safe mode, it , of course, loads up like a jet. Something is going on there but I dont know what it is and would like any information someone with more experience and wisdom than I have can provide. and a fix if need be.

I am attempting to re-load my Vista Home Premium 64 bit and I am stuck, I have gone through most of the process until just after it copies all files, installs features and updates etc. It then restarts and it then hangs on a black screen with the message 'Please wait while windows sets up your computer'. But nothing happens no matter how long I leave it. There is no sign of activity.

I've been trying to install my audio recording software(Cubase) but the installer just hangs at the splash screen before I can do anything. It used to install fine on my XP machine and it's said to be compatible with Vista.I'm on a q6600 with 4gb of ram and running Home premium.Running it with xp compatibility mode doesn't work and neither does running it with admin rights(I'm on admin account anyway).I also tried it with UAC off.But it works on my friend's dell xps laptop with vista home premium, installs and runs fine.Doesn't hang on the installer splash screen.Naturally this made me think it was due to my hardware BUT I actually got the installer working in vista home premium under MS Virtual pc 2007.I've also tried booting up into safe mode and trying it to no avail.

The problem is there is a password on the bios (where this came out of i don't know) and I need to boot from CD but I cannot get in to change the order, also this means I cannot use bios clearing password tools as they are off a cd. I think the laptop holds the bios password in the eeprom and not the bios battery.I have striped down the laptop a far bit but could not find the bios battery. The problem is I am on holiday at the moment and I don't really want to strip it totally as I am in a hotel, but I really need to get this going.asap
I have tryed some default password for the bios manufacturer, but nothing. I wiped my laptop before and put on vista 64, but when I redownloaded the acer empowering support wiget(that would let me change the order their) that does not work and I cannot find anything on google about the issue. Is there any programs that can do this from windows?

So have an intel mobo, and there is a BIOS update for it, but the windows exe that Intel provides to flash it right from inside windows doesn't work in Vista 64 Ultimate. So My other options are to create a bootable USB stick or a bootable CD. I actually don't have a USB stick I can use for this, so I want to go the CD route. Either way I don't know how I can make a bootable Vista disk that gets me to a command prompt that I can put these bios files on so then I can run the bios update. I think this BIOS update could solve some problems I'm having getting things running smoothly.

I have Vista Ulimate 64-bit and everytime that I reboot I get a black screen before the Microsoft Windows scrolling bar.
This is the sequence.
- I reboot.
- I get my bios information screen.
- I get the white, blinking line in the upper left corner of the screen.
- Then the screen goes black with no hard drive activity.
I then can perform a Complete PC restore from my second partition on the same SATA Hard Drive and I will then be able to boot into Vista with no problem.....until I reboot, then I get the Black screen again. It is a vicious cycle.
I have tried to remove video cards (2 x 8800 GTS), memory (4 GB), sound cards (X-Fi Music), load the default bios settings....nothing works. Only a Complete PC Restore cures it, but only until I need to reboot the PC.

i run Vista home x64, and when the updates download and install everything works until the restart. After the bios and windows screen i get a blue screen telling me that windows is unable to restart and to either restart the computer or contact the administrator. So i restart and i get the option to start windows normally or run the repair, if i select normal i get the same blue screen, so i run the repair and it does the system restore which only partially works. i have to run another restore with a point that i have selected for everything back to normal. i have disabled the auto updates and have been hiding new ones because i'm sick of sitting through two restores.

Blue screen every so often. But does any one out there know if that board has a jumper that we would have to change to flash the bios? I've read all (well most) of the posts in this thread, but nothing seems to address my exact issue of having a black screen, which means that I'm not able to access the BIOS. I can hear my laptop fan running, and every 20 seconds or so the computer powers off then reboots immediately, but nothing on the screen.

I tried to search for a solution for this problem but i dont know how to word the query. So i restart my machine and every things going good video display and i can press del to get into the bios, i can move around in there and change whatever. Once vista loads the keyboard and mouse still are receiving power (lights are still on) but are non responsive. Ive tried reseting the cmos and puting everything back to defaults in the bios menu but to no avail. The weird thing is that it happened out of no where. It was working fine and my roommate (and i believe him) came home turned it on to find these problems. Its seems like all my onboard input/output connectors are not working.
