Anyone had any experience bypassing BitLocker (basic mode) using the recovery console (i.e., booting to the Windows DVD or rescue CD)? Based on the documentation, seems like it would work (provided BIOS is configured to boot to CD/DVD drive before the HDD). Having said that, would M$ allow such an obvious attack vector? I don't have a machine w/ a TPM right now, so I can't test this myself.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am unable to get to bios so I can boot to my cd. I have a 64-bit Vista repair disk, but I am unable to boot to either that or an Acronis rescue disk. What can I try? I've tried every F-1 through F-12 combo I can think of...holding them down, pushing repeatedly, holding esc...holding delete, nothing is working. My screen is black...meaning, it is just like it is when in hibernation,etc. During all of my attempts, it did work once and went to my desktop, but unfortunately I tried to restore my acronis image instead of doing a system restore. how I can get into bios so I can get to my boot menu?
View 6 Replies View RelatedVista will not load up Normal, once I get to account selection screen, mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. REpair mode did not resolve issue. Attempted various restore points from 4/23/08 going 30 days back. I can then select an account and Vista begins to load up but keyboard unresponsive when initial programs load up, even using PS/2 device connection. Mouse still fuctions until....System seems to "hang" after a "New Device Found" window pop up. Windows will search for drivers for you. Then nothing.. I then lose mouse control...
Attempted Fixes: I have tried a windows repair disk and no luck. I have tried numerous restore points, same result.. I have EVEN tried to access hard drive via UBUNTU Linux and Knoppix..with both systems not being able to mount device.. The problem is there is a password on the bios (where this came out of i don't know) and I need to boot from CD but I cannot get in to change the order, also this means I cannot use bios clearing password tools as they are off a cd. I think the laptop holds the bios password in the eeprom and not the bios battery.I have striped down the laptop a far bit but could not find the bios battery. The problem is I am on holiday at the moment and I don't really want to strip it totally as I am in a hotel, but I really need to get this going.asap
I have tryed some default password for the bios manufacturer, but nothing. I wiped my laptop before and put on vista 64, but when I redownloaded the acer empowering support wiget(that would let me change the order their) that does not work and I cannot find anything on google about the issue. Is there any programs that can do this from windows?

View 6 Replies View RelatedSo have an intel mobo, and there is a BIOS update for it, but the windows exe that Intel provides to flash it right from inside windows doesn't work in Vista 64 Ultimate. So My other options are to create a bootable USB stick or a bootable CD. I actually don't have a USB stick I can use for this, so I want to go the CD route. Either way I don't know how I can make a bootable Vista disk that gets me to a command prompt that I can put these bios files on so then I can run the bios update. I think this BIOS update could solve some problems I'm having getting things running smoothly.
View 6 Replies View RelatedAnybody having as I am problems with eSATA devices since installing SP1? My eSATA drives show in the BIOS boot screen but hangs on the Vista drivers loading bard or just beyond on the black screen before the Windows logo. If I restart without the eSATA device connected/powered up Vista loads normally and if I then switch on/plug in the eSATA drive it is not recognised by windows anywhare. I have looked in disk management in the admin folder and the drive is not there.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded from Windows XP Service Pack 3 to Vista on a Toshiba Qosmio G35-AVA600 which has two 80GB SATA hard drives. In Windows XP the drive was seen as one 180GB hard drive. No problem. After I installed Vista the second drive is not showing and I can't format it from disk management services because it is not shown.
The wierd thing is that I am not missing any files, but perhaps I had not used any space on the second hard drive, therefore I wouldn't be missing any files. Also, after installing Vista I checked the BIOS and it does not see my second hard drive (it lists second hard drive and says "None"), nor does My Computer but it is there as I have made no hardware changes. All I did was upgrade from Windows XP Service Pack 3 to installing Windows Vista. I have the latest RAID drivers from Toshiba which was updated after I installed Vista. The latest BIOS was installed from Toshiba website BEFORE I upgraded and it WAS listed in the BIOS. I've read the many threads on second ATA hard drives but no one mentions that their BIOS does not recognize the drive as well as Vista.
I've had an odd annoying problem for a while now with explorer... it's probably something in the registry but i don't know what. Anyways, here's a screenshot.

Anyway i am up and running but on a crappy 20G Maxtor b/c my BIOS won't recognize the SATA drive. I have the SATA controller enabled and i have tried all 4 connectors with no luck. Updated BIOS still no luck. Windows won't see it either. Tried installing the Nvidia drivers of the support disk did not think that work an well it didn't. Actually i'm sure it's the stupid Nvidia chipset but i updated it and still no SATA action.I have never seen a modern board that did not recognize SATA drives automatically i have tried 2 different drives a working Samsung and the new EXCELSTORE/Hitachi and in tandem as well.On a lighter note i already have her OC'ed at 2.5Mhz on a whole 512 MB of RAM........One of my sticks was DOA teach me not to buy RAM i am not familiar with.AMD Opteron 1212 Dual core/ASRock ALiveNF6G with a Nvidia 6100/nForce430 chipset.

As she wants to start fresh.
basically the original CD DVD/RW drive was 1st coming up with "your CD doesn't have the correct drivers" i was thinking well hows that work when its in device manager and u can boot this CD to get to this stage o_O...............

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had Vista x64 installed for about 2 full months now and I've recently begun having a lot of problems. One being: 187 seconds. What the hell? Before you ask, here are my specs. Lots of fast memory, a fast processor, 7200RPM boot drive (not listed), and ****ing awful performance. What gets me is that the delayed boot time is before I even see the "Welcome" screen.
My current boot time distribution:
1. BIOS does all its fancy stuff very quickly (about 6-7 seconds or so)
2. I get to my boot loader and it defaults to Vista after 5 seconds (dual-booting Vista/Ubuntu).
3. I then see the Vista loading screen (black screen with green loading bar) for about 4-5 seconds................
I've upgraded my machine at some point in the last year, where I added a new 500GB drive and moved my C: partition across to it. The previous 250GB drive was left in for additional storage. Just recently (while upgrading my BIOS) I realised that my system was still booting from the 250GB drive even though Windows was on the other disk. There is a fair possibility in the not too distant future that I'll replace the 250GB disk with a larger disk, in which case I won't be able to boot. Is there a safe and reliable way to change it so that the system boots from the 500GB disk?

When VISTA installs it tells me the first drive is not recognized as boot drive and won't load. I tried to install on second drive and get a error message about a volume does not meet VISTA criteria (or something like that)and won't install. These are both brand new drives. Both drives are correctly identified in the BIOS.
View 7 Replies View RelatedRight now i am booting off of an 80gb IDE hard drive but i want to clone the drive onto a 150gb sata drive and make the sata drive my boot drive. I have used Acronis True Image to clone the hard drive. I restarted and everything copied over in DOS successfully but then i tried to boot off of the sata drive and everything seemed to work out fine.. Vista load bar showed up, i was able to enter my password to log in and then it said preparing desktop like it was the first time i installed vista. It was stuck on that screen for a few mins and then a blank blue screen just came up. it seemed like it was the default background for Windows 2000 or something like that and it just stayed there. So now i'm back to booting off of the IDE drive...

Vista is still virgin and not other programs are installed, so changing it location from D to C drive will not influance any applications. I know how to create hard drive image. My question is how to make that new c drive with Vista on it bootable again. Is there any utility I can use?
View 4 Replies View RelatedSometimes when I install drivers I get the message that my BIOS is out of date (including updates from AMD) if I go to the Phoenix site it says go to the motherboard manufacturer or run Biosagent if you use this you pay for the update but you do get this info so is it worth e-mail gateway support, using the boisagent or just leave well alone.

Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
My brother has just built a computer and can't get it working. The problem is that when he starts it he gets to the screen where he can choose to enter BIOS. 9/10 times he can't do anything from there but 1/10 times he can press delete and then it says "loading bios" but it freezes there (he waited 30 mins nothing happened). Does anyone know what the problem mihht be?

licenses for both Vista Ultimate and XP Pro. Is there any way to install either Vista or XP on a USB drive and install their games on that. When they want to play, they can just boot their drive off USB, making use of the hardware on my pc?
Just configured according to the steps above but when I do a test email send it doesn't send. I get a pop up error message: Message could not be sent. An error has occured. Thats all it says. No error codes or anything.

I am working on moving over to Windows Vista, in hopes of going officially to Windows 7. I know I should be checking for Windows 7 but I have a full Vista Ultimate 64Bit.
