SATA Drive Not Detected In BIOS.

Aug 3, 2007

Ok this is really starting to irritate me i am beginning to remeber why i always use ASUS boards!  Anyway i am up and running but on a crappy 20G Maxtor b/c my BIOS won't recognize the SATA drive.  I have the SATA controller enabled and i have tried all 4 connectors with no luck.  Updated BIOS still no luck.  Windows won't see it either.  Tried installing the Nvidia drivers of the support disk did not think that work an well it didn't.   Actually i'm sure it's the stupid Nvidia chipset but i updated it and still no SATA action.I have never seen a modern board that did not recognize SATA drives automatically i have tried 2 different drives a working Samsung and the new EXCELSTORE/Hitachi and in tandem as well.On a lighter note i already have her OC'ed at 2.5Mhz on a whole 512 MB of RAM........One of my sticks was DOA teach me not to buy RAM i am not familiar with.AMD Opteron 1212 Dual core/ASRock ALiveNF6G with a Nvidia 6100/nForce430 chipset.

Cloning A Drive: Tranfer Entire Drive Incuding All Files And The Operating System From Current IDE HDD To A New SATA Drive

May 2, 2008

I am Using Vista Ultimate 64. I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)

Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.

I also checked my autoplay settings but everything was fine there.

Removed The Drive From The Enclosure And Tried Another SATA Drive

Sep 20, 2009

A few days back I had posted about an eSATA data drive I had been using with XP not being readable with Vista or Win7. I removed the drive from the enclosure and tried another SATA drive. (both drives are made by Western Digital). the second drive was removed from a Win2k machine when it started developing bad clusters. Vista and Win7 could read that with no problem. so at least I now know the problem is not due to the enclosure itself

Also can conclude that the problem has nothing to do with Win7 not being able to read older versions of NTFS. (Reads a win2k drive with no problems) and for any who had missed the previous post:

Win7 and Vista can run CHKDSK on the drive and read it find
....and find *no* problems

but disc management sees the drive as "RAW"

trying to read the drive from Windows Explorer gives me the error message that the drive is not formatted or the file system is corrupt

Installing SATA Drive As Third Master Drive

Mar 26, 2008

I have an MSI K9NSLI Platinum motherboard with a brand new Seagate ST3250410AS 250GB SATA drive attached as the third master drive. The primary master has an old school ATAPI DVDRW. Keep in mind there is no way I can change a setting in the BIOS (or I don't know how to do it) so that the SATA device is the primary master drive, so these are permanent settings; the primary master and slave drives connect to the IDE connector on my mobo. Now, I?ve tried and tried and tried, but I can?t do a clean install nor an upgrade of Windows Vista Home Premium x86 (from DVD) on that SATA drive when it is hooked up alone (as the third master drive)...........

Installing On SATA Drive As Third Master Drive

Mar 23, 2008

I have an MSI K9NSLI Platinum motherboard with a brand new Seagate ST3250410AS 250GB SATA drive attached as the third master drive. The primary master has an old school ATAPI DVDRW. Keep in mind there is no way I can change a setting in the BIOS (or I don't know how to do it) so that the SATA device is the primary master drive, so these are permanent settings; the primary master and slave drives connect to the IDE connector on my mobo. Now, I?ve tried and tried and tried, but I can?t do a clean install nor an upgrade of Windows Vista Home Premium x86 (from DVD) on that SATA drive when it is hooked up alone (as the third master drive).

But here?s the kicker. If I plug in my old regular ATA IDE drive as the primary master drive, the DVDRW as the primary slave, and leave the SATA drive as the third master drive, I can install Vista with no problems onto the SATA drive. I just have to leave my old regular ATA IDE drive plugged in as the primary master. If I try to disconnect my old regular ATA IDE drive but leave the SATA drive plugged in by itself, Windows
Vista won?t boot.

What is the deal here? How come I can have the SATA by itself as the third master and install WINDOWS XP with no problems and have a workable system, but VISTA doesn?t install. I just paid over $250 for Vista and I have to use this kind of setup to get Windows Vista to work on a SATA drive by itself? This is lame. I want to take that old IDE hard drive out of the box.

Here are my install screens:

First screen: ?Windows is loading files.? bar goes to 100% and the screen advances

Second screen: Black screen with moving green bar and Copyright Microsoft Corporation on bottom. The green bar just keeps moving on forever and doesn?t go to the next screen (which would be the colorful ?Install Windows? dialog box where you choose the language, time/currency, and keyboard, etc.)

Cloning IDE Boot Drive To Sata Drive

Aug 22, 2008

Right now i am booting off of an 80gb IDE hard drive but i want to clone the drive onto a 150gb sata drive and make the sata drive my boot drive. I have used Acronis True Image to clone the hard drive. I restarted and everything copied over in DOS successfully but then i tried to boot off of the sata drive and everything seemed to work out fine.. Vista load bar showed up, i was able to enter my password to log in and then it said preparing desktop like it was the first time i installed vista. It was stuck on that screen for a few mins and then a blank blue screen just came up. it seemed like it was the default background for Windows 2000 or something like that and it just stayed there. So now i'm back to booting off of the IDE drive...

C Drive Hasn't Detected Anything

Apr 4, 2010

My C drive is filling up for some reason. I haven't installed anything new to it in a long time and have next to nothing downloaded on it. The drive is 70GB of which about 17 GB is stuff I've added. However, I apparently have used up 68 GB!! ANtivirus (AVG, Norton previous) hasn't detected anything.

It appears my C:Windows is 19 GB and another file, C:UsersMyname is using up another 16 GB. Can I reduce these, and how? Also, that leaves another 26GB completely unaccounted for! What's going on here?

Set Up Vista On A SATA Drive?

Mar 23, 2008

Decided I needed a new PC, so bought and assembled all new components and started to install Vista Business. The HDD is a 500GB SATA drive, the DVD/RW is SATA. 8 GB RAM, but took that down to 4 GB since it isn't Vista 64bit edition..

Anyway, Vista started to install but got a BSOD within a minute. Checked all hardware settings and tried again, and again. Every time it gets a different STOP error. So used an XP CD to format the drive figuring that was the problem. It finished formatting then said it couldn't copy a file kodak??.??? Tried Vista again - BSOD.

Tried booting to the motherboard driver CD to find SATA drives but my only options on boot up was to set up a RAID array. I'm happy with just a normal non-RAID setup. There is no floppy drive. The Maxtor CD would not boot at all. So, how do you set up Vista on a new SATA drive? Is there a set of steps to take that isn't listed in the drive or motherboard installation booklets?

External Hard Drive With E SATA

Feb 6, 2009

I run Vista Home Premium on a self build computer with an Asus P5B Delux motherboard. It has an e SATA socket and I recently bought a Caddy for an External Drive to use as a back up with Windows Live OneCare. The drive is a 320G Seagate SATA2 ST3320620AS identical to the internal drive in my computer and the Caddy has eSATA and USB2 sockets. Everthing works fine if I connect via USB2 but the external drive is not recognised when I connect with eSATA. It may not make a lot of difference in practice but I would still like to be able to use eSATA. Does anyone know why the e Sata drive isn't recognised? Is this a Vista problem or perhaps there is a setting that needs adjusting?

SATA Drive 1/10th The Speed Of IDE

Mar 23, 2008

I have a Gigabyte board with an AMD quad core, 2GB memory, nothing special. Latest BIOS. I loaded Vista on a fresh SATA II drive, and the performance was terrible. (All tests use the same 850MB AVI file, copied from various locations)

Copy from NAS to C: drive

SATA - 3GB/s
IDE - 10GB/s

Copy from C: drive to D: drive

SATA - 4GB/s
IDE - 22GB/s

Copy from C: drive to USB 2.0 external drive

SATA - 16GB/s

Something really weird is going on. These are fresh installs, right out of the box. No drivers, no patches. This all started because my fully configured system was so slow. I thought it might be SW related and wiped the drive clean.

Move Vista To The SATA Drive?

Apr 5, 2008

I am having problems trying to figure how to get vista on a 400g SATA drive. I have tried with both 32 and 64. When I boot from the disk and do a custom install.. the drive just is not there. So I gave up on that and plugged in a smaller IDE drive and of course Vista installs no problem and guess what.. I can now use my Large Sata. Problem is that Vista runs extremly slow on the IDE. how I can move Vista to the SATA drive or at least do a fresh install to it, then I could transfer my settings.

32GB SSD SATA Boot Drive?

Feb 6, 2009

Does anyone have experience using a solid state disk as Vista boot drive? From what I've been reading an SATA SSD boots much faster than the fastest spinning disk and is clearly much more reliable. The 32GB SSD's are not that expensive now and I'm thinking a system with an SSD boot drive and reasonably fast hard drive for swap, temp, logs, etc. might be a stellar performer. There are some caveats with SSD's though: they have slow write speeds so you need to disable/relocate as much write activity as possible. Also, SSD's have a finite number of write cycles they can perform, but with moving most of the write activity to a HD their lifetime seems to exceed even the best mechanical drive.

SATA Connector Primary Drive

My new PC (with Vista Home Premium 32-bit) has SATA connectors on the motherboard. Two were already in use (hard drive and DVD drive) and two were open. I added a second hard drive, and plugged the cable into the SATA connector beside the primary drive. When I put a second hard drive in a PC with IDE/ATA connectors, I always keep them on separate cables/connectors for maximum transfer speed between the two hard drives. My question is does it make any difference with SATA which connector you use?

SATA Drive Doesn't Working

Jan 26, 2010

I currently have a SATA drive in my desktop. I desire to add a second SATA drive to increase storage space. In reading about the drives many places speak of the need for special SATA cables. I have not pulled the case yet on my computer but, with older computers, there have always been extra connectors on the ribbon and power cable to connect to additional drives. My basic question is if I purchase a "bare" drive, do I need some sort of cables to connect it as a second drive in my computer??

Resolution: Enter the Boot device menu(By pressing the F12 or F9 key on the manufacturer logo).

Change the Boot Device

Select HARD DRIVE as the 1st boot priority and press enter. The system may or may not boot...

BIOS AND Not Seeing 2nd Hard Drive

Jun 10, 2008

I have upgraded from Windows XP Service Pack 3 to Vista on a Toshiba Qosmio G35-AVA600 which has two 80GB SATA hard drives. In Windows XP the drive was seen as one 180GB hard drive. No problem. After I installed Vista the second drive is not showing and I can't format it from disk management services because it is not shown.

The wierd thing is that I am not missing any files, but perhaps I had not used any space on the second hard drive, therefore I wouldn't be missing any files. Also, after installing Vista I checked the BIOS and it does not see my second hard drive (it lists second hard drive and says "None"), nor does My Computer but it is there as I have made no hardware changes. All I did was upgrade from Windows XP Service Pack 3 to installing Windows Vista. I have the latest RAID drivers from Toshiba which was updated after I installed Vista. The latest BIOS was installed from Toshiba website BEFORE I upgraded and it WAS listed in the BIOS. I've read the many threads on second ATA hard drives but no one mentions that their BIOS does not recognize the drive as well as Vista.
