I'm trying to install an additional (SATA) hard drive - it appears I need a cable that can connect to the 8 pin power connection on the hard drive and then to the EIDE 15 pin connector on the cable coming from the hard drive in the computer. I can't find a cable that can do this. Do I need to combine two cables (15 to 4 pin, then 4 to 8?)
View 7 RepliesI am trying to do a clean install on a newly built system but Vista can not see my SATA hard drive. I have a Seagate 7200 barracuda 320 GB SATA HD and a Giga-byte P35 Mobo. Not knowing if it was a Vista issue or a hardware issue, I put in a XP installation disk and XP could recognize the drive. I stopped the install and tried loading some drivers off of the disk from Gigabyte. Vista still can not see the hard drive, but now when I throw the XP install disk back in, it can not see the hard drive either.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a 750 GB sata 3.0 HDD which i'm trying to connect to a sata RAID card or motherboard. I've connected my hard drive using an sata cable to both my motherboard and my raid card. When i try either this prevents windows froms starting. The motherboard sata is 3.0gb/s, the raid card is 1.5gb/s. I've tried all jumper settings and made sure all cables are working. I have another sata drive that works with everything. The hdd that works is a samsung, the hdd that doesn't is a western digital recertified.
I have an sata enclosure which has its own powersupply and a sata to esata cable. My hdd above only works when i put the hdd in the enclosure and connect the sata to esata to the motherboard. The enclosure does not work with the raid card.
My present motherboard has 2 internal SATA connections which I use for my C and D drives, I wish to add another one for a new DVD player,Can this be accomplished by installing a special PCI card in a spare slot of my MB? What make do you recommend?

I run Vista Home Premium on a self build computer with an Asus P5B Delux motherboard. It has an e SATA socket and I recently bought a Caddy for an External Drive to use as a back up with Windows Live OneCare. The drive is a 320G Seagate SATA2 ST3320620AS identical to the internal drive in my computer and the Caddy has eSATA and USB2 sockets. Everthing works fine if I connect via USB2 but the external drive is not recognised when I connect with eSATA. It may not make a lot of difference in practice but I would still like to be able to use eSATA. Does anyone know why the e Sata drive isn't recognised? Is this a Vista problem or perhaps there is a setting that needs adjusting?

The reason behind this is these hard drives contains a scanner inside them which periodically scans the hard drive to check for error and tries to recover them.
Resolution: Enter the Boot device menu(By pressing the F12 or F9 key on the manufacturer logo).
Change the Boot Device
Select HARD DRIVE as the 1st boot priority and press enter. The system may or may not boot...
I am having trouble getting Vista to recognize the IDE hard drive I am trying to add. I have Vista Home Basic running off of my SATA HD and want to add IDE as extra storage. I have it all hooked up, IDE hard drive is set to master on same controller as my DVD drive, but windows isn't recognizing the HD properly, it recognizes it as a new drive, but it is coming up as a floppy drive, anyone have any idea how to remedy this? Will be watching thread for next 20 mins or so, will keep up on replies and supply additional info if needed.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am trying bring-up a new SATA Hard Drive through PCIe to SATA AHCI Host Card. We find that Vista recognized the AHCI Controller and it shows up in the Device Manager. It successfully allocates the memory and IRQ, and says that the Device is working properly. But the HDD is not recognized. When we look at the PCIe analyser, we see that the OS is continuously polling the AHCI Interrupt Status Register (Addr: 0x08). This register is reading 0x0 all the time.

Would someone know of any utility or method to restore a SATA hard drive's factory full capacity size? During partitioning my drive, it went from 595GB (640GB Drive) to only 32GB. Since it is a 64-Bit system, I can't find a utility to restore the drive's full capacity.
I have a Sony Vaio Laptop, and want to "downgrade" to XP! I have completely formatted my hard drive, and set my laptop to boot from CD. It starts loading drivers etc but after about 3/4 mins it says that it cant find a hard disc to install to?

I thought I saw a post from someone who was having this same issue but couldn't find it. I am trying to check an ext hard drive for errors and when I try to "safely remove it" and keep getting the message that it is still in use when there is nothing using it, the light is steady. This happens for both my drives often. What gives?
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy laptop motherboard fried, so I removed the hard drive and purchased a caddy. When I plug the hard drive in to my new desktop PC I am able to see that only 4GB of the 100 GB capacity is available (as should be the case). However, I cannot see any of my files on there (folders I had created on the desktop etc.).
The only folders I can see are PerfLogs, Program Files, SwSetup, Users, Windows and two of my personal folders (both containing some photos). I really need to find the rest of my files as I have 12GBs of photos and videos of my baby boy on there, and would be gutted if I cannot access them again (for obvious reasons). Nothing else is important.
My computer crashed and I currently have my hard drive set up externally to copy the information off of it onto another computer. I was using Windows Mail that came with Vista on my old computer when it crashed. I've been able to salvage my data, but would like to find my messages stored in my Inbox in Windows Mail. I cannot open the program (Windows Mail) currently, but will be able to open it when my new computer arrives. For now, I'm copying needed files off my hard drive and storing them temporarily on my children's computer. I do not know what folders from Windows Mail, or Windows perhaps, that I need to save in order to hopefully open my saved inbox messages.

So what I want to know is how to save my Family Tree Makers files to it. And once I do that how do I know for sure it is opening from my new drive and not my computer C: drive? I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)
Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.

I want to -Dual boot between Vista64 and Windows XP32
So far -I have done everything to this machine from creating a virtual window in Vista64, to going into the command prompt from vista boot disk and running diskpart to clear hard drive.
I currently have -Two partitions on one disk. Primary 200GIG and Healthy 265GIG -Windows Vista Home Premium64 installed and running
The problems im having -every time try to boot from CD and run the windows xp setup, it is UNABLE to find ANY HARD DRIVES!
I have researched that
- I must have the disk partitioned
- Windows XP must be installed first
- I have to play with the boot.ini
- If i install vista32 it will be more successful
The errors I have gotten -STOP: 0x0000008E - i researched this and it said one option is to take out the excess RAM
I will be happy if - By the end of this weekend I can successfully run XP or both OS's in dual boot.
I need to go through all this trouble because - Digidesign has not written software for 64 bit proccessing yet. I need to make music.
I recently had a laptop not recognize its own operating system. I figured if I were able to load Windows Vista on to an external hard drive and boot the computer from that external hard drive I should be able to recover some files and major downloads before I reformat the computer. However, Vista instillation will not install through USB2.0. Is there any way to install Vista onto an external hard drive? How and what do I do to get it done?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have 2 pc's with xp, each with ide drives, One crashed, so I removed the hard drive to run as a slave on my other pc to see if I could retrieve the data. When I did this, the ribbon pulled loose just enough to shut down my drive (yes on the good one). I now have to reboot with original boot disk, which I no longer have. So I go and buy Vista Home Premium, then first am able remove the data (via knoppix) from the old crashed drive (first one). So I put this drive into the 2nd pc as master, and attempt to install Vista.
I get past the "loading software" and then the "windows" progess bar screens, and the screen goes to a black screed with nothing but a mouse arrow on it.
I Install my 2nd hard drive as a storage drive. Then I booted up and got an error loading OS. I rebooted and hit F10 to set up and found that the storage drive is no# 1 and my main drive is no#3. How do I get the storage drive to be after my main drive. So it will boot up from it. My main drive is a SATA. I have a Parserio Compaq SR5601p with Vista. The new drive I am trying to Install as storage is a Western Digital EIDE160GB WDCaviar@SE-7200RPM

When I try to install additional 2Gb, I get a blue-screen every time I boot (some blue screens have an IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL, most have no error msg). Is there a way to determine if my installation of Vista already has this installed? I've already checked the Control Panel/Windows Update/Review Update History, it's not in there, I thought it may be in the core install on the DVD?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently re-arrange my 4 500GB SATA drives to provide better cooling. The system rebooted fine but every two or three days on booting Vista would kick me back to the BIOS starting screen, or, completely freeze, requiring a reboot. The system then wouldn't boot saying it couldn't find an operating system. Turning the computor off, and a restart would fix the problem until the next time. I resolved this by rearranging my hard drives so that Vistas C drive was the Motherboards logical boot drive. An obvious solution. My question is two fold. Why would BIOS find the Boot Drive sometimes and not others (The disks are not faulty), I perhaps don't fully understand how SATA operates. I have had no further problems to date.

I have a couple of hard drives (Maxtor) that I would like to recover some files from but when plugged into the new computer, they just don't register. Can't see anything when using IDE or have the hard drives on an adaptor for SATA. The old drives do have XP Pro on them. Is there a clash between OS? How can I read and recover the info I need? I have gone to the Microsoft site to make sure I have all the updates. I have gone to Maxtor to download the up to date installation software. Still nothing. I have checked the BIOS and the SATA ports are initiated (and have talked to the manufacturer HP about the issue and they can't see a problem). I have been able to recognize the old hard drives when I still had the old computer (cleaned it up and gave it to my son with a new hard drive installed). Would like to recover data and start using the old drives as a back up system.

I have uninstalled google desktop.
The system is totally virus and spyware free, and the anti-virus is not scanning (schedule scan disabled). All Vista updates are installed. Nothing has helped. I've run out of things to disable. I'm running Vista Business SP1, Dual Core 2.2 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM.
A few days back I had posted about an eSATA data drive I had been using with XP not being readable with Vista or Win7. I removed the drive from the enclosure and tried another SATA drive. (both drives are made by Western Digital). the second drive was removed from a Win2k machine when it started developing bad clusters. Vista and Win7 could read that with no problem. so at least I now know the problem is not due to the enclosure itself
Also can conclude that the problem has nothing to do with Win7 not being able to read older versions of NTFS. (Reads a win2k drive with no problems) and for any who had missed the previous post:
Win7 and Vista can run CHKDSK on the drive and read it find
....and find *no* problems
but disc management sees the drive as "RAW"
trying to read the drive from Windows Explorer gives me the error message that the drive is not formatted or the file system is corrupt
I have an MSI K9NSLI Platinum motherboard with a brand new Seagate ST3250410AS 250GB SATA drive attached as the third master drive. The primary master has an old school ATAPI DVDRW. Keep in mind there is no way I can change a setting in the BIOS (or I don't know how to do it) so that the SATA device is the primary master drive, so these are permanent settings; the primary master and slave drives connect to the IDE connector on my mobo. Now, I?ve tried and tried and tried, but I can?t do a clean install nor an upgrade of Windows Vista Home Premium x86 (from DVD) on that SATA drive when it is hooked up alone (as the third master drive)...........
