I thought I saw a post from someone who was having this same issue but couldn't find it. I am trying to check an ext hard drive for errors and when I try to "safely remove it" and keep getting the message that it is still in use when there is nothing using it, the light is steady. This happens for both my drives often. What gives?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to do a clean install on a newly built system but Vista can not see my SATA hard drive. I have a Seagate 7200 barracuda 320 GB SATA HD and a Giga-byte P35 Mobo. Not knowing if it was a Vista issue or a hardware issue, I put in a XP installation disk and XP could recognize the drive. I stopped the install and tried loading some drivers off of the disk from Gigabyte. Vista still can not see the hard drive, but now when I throw the XP install disk back in, it can not see the hard drive either.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy laptop motherboard fried, so I removed the hard drive and purchased a caddy. When I plug the hard drive in to my new desktop PC I am able to see that only 4GB of the 100 GB capacity is available (as should be the case). However, I cannot see any of my files on there (folders I had created on the desktop etc.).
The only folders I can see are PerfLogs, Program Files, SwSetup, Users, Windows and two of my personal folders (both containing some photos). I really need to find the rest of my files as I have 12GBs of photos and videos of my baby boy on there, and would be gutted if I cannot access them again (for obvious reasons). Nothing else is important.
My computer crashed and I currently have my hard drive set up externally to copy the information off of it onto another computer. I was using Windows Mail that came with Vista on my old computer when it crashed. I've been able to salvage my data, but would like to find my messages stored in my Inbox in Windows Mail. I cannot open the program (Windows Mail) currently, but will be able to open it when my new computer arrives. For now, I'm copying needed files off my hard drive and storing them temporarily on my children's computer. I do not know what folders from Windows Mail, or Windows perhaps, that I need to save in order to hopefully open my saved inbox messages.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install an additional (SATA) hard drive - it appears I need a cable that can connect to the 8 pin power connection on the hard drive and then to the EIDE 15 pin connector on the cable coming from the hard drive in the computer. I can't find a cable that can do this. Do I need to combine two cables (15 to 4 pin, then 4 to 8?)

I have uninstalled google desktop.
The system is totally virus and spyware free, and the anti-virus is not scanning (schedule scan disabled). All Vista updates are installed. Nothing has helped. I've run out of things to disable. I'm running Vista Business SP1, Dual Core 2.2 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM.
I have a ASUS laptop running Vista Home Premium, 64 bit OS. I have several programs that I use but no loner have the insall disks for. Should I have to reformat in the future I would hate to lose them. Here's what I'm thinking: Buy a extrenal hard drive. Seagate, 1Tbit, usb, cost $90.00. Copy my hard drive to it. If I need to reformat. Reinstall Vista from my recover disk that came with the computer. Then copy files from external drive. Bingo. All my old programs would be there and working. Question is: Can this be done?
What file/folders do I need to copy to the external drive?
Is it possible to copy my entire hard drive onto an external hard drive. Vista Premium, all the data, etc. and what would be a good software to accomplish this?

At this stage it seems that Vista has conned me into destroying a perfectly good WD harddrive!I have created a second partion on the hard drive and I am reformatting that, as I write this, but the only formatting option seems to be this NTFS, and that is what I had already formatted the ExtHD to so I think this formatting will be to no avail!From what I can figure I need to format into FAT but I tried a quick format an ex-fat option was there, but the problem was the same. I am becoming more frustrated with Vista, seems I just keep running into things that should be simple and aren't!

View 6 Replies View Relatedi bought a kit for an old hard drive. i got it to work once ealier today, and now it doesn't work. when i plug it into the usb, it will not successfully install. the kit is a rocketfish hd 35, the hard drive is seagate u8 model st313021a. the "remove hardware" icon appears in the tray, but no designated lettered drive appears on the computer.
the hard drive was part of an older tower that i couldn't get to boot. it's strange because just today i accessed the hard drive and located old pictures, music and other files that i hadn't seen in a few years. had i known this would have happened i would have started saving right away. i thought i had it working.

The previous 250GB drive was left in for additional storage. Just recently (while upgrading my BIOS) I realised that my system was still booting from the 250GB drive even though Windows was on the other disk. There is a fair possibility in the not too distant future that I'll replace the 250GB disk with a larger disk, in which case I won't be able to boot. Is there a safe and reliable way to change it so that the system boots from the 500GB disk?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was starting my computer today (that has Vista), and during the start up process, a black screen came up stating that there was an error opening up my external hard drive and it was checking for errors. After it finally booted up, I went to open the hard drive files, and it was totally BLANK! I then restarted the computer, and still the hard drive is EMPTY! I had ALL my important files in there!
The ONLY thing that looks promising is that when I go to Start then to Computer, it shows the hard drive there, and it still shows that 43GB are free of 111GB of storage (same info shows by right clicking on it and going to Properties). Why would it show this if nothing is on the hard drive anymore? Is there ANYWAY to recover these files again you think???? I NEED those files!!!! Remember that the hard drive STILL PHYSICALLY WORKS. It's just that I cannot access the files on my pc at the time for some reason.......
I just bought and installed a external hard drive. I am fairly knowlegable about computers but this is my first Ex. Hard drive and know very little about there use. So what I want to know is how to save my Family Tree Makers files to it. And once I do that how do I know for sure it is opening from my new drive and not my computer C: drive? View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed an audio card (Sound Blaster X-Fi model SB046APCS) and I can't hear any sound comming out of my PC (I build it myself). The sound tests tell me everyting is working OK and that there are no confilcts with the card. Yesterday I downloaded the Vista audio driver SBXF_PCDVT_LB_2_15_0004.exe from Creative and still no sound. When performing the diagnostics, I can see a green color going up and down in the sound bar but thats all.
I have an Intel DX38BT motherboard, do I have to disable whatvever options there are for audio in the BIOS or the motherboard disables it when it detects an audio card installed? The sound card is recognized by the hardware manager. The dvd burners installed are the Plextor 810SA (sata) and the Memorex dvd burner(model 32023220). I have placed the music cd in both, with the same result, no sound can be heard. The speakers I am using are the JBL Creature (which works OK on my other pc).

I have a NVIDIA GeForce 8400 M GS video card installed. When I went to put on a screensaver and use the photo option, it said "this computer's video card cannot play themes." However, I have been trying to do the same on Vista, it seems that I cannot do the same as XP. For instance, I plug in my USB on Vista and it appears as H drive on Vista, when I am ready to do "safely remove hardware", I don't see the device drive H is on the "Safely remove hardware" window, so I cannot stop the H drive. I am concerned about the Vista hardware.

When I go to 'My computer' the drive is there, as soon as I enter a game or a cd of any kind into the drive there is no auto play and the disc drive disappears completely from 'My Computer' I went to device manager and it is there, said its working properly. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have 3 Different Windows operating systems on one computer that are across 2 separate hard drives. My PROBLEM:
I need guidance as to how to find which drive contains the boot info as well as how to change AND move the Master Boot Record.
Tools currently at my disposal:
1) 2 blank 640gig HD's that I can install if anything needs to be shuffled around.
2) Acronis True Image 2009 that can add or clone disk as well as pretty flexible backup options.
3) System Mechanic 8 which I believe can boot from CD and be used to configure HD's
4) Nero 8 if I need to burn any .ISO boot disks.
5) I only have the Vista 64 bit disk available - the other disks were puppy food.
I had gotten my new graphics card in the mail today and I was eager to install my new GTX 260 into my computer It is a very big card indeed well I got everything in order and I did not even go near my CD drive at all, But when I was finished I went to plug it back in it started up everything was fine, Now the automatic updates kicked in and I restarted my pc then I had my installation disk in the cd drive and nothing happened so I took it out and put in another disk and it was flashing green but then it stopped nothing is happening I went to my computer and it is not displayed there anymore, My friend said it had to do with some Bios default lockout for how many devices can be installed
View 8 Replies View RelatedOn first start up the comp couldnt find my dvd drive. Then after a few restarts it magicly found it. So Vista boots from disk, does all it should, then says to complete it needs to restart. there is only one restart in this whole precess. The drive im installing to have been formated, so its clean. So it restarts and pops up the screen to start the vista install all over again. Its not telling me to remove the disk while it does this, removed the disk when it restarted and all it said was boot error insert disk and press enter, or something to that effect. Now im noticeing after the many times its done this it takes a retarded amount of time to boot up and list my hard drives.
