I want to install backup and hard disc recovery software on my laptop and two PCs.I am impressed with Acronis True Image Home 2009 but this requires a seperate license for each machine. However, Active@Disk Image allows installation on 3 machines and is cheaper. The OP on the laptop is Vista Home Premium, and on the PCs XP Home SP3.What do people think of either choice?

I'm trying to install an additional (SATA) hard drive - it appears I need a cable that can connect to the 8 pin power connection on the hard drive and then to the EIDE 15 pin connector on the cable coming from the hard drive in the computer. I can't find a cable that can do this. Do I need to combine two cables (15 to 4 pin, then 4 to 8?)

I have an external hard drive, I reformated it so I could use Vista's backup. Now it seems that when my brother inlaw tries to put some music files(Itunes) that the hard disc is unavailable to his computer. At this stage it seems that Vista has conned me into destroying a perfectly good WD harddrive!I have created a second partion on the hard drive and I am reformatting that, as I write this, but the only formatting option seems to be this NTFS, and that is what I had already formatted the ExtHD to so I think this formatting will be to no avail! From what I can figure I need to format into FAT but I tried a quick format an ex-fat option was there, but the problem was the same. I am becoming more frustrated with Vista, seems I just keep running into things that should be simple and aren't!

I'm working on a Gateway LX 6810-01 and he completley reformatted his hard drive. He ordered some factory discs to restore to factory settings but when it loads it up it just hangs.
I made a vista 64 recovery disc and it loads up.. When it does it asks for the Dvd/cd Rom driver.
The device is a HL - DT - ST DVDRAM GH15F SCSI Cdrom Device
It lets me serach for it and flash drive is an option and I have one handy, however I can't just find the driver I need and put it on this flash drive for the computer I'm working on.

I have Vista Home Premium running on a PC with a 40GB C drive primary hard disc. My programs are on this C drive, all my docs etc are stored on either of separate D drive and H drives. My primary drive is running at about 30GB used/10GB free space. I continually clean out my C drive of temp files etc, clear my cache but how much space would I re-gain by using the Compress Drive tool (visible when I look at C drive properties)?

I've done a search and can't find a possible solution, so I'm reaching out to the group. I am trying to upgrade from XP Prof x32 toVista Ultimate x64. Disc is full OEM (from NewEgg), and I was hoping to do an in-place upgrade, but just figured out that, that ain't happening,so I need to do a clean install. So, changed boot order in bios and
tried to boot from DVD. Screen comes up asking to press any key to boot from DVD, so I press it, and nothing happens, it just proceeds to hard-drive and boots up in XP.

I was given a HP Compaq 6820s by a good friend with a bad hard drive. He had not made recovery discs, and HP can't supply them. I can replace the hard drive no problem, but don't want to fork over the $$$ for a new Vista OS. I have XP pro, but there seems to be too many issues with downgrading. I have the COA on the bottom of the computer. Since the OS was definitely paid for with the original purchase, can I get an OS from MS for this computer?

I have a ThinkCentre PC with Windows XP Home installed on on it. I've got another machine that is currently running Vista. If I make a install cd from the XP machine, can I install it on my other Compaq machine that is running vista (it came with XP Media Center Edition 2005 but it had all this crap preloaded onto it). Or, can I reformat the XP Media Center Edition PC, and then make an install dvd out of that (i.e. will it remove the crap that Compaq put on it?).

Can upload an ISO image of a Full Vista Install Disc (not upgrade, not recovery only)? I have a product key, so it wouldn't be illegal. Please, as I don't have any recovery discs and HP is making me pay for it.

I'm wondering if there is a simple way to take your Vista Installation Disc and use it to create a custom installation disc that also includes updated drivers and updated hotfixes. The goal would be that during a clean install, those updated drivers and Windows Updates are installed automatically.
For a specific example, I use a USB Wireless Adapter. If I could create a custom windows disc that includes those drivers, then I my USB Wireless Adapter would be recognized and I could therefore allow Windows to connect to the Internet during Setup to see if there are any hotfixes and updates.

I thought I saw a post from someone who was having this same issue but couldn't find it. I am trying to check an ext hard drive for errors and when I try to "safely remove it" and keep getting the message that it is still in use when there is nothing using it, the light is steady. This happens for both my drives often. What gives?

I am trying to do a clean install on a newly built system but Vista can not see my SATA hard drive. I have a Seagate 7200 barracuda 320 GB SATA HD and a Giga-byte P35 Mobo. Not knowing if it was a Vista issue or a hardware issue, I put in a XP installation disk and XP could recognize the drive. I stopped the install and tried loading some drivers off of the disk from Gigabyte. Vista still can not see the hard drive, but now when I throw the XP install disk back in, it can not see the hard drive either.

My laptop motherboard fried, so I removed the hard drive and purchased a caddy. When I plug the hard drive in to my new desktop PC I am able to see that only 4GB of the 100 GB capacity is available (as should be the case). However, I cannot see any of my files on there (folders I had created on the desktop etc.).
The only folders I can see are PerfLogs, Program Files, SwSetup, Users, Windows and two of my personal folders (both containing some photos). I really need to find the rest of my files as I have 12GBs of photos and videos of my baby boy on there, and would be gutted if I cannot access them again (for obvious reasons). Nothing else is important.

My computer crashed and I currently have my hard drive set up externally to copy the information off of it onto another computer. I was using Windows Mail that came with Vista on my old computer when it crashed. I've been able to salvage my data, but would like to find my messages stored in my Inbox in Windows Mail. I cannot open the program (Windows Mail) currently, but will be able to open it when my new computer arrives. For now, I'm copying needed files off my hard drive and storing them temporarily on my children's computer. I do not know what folders from Windows Mail, or Windows perhaps, that I need to save in order to hopefully open my saved inbox messages.

Every time I open Microsoft Mail I get the message below. If I answer Yes, the mail service works fine, but just for the rest of that particular session. The same thing happens on my wife's computer and on my Mom's. This is a genuine nuisance! I did a search in this newsgroup and found someone that was using Gmail and had the same problem
I suspect that the message refers to the e-mail server which in my case is sbcglobal, which in turn is a a service of Yahoo. Since Microsoft Mail obviously knows what the offending certificate is I assume that it has been logged onto my computer somewhere. Ques. 1, can anyone tell me how to find it (I am running Vista Business), and Ques. 2, can you tell me how to force Microsoft Mail to "accept" it as a valid certificate?
Offending Message: The server you are connected to is using a secure certificate that could not be verified. The certificate CN name does not match the passed value. Do you want to continue using this server? Yes No

Running Vista Home Prem32Bit....will Upgrade to Windows7 32BIT. Ran Microsoft's Windows 7 Advisor....the Report shows under the PROGRAM section, Cisco PEAP MODULE 1.0.13 is not compatible. It shows update is available and when you click on it you go to a Cisco Site....but I couldn't find the download, for that matter, any downloads. I have tried to get help from CISCO, it is impossible. All I wanted was the link to download the Update and all they wanted was a contract number. I don't even know what this program does...it may be the wireless Password Security? It should not be this difficult, I need to update PEAP and I have spent many hours at the Cisco site and Internet searches and have been unable to find the download that will update Cisco PEAP Module to a version that is Compatible with Windows 7. Hopefully someone else has been sucessful and has located the site where I can download and install the Update.........

My daughter bought a computer several years ago made by HP that runs Vista Home edition 32 bit we upgraded the video card and power supply when she bought it. Went with NVidia GeForce 3500 at the time pretty decent card we thought. Well now shes had some issues that forced her to restore the system and we couldnt find the install info for the card. Went to NVidia's website and downloaded drivers now the computer wont boot up. We keep getting a blue screen that says windows encountered a problem. I cant remember if the system came with a card that wasnt cutting it or if there was integrated graphics on the motherboard. So when we experienced the problem booting after installing drivers for the card I went into setup and changed the video to onboard graphics now we get nothing at bootup and monitor keeps going to sleep.

I have -Dell XPS 730x with 6 GIG DDR3 RAM, Intel i7 64 bit Processor, 500 GIG disk,
I am running -Windows Vista Home Premium 64 which was preinstalled on the cpu
I want to -Dual boot between Vista64 and Windows XP32
So far -I have done everything to this machine from creating a virtual window in Vista64, to going into the command prompt from vista boot disk and running diskpart to clear hard drive.
I currently have -Two partitions on one disk. Primary 200GIG and Healthy 265GIG -Windows Vista Home Premium64 installed and running
The problems im having -every time try to boot from CD and run the windows xp setup, it is UNABLE to find ANY HARD DRIVES!
I have researched that
- I must have the disk partitioned
- Windows XP must be installed first
- I have to play with the boot.ini
- If i install vista32 it will be more successful
The errors I have gotten -STOP: 0x0000008E - i researched this and it said one option is to take out the excess RAM
I will be happy if - By the end of this weekend I can successfully run XP or both OS's in dual boot.
I need to go through all this trouble because - Digidesign has not written software for 64 bit proccessing yet. I need to make music.
