After changing the bios settings for the pci-e freq and (dumb) the cpu voltage to 1.0 it doesnt do anything after saving and restarting .. it just powers on and nothing boots up, nothing onscreen at all (i made sure the monitor is hooked up right too) i didnt do anything other than the bios changes from when just before it worked fine. I changed those things to try and fix the stutter from the sound card. I made and tested a caldera dos boot CD disk with the asus flash utility but it wont boot it up. just runs with nothing happening.

I've had this problem for 3 days now and googled all I can! I have come across people who have also had the same problem but found no conclusion to it! I have a Asrock MOBO, amd quadcore processor, 6gig ram....Basically when installing vista x64 it does everything perfect untill it gets too expanding files and it just stays there at 0%, first time I tryed it, it got to 22% and just stayed there... My HDD is IDE not SATA/SATAll does that make any difference? Or am I on the wrong tracks? I thought maybe my HDD wasnt set up right in the BIOs and tryed every setting and have the same effect.. I've build the PC myself

I recently had a problem with my Dell Inspiron 1525 (System Event Notification Service error) and I had to use the function to return the system to its factory settings. I believe this involves using an OS image that's installed on a separate partition on the laptops hard drive. I followed the steps in the manual which involves using the F8 setup screen and selecting "repair your computer" and "system recovery options" and selecting restore factory settings or something to that effect. I selected this and after about 10 minutes a message appeared stating that the return to factory settings was successful. Per the instructions, I hit enter but after I did the computer went into a continuous loop of showing the bios screen and what sounded like trying to boot up and then back to the bios screen. It would continue doing this unless I hit the power button or pressed the F2 key or the F12 key. I hit F2 and noticed that the boot sequence had been changed to diskette drive as first and hard drive as second....
I guess I have the other option of reinstalling the operating system from the OS disk Dell provided but I'm wondering if that is the same as the restore to factory settings option? For example, are all the necessary drivers and other applications that were on the machine when it left the factory copied during installation? The manual says the OS image file on the hard drive has all the drivers and applications so I'd really like to go that route if I can but I do need some advice on how to fix this problem with the Bios looping.

I increased the RAM on my Compaq Presario SR2002X from 512M to 2G (both old and new are the same speed, PC2-4200). Both the BIOS Setup and the System dialog in the Control Panel show that they are using the new memory. As expected, a variety of things run faster now. In particular, all those security dialogs that come up and dim the desktop whenever you start some system maintenance process. They used to be slow to appear, but now they pop up almost immediately. Some programs start faster now -- the MSDN library displays almost immediately now, and it used to take about 30 seconds to initialize.
The surprise is that some things run slower. One thing that is particularly noticeable often occurs when entering text into a web page input area. With each keystroke, I can see the caret moving across the white background, but no characters appear. Sometimes I'll type in five or six keystrokes before it gets around to painting the characters behind the cursor. Another occurs with crossword puzzles displayed in Flash objects, such as the one in the daily L.A. Times. For these crossword puzzles, first you have to poke a puzzle-selection button; then it pops up a dialog with a choice of "regular" or "master" skill level. The pop-up used to display instantly; now there's a delay of about three seconds. Why would some things run slower after an increase in RAM??

My OS is Vista Home Premium 32 bits. My cd/dvd drive is HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM LG GSA-H55N SCSI. I have one strange problem with my cd/dvd drive since a couple of days.
---My cd/dvd drive doesn't recognize Maxell CD-R discs and certain movie dvds and doesn't read any music cds (manufacturized albums). When I insert the disk, there's this message ''Insert the disk on Drive E:''. But it doesn't have any problems with other CD-R and DVD-R like Memorex and Sony. Last week, October 26, I played a DVD movies (like Broadway melody) without any problems. I tried to play it again today it gives me the ''insert the disc message''. Is it due to some Windows update? or anything?

I have upgraded from Windows XP Service Pack 3 to Vista on a Toshiba Qosmio G35-AVA600 which has two 80GB SATA hard drives. In Windows XP the drive was seen as one 180GB hard drive. No problem. After I installed Vista the second drive is not showing and I can't format it from disk management services because it is not shown.
The wierd thing is that I am not missing any files, but perhaps I had not used any space on the second hard drive, therefore I wouldn't be missing any files. Also, after installing Vista I checked the BIOS and it does not see my second hard drive (it lists second hard drive and says "None"), nor does My Computer but it is there as I have made no hardware changes. All I did was upgrade from Windows XP Service Pack 3 to installing Windows Vista. I have the latest RAID drivers from Toshiba which was updated after I installed Vista. The latest BIOS was installed from Toshiba website BEFORE I upgraded and it WAS listed in the BIOS. I've read the many threads on second ATA hard drives but no one mentions that their BIOS does not recognize the drive as well as Vista.

Ok this is really starting to irritate me i am beginning to remeber why i always use ASUS boards! Anyway i am up and running but on a crappy 20G Maxtor b/c my BIOS won't recognize the SATA drive. I have the SATA controller enabled and i have tried all 4 connectors with no luck. Updated BIOS still no luck. Windows won't see it either. Tried installing the Nvidia drivers of the support disk did not think that work an well it didn't. Actually i'm sure it's the stupid Nvidia chipset but i updated it and still no SATA action.I have never seen a modern board that did not recognize SATA drives automatically i have tried 2 different drives a working Samsung and the new EXCELSTORE/Hitachi and in tandem as well.On a lighter note i already have her OC'ed at 2.5Mhz on a whole 512 MB of RAM........One of my sticks was DOA teach me not to buy RAM i am not familiar with.AMD Opteron 1212 Dual core/ASRock ALiveNF6G with a Nvidia 6100/nForce430 chipset.

Anyone had any experience bypassing BitLocker (basic mode) using the recovery console (i.e., booting to the Windows DVD or rescue CD)? Based on the documentation, seems like it would work (provided BIOS is configured to boot to CD/DVD drive before the HDD). Having said that, would M$ allow such an obvious attack vector? I don't have a machine w/ a TPM right now, so I can't test this myself.

I would like to setup a VPN so that i can share my home videos and pictures with my family across the state. I would like to be able to setup a network drive so that vista media center can monitor it. This way we could turn on vista and browse to the vids or pics and see what is new. This would save a lot of hassle of emailing them all the time. We all have the same dynamic isp, routers and Vista proff or ultimate. So i'm thinking that if i can get 2 computers to work like i want over a VPN then i'll have no problem with the rest of the families computers. I have used Cisco to successfully setup a vpn across country using one computer with vista and the other with xp. Is vista's vpn setup similar to cisco's? Is Vista capable of creating what i described above?

I am having trouble getting Vista to recognize the IDE hard drive I am trying to add. I have Vista Home Basic running off of my SATA HD and want to add IDE as extra storage. I have it all hooked up, IDE hard drive is set to master on same controller as my DVD drive, but windows isn't recognizing the HD properly, it recognizes it as a new drive, but it is coming up as a floppy drive, anyone have any idea how to remedy this? Will be watching thread for next 20 mins or so, will keep up on replies and supply additional info if needed.

I am making the upgrade to a RAID1 setup for my multimedia collections. I am using a 250GB boot disk where I have 3 versions of windows installed: XP, Vista, and 7RC. So, this setup is not intended for booting purposes and is intended to be used by my different OSs.
I bought two identical 1T Maxtor HDs and a Sabrent SATA II 3Gbps 4Ports PCI ExpressRAID Card. All items have been installed into my computer. The card's BIOS recognizes the HDs and I formatted and paired the drives there for RAID1. Windows has installed updated drivers for my Sabrent controller.
For some reason I cannot see the drive on my system. I've searched all over for any incite to setting this up without reinstalling windows. Is this at all possible? Is there a program that I can download to setup the array that's similar to Intel's Matrix Storage Manager? Again this is not my primary boot drive.

I've noticed some files on my hard drive and the Windows folder is reported as being created in 2006.Since 2006 I have formatted my hard drive 3 times using the Vista setup.I know for a fact that the last time I formatted and reinstalled was January 2009. Can someone explain why these files and the Windows folder shows an earlier date?? When selecting the Format command during setup does Windows actually remove everything form the hard drive? I have noticed that the format doesn't take very long, at least not half as long as it used to with earlier versions of Windows. If Windows doesn't actually remove everything form one's hard drive

Info from biosagent

BIOS Date: August 18th 2006
BIOS ID: 08/18/2006-C51PVGM-GB-6A61HE1BC-00-None

I have attempted all the following to install. I corresponded with digital river who forwarded me three files for the Vista upgrade. After downloading via FireFox I begin the installation. Once the installation begins I get the following error message: "Cannot extract Windows Vista Setup to your hard drive. Please ensure that you can create files and folders in the same folder where VistaSetupPrep.exe was downloaded." Now, I have troubleshooted this way:
I have unprotected the folder that contains all the files and unclicked the Read Only option. I have attempted to copy and paste the install.wim and the boot.wim files into the source folder that is created after I have begun the install, as someone in the Microsoft Answers Forum suggested. I also tried to burn it to a DVD, which gave me another error message.
This is extremely frustrating as I purchased this OS on discount thinking it is an affordable alternative. I can also see that I am not the only one with this issue. So it would be nice if someone from Microsoft found a solution to this issue. I currently have Windows XP Media Center Edition SP 3.

I've been messing around in my BIOS. Installing some faster RAM and trying a slight overclock (2.4 t0 2.7Ghz on a Q6600) and seem to have caused myself several problems. Firstly I tried to push it a bit further on the FSB- from 1200 to 1300-the system wouldn't boot and wouldn't let me into the BIOS. I eventually got round this by removing the mobo battery. I was able to get back into the BIOS and revert to my original oc. However when I booted I got a re register Windows this is not a genuine version notice. I had to 'phone microsoft and get a new activation ID. I'm now back in windows (Vista HP 64 bit) but seem to have a few left over issues. My clock was set back to 2006 and that meant I couldn't activate Gmail etc. I went back into the BIOS and reset the date but could not change the day. So it's 3.19PM on Monday the 22nd of September, 2008. I've tried everything I can think of but cannot find a way to make it Friday, which it is.
Also I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. This keeps reporting that my computer is at risk and I need to update. I've updated over a dozen times but it doesn't seem to change and is still telling me it needs to update. These are ther first problems I have noticed. I hope I don't find more. Does anyone have any advice as to how to get my day and date correct and how to convince Kaspersky it's up to date?

All had been working well until a few days ago. For some reason, now when I double-click a video file, I can hear the audio but I get no video. I must open WMP manually, and then I get the video of what I'm hearing. I used to double-click a video and it automatically opened WMP.
Then, to close WMP, I must stop the video first. Because if I don't, the audio will continue even though the video will not be seen. I then have to re-open the player, stop the video, then close WMP. I used to close the program (X on the WMP) and it would all (video and audio) close,

This also happened when my friend downloaded some warez stuff and he had the same problem. Though i tryied to stop him opening it with daemon tools due to virus risk, he did it and it had only some KB of file size.

Brings up the next line awaiting another command as if it finished.
I've tried Doing a System Restore But it cant since the files are apparently corrupted and check disk cant fix them because it doesnt get far enough to find them in the first place. Just wondering if anyone here could give me a tip on what to do. I would reinstall it but my computer didn't come with a vista disk.

Last week I bought a new Acer Aspire 6350 w/ Vista - My 1st Vista machine. After uninstalling all the Acer bloatware, I open the GUI defragger, it analyzes C: for 2 secs (doesn't even mention analyzing the other 2 partitions) then it says "your file system performance can be improved". I defrag it the C:, it takes 45 mins or so and done. I go to my wife's Dell Vista laptop and go to the GUI defragger. It analyzes all 3 of her partitions. Weird, mine only analyzed C: for 2 secs. I then go back to my new Acer and run the GUI degragmenter again. After a 2 sec C: analysis it says "your file system......." again. Then when I go the command line defrag, run "defrag c: -a" it says I don't need to defrag. Bottom line is the GUI defragmenter doesn't work on this new laptop. It doesn't scan all partitions, when started it runs for a bit, then it just stops and it goes back to saying " your file system performance can be improved".
