Updates And 'hung / Froze', Displays The BIOS Screen?

Oct 16, 2009

A friend has an Acer Desktop with Vista. It was installing the latest Windows updates, and 'hung / froze' ( her words ) Now, when it starts, it displays the BIOS screen? Obviously some sort of major problem? I was going to try the Recovery Console first?

Download Failed: Hung Up Windows Updates

Sep 10, 2008

When I try to perform a wndows update, my 9 month old HP notebook keeps getting hung up or says the download failed. It just says it's downloading the updates but continually says 0 KB total and 0% complete, that goes unchanged for HOURS! I eventually have to stop the download but have several important updates that are waiting to be installed. I dont know what to do. HP says I must remove all saved document and file data and reinstall the whole operating system.

Updates To Install: Desktop Started To Load And Froze There

Dec 28, 2008

About six weeks ago I had an issue with my computer that seems to be related to an update downloaded at that time. I had Automatic Update set to download and install updates automatically and after one such update, the computer instructed me to restart which I did. All went well until I logged in. The log in screen came up, I logged in and hit enter and the desktop started to load...and froze there. I restarted in safe mode and system restore failed. I called Dell and they walked me through diagnostics until they were fairly sure that it was not a hardware problem. I finally got it to reboot from the Windows disk that came with the computer, but the problem persisted. No error message, no lights, no beeps. Just frozen at the same place at the same time. In addition, each time I had to hold the power button down to reboot, my RAID array would have to 're-verify' the data on both disks which would take about 4 hours before I could even think of doing anything with the box.

Finally Dell had me restore the system from a partition on my hard drive which reset the computer to how it was from the factory... It worked fine till I downloaded the updates again. The last bunch included a Vista security update and a bunch of Office updates. I had to Factory Image reinstall again. I have now shut off my Auto Update. It tells me that there are updates to download, but I have not done any of them in the last month........

Motherboard: Get Welcome Screen And Froze

Jul 17, 2008

First switch on, got to Welcome screen and froze, restarted now all it does is Start Case fan and CPU fan after 2-3 seconds, runs for 10 seconds and switches off, then restarts and keeps going through same procedure, over and over. On motherboard is a row of 6 LED's showing CPU loading, all six lit each time it starts? I've a horrible feeling the CPU is kaput.

HP Pavillion Dv 900 Screen Froze Hard Shut Down

Apr 3, 2009

My step father has a Window Vista Home Premium 32Bit on a HP Pavillion DV 9000 Laptop His screen had froze so he did a hard shut down on it and when he tried to load it back up it would go through the green bar for about 5 to ten minutes then it would freeze at a black screen and the way i know its frozen is that the little light that tells you the computer is thinking is permanently on. HP did not send us any disks with this laptop so recovery through disk isnt possible,

I downloaded an ISO image of a WinRE about a month ago when we had problems with a virus and i had to do a system restore and i tried to boot from disk with that and it did the same thing as when booting normally. Is it possible there is a file in the System32 file that got corrupted or deleted and if so is there a way of finding out which file and is it fixable if i can access the hard drive and hook it up to a working computer? I have a case that can make a laptop hard drive into an external one to access from a desktop.

Service Pack: At The End Of The Process The Screen Froze On A Line Showing This Series

Mar 30, 2008

Windows Update downloaded Vista sp1 and appeared to be installing it successfully. However at the end of the process the screen froze on a line showing this series of numbers: !! OXC190036 !! 4089/66075 (RESCINST.DLL)

I had to cut the power to turn the computer off and have been unable to boot up. Every attempt to boot fails and ends with the same line.

Black Screen Right After Bios.

Jun 18, 2008

I have Vista Ulimate 64-bit and everytime that I reboot I get a black screen before the Microsoft Windows scrolling bar.

This is the sequence.
- I reboot.
- I get my bios information screen.
- I get the white, blinking line in the upper left corner of the screen.
- Then the screen goes black with no hard drive activity.

I then can perform a Complete PC restore from my second partition on the same SATA Hard Drive and I will then be able to boot into Vista with no problem.....until I reboot, then I get the Black screen again. It is a vicious cycle.

I have tried to remove video cards (2 x 8800 GTS), memory (4 GB), sound cards (X-Fi Music), load the default bios settings....nothing works. Only a Complete PC Restore cures it, but only until I need to reboot the PC.

After Bios Get Blue Screen

Nov 25, 2008

i run Vista home x64, and when the updates download and install everything works until the restart. After the bios and windows screen i get a blue screen telling me that windows is unable to restart and to either restart the computer or contact the administrator. So i restart and i get the option to start windows normally or run the repair, if i select normal i get the same blue screen, so i run the repair and it does the system restore which only partially works. i have to run another restore with a point that i have selected for everything back to normal. i have disabled the auto updates and have been hiding new ones because i'm sick of sitting through two restores.

I can hear my laptop fan running, and every 20 seconds or so the computer powers off then reboots immediately, but nothing on the screen.

Upgraded Vista 32bit Hung Up

Jan 13, 2009

I'm currently running my upgraded rig on Vista Ultimate 32 bit and would like to have 64 bit installed because I have 6 gigs of ram that I would like to be able to use. My problem is that when I boot from my DVD drive, it says it loads the windows files, but then when its like setting up the install or something (The green bar is scrolling across the screen), it gets hung up then, after a minute or two, becomes a BSOD. 32 bit did something similar, but never gave me blue screen just kept stopping and starting again. I'm stumped.

Security Service Hung On Starting

Mar 23, 2008

From day 1, the PC hangs on start after the normal desktop appears for about 10 minutes. After that time it works fine. Each time I notice the following entries in the event log: The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service hung on starting. The Security Center service hung on starting. The Windows Update service hung on starting. Not sure if these are related. The machine is actually exhibiting symptoms of a 100% CPU utilisation as I noticed that it responds to mouse clicks after a considerable delay. After it's had its spat for 10 or so minutes it works fine. I am also running the Bit Defender Internet Security. Again, not sure if that is the contributing factor.

Updates Do Not Let Me Get To The Login Screen

Jun 13, 2008

I am having a nightmare with my laptop which has windows vista ultimate on it. I chose to shut down the laptop by choosing the option "Shut down after installing updates", and so it started to shut down. However, after a couple of hours I checked and saw the laptop was still on, and it was stuck on Update 3 / 3. The status screen displays the following: Installing Update 3 / 3 - 0%

A couple of moments later, the laptop displays "Shutting down" and just like that it does. Not matter which mode I run the laptop in or how much times I let it "loop-around", it returns to the same screen. The problem is I cannot even get to the login screen, let alone try something to fix the damn system! I am really against a wall here, as I have no idea what to do. Is there a way I can backup information from my hard drive while the laptop is on, but not logged on? - Is there a way I can restore the latop to an earlier state using the restore option without logging on to the system?

Blue Screen & Reboots After Updates

Feb 12, 2010

Windows Vista Home Premium on an Acer 4420 laptop was working fine up until Wednesday morning. I installed about a dozen updates and ever since then I've had the computer crash randomly but regularly when I have IE8 open. I get a fairly quick blue screen message and then the system reboots without anyone telling it to. If I simply have the computer running but do not have IE8 running it seems to stay stable. I've uninstalled all the updates but it hasn't made any difference--still crashing!

Blue Screen After Microsoft Auto Updates

Sep 3, 2009

I let Vista do two updates on my Tosh A300-1BZ Laptop - I think 1 was an IE8
compatibility update, the second a windows defender patch and the third (enabled in error) was a "windows live essentials" update which I cancelled half way through (by hitting Cancel and then Yes etc).

The updater reported two updated done one cancelled and requested a reboot.

After re-boot all I get after the initial Microsoft "bar graph" loading icon is a blue screen and "STOP: c0000139 (Entry Point Not Found) The procedure entry point ntoskrnl.Ex1AcquireFastMutex could not be located in the dynamic link library HAL.dll."

I've tried using repair windows using F8 and from a Vista Ultimate DVD (which reports no errors) and using system restore to a previous point which reports success but on re-boot the laptop still blue screens with the same report.

Configuring Updates, Recieved Black Screen

May 22, 2008

I just recently purchased a new game, and it said it would help the game's performance to install Vista Service Pack 1. While doing this, at the end of configuring updates, I recieved a black screen and "0xc0190036" with some message like keyboard. after it. It never changed from this screen. From different websites online, I read my best bet is to reinstall Vista. I have an Acer computer, and I am not positive that I recieved a back-up CD with my purchase. If I did, it must be lost, as my house is organized like an OCD freak would do. I was able to find XP OS disk, and quickly put that in, only to soon realize this was a Dell OS. This basically was a whole bunch of fail, and now it seems my only option is to boot "CD-ROM" with the Vista CD which I do not have in there...

Black Screen Of Death: (no Updates Or Installations)

Sep 23, 2009

So I've read so many pages all around the web about this problem, with no explainable reason (no updates or installations) I booted up yesterday to find that after login my desktop was black with only my cursor visible. I wait some 5 or 6 minutes and the desktop appears but explorer.exe is slower than slow and takes the same amount of time to action any click. Painstakingly, I went through msconfig and disabled everything, one by one I re-enabled each item, rebooted and tested the results. Rinse and repeat for every process. All worked fine until I came across 'Shell Hardware Detect'. If this process is enabled then I get the error described above.

So a cursory search around the web doesn't seem to yield many resolutions to this problem. I only seem to be able to find similar issues on Win XP SP2 - however i'm running Vista Premium X64 SP2. I'm angling towards SP2 as ever since I installed it I've noticed a few bugs. Typically, searching on Microsoft's support website the term Shell Hardware Detection yields nothing whatsoever. Anyone have any ideas how I can get this process functioning properly again?
