HP Pavillion Dv 900 Screen Froze Hard Shut Down
Apr 3, 2009
My step father has a Window Vista Home Premium 32Bit on a HP Pavillion DV 9000 Laptop His screen had froze so he did a hard shut down on it and when he tried to load it back up it would go through the green bar for about 5 to ten minutes then it would freeze at a black screen and the way i know its frozen is that the little light that tells you the computer is thinking is permanently on. HP did not send us any disks with this laptop so recovery through disk isnt possible,
I downloaded an ISO image of a WinRE about a month ago when we had problems with a virus and i had to do a system restore and i tried to boot from disk with that and it did the same thing as when booting normally. Is it possible there is a file in the System32 file that got corrupted or deleted and if so is there a way of finding out which file and is it fixable if i can access the hard drive and hook it up to a working computer? I have a case that can make a laptop hard drive into an external one to access from a desktop.

First switch on, got to Welcome screen and froze, restarted now all it does is Start Case fan and CPU fan after 2-3 seconds, runs for 10 seconds and switches off, then restarts and keeps going through same procedure, over and over. On motherboard is a row of 6 LED's showing CPU loading, all six lit each time it starts? I've a horrible feeling the CPU is kaput.

A friend has an Acer Desktop with Vista. It was installing the latest Windows updates, and 'hung / froze' ( her words ) Now, when it starts, it displays the BIOS screen? Obviously some sort of major problem? I was going to try the Recovery Console first?

Windows Update downloaded Vista sp1 and appeared to be installing it successfully. However at the end of the process the screen froze on a line showing this series of numbers: !! OXC190036 !! 4089/66075 (RESCINST.DLL)
I had to cut the power to turn the computer off and have been unable to boot up. Every attempt to boot fails and ends with the same line.

If I leave my computer sit overnight, it will completely freeze, and I have to hard-shut it down. The only program that was running was Firefox (with a few pages open). What would cause this?
Overheating?
Memory issues?
GPU issues?
I have had freezing before while browsing on the internet, but it has happened only once, and I had tons of Firefox windows open. It will, however, freeze almost every time I play Company of Heroes Gold, and sometimes freezes when I play FarCry2. In addition, I can benchmark it over and over, but if I let it sit for an hour AFTER I benchmark it, the system will freeze. I have all updates...64 bit drivers, BIOS, etc... These issues aside, why would it freeze when sitting idle overnight? My system specs are pretty good...if I was overheating I would be shocked

One of my computers is a Gateway desktop, that came with Vista Home Premium. This computer has been giving me problems ever since I got it last May. It has been giving me unexpected shut downs without warnings. I have formated the hard drive numerous times, and finally paid Gateway to get the restore disk so that I could do this. Well, the problem kept continuing. I had talked to Gateway numerous times also. Anyway, the last straw was yesterday when I restored again, and this time she did a shut down on me when it was installing the necessary updates.
Now I knew it wasn't a software incapability or something that I loaded that was causing it. So I called Gateway again, and this time I rant and raving about how I was frustrated about this and I wanted to find a way to absolutely clear my hard drive from this corrupted thing or virus, so I could do another clean format. After her research about this................

I have a HP Pavillion a1632x which came with XP, but was advertised to be upgradeable to Vista. Later on, this option was not supported. This falls on false advertising! Doesn't HP have trial drivers? I called HP, but they don't seem to support Vista for this machine. Last week, I was infected by a virus and was unable to recover my XP OS. I received a copy of Vista at a trade show, and decided to install it, as I did not want to shell out $30 for the CDs. Besides, I heard that Vista was far better after Service pack 1. Does anyone know where to get device drivers for the NVidea nForce Network Controller? I tried both the HP & nvidea, but none of those work. Moreover, HP does not talk much about the exact specs on the network controler (which is on board). I guess my time is cheap, so I am willing to spend a couple of hours before breaking down and ordering the XP reinstall cds!

This never happened for a couple of days but as I started updating Vista, the Blue Screen Error has been occurring. the Problems Center in Vista advised me to update to SP1 because it said that this issue has been resolved in the latest service pack. After updating, the problem is still here. When i boot Vista up its normal, and operates perfectly. But when the issue of putting my computer on sleep or shutting down/restarting, the Blue Screen appears and restarts my computer so i
have to resort to turning it off manually.

I reinstalled vista recently and now when i press restart ~ from the start bar ~ the pc will do all the operations needed as in quit applications, shut down windows and then it's just black screen and fans spinning. Someone gave me a solution to this but it wasn't temporary. Everytime i was shutting down the pc, it was doing the same thing when i was restarting. Now it happens the same thing even when i shut it down. So everytime i shut down/restart my pc i have to wait till windows shuts down and then press the button on my case.

Yesterday I believe an update came when I stepped away from my pc for about 45 minutes. I had been able to use the pc up until then when the mouse and key board froze. I attempted to reboot and could not. 95 errors posted in the event log. Most these where WMI (source) and the event ID was 24. I cannot find a solution, and I am not that well knowing a lot. I can probably make the corrections if I have a solution given to me.

new to the forum and dont have much computer experience. But im having this problem for Counter-Strike 1.6. I've downloaded steam and got all the updates. When I try to connect to a server to play, the box would show "Establishing connection to network server.." with 3 bar and froze. The only way out would be Ctrl+Alt+Del and End Task. At first, I thou it was Windows Firewall and the router. After I've disable both, still no luck. A friend is having the same issue and hes also running Vista x64.

About six weeks ago I had an issue with my computer that seems to be related to an update downloaded at that time. I had Automatic Update set to download and install updates automatically and after one such update, the computer instructed me to restart which I did. All went well until I logged in. The log in screen came up, I logged in and hit enter and the desktop started to load...and froze there. I restarted in safe mode and system restore failed. I called Dell and they walked me through diagnostics until they were fairly sure that it was not a hardware problem. I finally got it to reboot from the Windows disk that came with the computer, but the problem persisted. No error message, no lights, no beeps. Just frozen at the same place at the same time. In addition, each time I had to hold the power button down to reboot, my RAID array would have to 're-verify' the data on both disks which would take about 4 hours before I could even think of doing anything with the box.
Finally Dell had me restore the system from a partition on my hard drive which reset the computer to how it was from the factory... It worked fine till I downloaded the updates again. The last bunch included a Vista security update and a bunch of Office updates. I had to Factory Image reinstall again. I have now shut off my Auto Update. It tells me that there are updates to download, but I have not done any of them in the last month........

My vista keeps locking up after various amounts of time, no matter whether its just idling, or im making the computer work hard. As ive read on other topics, I think its a driver issue, but I just dont know what to do. I will try another fresh vista install tomorrow and get the vista updates quickly to see whether that helps the situation. I have ensured it isnt overheating like it did initially when I bought the system, and it is now a safe and low temperature in a running state. Also, it only detects 3.5Gb of the 4Gb of RAM I have in my system. PC Spec:
Ive re-installed, windows, and it froze after I installed the chipset driver. I contiuned, and found a sound driver wasnt digitally signed. However it still crashes. I have got the latest drivers for it. For it to crash, all i did was open recycle bin, from idle state.

I have two computers using Vista SP1 and both get turned off every night. This morning started up the first pc and everything went fine during boot and log-in. Then when I tried to start an application the p.c froze with the round "hour-glass" timer showing. Didin't think much of it. I re-booted and everything was fine. Started up the 2nd p.c. a while later and exactly the same problem, only this time I went for the "start" menu first and not an application. Now I think this is quite odd. The same problem on different p.c.'s on the same day using the same operating system. Re-booted the 2nd p.c. and again everything is okay.

About 40% of the time when I either choose HIBERNATE or the standard SHUT DOWN, the computer just keeps on running. Although it seems WINDOW has shut down, the "ON" light is still on and I can hear the fan running. When this happens I am left with no other option but to use the "emergency shut down" method - pressing the ON button for more than 4 seconds (ASUS laptop, using Vista Home Premium). Presumably this method would damage the computer in some ways in the long run?
I assume WINDOW is shut down because the next time when I turn on the computer it doesn't say the "WINDOW is not properly shut down". So can any kind souls please help me with this annoying problem of turning off the computer completely?

1. I have a 120GB hard disk that shows a capacity of 105GB. No problems there--I understand that there's a restore partition and GB vs a billion bytes
2. My hard disk says that 54GB is being used.
3. However when I drag and select all folders in my C: and click properties, I only see 28GB of usage. This leaves an unaccounted-for 26GB.
I've just run disk cleanup and cleaned up my shadow copies before verifying all this. Besides at a MAXIMUM, system restore should only eat 15% of my hard disk (18GB). What explains this loss? How do I fight back and regain my hard-earned gigabytes?

I have an external hard drive, I reformated it so I could use Vista's backup. Now it seems that when my brother inlaw tries to put some music files(Itunes) that the hard disc is unavailable to his computer. At this stage it seems that Vista has conned me into destroying a perfectly good WD harddrive!I have created a second partion on the hard drive and I am reformatting that, as I write this, but the only formatting option seems to be this NTFS, and that is what I had already formatted the ExtHD to so I think this formatting will be to no avail! From what I can figure I need to format into FAT but I tried a quick format an ex-fat option was there, but the problem was the same. I am becoming more frustrated with Vista, seems I just keep running into things that should be simple and aren't!

Recently after I go through the Shut Down procedures, I have been noting
that after the disappearance of the windows interface, the computer would
still be on and I would have to shut down by pressing the power switch for a
few seconds.
When I do not prerss this switch, windows restarts after about ten minutes;
after I receive a brief report (which I never manage to read in full)
informing me that a software may not have been properly installed or that I
need a windows update.
This problem appeared long after I installed all the software that I use,
and I have checked whether I'm fully updated (I am).
Is there a way in which I can ensure this problem does not occur when I go
through the normal shut down procedures?

I mean, I've seen Windows take a long time to shut down, but mine just won't shut down. I'll go to start, click "Shut Down" and Windows will close everything running like usual and go to that screen where it says "Windows is shutting down." Well, last night, instead of just forcing a power-down, I decided to see if it would shut down or not if left alone for a while, so I left it at that screen, and went to bed. I woke up in the morning and Windows was still at that point, and the circle was still spinning, which means the system hadn't frozen. Also, the num lock button still worked. I'm guessing something has Windows going for a loop when closing down processes.
