Create An Image Of All System (all Matrix RAID 0+1) On External Harddrive

Jun 23, 2008

I've just installed Vista x64 and some applications to work. The the system and the applications are "fresh", proper installed and I would like to create an image of all system (all matrix RAID 0+1) on external harddrive. What software do you suggest for this purpose? Can I do it via ghost.exe from DOS level?

RAID-1 With Different Sized Disks Under , Intel Matrix ICH9R

Jun 10, 2009

I have an ICH9R board and intel matrix storage. I previously had a 1TB drive with 250GB free (not partitioned). I added a second 250GB hard drive. Is it possible to create a raid1 volume (end of 1TB drive+full 250GB drive) without loosing all my data on the other 750GB of the drive? I don't see how to do it in the matrix storage console. I know it's possible to do this with software raid but vista doesn't support software raid-1. If it's not possible, can I backup my data, create a 250GB raid1 array in the BIOS, and create an other 750GB partition during vista setup for less critical files?

How To Create System Builder Image?

Dec 16, 2008

I am interested in creating a system which works like everyday DELL's/HP's/SONY's etc where the HDD has a partition with an activate image of the OS. The boot menu lets you boot from the HDD by default but if the system needs to be cleaned (restored to factory defaults) it is as simple as choosing a option in the boot menu which simply installs the OS (activated i.e. no frequent activations) which still keeping almost every file I created personally.

FYI, I am trying to build my own system using Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit and would like to keep an activated image of my system that can restored anytime I need to start all over again. EDIT: I am only interested in going back to when the image was created. Ocassionally I would like to update the image when major service packs are released and tested

I also do not really care if it is'nt recommended lol. If this is possible would it also be possible to dual-boot with XP? I have both install disks for Vista and XP and I am willing to buy software.

External Raid Drive Via ESATA

Jun 4, 2008

Just bought (should arrive in a day or so) a Lacie 2Big Dual 1T external raid drive (via eSATA). Just a quick thought, As I plan to use it in a Raid 0 set up do I need to make any adjustments to my bios or install the JMicron drivers so Vista can utilise the raid as well as my other three, non raid, sata drives. I've looked at the manual and doeesn't mention any thing about it. Or is it simply plug it in and forget.

Disk Management: Create RAID Mirror

Apr 28, 2008

I have my old XP load on my C drive and Vista on the D drive. I'm ready to wipe out XP (I know lots of folks would go the other way) so I can create a mirror copy of Vista for fault tolerance. Before I enable RAID in the firmware, I'm thinking I need to format the C drive. However the Disk Management utility has the format command grayed out for the C drive. It shows up as:

Disk 0: C: NTFS, Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)

My D drive is: Disk 2: D: NTFS, Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary
Partition)

What is the proper way to wipe out C so I can create my RAID mirror?

External RAID Through Jmicron Expresscard Esata

Oct 19, 2008

I have an Inspiron 1720 (bad choice in retrospect) that I had been running XP Pro on for quite some time and had created an external RAID with an esata port multiplier. It's an Addonics storage tower with 4 750gb drives in raid 10 and everything worked fine until my internal HDDs kicked the bucket and now that they are replaced, I decided to reinstall using Vista Home Premium 32 bit, got all the drivers and software needed for my raid setup and now the tower shows up, but only as a 373gb unformatted drive.

I've got all the most recent drivers and whatnot from Jmicron but the problem still persists. There was never any problem with XP recognizing the drive and I don't want to try and format the drive especially because of the 500gb or so of data that I can't lose.

New Computer: How Create An Image

Apr 18, 2008

My sister just got a new computer with Vista Home Premium. I was wondering if I can create an image of her old computer (running XP) and use that image on her new one? Or are there to many incompatibilities between the two OS's for this to work? If this will work, it would save a bunch of time transfering files and settings.

External Display:Image Streches

My laptop has an HDMI out port, and I just got an HDMI cable today, so I figured hey why not let's hook the computer up to the TV. It does work, but when I set it to display only on the TV, the image is stretched out as though it is too big for the screen. The display settings on the laptop are set to 1920x1080, so I dont understand why it is stretching like this.

Elements External Harddrive Not Showing Up In "my Computer"

Mar 2, 2009

My Elements 500G external hard drive has worked fine for years but recently it stopped showing up in "my computer" as a drive. I have windows vista and it recognizes that the elements drive is there (the safely remove hardware icon shows up and it appears in device management). I wouldn't be surprised if the drive was dying as I've had it awhile but since it's still recognized by the computer I was hoping there was some way to access it and salvage the files. Any one have any suggestions? (and I'm not particularly hardware savvy so anything that involves taking apart the drive is probably right out)

Do you install Windows on the new drive or just install the "ghost" image of the drive before it failed?

System Backup Clone Image

May 2, 2009

I have an HP laptop that came with Vista Home Premium installed.
Two drivers, the C: driver as usual and a 'D:' driver also known as "HP_RECOVERY".

Now my question is very simple and basic yet I'm baffled not figuring out a way to do it.

Is it possible to clone the image of the OS I'm running currently to that D: drive? What software do I use to do that?

I will also need to mention that the drive size is ~8GB so it's very small. If there is a way to clone the current image to that drive, i will have to extend it and make it bigger, how would you do that also

Making An Image Of A Dual Boot System

Nov 8, 2008

I have Acronis True Image and before I went the dual boot system route (XP + Vista x64), I made an image of my XP system but now that I am comfortable with both OS's, I would like to know if Acronis can make an image of my drive including both systems?

Before attempting to do this on my own and botching the already good image I have, I would like to hear it from the Gurus so... what say you? Oh, also, I have heard that Acronis can do this but nobody specified if I should start Acronis in Vista or in XP and that is another thing that baffles me. It shouldn't matter where I start the image process but making sure is my first priority since I tend to screw up things fairly quick when I go out guns blazing (so to speak!)

External HDD, System Restore

Sep 5, 2008

I have Vista Home Premium 32bit running on a Sony notebook. I actually ran system restore last night and have not installed anything since so my system is clean/fresh. I have a Maxtor 500GB external HDD which I connect to my PC via USB2.0.

When I connect the drive, it shows up in Explorer, it shows up in Disc Management, it gives the correct capacity, etc. However, every once in a while (yes this problem is random) when I try to access files/folders on the drive, Explorer will just hang. The busy cursor shows up, and nothing responds. The ONLY way to fix it is to pull the USB cable. Rebooting doesn't work b/c on the "shutting down" screen it just hangs UNLESS I disconnect the drive. Other times, I can go into a folder on the drive but only a few of the many files inside show up. However, sometimes the drive works NO PROBLEM and is very speedy!

I can't run any disc scan utils b/c they hang and the HDD again becomes unresponsive until I disconnect it. And I can never see properties of ALL the folders, nor can I change folder icons. While any of this is going on, the drive NEVER grinds while hanging. It doesn't seem to be searching for anything. It's like it's clogging up something w/ Windows. Also, in Explorer, the green bar is always growing as if searching.

How To Create New Operating System 3 Easy Steps

Jun 3, 2009

1 Remove some features from an existing OS
2 Add some new features
3 Get some customers

we'll start with Vista as our base (although similar principles could in theory be applied to any OS).

STEP 1. Remove some features. Right, so Vista was fat and overweight and nasty people laughed at her waddling obesely along the street. So could you perhaps slim her down, speed her up and make people generally like her? Yes, it's possible. Take out Movie Maker, Windows Calendar, Windows Photo Gallery,.. and make them separate downloads. You then have an instant performance gain (until of course they are re-added, but no need to mention that). This has another advantage of making it appear that you've spent a few years fine-tuning performance features, when really it's easily done in about half an hour.....................
