Could anyone explain to me why I cannot (for instance) create an ISO image file in C: I get an error message: "Unable to create or replace file Reason: A required privilege is not held by the client"
View 4 RepliesMy sister just got a new computer with Vista Home Premium. I was wondering if I can create an image of her old computer (running XP) and use that image on her new one? Or are there to many incompatibilities between the two OS's for this to work? If this will work, it would save a bunch of time transfering files and settings.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am interested in creating a system which works like everyday DELL's/HP's/SONY's etc where the HDD has a partition with an activate image of the OS. The boot menu lets you boot from the HDD by default but if the system needs to be cleaned (restored to factory defaults) it is as simple as choosing a option in the boot menu which simply installs the OS (activated i.e. no frequent activations) which still keeping almost every file I created personally.
FYI, I am trying to build my own system using Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit and would like to keep an activated image of my system that can restored anytime I need to start all over again. EDIT: I am only interested in going back to when the image was created. Ocassionally I would like to update the image when major service packs are released and tested
First off, why is there no microsoft group for windows 7? Secondly, and my question is windows 7 based, I want to create an image of my old XP computer & install it on my Windows 7 computer, so it will run under virtual PC. Is this possible?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had tried to move a file from another folder to my desktop. File move was taking forever and I had cancelled out. But it created a file on my desktop which is corrupted and the original file is corrupted (neither will open). I cannot delete this file from my desktop or other location now and it has seemed to slow down my PC. When I try to delete, I get a popup box that says "Recycling 1 item... from Desktop, Discovered 0 items (0 bytes)" and it just stays in an neverending do loop. After looking on internet, I have seen that Vista has issues deleting or even moving files.

wont open unless I put it in a folder first. I click on it and nothing
happens. I try right click > open with > and nothing happens, they will only
open if they are put in a folder. This problem only happens with image

I don't have SP1 installed on my Vista home premium.
My elderly Mother's Vista PC isn't working, and as she relies on this for shopping etc I need to get it working (I am several hundred miles from her). The PC tried to install the latest Vista updates (20/2/2008) but upon restart she gets the message "Windows failed to restart - a recent hardware/software change may be the cause - File windowssystem32winload.exe "The selected file could not be loaded". She doesn't have a start in "normal mode" option. I have walked her through trying system repair/restore using the Vista installation Cd, but after trying to restore she gets the message; "system restore failed due to an unspecified error; "cannot create a file when that file already exists" (0x800700b7) We have tried 3 different restore points with the same result.

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to print a web site image to an Adobe PDF file, Vista states that for security purposes the pdf file will be placed in a "virtual" temporary internet file folder, then opens the virtual folder on C drive, but then doesn't save the file in the folder. I've been able to work around the problem by disabling all user account control security, but there has to be an easier way. I'd like to save files without security forcing them to a
specific folder.
upgrade HD from 60G to 250G without having to reinstall all files and programs. Windows Complete PC Restore cannot see DVD with backup image file
1. Backed up C: using Windows Complete PC Backup. (6 DVDs no errors.)
2. Removed old HD and inserted new.
3. Booted Windows Vista install DVD. (I proceeded to partition HD but did not complete the install.)
4. From Windows Recovery Environment, I chose Windows Complete PC Restore.
5. Inserted Backup image DVD disc1.
6. When it looked for the location of the image it couldn't find it so it fails.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Vista Home Premium on an Acer stationary Aspire M3100. All running well except for one problem. I as a user can not install two specific programms. My wife and another user on the PC got the programms when I installed them, but I (admin.) cannot get them working. One is a programm for my Navigon GPS called NavigonFresh. I get two error messages: "Unable to create directory" and: "Cannot create file navigonavigon freshsettingsuser.xml". But as mentioned above the two other users on the machine have no problems!
The other one is my EPSON perfection scanner 1250. I installed it on the PC, but I can not use/open the programm - but the two other users on the machine have no problems! These are the only two programms on the PC giving me troubles. I tried to uninstall and reinstall but with same negative results. (I tried asking on my Danish newsgroup but negative).
In previous years I used Ghost to create the image of my harddrive. It was simple, easy procedure and very fast. I booted up computer to the command prompt and restored harddrive in few minutes!!! But it was FAT32 system. Now, with Vista I do not have a choice but to use NTSF file system. Which program offers the most features for disk image creation? I know it will be impossible for me to restore image from command boot option, but what the options I have? Can I for example take the harddrive to another computer and restore the image in there? Or create bootable CD (DVD?) and restore the image that way? Or I have to first install Windows and then restore?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to create a batch file so that I can bring up 2 sites at one time when I open my browser. I use Firefox & IE8. What I have done so far to no avail is created a file as follows and sent to desktop from notepad named test.bat:
without parenthesis in the above. I can get these to open consecutively, same browser window if I have a browser already open. But, not without browser open. How do I connect the 2 sites to open in 2 tabs, same window? I also added them as multi home pages, then sent shortcut to browser to desktop. This does work, but, not what I want.
Is there anyway to create a batch file and have these 2 sites open at start up, by-passing the desktop without clicking to open the browser? Also, I know that clicking on the shortcut to the browser that's on the desktop does slow down the launching process. If there is another way upon start up, will it be slower as well?
Windows Vista includes a great little utility that allows users to finally make soft and hard file system links in the file system. This can be very useful from a software compatibility standpoint as well as a great way to organize your computer. Unlike a shortcut, a link is at the file system level and can be used to create an alias for a file or folder that is in a different location. For example, you can create a hard link (Directory junction) called c:win that points to c:windowssystem32. After the link is created, you can open up command prompt or explorer and browse to c:win and you will see the contents of c:windowssystem32. This is not a new technology, it has actually been a core Linux and Unix feature for as far as I can remember but it is nice to finally have it in Windows Vista....
View 0 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 (system specs: laptop 2.1 Ghz core 2 duo, 4 gb RAM, 500gb hd (about half full) nvidia 8400M GS, Avira Premium Security Suite). I have had the computer for about a year running fine with 1 main admin account. Now when I need to create an account for another user I cannot create one, either admin or standard. When I create it, using either the control panel or command prompt, it creates the user picture, making the account visible on the control panel user accounts screen, and on logon screen. However, when trying to log into the new account I am greeted with the error "User profile service failed on logon. User profile cannot be loaded." The standard fix for this from various forums is to edit the registry key of the account. However, on going to regedit I see that no key even exists for the account. On further investigation I discover that no user files have been created either. I attempted a system restore, but discovered that all my past restore points were gone, and intruigingly, the computer had stopped createing 24 hour checkpoints. I cannot say for definite whether it was this issue or another one that caused system restore to mess up, as I don't check my system restore all that often. Either way, system restore is not an option. There have been mentions of a full Vista reinstall, though if at all possible I would like to avoid this.

Check to see if the disc is full.I have over 180 GB free space left. To get things to the desktop i can drag it into the tab section next to the start icon, and then drag onto desktop.But when i do this i am always required to give permission and it creates two desktop icons.i have been having problems with my catalyst control centre but i dont think they are related.

I don't want to create some dummy account just just to log in to join the domain. (i know how to delete from control panel>user account). actually this is for my client.

Well it is on my desktop, and I cannot get rid of it. Programs work, but must access them thru start menu. Tried to perform "system restore" but it would not correct the problem. View 7 Replies View RelatedMy 80gb Vista laptop is out of space, so I bought a 250gb drive and installed it in a USB 2.0 enclosure. I have tried both the True Image clone procedure and also partitioning the 250gb with 2 partitions then backing up the original drive to one of the partitions, replacing the 80 with 250 and tried to recover into the blank partition but no success.
I get the cannot boot message and must use the install cd to enable the new clone but I still am unable to boot into the cloned version. I have had great luck with Acronis but just cannot make this work. I am using True Image Home V10 Build 4.942) with Windows Vista Home Basic with SVC Pk1. Are there any of the drive manufacturers that have a utility that will get around this boot problem with Vista? I am ready to buy another drive just to get this done.
It's been a while but here goes.
I saved and have been using, a neat image (safe) and now want to change my theme. Is there any way I can save this so I can go back and use it if I change to something else then decide I want back?
My main concern is the time & trouble (& cost) it would take to re-install all my software . I have the original discs for most of my programs, though some ( I think) only allow a single installation. I also have an awful lot of downloaded software that I would need to re-install, as well as setting up my web connection again (it caused a few problems last time).
My question, is it possible to copy an 'image' of my current pc to a new pc including the registry etc ?
My data files are not a problem, I have backups.
I use Vista home premium.
States it is Vista Compatible. Has anyone used it and if so what is your impression.

Yesterday I used Symantec Ghost to image a XP machine. I was wondering if this would also be possible with Vista. Using something like a bootable Vista usb drive or cd or something?
