Is It Possible To Copy An 'image' Of My Current Pc To A New Pc
Aug 26, 2009
My main concern is the time & trouble (& cost) it would take to re-install all my software . I have the original discs for most of my programs, though some ( I think) only allow a single installation. I also have an awful lot of downloaded software that I would need to re-install, as well as setting up my web connection again (it caused a few problems last time).
My question, is it possible to copy an 'image' of my current pc to a new pc including the registry etc ?
I have a Win7 (Build 7000) installation and would like to use the VHD-Boot feature to boot into a Windows Vista (x64) installation. I have therefore prepared a Windows Vista VHD with my HyperV Server and generalised it. I used the following commands to add the VHD to my Boot menu:
bcdedit /copy {current} /d "Test" bcdedit /set {ID from the copy} device vhd=[c:]vmfsvistadisk01.vhd bcdedit /set {ID from the copy} osdevice vhd=[c:]vmfsvistadisk01.vhd bcdedit /set {ID from the copy} detecthal on
After rebooting and selecting the new entry I just get a error message (after the attempt to repair something) from Windows 7 (!). I have also tried to create a vista vhd using the win7 waik und imagex - same result. how I can get this running?
I purchased a new PC in early 2007 that came with XP. A month or so later I received the Vista upgrade CD which I have never installed. I intend to buy Windows 7 when it becomes available and wish to minimize my system upgrade problems as much as possible. Based on my understanding I would have to do a complete harddrive erase to install Win 7 and then reinstall all my applications. If possible and practical I'd like to upgrade XP to Vista and then Vista to Windows 7. My question am I likely to have problems going from a current up to date version of XP to a 2+ year old version of Vista which would require many updates to bring up to the current level?.
I have been looking for a better screenshot device/program, and I came upon this SnagIt8. My problem is after capturing the image and pasting it to a wordpad or equivalent, I couldn't find a way to copy/paste to a post like this one. The Paste was always grayed out when I tried to paste it here. Either that, or I would have an empty box with a red X at the top. I can't use the paperclip icon either, because people who clicked the link would be asked to join something before they could see the screenshot.
Okay I'm sure other people have had this problem also if they are constantly opening new windows while trying to work in the current one. It finally pissed me off to the point of posting for an answer to this problem. First of all I hate tabbed browsing cuz I like the benefits that come with just opening a new window to browse in- alt+tabbing, being able to use them side by side or whatever else.
But anyways so I'll be browsing online in one window, maybe filling out some form and then for whatever reason I'll need to open a second window so I'll open it and quickly click back into the window I was filling stuff out in, but the new window that I opened will pop up on top of the current window I'm using (filling out a form in) after it's done loading, causing me to have to minimize it/click back into the window I was using. Sometimes I'll only have to click on the current window once to stay in it when the new window loads, but other times I'll have to click maybe 3 times because the stupid new window hasn't finished loading and keeps popping up on top of the current one I'm using.
Here's the deal. Office 2007 was installed and working fine I used the Microsoft Cleanup Utility to remove a stubborn non-Office App. All Office 2007 apps now claim they have "Not Been Installed for the Current User" I can work around this by elevating to Admin ("Run as Administrator" - obviously this is undesireable for security reasons) I have tried repairing/uninstalling automatically & manually (i.e. deleting files and registry settings), altering permissions on setting files and registry nodes but nothing has worked.
I want to see the full list of file associations on my system (Vista 64) but I can find no way to get this information. In XP and previous versions of windows, one could get that info from windows explorer. In Vista, it seems you can only display those associations for a given application. Is there a way to obtain the full list in plain vanilla Vista or with an addon ?
I had to rebuild my workstation. I performed a backup, but not a system recovery. Just want my files. It backed up all my files, but when I try to restore them using the restore client, it only shows a small subset of the files I had under my user directory. However, if I look at the ext. disk I backed them up to, I see hundreds of zip files. If I look into those files, I see all my missing files. How come I cannot see all these files in my restore client? Is there a way to fix this? P.S. I have taken ownership of these files using my new account.
What is now called Windows Explorer in Vista has been crippled so that only the files and folders for the current user can be explored. Where is the replacement for Windows Explorer in Vista? I am looking for the tool that will allow an administrator to explore the entire hard drive, create folders and copy files to wherever necessary. I need to create a folder that will contain some executable and configuration files in a location where users cannot accidently find them and delete them.
I have been successfully backing-up to my Freecom hard drive classic 3.5 500GB via Windows Live however the drive keeps on filling up rather than overwriting/updating the current data, which is what I'd assumed was supposed to happen. Is this how it goes or have I missed something? The only option I have is to delete the current data and start again every month which is a bit of a pain!
I am running vista home and when i got my new laptop there was a trial version of office which has now expired, i have many docs saved in this format. I have today installed home and student 2007 but cannot do very much with any of my current docs - i have had an error message that says there is a conflict
1. Can i save the docs, inlcuidng powerpoint presentations, i have created and use them as previously? 2. How do i resolve this conflict without loosing any of my docs?
I am trying to copy files from my usb hard drive: K: to my network external drive Z: I am trying to copy everything from one to another (files in folders and files that are not in folders)
I tried selecting all and then send to Z:, but it took about six hours to copy about 20 gig (I have about 180 gig to copy)
I read some where that robocopy is a faster and better way to copy files. The thing is I do not know what syntax to use. I was wondering if someone could tell me the syntax I should use to copy EVERYTHING from the usb driveK: to the network drive Z:
My old Windows XP PC died months ago (motherboard problems) and so I took out the hard drive (which still functions fine) and put it in my new PC, but I can't seem to copy any of my files in the My Documents folder from the old drive to my newer larger drive. I've had this drive in here for the last several months and have had no problems writing other files to this 'older' drive (250 gig Maxtor 16mb cache, 7,200RPM drive (btw it's only a year old), but when I try to copy files to another drive I get the following error message: "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this file." This only happens with files that are in the My Documents folder. My current login has administrator rights, so I'm thinking some how this has something to do with this drive being from a different computer's installation of XP.
I really don't like the new Windows Live Messenger skin they have for beta. I really hope they make an option to switch back to the current skin style.
I keep receiving an Internet Explorer script error message telling me that "an error has occurred on the script on the current page - do you want to continue.....?" Can anyone tell me why this is and how I can eliminate the problem? I keep asking computer technicians from various companies, but everyone is passing the buck and won't give me an answer. Also, the same messages keep being downloaded into my inbox - any thoughts on this too.
I am Using Vista Ultimate 64. I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)
Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.
before this i try to install vista on my machine. and for sure in that time we need to create user (adminstrator) before we start using the vista. after that, i try to keep an image for my vista because if anything happen, it will be more easier to me. then, i try to image on my machine again. but, there already have i user which mean the administrator that i create during the 1st installation. so, when i do the image, i need to put the different user name because the user name that i try to create already exist. so that will create 2 different user when imaging is done. is there any way how to delete the 1st user? so when imaging is done, it will only 1 user (new user) and the windows will be automatically show the desktop. (i know how to delete from control panel>user account). actually this is for my client.
Mounting a CD image is a basic feature of almost every operating system package except for Microsoft Windows. Microsoft has never shipped this feature in any version of Windows including Windows Vista. Mounting a CD image is very useful when you have downloaded a .ISO cd image and you do not want to waste the time or the media to burn a copy. Since Windows Vista does not have this functionality built-in, you will need to download a utility. One popular utility that will mount CD images is called elby CloneDrive. Best of all, CloneDrive is free and easy to use. Follow these steps to mount CD images in Windows Vista with CloneDrive: ....
When I save any kind of image file to my desktop (jpeg, gif etc.) the file wont open unless I put it in a folder first. I click on it and nothing happens. I try right click > open with > and nothing happens, they will only open if they are put in a folder. This problem only happens with image files, all other files open with no problems.
I don't have SP1 installed on my Vista home premium.
I utilized Gadwin Print Screen to capture a screen. I captured same and was trying to send the photo to desktop as a "JPEG" file. Well it is on my desktop, and I cannot get rid of it. Programs work, but must access them thru start menu. Tried to perform "system restore" but it would not correct the problem. Can anyone help me get my desktop screen back?
My 80gb Vista laptop is out of space, so I bought a 250gb drive and installed it in a USB 2.0 enclosure. I have tried both the True Image clone procedure and also partitioning the 250gb with 2 partitions then backing up the original drive to one of the partitions, replacing the 80 with 250 and tried to recover into the blank partition but no success.
I get the cannot boot message and must use the install cd to enable the new clone but I still am unable to boot into the cloned version. I have had great luck with Acronis but just cannot make this work. I am using True Image Home V10 Build 4.942) with Windows Vista Home Basic with SVC Pk1. Are there any of the drive manufacturers that have a utility that will get around this boot problem with Vista? I am ready to buy another drive just to get this done.
I saved and have been using, a neat image (safe) and now want to change my theme. Is there any way I can save this so I can go back and use it if I change to something else then decide I want back?
I'm new to this forum so please be gentle if I made a mistake in posting this here or whatever. :-) I am a intern on a School for my education and currently I'm looking into Imaging. Yesterday I used Symantec Ghost to image a XP machine. I was wondering if this would also be possible with Vista. Using something like a bootable Vista usb drive or cd or something?
Under the adminstrator log in, all the shortcut images are showing under "all Programs" under the start menu. Under all other user log in's, there is a blank file image(white square) with an arrow. I can not access the program when click on the white square. Also, the shortcut tab is missing under properties. I recently used wipedrive(lost restore cd) to restore the system to original factory condition.
Some items require me to find the file location to reinstall. I tried the rebuild icon tutorial, the file associations, retore vista shortcuts/icons & the default program options. Nothing has worked. Also, I noticed when I try to open another window in internet explorer it says "can not display page". It use to say something to the effect "open tab tutorial".
