I want to see the full list of file associations on my system (Vista 64) but I can find no way to get this information. In XP and previous versions of windows, one could get that info from windows explorer. In Vista, it seems you can only display those associations for a given application. Is there a way to obtain the full list in plain vanilla Vista or with an addon ?
View 3 RepliesHaving changed my default browser, the .html and .htm file associations had been set to "unknown". Don't ask me why. Trying to set them via the usual mechanisms: "open with" or "file associations" menus does not work because they are populated only with MS programs. All attempts to select other programs via "browse" option fail. I can select the program but it is simply ignored and no change to the file associations happens. Nor is the selected program added to the list of programs available for selection. As there is no option provided for typing in the full path, as used to be the case with earlier and better operating systems, and the "browse" option does not work, I am totally stuck.
Is this a new MS policy to prevent users from running non-MS programs?? Whatever it is, it is very frustrating and affects all programs and extensions, not just the .html of the above example. Another very annoying thing is that even when I manage to run some non-MS programs manually, they will only work if run in "admin mode", as they are prevented from writing to disk. Are users not supposed to be allowed to write to our own disks anymore????
When I goto Associate a file type for a specific extension, it has it associated to Wordpad when it should be Excel. However, I am not able to change it as the "Always Use the selected program to open" is grayed out and I can't get it be selectable. How do I do it so I can associate the file type to always for Excel.

I assume that is Excel 2007, which I don't want. I want to change it to Excel 97-2003 so all my Excel documents will open in that. So I try to change the program by clicking on the Change program... button and the only program there is Microsoft Office Excel. I'm not given the option to change it to 97-2003.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI went to open a software disc that I just put in my drive and I moved to fast or something and clicked on the wrong option on the context menu and messed up the association to my cd/dvd rom drive. Now I cant get the drive to auto start and show the icon next to the cd drive letter. It also wont run if I double click on the drive.
I get an error that says: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel. Now I have tried everything from exefix_vista.reg, inffix_vista.reg, exefix_cu.reg. I'm not new to computers, but this has me all messed up. I need to use that disc for school. I even tried putting a disc in for my router software and still get the same error. I don't know where to go from here. I've uninstalled my drive and drivers, I've checked with Vista repair, nothing works. I don't want to have to reload my OS if I can help it.
I have changed the file assocaitions in the set associations control panel. This does not appear to have solved my problem as I have to save the attachments and open from the saved file. This works OK, but I want to open direct from the mail attachments just for convenience.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've cocked up and forgot to untick the box "always use" when I was viewing a file with notepad. Now there seems to be no way of removing that file association (like setting it to unknown application) Notepad doesn't come up in the default programs for some reason, and I assume it has to be registered for that to happen. I don't know why it's not registered by default since it's, to my knowledge, been a default windows program since forever. So, does anyone know what registry key you would alter to remove the file association that Vista Ultimate x64 wont let me remove by normal means.

When I click on the attachment I get a message that no program is associated with that file. However, when I download the file to a desktop folder and click on it, Vista has no problem opening PowerPoint's viewer application. Where does one set Vista Mail's file associations???? Or is there another setting somewhere?

I purchased a new PC in early 2007 that came with XP. A month or so later I received the Vista upgrade CD which I have never installed. I intend to buy Windows 7 when it becomes available and wish to minimize my system upgrade problems as much as possible. Based on my understanding I would have to do a complete harddrive erase to install Win 7 and then reinstall all my applications. If possible and practical I'd like to upgrade XP to Vista and then Vista to Windows 7. My question am I likely to have problems going from a current up to date version of XP to a 2+ year old version of Vista which would require many updates to bring up to the current level?.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I open a folder with a list of files for all View Options, the files are not listed in proper ascending sequence. I indexed the files to make sure that indexing may not be the factor in the Sort By Name not working properly. After the files were indexed, clicked the Sort By Name item in the View menu item, and the files are stilled not sorted porperly. Has anyone encountered this similar problem ? I suspect this may be a bug in Windows Vista File System. The folder had 87 files in it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedLast night I was working on an Access database. I closed the file and its folder and then decided to go back in to check something. I opened the folder and THE FILE WASN'T THERE!! Panic and chaos ensued for a while. I was able to find the file by going back into access and opening it from it's most recently used file list. I saved a backup copy etc.....
However, the original file is still not showing up in the folder. I have changed the folder settings to show hidden files, done a search, everything I can think of, but the file won't show up. Thinking that the original is somewhere else and perhaps I have just lost it, I moved a backup copy into the original folder and tried to change it's name to that of the original file. Windows gives me the warning that a file with that name already exists! If it exists, how come I can't see it? The folder says there are 9 items but there are actually 10 if you include this ghost file.
I try to delete a print job file from printer spool opening the printer icon besides the system clock, spool driver says "deleting" but never really delete! Normally I need to reboot to really eliminate the file from the list and print a new file. Sometimes this doest work and the printer, after reboot, try to print that file. There are another way to eliminate a file from the list IMMEDIATLY? Maybe deleting the temp file or something like that. (Windows Vista Home Premium)

I do not wish to retype the lists as text documents, which I nearly and effectively have to do when the OCR has been used previously in this manner. I have over 2,000 family photos that I have restored and "saved as..." with identifiying names and dates and need an editable list to be used by recipients of the copies that will be given. It's much more cumbersome to have to open the contact list, find a name and then click on the email button. Is that the only way to open a new mail with a person's name in the To field?

I have the original discs for most of my programs, though some ( I think) only allow a single installation. I also have an awful lot of downloaded software that I would need to re-install, as well as setting up my web connection again (it caused a few problems last time).
My question, is it possible to copy an 'image' of my current pc to a new pc including the registry etc ?
My data files are not a problem, I have backups.

Okay I'm sure other people have had this problem also if they are constantly opening new windows while trying to work in the current one. It finally pissed me off to the point of posting for an answer to this problem. First of all I hate tabbed browsing cuz I like the benefits that come with just opening a new window to browse in- alt+tabbing, being able to use them side by side or whatever else.
But anyways so I'll be browsing online in one window, maybe filling out some form and then for whatever reason I'll need to open a second window so I'll open it and quickly click back into the window I was filling stuff out in, but the new window that I opened will pop up on top of the current window I'm using (filling out a form in) after it's done loading, causing me to have to minimize it/click back into the window I was using. Sometimes I'll only have to click on the current window once to stay in it when the new window loads, but other times I'll have to click maybe 3 times because the stupid new window hasn't finished loading and keeps popping up on top of the current one I'm using.
Here's the deal. Office 2007 was installed and working fine I used the Microsoft Cleanup Utility to remove a stubborn non-Office App. All Office 2007 apps now claim they have "Not Been Installed for the Current User" I can work around this by elevating to Admin ("Run as Administrator" - obviously this is undesireable for security reasons) I have tried repairing/uninstalling automatically & manually (i.e. deleting files and registry settings), altering permissions on setting files and registry nodes but nothing has worked.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had to rebuild my workstation. I performed a backup, but not a system recovery. Just want my files. It backed up all my files, but when I try to restore them using the restore client, it only shows a small subset of the files I had under my user directory. However, if I look at the ext. disk I backed them up to, I see hundreds of zip files. If I look into those files, I see all my missing files. How come I cannot see all these files in my restore client? Is there a way to fix this? P.S. I have taken ownership of these files using my new account.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been fiddling with this for more than an hour now and it's driving me nuts. After I installed Vista, I quicky set up WMP cause I wanted to listen to some music. Then a few days later I got around to installing my fav audio and video player (Foobar and KMPlayer). Both work but Vista won't let them open files by default. I tried setting them both as the default program for their respective extensions via in program preferences, but no go. Neither are listed under "Set your default programs". I tried disassociating WMP, but all the boxes under "Set your default programs" are greyed out and I can't change them. I CAN manually set each program (Foobar and KMPlayer) the default choice by right clicking a file -> Open with -> Always use this program.
This way, Vista opens that file with the program chosen every time, the icon changes plus, under "Set your default programs" -> "Windows Media Player" that extension that I changed no longer has a tick next to it. Also, the the empty box is now editable, meaning I can switch the asscociation back to WMP if I want. All other boxes are still greyed out. Both programs can also be chosen manualy for each individual file via Open with. But none of this is a solution. I want WMP to release it's hold on all of its asscociations. So does anyone know, how to disable all asscociations held by WMP so some other program can grab them? I've been at it now for like forever and I'm kinda fed up with it. If anyone needs any additional info, just ask.
What is now called Windows Explorer in Vista has been crippled so that only the files and folders for the current user can be explored. Where is the replacement for Windows Explorer in Vista? I am looking for the tool that will allow an administrator to explore the entire hard drive, create folders and copy files to wherever necessary. I need to create a folder that will contain some executable and configuration files in a location where users cannot accidently find them and delete them.

Is this how it goes or have I missed something? The only option I have is to delete the current data and start again every month which is a bit of a pain!

Some of my file associations seem to have disappeared and i am being told to reset them in the control panel - that bit is easy enough but i'm having trouble setting them for actual folders, i can't open the folder just by clicking on it, i have to right click and then select open. i have spent hours trying to find a way to set the association for the folder but no luck - i dont know if this makes any difference but the folder i am trying to open, i marked as hidden. once i openiit with the right click everything else seems to be ok.
