Restoring From Backups Not Made On Current System.

Dec 6, 2009

I had to rebuild my workstation. I performed a backup, but not a system recovery. Just want my files. It backed up all my files, but when I try to restore them using the restore client, it only shows a small subset of the files I had under my user directory. However, if I look at the ext. disk I backed them up to, I see hundreds of zip files. If I look into those files, I see all my missing files. How come I cannot see all these files in my restore client? Is there a way to fix this? P.S. I have taken ownership of these files using my new account.

System Restoring And Formatting

Oct 18, 2009

I was wondering, since a system restore is basically restoring your system to a state it was at before, does it have anything to do with files you have deleted/moved etc. (will a system restore undo file deletions?), or does it have only to do with things like the registry? (restoring key entries in the registry) What does it have to do with and not to do with? Secondly let's say you purchased a dell, it's going to be at factory condition, meaning it has windows and a bunch of other stuff on it. You install a fresh copy of windows via a windows cd, thereby deleting every driver and utility on there and have only a seemingly useless thing.

1. Will a system restore bring your computer back to factory condition? (the way it was when you bought it)
2. I also guess you can do a system restore if and only if you have a system restore point. How do you make one and how can you tell you've made one before? (in other words how can you tell you made one at a certain point and how it is like? Or, if someone else made one for you, how can you check this and what the restore point is like?)

Upgrade Current XP With Old CD: Date Version Of XP To A 2+ Year Old Version Of Vista Which Would Require Many Updates To Bring Up To The Current Level

Aug 26, 2009

I purchased a new PC in early 2007 that came with XP. A month or so later I received the Vista upgrade CD which I have never installed. I intend to buy Windows 7 when it becomes available and wish to minimize my system upgrade problems as much as possible. Based on my understanding I would have to do a complete harddrive erase to install Win 7 and then reinstall all my applications. If possible and practical I'd like to upgrade XP to Vista and then Vista to Windows 7. My question am I likely to have problems going from a current up to date version of XP to a 2+ year old version of Vista which would require many updates to bring up to the current level?.

Restoring Files And Folders After System Restore?

Sep 9, 2008

I currently am using vista 64 bit premium operating system. I have completed a system restore and when I try to save or view my favorites folder it does not work? After the restore I found my "favorites" folder in my "downloads" folder. When I try to use the "favorites" shortcut I can view my history, but my favorites are blank? If I go to my "favorites" folder in my "downloads" folder the favorites I have saved show up in there, but I cannot open them?

Cloning A Drive: Tranfer Entire Drive Incuding All Files And The Operating System From Current IDE HDD To A New SATA Drive

May 2, 2008

I am Using Vista Ultimate 64. I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)

Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.

Though the automatic discovery never worked between the two but after manually adding the mouse after each bootup, the mouse worked fine before the SP2 upgrade. Since then the mouse doesn't show up in the paring window at all.

Made New Account And Getting Blue Screen

Mar 23, 2008

when i made a new account i put it as a standard user and when i went to that user to set it up i was just a blue screen and i could see the mouse and move it around and when i hit ctrl-alt-delete the little list would come up and when it clicked on task manager it would come up and nothing was running in the applications so i clicked on new task and typed in winver because that is the only task i can remember and it came up any you could see the information or the computer.

so i logged off the user and went back to my account (wich it the admin) and set the new user as an administrator and then i logged back on to the account and the screen came up and you could do everything. I thought it was a one time thing so i went back and put it back on standard and tried it again and the same thing happend. i have tried it atleast five times but nothing has happend. i do not know what to do but leave it on administrator but i dont want that account on admin.

Is It Possible To Copy An 'image' Of My Current Pc To A New Pc

Aug 26, 2009

My main concern is the time & trouble (& cost) it would take to re-install all my software . I have the original discs for most of my programs, though some ( I think) only allow a single installation. I also have an awful lot of downloaded software that I would need to re-install, as well as setting up my web connection again (it caused a few problems last time).

My question, is it possible to copy an 'image' of my current pc to a new pc including the registry etc ?

My data files are not a problem, I have backups.

I use Vista home premium.

Filling HD With Backups Failed

Mar 31, 2009

When I got this Vista machine, I started using the backup program. It's easier than copying files to various disks and diskettes.

Problem is probably pretty basic. The backups go week after week 'til they fill my external drive. They create one full backup, then a new subfolder every week 'til I run out of room.

Backup set
Backup File 1
Backup File 2
Backup File 3

I tried deleting "Backup File 1" and the next backup failed.

Keep Current Window On Top As New One Loads?

Sep 1, 2008

Okay I'm sure other people have had this problem also if they are constantly opening new windows while trying to work in the current one. It finally pissed me off to the point of posting for an answer to this problem. First of all I hate tabbed browsing cuz I like the benefits that come with just opening a new window to browse in- alt+tabbing, being able to use them side by side or whatever else.

But anyways so I'll be browsing online in one window, maybe filling out some form and then for whatever reason I'll need to open a second window so I'll open it and quickly click back into the window I was filling stuff out in, but the new window that I opened will pop up on top of the current window I'm using (filling out a form in) after it's done loading, causing me to have to minimize it/click back into the window I was using. Sometimes I'll only have to click on the current window once to stay in it when the new window loads, but other times I'll have to click maybe 3 times because the stupid new window hasn't finished loading and keeps popping up on top of the current one I'm using.

Word Not Installed For Current User

Here's the deal. Office 2007 was installed and working fine I used the Microsoft Cleanup Utility to remove a stubborn non-Office App. All Office 2007 apps now claim they have "Not Been Installed for the Current User" I can work around this by elevating to Admin ("Run as Administrator" - obviously this is undesireable for security reasons) I have tried repairing/uninstalling automatically & manually (i.e. deleting files and registry settings), altering permissions on setting files and registry nodes but nothing has worked.

Incremental Backups What Happens When You Delete A File

Jun 12, 2009

When you do incremental backups, what happens when you delete a file = because you don't want it on your machine and then you do a back up. I assume that file is still within the backupfile and will be reinstalled when and if you do a restore. Is there a simple way of removing files from your backup data so they = will not restore. I am particularily thinking of a lot of shareware, 30 trial stuff that I would want reinstalled..................

Storage Device : Reach My Backups

May 4, 2009

My desktop with WinXP installed seriously crashed. I had backed up all on a Seagate Free Agent storage device. I started using my laptop, with Vista Home Premium installed, for all my computer projects. I had backed these up but when I added the storage device to the laptop it told me I would have to format the drive before I could use it with the laptop. Of course, then all my backups would be lost. How can I get around this in order to install and/or reach my backups from the storage device to the laptop. I thought I'd be able to carry these backups from computer to computer but I find that is not the case.

Deleting Old Backups Creating New Backup

Sep 21, 2008

I have the automatic backup set to run every day at midday, saving to my external hard drive, and this has been working fine (I think as I have never tried to restore anything!). As some of these backups were a few months old I thought I would do a bit of tidying, so I deleted some of the older sets. Todays backup failed. The only way I could get the daily backup to work was to create a new full backup first. So, is there any way of deleting old backups without creating a new full backup first?

Acronis Backups Burned To DVDs Won't Recognize

Oct 20, 2008

I use Acronis True Image 11 for backing up, all from the bootable CD, I don't have Acronis installed. After creating an image I verify it with Acronis. I also like to burn the image to DVDs and verify them on DVD also. When I burn them to DVDs with Vista, Acronis wont recognize them to verify or restore. If I burn them with Nero Acronis will verify them and can restore them. Any images burned to DVDs would already have been verified while on the HD before burning to DVDs. Any body know what the difference is between burning them with Nero verses Vista in relation to Acronis not recognizing the images burned to DVDs by Vista?

Restoring Without Restore Cd

Sep 9, 2008

My wife's Emachine PC (produced just prior to Gateway's takeover of Emachines) originally came with Vista Home Premium on it. Because of some classes that she was taking, it was an absolute MUST that she had XP on it (she wouldn't even consider a virtual machine go figure?). So, we removed Vista and installed XP. Now that the class is done, her XP load is going screwy because of all kinds of garbage that my step-son did on it via various less-than-savory websites, and she wants Vista back. Between then and now we moved and we haven't the first clue where any of the restore CDs or DVDs are - BUT - there is a partition on the hard drive that was created by PC Angel. Is there any way that we can get the data from that partition back into place on the C drive and have a usable, bootable OS without having to jump through hoops or shelling out money for a new restore CD/DVD ? It would appear by the folder structures there and everything that I've seen in them that it's a full blown setup of Vista Home Premium.
