Jun 21, 2009I am trying to configure Vista to perform daily backups. It does a full backup then incremental backups. Is there a way to configure full backups daily?

So, if C should die, boot to identical D. Has saved me and business clents many times. But alas, whatever is used as bootini in Vista seems a bit more difficult. If I have two identical hard drives with the same vista OS, how do I configure the bootini menu to boot to either one?

May 9, 2008I have both my windows defender and my anti-virus program set to automatically scan my computer at 2 am on a daily basis. I usually put my computer into hibernation when I am done working on it and for some reason it doesn't seem like either one of these programs is doing what it should be doing. If I actually do a complete shutdown on my computer then after I restart it it tells me that my computer hasn't been scanned in x amount of days. I thought I had everything set up correctly but I guess I may be missing something. I have never had an issue like this. Every other computer I have had things worked and scanned just fine like they were set up to do.

Mar 23, 2008Since I bought this new laptop (toshiba Satellite a215-s7437) I've noticed that every day I check the available space of the hard disk it just keeps getting smaller. I formated the disk about a week ago and obviously it helped, but the problem is starting to reapear...Eg,yesterday it said I had about 147gb, today it has 145gb.... I didn't download nothing, what's worse, i've been deleting stuff to make more room... By the way, its a 200GB HDD, SQ004513V03.

Deleting Old Update Backups
May 9, 2008I read an article about deleting old Update Backups in XP. The article showed where they were stored. Where are the old Vista Update Backup folders stored? I understand from the article that they take up considerable hard drive space. I don't intend on deleting the most recent but are there any others that should not be deleted?

Mar 31, 2009When I got this Vista machine, I started using the backup program. It's easier than copying files to various disks and diskettes.
Problem is probably pretty basic. The backups go week after week 'til they fill my external drive. They create one full backup, then a new subfolder every week 'til I run out of room.

I assume that file is still within the backupfile and will be reinstalled when and if you do a restore. Is there a simple way of removing files from your backup data so they = will not restore. Storage Device : Reach My Backups
May 4, 2009My desktop with WinXP installed seriously crashed. I had backed up all on a Seagate Free Agent storage device. I started using my laptop, with Vista Home Premium installed, for all my computer projects. I had backed these up but when I added the storage device to the laptop it told me I would have to format the drive before I could use it with the laptop. Of course, then all my backups would be lost. How can I get around this in order to install and/or reach my backups from the storage device to the laptop. I thought I'd be able to carry these backups from computer to computer but I find that is not the case.

Sep 21, 2008I have the automatic backup set to run every day at midday, saving to my external hard drive, and this has been working fine (I think as I have never tried to restore anything!). As some of these backups were a few months old I thought I would do a bit of tidying, so I deleted some of the older sets. Todays backup failed. The only way I could get the daily backup to work was to create a new full backup first. So, is there any way of deleting old backups without creating a new full backup first?

Dec 6, 2009I had to rebuild my workstation. I performed a backup, but not a system recovery. Just want my files. It backed up all my files, but when I try to restore them using the restore client, it only shows a small subset of the files I had under my user directory. However, if I look at the ext. disk I backed them up to, I see hundreds of zip files. If I look into those files, I see all my missing files. How come I cannot see all these files in my restore client? Is there a way to fix this? P.S. I have taken ownership of these files using my new account.

Oct 20, 2008I use Acronis True Image 11 for backing up, all from the bootable CD, I don't have Acronis installed. After creating an image I verify it with Acronis. I also like to burn the image to DVDs and verify them on DVD also. When I burn them to DVDs with Vista, Acronis wont recognize them to verify or restore. If I burn them with Nero Acronis will verify them and can restore them. Any images burned to DVDs would already have been verified while on the HD before burning to DVDs. Any body know what the difference is between burning them with Nero verses Vista in relation to Acronis not recognizing the images burned to DVDs by Vista?

On my C: drive they're called windows.old.5 or windows.old.4 etc. They are taking up half the space on my hard drive! Any time I try to delete them it tells me that i need permission to perform this action, but I am the only person who uses the laptop as it is mine. What can I do? I'm using apporx. 50B of my hard disk space on my laptop and each back up job seems to be around 1GB. When I go through the wizard, Vista never asked me whether I wanted to do a full or incremental back up. Can anyone tell me whether Vista is performing full or incremental backups? Is there a trial version of vista x64 that I can download so I can make sure everything runs the way it does under xp before I purchase vista? I can't see spending the money on an OS and finding out that the system dosen't perform right, things crash or are incompatible. I don't want to be downloading anything off bittorrent, just looking for something where I know the source is legit and not full of extra junk. Jun 1, 2008We must all realize that Microsoft has it's own direction. We are pretty much not in control of our own computers, nor will we be ever. The issues I have seen, and what you all are seeing is the results of many things. All of which I will not be able to address.
1st You really need to have only Vista machines.. cures all problems..
2nd You really need to have a Server to perform DNS and DHCP, even all of us home users. Gee I wonder why there is now even a Home version of Server.
3rd We really all need to be MSCE's if we are going to have more than one computer on the network.
4th We need artificial inteligence to figure out what the wizards are doing.

Can Not Configure Printer
Apr 6, 2008I am trying to configure a new paper size for my printer and it was very easy with XP, but when I try to do it in Vista all the properties appear disabled. (Printers->Printer Server Properties). With XP I can configure a new form, give it a name, write new sizes and save, but Vista do not let me do it.

Feb 8, 2008Couldn't really tell from the Repair Install tutorial, so which retail version of Vista do I need to purchase, so that I can perform a repair install, via "upgrade" of Vista? As I look at my OEM Home Premium disk, it has the options to install ALL versions of Vista, so does that mean I could buy the cheapest retail version, use it and perform a repair install of my OEM version, by simply selecting the correct OS as per your "Repair Install" tutorial, and then go from there?
Basically, I would like to have a "God" mode DVD, that allows me to a)perform a repair install of existing Vista installs, and/or b)perform a clean install, and to be able to do a) or b) simply by telling the installation process which version I have (Home Basic, Ultimate, etc.), and whether the copy is retail or OEM. I thought this is why Microsoft WENT to the DVD that would allow all installs, simply by selecting the right OS and OEM or Retail.

Configure Windows For Newbies
Apr 26, 2008After a couple weeks of pulling my hair out and threatening to go find that hammer, I found this site and the 200+ Tutorials. Below are the steps I took to get to a stable, working Vista Home Premium 32 bit. There is no new information here. Everything came from the tutorials and threads I read here before starting.
1. I made a backup of everything I wanted to save. Fortunately, most of my files were already on DVD’s from the old computer. I burned my Anti Virus, Anti Spyware and all the device driver updates I had downloaded during the ‘Insanity Times’. I also downloaded several of the Tutorials so that I could access to them without an Internet connection. I then unplugged my Internet connection. I used the recovery feature to reset the computer to its original factory installation.
2. After reboot, I did steps one and two from here: Speed Up the Performance of Vista
3. I next installed my Anti Virus & Anti Spyware. When setting up the AV, I set real time protection on and email scanning off. The Anti Spyware doesn’t load at start up as I let Windows Defender do the real time scanning. When installing programs I right click and choose ‘Run as Administrator’ rather than just clicking on the setup file. 4. I then rebooted. While the computer was shutting down to reboot, I plugged the Internet connection back in......................
Not Configure Pdf Driver(Error: -8)
Jun 26, 2009Just got a new laptop and trying to get my invoicing program up and running again. The computer keeps telling me that it could not configure pdf driver(Error: -8). Is this a Vista issue or other and if other, could someone please point me in the right direction?

Mar 23, 2008Is there a way to grant an applicatoin the right to execute now and forever more? An app that I use 3,4,10,15 times a day triggers an UAC prompt. I understand that the app should be written in a different manner so that it does not need Admin rights. Until it is re-written, I do not want to be prompted __EVERY__ time i launch it. Is this possible?
Since I think I already know the answer (but I am wrong far more than I would like to admit which is why i am posting), Why not? and to answer the first 3 arguments against:
1) I don't care that the app should be written differently. It is not written differently now, and I need to run it now.
2) It's not really a security hole to whitelist an app(s) - UAC is still running. Firewall is still running. User is still a least priveledge account, etc.
3) i haven't thought far enough to have 3 counter arguments.
Can someone explain to MS the value in grannular configuration? 'Configure UAC' should have a few more options than Turn On / Off.

Do you kind folks need any additional info?
