Networks: Server To Perform DNS And DHCP
Jun 1, 2008
We must all realize that Microsoft has it's own direction. We are pretty much not in control of our own computers, nor will we be ever. The issues I have seen, and what you all are seeing is the results of many things. All of which I will not be able to address.
1st You really need to have only Vista machines.. cures all problems..
2nd You really need to have a Server to perform DNS and DHCP, even all of us home users. Gee I wonder why there is now even a Home version of Server.
3rd We really all need to be MSCE's if we are going to have more than one computer on the network.
4th We need artificial inteligence to figure out what the wizards are doing.
If all else fails refer back to 1,2,3,4

I use a Verizon USB broadband modem attached to my Vista Home Premium desktop using ICS thru a wireless network for internet access and a home network. The desktop is linked to the wireless by CAT5 cable to a regular port on the router. We can then connect my wife's XP and my Linux laptops wirelessly. The router has DHCP disabled and all networked machines get their ip thru ICS from the desktop. This has worked well for 2 years. Suddenly I get limited connectivity from my NIC and a private ip (169.xxx.xx.xx). I looked at the services and found the DHCP server had been stopped.
When I tried to restart it as a network service I got an error stating "the account specified for this service is different from other services running in the same process." If I change the logon to Local Service I can restart the service but it still will not give the NIC a valid ip. I have tried to use the diagnose repair option from network and sharing center but it fails as well.

I Have An HP Dv5t Pavilion With An Intel Pentium Dual CPU T3200 @ 2.00GHz, My Wireless Internal Network Card Is A "Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN".I Have Been Using This Laptop For 2 Months With No Problems At All. And Just On Thursday My Norton 60 Trial Ran Out, So Of Course I Deleted It From My Control Panel. And After That, Is When I Started Getting This Problem. I Have Looked Around The Web And Tried A Dozen Different Solutions That Do Not Work For Me. And It Has Been Pissing Me Off So Much To the Point Where I'm About To Format The Hard Drive. I Do Not Wish To Take Such Drastic Measures.

I am trying to troubleshoot my daughter's desktop Vista computer. She has several other machines (XP and Vista) that are connected to her local LAN and workgroup. The problem computer is set to receive a DHCP address - which it gets - but then labels the connection as "Unidentified" and the Diagnose reports that it can't see the router. It cannot see any of the other computers either.
The computer is set up as a Private network; network discovery ON; File Sharing ON; Public folder sharing ON; Printer sharing ON; Password Protected Sharing OFF; Media sharing OFF. When trying to customize the connection, she can NOT enter a name for the network. Text entered in the field will appear, but not "take". Manage Network Connections shows only one network and it is labeled "Unidentified"...........

When I check the status of my network adapter, it says that DHCP is not enabled. How do I enable it in Windows Vista Ultimate? I'm trying to enable it for ICS to/with a windows XP Pro computer. The other computer (XP) is not auto configuring itself with the right type of network settings. (IP, Subnet mask, & Gateway) For instance: it will configure itself to use 169.254.37.72, 255.255.0.0 instead of 192.168.0.(2-255), 255.255.255.0, and Default Gateway of 192.168.0.1.

I can't connect to the cable modem at all. There is just no way to get it working for whatever weird reason. I don't get assigned any gateway, I don't get any IP (so it rewerts to a funky 169.whatever adress). Now, I used to have this exact cable modem connected to my computer, with internet, 2 days ago. I would share internet trough the other ethernet port that I didn't use to another computer, and everything would work. Then we just had our internet crap on ourself the other day. And it was my computer that just felt like killing the internet. Ever since: My computer wont connect to the internet at all, it wont even communicate and get ip from the cable modem.
And before I get any questions on it: Took the cable from the cable modem, and jerked it into the other computer, and presto, I'm talking to you guys. No problems at all, and it worked instantly. Didn't even have to reset or restart or configure anything on the other one. Sadly the other computer only has 1 Ethernet port, and the cable modem wont work with any routers inbetween, and also only has 1 Ethernet port on it (yay for stupid hardware *sigh*). So with that and that it working not 2 days ago, makes me really wonder what is going on.............

After joining the Win2K3 domain, Vista still OK after the first reboot, but after a subsequent shutdown/restart, the following happens: * DHCP Client service shuts down with a 1004 Access is denied error. * No IP address is leased from the DHCP server (since no DHCP Client service) Additional information: In addition to the DHCP Client not starting, the following "automatic" startup services are failing as well:

As things stand right now: PC 1 - Windows Vista Business. Firewall disabled. DHCP address from Linksys wired DSL router. PC 2 - Windows XP Pro. Firewall disabled. DHCP address from Linksys wired DSL router. Both machines are in the same workgroup.
The XP machine can ping the router, ping the Vista machine by IP address, access the internet, access file shares on the Vista machine
by ip address (\addressshare). It cannot ping the Vista machine by name. The Vista machine can ping the router and access the internet. It cannot ping the XP machine by name or address (request timed out).

For some reason, my laptop has installed 6 different versions of vista on it. On my C: drive they're called windows.old.5 or windows.old.4 etc. They are taking up half the space on my hard drive! Any time I try to delete them it tells me that i need permission to perform this action, but I am the only person who uses the laptop as it is mine. What can I do? I have looked at other threatds with this problem, I have made myself administrator, tried taking ownership over the files, and they still won't delete.

I have Vista Busines on my laptop. I'm using the built-in back up tool to back up my laptop onto my home NAS device. I'm using apporx. 50B of my hard disk space on my laptop and each back up job seems to be around 1GB. When I go through the wizard, Vista never asked me whether I wanted to do a full or incremental back up. Can anyone tell me whether Vista is performing full or incremental backups? Does each backup job stand alone or do they need previous back ups in case I want to restore something?

I have been poking around Google and such for the last day and can't seem to find a definite answer. Is there a trial version of vista x64 that I can download so I can make sure everything runs the way it does under xp before I purchase vista? I can't see spending the money on an OS and finding out that the system dosen't perform right, things crash or are incompatible. I don't want to be downloading anything off bittorrent, just looking for something where I know the source is legit and not full of extra junk. I have been afraid to make the switch because of all the bad publicity and whatnot going around about it, but I want to see for myself what vista will do for my apps and on my system.

Couldn't really tell from the Repair Install tutorial, so which retail version of Vista do I need to purchase, so that I can perform a repair install, via "upgrade" of Vista? As I look at my OEM Home Premium disk, it has the options to install ALL versions of Vista, so does that mean I could buy the cheapest retail version, use it and perform a repair install of my OEM version, by simply selecting the correct OS as per your "Repair Install" tutorial, and then go from there?
Basically, I would like to have a "God" mode DVD, that allows me to a)perform a repair install of existing Vista installs, and/or b)perform a clean install, and to be able to do a) or b) simply by telling the installation process which version I have (Home Basic, Ultimate, etc.), and whether the copy is retail or OEM. I thought this is why Microsoft WENT to the DVD that would allow all installs, simply by selecting the right OS and OEM or Retail.

This is not causing any problems, I just don't know why. I have an i7 on a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5, gigabit Linksys switch, Norton 2008 firewall, Vista 32bit, and 3 PCs (Vista, Vista, XP) in a LAN. Vista doesn't seem to think a LAN/switch is a real network? I can see all of the other network PCs, connect to the internet (DSL) thru a switch connected Linksys wireless router, share files, and printers; but it's bugging me.

I have a network share setup b/w a Vista Ultimate x32 and XP machines. Using the XP machine, I open the Vista hosted share but found some files "missing", ie. even though they physically exist in the Vista machine, I simply cannot see them from XP. Turns out that these files are missing the EVERYONE in the File Permissions (right click file, properties, security).
These are files downloaded using Firefox, and whether they are JPG, AVI, TXT, DOC, XLS they are all missing the EVERYONE permission. If I download the same files using Internet Explorer, the files get created with the EVERYONE permission. My current workarounds ... which none are desirable are this: - Use Internet Explorer- Add EVERYONE permission for each file manually (you have to do this one by one, can't select multiple files and perform bulk operation) - Use CMD line utilities like takeown and icacls. Note this is a secure home network, and while file sharing using EVEYRONE isn't the safest way to do this, I can finetune this later. The key problem at hand is what I've described above. FireFox create files with the full permissions, same way IE does.

I boot up with cd and do a Starup Repair but it stll gives me black screen with the mouse arrow. The details of the repair is of root causes 1 and all the error codes are 0x0 The last sentence it says Root causes found:- Boot status indicate that the OS booted successfully Reading throiugh this forum I also do a scannow at c:>sfc /scannow but it gives me a message that "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" Just wonder what can I do next to get my vista going as it is still giving me the black screen with the mouse arrow.

I'm wondering if it's possible to set up my computer (it has two ethernet connectors) to connect to 2 different networks at the same time? (this would be both "wired" networks, but if wireless is easier I have wireless USB adapters I can utilize as both of my network routers are wired & wireless).

I've encountered an issue with my networking where my 1Gbps LAN has it's speed capped at 54Mbps. I'm using a laptop with a 1Gbps NIC and 54Mbps WIFI adapter. The WIFI is connected to an wireless access point (network 1). The 1Gbps NIC is connected to another network. Both networks are private. The networks are not connected. While transferring between my laptop and a Windows XP box that is only on the 1Gbps network I've noticed the speed stays at a constant 54Mbps during the entire transfer. I'm wondering why the speed of an 1Gbps network is being capped at 54Mbps.

I am having a problem with the finding wireless networks, The problem started that sometimes I was not able to view wireless networks even though the wireless is turned on and sometimes I am not able to see certain networks, however I was able to view the networks sometimes on restarting or at a later time. The problem is that now while I am connected to a wireless network, sometimes it just disconnects and "Connect to a network " views that it can't find any wireless networks (even though my colleague next to me can see them and is still connected) and if i try to troubleshoot it tells me that my wireless device is switched off even though it is still on and if i actually switch it off it is not recognized to be switched off (the color indicator for off and on doesn't change ) The only way that I can connect again is to restart (and sometimes I have to do it more than once before I can see wireless networks again) I am not sure if it is a Vista problem or a hardware problem ...I have a HP Pavilion dv6000

I have two PCI wireless network cards from two different brands, Netgear WG311V2 and D-Link DWl-G520+. My Vista Ultimate 32-bit SP2 system has 4GB of RAM. Neither will detect wireless networks when the system RAM is greater than 2GB. If I pull out one 2GB stick, it works fine. Put it back in, failure to see networks. I tried the Netgear on a Windows 2003 Standard 32 bit SP2 with 4GB of RAM and it worked ok.
