Software That Perform Bootvis On Windows Vista?

Mar 23, 2008

Is there software out there that will perform similarly to Bootvis on Windows Vista? I would like to trace through Windows' boot up to retrieve driver start up times and determine bottlenecks.

"sfc /scannow" Windows Resource Protection Could Not Perform The

Mar 23, 2008

I'm using Vista Ultimate. You can suppose that if I'm writing here it's because I'm finding some problems (and I'm unable to solve them by myself). I'm quite sure that I don't have malware on my computer. It's usually not connected to internet. I think I have some kind of system files & registry corruption.

"Chkdsk" says the filesystem is ok. Next step would be running "sfc" (sfc /scannow). But it refuses to start. The message is: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." I already tried it starting in "safe mode". I tried also to install "Service Pack 1" but it I couldn't.

You Need Permission To Perform This Action..

Apr 24, 2010

For some reason, my laptop has installed 6 different versions of vista on it. On my C: drive they're called windows.old.5 or windows.old.4 etc. They are taking up half the space on my hard drive! Any time I try to delete them it tells me that i need permission to perform this action, but I am the only person who uses the laptop as it is mine. What can I do? I have looked at other threatds with this problem, I have made myself administrator, tried taking ownership over the files, and they still won't delete.

What Type Of Backup Does Perform?

Mar 23, 2008

I have Vista Busines on my laptop. I'm using the built-in back up tool to back up my laptop onto my home NAS device. I'm using apporx. 50B of my hard disk space on my laptop and each back up job seems to be around 1GB. When I go through the wizard, Vista never asked me whether I wanted to do a full or incremental back up. Can anyone tell me whether Vista is performing full or incremental backups? Does each backup job stand alone or do they need previous back ups in case I want to restore something?

System Doesn't Perform Right

Jan 19, 2008

I have been poking around Google and such for the last day and can't seem to find a definite answer. Is there a trial version of vista x64 that I can download so I can make sure everything runs the way it does under xp before I purchase vista? I can't see spending the money on an OS and finding out that the system dosen't perform right, things crash or are incompatible. I don't want to be downloading anything off bittorrent, just looking for something where I know the source is legit and not full of extra junk. I have been afraid to make the switch because of all the bad publicity and whatnot going around about it, but I want to see for myself what vista will do for my apps and on my system.

Networks: Server To Perform DNS And DHCP

Jun 1, 2008

We must all realize that Microsoft has it's own direction. We are pretty much not in control of our own computers, nor will we be ever. The issues I have seen, and what you all are seeing is the results of many things. All of which I will not be able to address.

1st You really need to have only Vista machines.. cures all problems..

2nd You really need to have a Server to perform DNS and DHCP, even all of us home users. Gee I wonder why there is now even a Home version of Server.

3rd We really all need to be MSCE's if we are going to have more than one computer on the network.

4th We need artificial inteligence to figure out what the wizards are doing.

If all else fails refer back to 1,2,3,4

Which Retail DVD Will Perform Repair (Upgrade) Install?

Feb 8, 2008

Couldn't really tell from the Repair Install tutorial, so which retail version of Vista do I need to purchase, so that I can perform a repair install, via "upgrade" of Vista? As I look at my OEM Home Premium disk, it has the options to install ALL versions of Vista, so does that mean I could buy the cheapest retail version, use it and perform a repair install of my OEM version, by simply selecting the correct OS as per your "Repair Install" tutorial, and then go from there?

Basically, I would like to have a "God" mode DVD, that allows me to a)perform a repair install of existing Vista installs, and/or b)perform a clean install, and to be able to do a) or b) simply by telling the installation process which version I have (Home Basic, Ultimate, etc.), and whether the copy is retail or OEM. I thought this is why Microsoft WENT to the DVD that would allow all installs, simply by selecting the right OS and OEM or Retail.

Can't Select Multiple Files Perform Bulk Operation

Feb 9, 2009

I have a network share setup b/w a Vista Ultimate x32 and XP machines. Using the XP machine, I open the Vista hosted share but found some files "missing", ie. even though they physically exist in the Vista machine, I simply cannot see them from XP. Turns out that these files are missing the EVERYONE in the File Permissions (right click file, properties, security).

These are files downloaded using Firefox, and whether they are JPG, AVI, TXT, DOC, XLS they are all missing the EVERYONE permission. If I download the same files using Internet Explorer, the files get created with the EVERYONE permission. My current workarounds ... which none are desirable are this: - Use Internet Explorer- Add EVERYONE permission for each file manually (you have to do this one by one, can't select multiple files and perform bulk operation) - Use CMD line utilities like takeown and icacls. Note this is a secure home network, and while file sharing using EVEYRONE isn't the safest way to do this, I can finetune this later. The key problem at hand is what I've described above. FireFox create files with the full permissions, same way IE does.

I have Vista Ultimate and am using Thunderbird mail client. When I click a mailto link in Internet Explorer I get this error message: "Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed". I have reset my default programs, uninstalled and reinstalled Thunderbird, and switched my default mail client to Windows Mail and still the same result. On searching the web I can only find solutions for Windows XP, Outlook and Outlook Express. Anyone know what the deal is with Vista and Thunderbird rendering this error? And BTW I have the same setup on another computer and the mailto links work fine.

Save On Flash Drive "You Need Permission To Perform This Action."

How am I supposed to give myself permission to do this? I've already tried going to Internet options and making sure it is on default... and it is. Please help, not sure what else to do.

Folder Delete "You Need Permission To Perform This Action."

The problem is a message that I get when I attempt to delete the folder - "You need permission to perform this action." Permissions all show full control. I'm attempting to delete it with an administrator account and I've attempted to run MS Explorer as administrator and still can't delete the folder. What is odd to me is I can delete the folder if I log off and log back in again as the same user. Is there anything I can do so I don't have to go through the process of logging off and back in again?

When I try to delete them I get "You need permission to perform this action". Here's what I have tried so far:

UAC is off.

Right clicking the folder and giving full control on the security tab Using the hidden administrator account (net user administrator/active:yes in cmd run as administrator)

I have been through numerous Google searchesand found nothing useful.

The Recommended Updates Was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 For Windows Vista For X64-systems (11,8MB).

Aug 19, 2008

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition Dutch Version, updated with SP1 and all the patches/updates until today. However, I have encountered two problems lately, that might be related. During one of the last Windows update sessions, one of the recommended updates was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista for x64-systems (11,8MB).

The update downloaded succesfully, created a restore point, but then during installation of Search 4.0, windows update stops and announces an update fail error:

Failed: 1 update
Errorcode: 800F0900

I've been googling this particular error code in combination with KB940157, but it doesn't bring up any entries. Then later on, I discovered that when I go into the Windows Components window (via Control Panel, Add/remove software), the entire windows stays blank (first it says "Wait a few moments..."). This only lasts a few seconds then shows a complete empty window.
