I was thinking about using the recovery dvd's for my laptop. i use this pc for work and have thousands of email, onenote, vpn....etc. i understand this will erase my hard drive and one of the problems i am having is "windows back up" doesnt work (ironic)... is there some sort of way i can back up my computer then reinstall vista(use recovery dvd) and transfer that backup to my laptop. If i create an image with back up software will that just reinstall all the corrupted files (registry..etc)...is there anyway to reinstall vista without erasing the hard drive?

Aug 13, 2009I have attempted all the following to install. I corresponded with digital river who forwarded me three files for the Vista upgrade.After downloading via FireFox I begin the installation. Once the installation begins I get the following error message: "Cannot extract Windows Vista Setup to your hard drive. Please ensure that you can create files and folders in the same folder where VistaSetupPrep.exe was downloaded." Now, I have troubleshooted this way:
I have unprotected the folder that contains all the files and unclicked the Read Only option. I have attempted to copy and paste the install.wim and the boot.wim files into the source folder that is created after I have begun the install, as someone in the Microsoft Answers Forum suggested. I also tried to burn it to a DVD, which gave me another error message.
This is extremely frustrating as I purchased this OS on discount thinking it is an affordable alternative. I can also see that I am not the only one with this issue. So it would be nice if someone from Microsoft found a solution to this issue. I currently have Windows XP Media Center Edition SP 3.

Mar 23, 2008My question is how come when a hard drive (Maxline III Model: 7V250F0 SATA) is initialized within windows XPPro and partitioned/ formatted and can be used in XPPro, when WindowsVista Home Basic on the same machine does not recognized the drive except in disk manager it shows the drive without drive letters? I have XPPRO installed on drive 0 and Vista Home Basic on drive 3 in a dual boot with vista boot pro. Noticed the bios has it as a master drive along with another drive on an IDE which is a master too? I tried initializing in vista without any luck? So I tried using after initializing with XPPro and Vista Home Basic wants to load drivers for hardware but can't find any? I am confused! Anyway the drive was out of a Dell computer originally (possibly an OEM drive?) and I used a utility from their web sight to erase the drive. Then I did as mentioned above............

Missing Hard Drive With Windows Ultimate
Mar 23, 2008I'm running a desktop system with Windows Vista Ultimate. I have encountered
a problem that I know is being experienced by other Vista users; I'm hoping
there is a workaround. I have an internal 1 TB Hitachi hard drive (not the C drive). This desktop system is only about six months old, and ever since I first acquired it I found that this internal hard drive would go missing after putting Vista into Sleep or Hibernation mode. Restarting the system would always enable Vista to recognize the internal 1 TB hard drive again.
However, about two weeks ago this temporary fix wasn't working anymore -- restarting Vista didn't enable the 1 TB internal drive to be recognized. It's been missing ever since. And yet this drive is working properly according to Device Manager (Including having the latest driver). Doing a Google search has produced a few other threads on the web where Vista users are also experiencing missing hard drives. Supposedly this situation is to be directly addressed by Microsoft with the release of Service Pack 1. Unfortunately, I need access to my internal hard drive now, not weeks from now when Service Pack 1 is finally released.

Jul 30, 2008went to get a new laptop and founds a nice mew Toshiba laptop (have to check model number) got the laptop home an started up fine worked fine also got thee system online and with all the anti virus set up (used the 90 day Norton trial) worked fine next day I stared the laptop up and the worked fine for a wile then went into a full crash with nothing responding forced a reboot look fine bios came up vista went to load the bar stuck and then restarted then kept doing this and no hard drive activity left the machine
and still stayed like this tried restore and start-up recovery as the pc was loading in safe mode the laptop did start the reload of the hard drive after that said was successful rebooted and did not want to load up ,took the pc back and checked the machine out they could not fix there machine the man told me the machine was not going to work and sated to fill out a Toshiba doa form stating that hard drive failure was the cause, that left me the option to change the laptop or get my money back and chose the get money back to see what i could get else were still looking I am thinking of getting a Sony vairo instead

May 18, 2010I have a Vista home system. I recently did a windows registry back up on my PC (Cleanmypc) i have about 20 gigs of zipped files in the back up folder. Since then my hard drive died. I have two questions.
1. What is actually backed up in this system ?
2. Can i transfer the data (Zipped files) to a new hard drive without any issue using the cleanmypc software.

Feb 28, 2009I'm having a very strange problem with my External Hard Drives (I have 2). What happens is that I am unable to open either of the external Hard Drives in 'Computer' by double clicking them. It just doesn't do anything. But when I right click and select 'Open' it says: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I have checked the security details for the drives and I should be able to access them just fine. But here is where it gets weird. I can right click and select 'Explore' and it will open up like normal and I can browse the folders just fine! I used to be able to access these Hard Drives just fine before, but then they just went like this and I have no idea why. Since it happened to both Hard Drives simultaneously, I figure it is a Vista problem and not related to the specific drives.
Other symptoms are that the icon for the drives no longer shows up in 'Computer', although the name and disk space turn up fine. Also, I've noticed that the drives are operating much slower than usual, nearly a tenth of the normal read/write speed.
Hard Drive Crashed, Find Inbox In Windows Mail
Mar 31, 2009My computer crashed and I currently have my hard drive set up externally to copy the information off of it onto another computer. I was using Windows Mail that came with Vista on my old computer when it crashed. I've been able to salvage my data, but would like to find my messages stored in my Inbox in Windows Mail. I cannot open the program (Windows Mail) currently, but will be able to open it when my new computer arrives. For now, I'm copying needed files off my hard drive and storing them temporarily on my children's computer. I do not know what folders from Windows Mail, or Windows perhaps, that I need to save in order to hopefully open my saved inbox messages.

Mar 26, 2008I am trying to do a clean install on a newly built system but Vista can not see my SATA hard drive. I have a Seagate 7200 barracuda 320 GB SATA HD and a Giga-byte P35 Mobo. Not knowing if it was a Vista issue or a hardware issue, I put in a XP installation disk and XP could recognize the drive. I stopped the install and tried loading some drivers off of the disk from Gigabyte. Should I Partition? (new To Vista With New 750 Gig Hard Drive)
Mar 21, 2009I am getting a new HP today with a 750gig hard drive. Vista Home Premium. 64 bit SP1. I've never used Vista. I seem to recall hearing in the past that partitioning a drive so large is better than having it be just one 750 gig unit. If so, I want to partition it optimally from the outset. So:
1) SHOULD I partition my 750 gig C drive?
2) If so, how is it done? Do I go to Computer > Manage > Disk Management like in XP? (I've never used Vista.)
If I should do it, will I need to reformat to NTFS or will it already be NTFS? And should I use the "Quick format" option or the slow version? (Never did know the difference when I reformatted external drives, but I used the fast version.)
On my external drives I erased everything and then reformatted. Obviously I won't want to do that here, as it comes loaded with the operating system and MS Works, etc. So how do I partition without erasing files?

Apr 7, 2008I installed Vista Ultimate about a year ago, and a few months later also installed Suse 10.2 and I know dual boot, GRUB handling the boot. I have no problems whatsoever running either OS, and they are both installed on the same physical disk, just different partitions. Now, here's the strange thing: If I open disk management, the C-drive is visible and listed as healthy. If I run the Vista backup app, it can't even see the hard drive it itself is Installed on! A while back I had problems installing a patch, and through Googling it started having suspicions that the patch problem could have to do with my dual boot setup (the patch had to do with the disc encryption thing), so I thought I'd restore Vista's boot record and delete the Suse partitions, but when I start from the DVD and select repair, it can't see the OS.

Mar 23, 2008i am trying to connect two old seagate ide 80 gb hard drives ( barracuda 7200.7 and ST380020A ) to my dell inspiron 1300 laptop with windows vista home premium. i am using an ide to usb cable. first thing that happens when i connect either is that 'safely remove hardware' icon pops up in the system tray and then disappears after a few seconds. i managed to double-click it a few times before it disappears and go into the properties of the 'USB Mass Storage device' and at first it says this device is working properly, then the mouse pointer turns into an hour sign and the following msg replaces that : Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45) To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer. Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.
it then disappears also from the Safely Remove Hardware popup box all together. the drives do not appear in my computer, device manager or computer management. i have rebooted many times, tried all the different jumper settings, and even deleted the INFCACHE1.inf file as mentioned in one of the newsgroups fixes i found after hours of googling. still i cannot seem to access the drives at all.
Vista Hard Drive Unusual Problem
Jan 26, 2010I haven't been able to figure out something with the Vista Home Premium 64 bit operating system.
My other non-booting hard disk (IDE) of 300 gb recently died, so I got a SATA Segate Barracuda 1.5TB disk. It is working fine. I formatted it without problems. Under the properties box it shows Capacity: 1.36TB, and the drive is indexed for faster searching. As far as I know too, there is nothing set up on it for System Restore.
However, I am now running into a very strange problem copying files to this disk. Even with 1.36TB on it, I can only copy up to 131 gb of data to it. After that Vista refuses to copy anything. I am very suspicious about the 131 gb limit that I am finding, that must be significant. I have also tried to search in the BIOS choices, but couldn't find anything there. It is an ASUS M4A79 Deluxe motherboard, with 5 SATA ports, which I am using #1, #2, #3, and #5, if that matters. I thought about switching the SATA cable for the Seagate drive from #5 to #4, but since Vista sees it as 1.36TB it seems that there wouldn't be any difference.
