The link below is to the computer I'm on the verge of buying. But, I'm not sure if it will be good for gaming now and in the future. I am torn between 64 bit and 32 bit. What I was thinking to do was to format my hard drive and reinstall 64 bit when the time comes (when all the bugs are worked out). However, I'm at Ohio State, and they're policy is that you have to totally reformat your hard drive before you'll be able to use the wireless internet. What format is the best for backup? I have heard that FAT32 is good and it also means it can be read by OSX if the need ever arose (could be useful because my flat mate is a mac user).

Even though I?ve not had any previous problems with the drive, as its worked fine, when I installed the drive when I was using Windows XP, I used partition magic to try and format the drive it and even that didn?t work. So am I right in thinking that there?s a problem with this drive or should I try the Windows Vista Dvd and see if formats in that before I RMA it? It shows up in Computer Management disk drives along with the WDC drive that came with. Populating the drive shows Disk: Disk 1 Type: Dynamic ond online..If I go to ..Storage and Disk Managment Disk 1 shows up as unallocated.I tried to format disk 1 /FS:NTFS /V:dorathy to no avail. I was thinking about using the recovery dvd's for my laptop. i use this pc for work and have thousands of email, onenote, vpn....etc. i understand this will erase my hard drive and one of the problems i am having is "windows back up" doesnt work (ironic)... is there some sort of way i can back up my computer then reinstall vista(use recovery dvd) and transfer that backup to my laptop. If i create an image with back up software will that just reinstall all the corrupted files (registry..etc)...is there anyway to reinstall vista without erasing the hard drive?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been fighting with this computer all day, and posting here is my last resort. Basically, this morning one of the users here attempted to use her Outlook profile and the computer could not find it. Upon investigating, it turned out that her AppData folder had been redirected erroneously. On this particular machine, for some reason, the User Shell Folders which we had redirected to our server RS-NS1 (for backup and DR purposes), kept redirecting to our OLD server RSSERVER. I set the correct locations once more and restarted, however this time when I attempted to log in, it showed "User name or password are incorrect". Confused, I tried again, then tried the domain Administrator account, my own domain account, and a few others...none of them worked. Thinking maybe I screwed up the registry, I did a System Restore, but that didn't fix it. I undid that SR and did a new one (this time to the checkpoint this morning prior to the user's first login) and nothing happened then either.
I have since re-joined the computer to the domain, attempted a Startup Repair (which I already knew wouldn't find anything...the computer was starting up fine), and then I stumbled across the local admin account I created when I was first configuring the computer. Imagine my surprise when that account logged in just fine. Using it, I discovered that there were 13 items listed in the Device Manager under Network Devices. The first one listed was the NIC, the second was a duplicate except for "Teefer2 Miniport" at the end. Teefer2, apparently, is a service run for Symantec Endpoint Protection 11's firewall (which we do not use, we have a separate hardware firewall in place). I removed the NIC driver and rebooted...now the NIC is the ONLY item listed in the Network Devices section, but the problem is still here. Any advice before I yank my hair out and do a format/OS reinstall?
The Hard Drive LED light on my Sony Vaio keeps blinking EVERY SECOND. When it's really quiet I can hear it too, it's constantly writing. Constantly. I did my research - read all the threads on the net and so far I have disabled:

I have uninstalled google desktop.
The system is totally virus and spyware free, and the anti-virus is not scanning (schedule scan disabled). All Vista updates are installed. Nothing has helped. I've run out of things to disable. I'm running Vista Business SP1, Dual Core 2.2 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM.
i just bought My Book Essential 1 TB today... and when i got home i plug it and it works just fine but its bothering me that the HDD type is FAT32 .. so i format it and try to change it to NTFS.. but somethings happen and boom the electric in my apartment was down... and so when the electric back i want to format it again but i can't... there drive is detected but with no space detail... it says "Windows can't format Drive H: - Check to see that the disk and drive are connected properly, make sure that the disk is not read-only, and then try again.
For more information, search Help for read-only files and how to change them" when i open the Disk Management from (My COmputer > Manage) it seems it's already a volume.. but the weird thing there is no space detail.. and i cant erase the volume ... i've tried using diskpart but i can't do nothing because there is no volume and i can't erase the disk... no luck with fsutil cause its not ntfs... I havent tried 3rd party software and i havent tried it on other computer (don't have other computer right now) and WDC didnt give live cd for formatting because all of them was in the drive... though i already redownload it but the program is useless..

I have bought a second hand laptop with windows vista business installed. There is a sticker on the bottom of the laptop showing the installed windows is a genius one. But part of the label gets wore out. I want to make format the hard disk and do a clean re-installation of vista again. At this stage it seems that Vista has conned me into destroying a perfectly good WD harddrive!I have created a second partion on the hard drive and I am reformatting that, as I write this, but the only formatting option seems to be this NTFS, and that is what I had already formatted the ExtHD to so I think this formatting will be to no avail!From what I can figure I need to format into FAT but I tried a quick format an ex-fat option was there, but the problem was the same. I do have the OEM number as shown in system files. I want to be able to reinstall Vista and hope that will fix the problem - but I don't want to have to reinstall any programs or lose any files already on the computer. I don't know how reformatting an actual reader would affect the device since every one at the Sony forum has only reformat their memory from the actual reader that has a reformat memory, you lose your books but all the Sony applications that runs the reader are still intact. Since I got this error, I've reformatted via the actual reader and still every time I plug my reader in my USB port, I get this error. View 9 Replies View RelatedIt's unable to either normally format any external memory devices into a FAT or FAT32 format, or unable to read it at all. I keep trying to open the device but it keeps saying that i need to format it, but because of problem 1, it can't be formated (it almost completes but the process shuts down, stating that it can't be formated). This problem has been happening for the longest time and I really need this fixed.
When I say external memory devices, i mean CDs, DVDs, Flash drives, SD cards, memory card readers. Everytime I check the disk management of these devices, it says they are Primary Partitioned (which is the normal status right?). And the only thing that seems to be the problem is the RAW file system (which I heard windows doesn't read)............
Just received a USB drive today from ebay 8 gig drive. Upon putting it into my computer it comes up as unformatted. So press format and errors at the end (unable to complete format). Then tried to format the drive via computer management in admin tools. All goes OK - 8 Gig showing. Copied 6.5 Gig onto it to test, and only some of the files work. About 2 Gig of AVI work but the others open as corrupted - same problem on my PS3. Thinking its either faulty or got a feeling its a fake 2 Gig. I need to change it to letter A. The drive is not listed under computer management: disk management. Removing the drive and reinstalling does not chhange the drive letter. Removing the driver in device manager results in installing new hardware, but with drive letter B. The Bios has several settings releated to usb devices--but nothing to do with drive letters. so I am at a loss of how to fix this---a
View 9 Replies View RelatedTwo of us have been searching for hours (forums, newsgroups, google) on how to create more then 4 partitions in on the same drive in Vista. We understand you can't have any more then 4 primary partitions. Here is how the Dell M1530 XPS came preconfigured as:
Partition 1 = OEM (Dell Utilities)
Partition 2 = Primiary (Dell Recovery)
Partition 3 = Primary (C Drive with Vista)
Partition 0 = Extended
Partition 4 = Logical
NOTE: Partition 0 or 4 is for Dell Media Direct. The volumes are:
Volume 0 E DVD-ROM
Volume 1 D Recovery
Volume C OS
Partition 3 is 220GB in size. I want to shrink it to 60GB's. This would leave about 160GB as Unallocated that I want to format and assign a drive letter to (a Volume I guess). We've also played around with DiskPart a lot, so we're pretty familiar with it, although not experts. All of the instructions on the web are the same, as none of them work with more then 4 partitions of any type.
