Two Identical Hard Driver Configure Vista Os

Feb 3, 2009

I have done this many times with XP Pro. Two entirely different hard drives. Make a dynamic file by file copy of C to D, then configure the boot menu to boot to either one. So, if C should die, boot to identical D. Has saved me and business clents many times. But alas, whatever is used as bootini in Vista seems a bit more difficult. If I have two identical hard drives with the same vista OS, how do I configure the bootini menu to boot to either one?

Access Hard Driver Win98se Acquired Vista Machine

Jun 13, 2009

I'd need to access hard drives on an old Win98se machine thru my newly aquired Vista machine. All I have at present are the two machines. I was thinking of using two cards with a crossover cable but thought it better to just ask. What recommended additions would you suggest and is this possible at all ... particularly without having to disable the vista firewall.

Hard Driver Kept Crashing

Jun 6, 2009

I am currently running Windows vista home premium 64 bit operating system, and for some strange reason I can not install anything on my computer. I thought it could be some malicious programming so I full system recovery'd my computer back to factory settings, but I still have the same problems. Before I wiped my hard drive superfetch kept crashing; which I had no idea what that was. I play World of warcraft and kept critical error'ing and it said it could not read certain files in its program. I believe it might be a hardware problem as in my hard drive but was thinking

Two Identical Machines: One Offered SP1, The Other Not

I have a strange situation. I purchased two identical machines on the same day 2 months ago for replacements in a small medical office. Both are running Vista Home Premium. Every day during bootup, one machine is offered SP1 via Windows update, while the other is not. Both machines have the same software loaded, set up the same (except computer name and user names etc).

2 Identical Monitors And Different Resolutions

Jul 28, 2008

I have two identical Syncmaster 205BW Monitors running on my 9800GX2 card. I want to run at 1400 x 1050 as that looks the best and font size.

BUT monitor 1. has a top available resolution of 1400 x 1050 at highest 32 Bit (slider is hard to the right). This is the Main Monitor.
Monitor 2 does NOT have 1400 x 1050 available and I have to run it at 1440 x 900 and there are more available higher settings right thru to 1680 x 1050.

Note when these same two monitors were connected to my previous 8800GTX on a Vista 32 bit system, they both ran fine at 1400 x 1050.

I have latest monitor inf from Samsung.

I note that in Control Panel/Personalize/Display settings, there is a ghost 3rd small monitor icon showing as 'Default Monitor' and it is greyed out. Not sure how to remove this or if it has any bearing?

75,000 Identical Entries In Event Log

Feb 18, 2009

Every three or four days I review my Event Log. The log for two days ago on my laptop (Vista Home Premium SP1) system has approximately 75,000 entries that are identical, all logged over a four-second period. The entry reads:

(Event 51)
An error was detected on device DeviceHarddisk2DR2 during a paging
operation.

According to MS, if this occurs on a primary drive (like "C" I'm guessing - they don't say, actually) the drive could be failing. They go on to say "Otherwise, no user action is required". The error cites "harddisk2" so unless MS has decided that drive numerations start a "2", I'm guessing this is something having to do with an external drive; possibly one of my USB drives. What is strange is that I haven't plugged in an any drives for five days or so.

Should I just mark this down as some sort of Vista glitch, as I am tempted to do? Or, is this just one more thing to worry about? I do know what paging operations are, and why they sometimes fail, but this particular set of entries puzzles me.

Configure Windows For Newbies

Apr 26, 2008

After a couple weeks of pulling my hair out and threatening to go find that hammer, I found this site and the 200+ Tutorials. Below are the steps I took to get to a stable, working Vista Home Premium 32 bit. There is no new information here. Everything came from the tutorials and threads I read here before starting.

1. I made a backup of everything I wanted to save. Fortunately, most of my files were already on DVD’s from the old computer. I burned my Anti Virus, Anti Spyware and all the device driver updates I had downloaded during the ‘Insanity Times’. I also downloaded several of the Tutorials so that I could access to them without an Internet connection. I then unplugged my Internet connection. I used the recovery feature to reset the computer to its original factory installation.

2. After reboot, I did steps one and two from here: Speed Up the Performance of Vista

3. I next installed my Anti Virus & Anti Spyware. When setting up the AV, I set real time protection on and email scanning off. The Anti Spyware doesn’t load at start up as I let Windows Defender do the real time scanning. When installing programs I right click and choose ‘Run as Administrator’ rather than just clicking on the setup file. Some suggestions for anti virus and anti spyware here: Free Software List for Vista

4. I then rebooted. While the computer was shutting down to reboot, I plugged the Internet connection back in......................

'Configure UAC', MS The Value In Grannular Configuration?

Mar 23, 2008

Is there a way to grant an applicatoin the right to execute now and forever more? An app that I use 3,4,10,15 times a day triggers an UAC prompt. I understand that the app should be written in a different manner so that it does not need Admin rights. Until it is re-written, I do not want to be prompted __EVERY__ time i launch it. Is this possible?

Since I think I already know the answer (but I am wrong far more than I would like to admit which is why i am posting), Why not? and to answer the first 3 arguments against:

1) I don't care that the app should be written differently. It is not written differently now, and I need to run it now.

2) It's not really a security hole to whitelist an app(s) - UAC is still running. Firewall is still running. User is still a least priveledge account, etc.

3) i haven't thought far enough to have 3 counter arguments.

Can someone explain to MS the value in grannular configuration? 'Configure UAC' should have a few more options than Turn On / Off.

How Can Properly Configure Network For Sharing.

This is a question about both xp and vista to a lesser extent. I can't find the proper english group for xp netowrking in the newsgroup list so I am posting here. Let us say the 6 workstations are

1) alice (xp)
2) john (xp).....

Lets look at alice. What I have done is to create 5 user accounts (limited) on alice called john, mary, jack, roger and morgan. I have set their password all to network. ****QUESTION****: In order to share a folder(s) to these other 5 workstaions do I have to manually set up each user on the alice machine or is there a way to see these users of the other machines listed in the share permissons and just select them without having to set up physical accounts for them on the alice machine....
