Configure Hard Wired Network Connection Using Static IP Address?

Dec 16, 2009

Since there are no Windows 7 newsgroups I hope my post is appropriate here. If not, please let me know where I should post Win7 questions. I have a new Dell netbook running Windows 7 Starter Edition. I need to configure a hard wired network connection using a static IP address and I can not find where to do so. What I am looking for is the equivalent of Control Panel | Network Connections in XP.

Assign Static IP To Both Wired And Wireless Adapters?

Feb 6, 2009

In my XP days I would assign each of my laptop's network adapters (wired and wireless) its own static IP address. I did this to make it easier to manage things like opening certain ports when using the laptop for gaming over the wired connection only.

Now that I have an all Vista home network consisting of a laptop and a desktop both with Vista Home Premium I am running into trouble assigning these static IPs on the laptop. The primary connection is the wireless and i use the wired connection to game or to transfer files across the network. When I go to set the IP on the wired connection I get the message: "Warning: Multiple default gateways are intended to provide redundancy to a single network such as and Intranet or the Internet. They will not function properly when the gateways are on two separate, disjoint networks (such as one on your intranet and one on the Internet). Do you want to save this configuration?".................

How Set Up Static Ip Address?

Can some explain in LAYMANS terms how to set up a static ip address in vista and are there any bad implications in doing so? The reason is I live in the UK and wish to join a UK based internet forum/club but they will only accept UK based ip addresses which apparently mine is not.

Static IP Address: Cannot Connect?

Dec 25, 2008

I have a Static IP Address. And there is a website I want to access, but it can never connect. So I contacted the administrator, and he says I am IP banned from the site, and promptly blocks me. So I figure the best way to get around this was to change my IP Address. I've tried manually changing it, using tons of methods. I've even used the cmd method, but when I type ipconfig/release it gives me an error and says that "This action requires elevation" whatever the hell that means. I'm 13 and I am in no position to be calling ISP and asking them to change my IP address. So you guys are basically my last hope. How do I change my Static IP?

DSL Static IP Can Not Connection

Jan 4, 2008

I have solved some of my woes. I will do my best to describe the rest of them to you. What I am trying to do is reconnect my Xbox 360 to my PC. I had this working for three months(since I have had the 360), then, I had to do a clean install of Vista. Well, almost a clean install, I quess it is a re-install, because if left a lot of the stuff I already had, just cleaned out my email and such. Now, I can connect my 360, and the pc recognizes it when I am in WMP 11 and look at the media sharing. Here's the problem. I can either connect to Xbox Live or I can remove the network setting in the 360 and I can browse the files on my pc through the 360, but I can't do both like I could before. It's one or the other. I am using a Netopia 2240 dsl modem/router. I have not changed any settings in the router whatsoever.

After I did a reinstall however, I could not access some SSL pages or recieve email( I could send ok, just not recieve). I fixed this by rolling back the driver for my Network card. The problem between the 360 and my pc existes only after the reinstall. Heres something else, win I try and ping my router it times out. And, I cant access it through 192.168.1.1. When I use the cmd prompt and look at ip's, they are all static. Shouldn't I have dynamic? One last thing, when I click on my Broadband connection and click on details, next to dhcp, it says NO. However, on my LAN connection it says Yes??? PS- can someone tell me how to take a screen shot so I can post/better explain what I am doing.

As things stand right now: PC 1 - Windows Vista Business. Firewall disabled. DHCP address from Linksys wired DSL router. PC 2 - Windows XP Pro. Firewall disabled. DHCP address from Linksys wired DSL router. Both machines are in the same workgroup.

The XP machine can ping the router, ping the Vista machine by IP address, access the internet, access file shares on the Vista machine
by ip address (\addressshare). It cannot ping the Vista machine by name. The Vista machine can ping the router and access the internet. It cannot ping the XP machine by name or address (request timed out).

Wireless Connects Even If Wired Connection Is Available

May 26, 2008

I am running Vista SP1. When I turn on the computer with an ethernet cable attached and a wireless connection available, Vista will connect both the wired and wireless connections. This leads to a conflict and networking will not work until I turn off one of the connections. I then need to manually turn off the wireless, at which point the wired connections works. This did not happen on this computer when I ran XP.

I thought this might just be an idiosyncricy of this computer since I have not seen any discussion about the problem but I got ths same thing happening when trying to troubleshoot another laptop.

Old Static IP Network Firewall Blocking

Mar 23, 2008

I have been trying to connect a new Vista laptop to an old static IP4 network. The Vista firewall is blocking me. It is a public IP address (I'm not sure what that means), which apparently is the problem. My IP address starts with 207.191... Does that make sense to anyone? I need to know how to unblock this address or just take down the firewall all together. I'll only be connected to that network for a few hours a week, so temporarily removing the firewall wouldn't be too bad.

1. Yes, I need x64 to break the RAM barrier on this computer.
2. It's a laptop, and I don't need more cards to remove when I undock it.
3. Two networks at a university: one from the school with autherntication, and the other goes to my small in-room network.

LAN Setup Temporary Wired Ethernet Network

Feb 6, 2009

I provide the technical support for an international photographic competition and this involves setting up a temporary wired Ethernet network to interconnect several laptops during our entry processing or judging sessions. This network uses a small 5-port Fast Ethernet switch and fixed IP addresses.

I only used laptops running Windows XP and everything was fine. I'm now trying to add a new laptop running Vista Home Premium and am hitting problems due to my total lack of any previous Vista experience. I have managed to set the IP address on the Vista laptop but it cannot 'see' any other machines on the network and the XP laptops cannot gain access to the Vista machine.

64x Wired Network Dropping Off On Large No Of File Transfer.

Feb 18, 2009

I have a Vista 64x workstation since Nov 08 which has been fine until recently. It has started having network problems when accessing large numbers of files from remote locations. I have a readyNAS network storage device with a number of shares which are mounted as network drives on the PC, wired ethernet. Vista is set up as a private network and set to trust the LAN. The readynas is flawless when accessed from other XP and Vista machines on the LAN.

Recent example, tried loading on photos from a camera, approx 700 files. Went fast at first, but over 300 files, copying would slow to a crawl - 16Kb. While this is happening, other LAN access and internet access becomes intermittent. If I use picasa, which accesses all photos on the remote drive, it'll work for a while but then crawl, only in this case the whole machine slows down. I've tried disabling auto-tuning but that made no difference.

If I have two identical hard drives with the same vista OS, how do I configure the bootini menu to boot to either one?

How Can Properly Configure Network For Sharing.

Dec 9, 2009

This is a question about both xp and vista to a lesser extent. I can't find the proper english group for xp netowrking in the newsgroup list so I am posting here. I have 6 workstaions. a mix of xp and vista. I am hoping that I can configure the vista machines in the same way I am doing xp. This is a workgroup environment not a AD. Let us say the 6 workstations are

1) alice (xp)
2) john (xp).....

Lets look at alice. What I have done is to create 5 user accounts (limited) on alice called john, mary, jack, roger and morgan. I have set their password all to network. ****QUESTION****: In order to share a folder(s) to these other 5 workstaions do I have to manually set up each user on the alice machine or is there a way to see these users of the other machines listed in the share permissons and just select them without having to set up physical accounts for them on the alice machine....
