Which Disk Image Creation Software Is Good For Vista: Fat32 Or NTSF File System?
Mar 23, 2008
In previous years I used Ghost to create the image of my harddrive. It was simple, easy procedure and very fast. I booted up computer to the command prompt and restored harddrive in few minutes!!! But it was FAT32 system. Now, with Vista I do not have a choice but to use NTSF file system. Which program offers the most features for disk image creation? I know it will be impossible for me to restore image from command boot option, but what the options I have? Can I for example take the harddrive to another computer and restore the image in there? Or create bootable CD (DVD?) and restore the image that way? Or I have to first install Windows and then restore?

I have a new PC with Vista Home Premium x64 and I would like to make reinstallation or recovery disks. The machine has a program to create recovery disks but that fails each time - the DVD writer is working OK as I have made a few other disks. I should really return it I suppose but I would rather avoid the hassle - the PC itself is working fine and I have moved my stuff over from my old machine. From reading the tutorials here I understand I can't make a complete backup image as its not the Ultimate/Business version.

Last month I got a HP laptop and I forgot to take recovery disks.
Due to some problems, my OS got corrupted and so I re installed vista
ultimate x64 in my laptop. I have installed all the necessary driver
softwares. Can I create a recovery parition or recovery disks with the
current setup? If yes, how? Also how many times can I create recovery
disks? Is it a one time process?

I know about FAT32, but I know little about NTFS. Assuming both hard drives are not "fragmented". If a large (200MB) file is deleted, is it more likely to be overwritten (space it occupied on the hard disk is overwritten) on a FAT32 hard disk compared to a NTFS? Remove "ine" from my email address

I just installed a new Hitachi HDD and restored my disc image to it. My original disk had three partitions, the pqservice partition, the active OS partition (C drive) and a data partition (D drive). But I only chose to restore the OS and the data partitions. Now when I view the new disk via disk management, the labeling of the active partition is unusual; there is no volume name listed nor file system, and the free space is shown as 100%. Also, the status shows an EISA configuration. However, under explorer properties for the drive, things look a bit different, with the label and system type correct. What is causing the discrepancy and how to remedy it?I just now also noticed that I no longer have 4gb of ram... I haven't removed anything, but only 2gb are showing in system properties and in the BIOS???

I got this message when trying to convert my HDD in Command prompt: Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode. I did get it working after I did Run as administrator and it worked, but it takes ages formatting........The external HDD I was converting is 500GB, due to how long it was taking I cancelled it. Does anyone know how I can do a quick fat32 formatting or conversion in vista?

Anyone know of a good free Cloning program that is 64bit compatible? for Vista ultimate being upgraded to win7 for the specific purpose of making an exact restore-able image of the HD. That can be copied to a reformatted harddrive after a major colaps of the os or virus damage? I also want to be-able to do a periodic erasure of said hd for security and privacy purposes. which I would do before formatting the HD again. I like to download a try a lot of free stuff and as you know it can mess your system up good and proper, to the point, its better to start over from a cloned image of factory settings that are up to date .

When I run Windows Vista's Disk Cleanup program, I get this list of "Files to delete" window listing showing Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin...and one that is really BIG. It reads "Per user queued Windows Error Repo..." I can't expand the window to read it all. The size is 104GB! (as in Gigabytes). There is also a couple of other files with similar names : per user archived Windows Error Repo...System archived Windows Error Repo..., System queued Windows Error Repo..., My question is can I delete these files safely so I can reclaim some disk space without messing up anything?

I thought i'd give 64 bit a try, what a bad decision it's terrible. I've had nother but blue screeens and other problems with it.
Think i'll revert back to the good old trustworthy 32 bit, never had any problems with it.

I have a need to install 4 systems of Vista on a single machine (4 partitions of my main system hard disk). Given that Vista always seems to see its own system drive as C, would it be possible to create my "master image" with SP1, all my drivers, utilities, system tweaks, and other "generic" applications (like Office/Acrobat etc), and then just clone this drive across to all the partitions I need to set up (on D, E, and F). Then, using VistaBootPRO, I could edit the BCD to include all the other partitions. Can anyone think of a reason this would not work?

wont open unless I put it in a folder first. I click on it and nothing
happens. I try right click > open with > and nothing happens, they will only
open if they are put in a folder. This problem only happens with image
files, all other files open with no problems.
I don't have SP1 installed on my Vista home premium.

I am wondering if you need to re-install Windows after a hard drive failure before you use a "ghost" image. I used Macrium Reflect to create it.
http://www.macrium.com/blog/2008/03/...umReflect.aspx
Do you install Windows on the new drive or just install the "ghost" image of the drive before it failed?

I have an HP laptop that came with Vista Home Premium installed.
Two drivers, the C: driver as usual and a 'D:' driver also known as "HP_RECOVERY".
Now my question is very simple and basic yet I'm baffled not figuring out a way to do it.
Is it possible to clone the image of the OS I'm running currently to that D: drive? What software do I use to do that?
I will also need to mention that the drive size is ~8GB so it's very small. If there is a way to clone the current image to that drive, i will have to extend it and make it bigger, how would you do that also

I am interested in creating a system which works like everyday DELL's/HP's/SONY's etc where the HDD has a partition with an activate image of the OS. The boot menu lets you boot from the HDD by default but if the system needs to be cleaned (restored to factory defaults) it is as simple as choosing a option in the boot menu which simply installs the OS (activated i.e. no frequent activations) which still keeping almost every file I created personally.
FYI, I am trying to build my own system using Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit and would like to keep an activated image of my system that can restored anytime I need to start all over again. EDIT: I am only interested in going back to when the image was created. Ocassionally I would like to update the image when major service packs are released and tested

I have an HP DV7 notebook that I recently added a second SATA 500 GB hard drive in the expansion bay. The purpose of the drive is to serve as a data drive. I also intend to store an image of my system disk on this internal expansion drive so that I can restore my system and apps when I am in the field. For most purposes the drive seems to be functioning normally. However, I recently noticed that, without my instructions, HP Updates were installing suipport files on my expansion disk rather than on my system disk and I have become concerned that Windows Updates may also end up on the expansion drive (so far they appear not to have done this). On further inspection in Computer Management - Disk Managment I discovered that when I put the expansion drive into the 2nd bay, my original system disk was automatically bumped from the Disk 0 position to the Disk 1 position and my expansion disk became the new Disk 0.
In Computer Managment - Disk Management the system currently looks like
Disk 0 - F: Expansion Drive - Healthy, Primary Partition
Disk 1 - C: - Healthy, System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump,Primary Partition.
If I physically pull out the F: drive from the machine the C: drive returns to the Disk 0 position. I am concerned that my system and application updates are going to get splattered across two drives when I want them to remain on the original C: drive. I can find no way in BIOS or Computer Management - Disk Management to assign the Disk and physically swapping the drives makes the system disk unbootable. Am I at risk of splattering my Window updates across two drives? Should I instruct Vista to regard my system disk C: as Disk 0 and how to I do this?

When I try to print a web site image to an Adobe PDF file, Vista states that for security purposes the pdf file will be placed in a "virtual" temporary internet file folder, then opens the virtual folder on C drive, but then doesn't save the file in the folder. I've been able to work around the problem by disabling all user account control security, but there has to be an easier way. I'd like to save files without security forcing them to a
specific folder.

upgrade HD from 60G to 250G without having to reinstall all files and programs. Windows Complete PC Restore cannot see DVD with backup image file
1. Backed up C: using Windows Complete PC Backup. (6 DVDs no errors.)
2. Removed old HD and inserted new.
3. Booted Windows Vista install DVD. (I proceeded to partition HD but did not complete the install.)
4. From Windows Recovery Environment, I chose Windows Complete PC Restore.
5. Inserted Backup image DVD disc1.
6. When it looked for the location of the image it couldn't find it so it fails.

I have Acronis True Image and before I went the dual boot system route (XP + Vista x64), I made an image of my XP system but now that I am comfortable with both OS's, I would like to know if Acronis can make an image of my drive including both systems?
Before attempting to do this on my own and botching the already good image I have, I would like to hear it from the Gurus so... what say you? Oh, also, I have heard that Acronis can do this but nobody specified if I should start Acronis in Vista or in XP and that is another thing that baffles me. It shouldn't matter where I start the image process but making sure is my first priority since I tend to screw up things fairly quick when I go out guns blazing (so to speak!)

I am having a time and a half trying to create recovery DVD's. I keep getting the error message that "this computer does not have a drive capable of creating cds and dvds". I definitely have a dvd burner so I know that's not the actual problem. From the research I've done, I think I may have uninstalled some DVD softward that was pre-installed on my Windows Vista HP Pavilion TX2110us laptop. Does anyone know how to fix this problem. I desparately need to re-install Windows and I don't really want to do it without having the created recovery dvds.

before this i try to install vista on my machine. and for sure in that time we need to create user (adminstrator) before we start using the vista. after that, i try to keep an image for my vista because if anything happen, it will be more easier to me. then, i try to image on my machine again. but, there already have i user which mean the administrator that i create during the 1st installation. so, when i do the image, i need to put the different user name because the user name that i try to create already exist. so that will create 2 different user when imaging is done. is there any way how to delete the 1st user? so when imaging is done, it will only 1 user (new user) and the windows will be automatically show the desktop. (i know how to delete from control panel>user account). actually this is for my client.

I changed the Boot sequence to CD first, then HDD. Everything ran fine and vista seemingly loaded perfectly. After moving some files from my backup drive back onto my main one and installing some drivers, I was asked to restart my computer (for the drivers) so I did. Remembering that the boot sequence was still set on CD first, and since my driver CD was still in the drive, I decided to set the boot sequence back to the way I had it with XP: HDD and then CD. After doing this I quit BIOS and tried to boot, but I kept getting a message saying: DISK BOOT FAILURE. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.
So I restarted the computer again, this time with my Vista CD in the drive, and again, the computer wouldn't boot and told me to enter a boot disk. Not knowing what to do, I went back into BIOS and changed the boot sequence back to CD first, then HD. After doing this, and restarting with the Vista CD in the drive, my computer booted up with no problems whatsoever. I tried reinstalling Vista (twice), reformatting the target hard drive, changing the boot sequence around, pretty much everything I could think of......
