First off, why is there no microsoft group for windows 7? Secondly, and my question is windows 7 based, I want to create an image of my old XP computer & install it on my Windows 7 computer, so it will run under virtual PC. Is this possible?

So that if you have say MS-DOS 7.1 running on virtual pc and want to add SIMCITY 2000 to its virtual hardrive. Then you could run SIMCITY 2000 from dos on windows vista. And once simcity 2000 is added to the virtual hardrive how do I execute SC2000.exe from dos or dos shell.

While trying to move a file in an .iso image on a virtual drive, Vista said it needed permission to preform the action. I clicked the allow button, and it seemed to continue, only to tell me moments later that I needed permission. I looked into the issue, and discovered that the folders were both read-only, an attribute I've tried to remove several times. Any ideas? And yes, I am logged in as the admin.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to print a web site image to an Adobe PDF file, Vista states that for security purposes the pdf file will be placed in a "virtual" temporary internet file folder, then opens the virtual folder on C drive, but then doesn't save the file in the folder. I've been able to work around the problem by disabling all user account control security, but there has to be an easier way. I'd like to save files without security forcing them to a
specific folder.

i m configuring IIS on windows vista home premium 32 bit. when i type inetmgr in run window, IIS opens, but i dont see any Add virtual directory option to create a virtual directory, I only see, Add Website, Refresh and properties options. I dont know what excatly happened. how to configure IIS from scratch. I am student learning .net and installed VS2005 on my laptop and want to create a virtual directory.

I must also maintain XP on a dualboot partition for legacy applications compatibility issues. My plan is to do a clean install of Vista Premiun updrade, then use Virtual PC to create a virtual XP OS partition using my OEM XP disk. My question is, will this: Does this create a license issue?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am interested in creating a system which works like everyday DELL's/HP's/SONY's etc where the HDD has a partition with an activate image of the OS. The boot menu lets you boot from the HDD by default but if the system needs to be cleaned (restored to factory defaults) it is as simple as choosing a option in the boot menu which simply installs the OS (activated i.e. no frequent activations) which still keeping almost every file I created personally.
FYI, I am trying to build my own system using Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit and would like to keep an activated image of my system that can restored anytime I need to start all over again. EDIT: I am only interested in going back to when the image was created. Ocassionally I would like to update the image when major service packs are released and tested
Am I correct in assuming that, for Windows ME to run in a Virtual PC 2007 window, the Windows ME virtual disk must be located inside a disk partition that is FAT32? On a test run, I tried to install WinME on a virtual disk in a folder that was in my normal Vista partition (NTFS), and it didn't get far. I tried placing the WinME virtual disk inside an FAT32 partition, and although I didn't finish the installation process, I got that far, with the WinME instalation screen having popped up and ready for installation. One other thing: Is it possible to place the WinME virtual disk inside a logical FAT32 partition? Or must it be a primary partition?

I know I could do shortcuts on the desktop but would also like access via the "My Computer" listing. Is there anyway to create a "virtual" directory pointing to the subdirectory I want jump too and having that show up in "My Computer" ?

It runs better than XP and takes one awful beating from me and my system is on all the time with sleep engaged, waking up to perform tasks on it's own very reliably. I really do not know what people are bitching about! Just lucky I guess.
My question has to do with Virtual PC, I have tried 2004 and 2007 and have the same problem with both. In trying to install Ubuntu Linux there just not seem to be a way to get the display resolution correct. In VPC during the install VPC reports that the guest OS has selected a resolution too wide for the screen. I have tried all three resolution options in the VPC setup without sucess. XP installs in VPC perfectly. Linux and XP install perfectly in Virtual Box. Virtual Box has some issues with virtual disk size that I have been unable to resolve or I would just use Virtual Box from Sun systems. and Virtual Box runs much more quickly than VPC.
I am having problems with creating shortcuts on my desktop. when i select send to desktop (create shortcut) it comes up with the error. Windows could create the shortcut. Check to see if the disc is full.I have over 180 GB free space left. To get things to the desktop i can drag it into the tab section next to the start icon, and then drag onto desktop.But when i do this i am always required to give permission and it creates two desktop icons.i have been having problems with my catalyst control centre but i dont think they are related.

If I purchase Acronis True Image 11, then can I just image my current setup and restore the image to the WD Raptor drive or would I need to install Vista from scratch? I installed it with a dual boot putting Vista on a little partition so I could see how I liked it. No I am ready to wipe out my XP and Previous Vista and start over. However all I have is this big zip file and unpacked there is no documentation or anything for that matter on how to make a disk, or make a disk from an ISO file.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI need to know if there is anyway to specifically set Vista to allow a program to see a certain Size for Virtual memory. oracle Products require Virtual Memory to be verified before they go through installation. The problem here is that Windows Vista Paging files are not seen as Virtual memory for some reason. The system I have is set with 4000 plus mb of Paging file but when the oracle check completes it shows 0 mb available. Going to a newer version of Oracle is not an option as this is a required product for a College Course. Going back to XP is not an option since no one ever wrote XP Drivers for this hardware. I've hausted all the resources from HP and Oracle and need to try this end of the problem now.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 (system specs: laptop 2.1 Ghz core 2 duo, 4 gb RAM, 500gb hd (about half full) nvidia 8400M GS, Avira Premium Security Suite). I have had the computer for about a year running fine with 1 main admin account. Now when I need to create an account for another user I cannot create one, either admin or standard. When I create it, using either the control panel or command prompt, it creates the user picture, making the account visible on the control panel user accounts screen, and on logon screen. However, when trying to log into the new account I am greeted with the error "User profile service failed on logon. User profile cannot be loaded." The standard fix for this from various forums is to edit the registry key of the account. However, on going to regedit I see that no key even exists for the account. On further investigation I discover that no user files have been created either. I attempted a system restore, but discovered that all my past restore points were gone, and intruigingly, the computer had stopped createing 24 hour checkpoints. I cannot say for definite whether it was this issue or another one that caused system restore to mess up, as I don't check my system restore all that often. Either way, system restore is not an option. There have been mentions of a full Vista reinstall, though if at all possible I would like to avoid this.

I don't want to create some dummy account just just to log in to join the domain. View 4 Replies View RelatedRunning under Vista Home Premium SP1. I just loaded Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 (which had been running previously under WinXP with 500MB RAM) into my new PC with 3GB RAM. It would not run and requested that I increase Windows Virtual RAM! Task Manager shows RAM with Total=2939MB, Cached=2080MB, and Free=20MB. My first guess is that the problem has to do with having an administrator and five standard users, four of whom are minimum-user kids and should be removed (along with the kids).

After choosing the folders (music, video and image) that I wanted in my WMC library (on BOTH my desktop PC AND Media Center Extender), only my image files do not appear in the libraries. Under "Picture Library" (again, on both units), all folders and sub-folders which I selected are shown but contain no "items". The files which I desire to view are .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, and .bmp formats and I have converted some back and forth between formats to see if that changed anything. Can anyone steer me in the right direction on this?

1. Backed up C: using Windows Complete PC Backup. (6 DVDs no errors.)
2. Removed old HD and inserted new.
3. Booted Windows Vista install DVD. (I proceeded to partition HD but did not complete the install.)
4. From Windows Recovery Environment, I chose Windows Complete PC Restore.
5. Inserted Backup image DVD disc1.
6. When it looked for the location of the image it couldn't find it so it fails.
I’m having trouble creating a DVD from AVI files using Windows DVD Maker, When I try and Import an AVI clip into DVD Maker I get a message pop up that says file type is unsupported or corrupt, it does this for all my AVI files, My hunch is that I do not have the correct codec’s, if so does anyone know what codec’s I might need and where to get them from, DVD Maker does support AVI files right ?
My ultimate aim is just to get my AVI movie files onto DVD (for playback on a standalone player) so do not necessarily need to use DVD Maker just thought it would be easier using a built in Microsoft app
