I'm looking for a good virtual machine environment so I can test that Windows 7 on my Vista Ultimate installation -- free would be best of course! What's the best VM out there that matches these criteria?

I have a Windows Vista in an enterprize domain. This PC is running VMware supporting also some 3 virtual XP machines. In another networking card via LAN it is connected also to another XP machine, which is not a domain memeber. Problem is that while maping a local drive in the LAN PC works fine, connectng and/or maping in the virtual machines (also not members in the Vista domain) fails

My system has two raid 1 arrays - one is running on XP Professional SP3 the other one is running on Vista x64 Ultimate SP1. When I start my virtual machines (either from the Virtual PC console or when double-clicking the *.vmc files) than everything is working fine on XP and the virtual machines are booting and running as expected. However, on Vista the following is happening (and I hope somebody has an idea):
1. Starting the Virtual machines from the console leads to an immediate reboot of my host machine (I can't even see any boot screen of the virtual machine - it is like clicking start in the VPC console -- > reboot of host).

Am I correct in assuming that, for Windows ME to run in a Virtual PC 2007 window, the Windows ME virtual disk must be located inside a disk partition that is FAT32? On a test run, I tried to install WinME on a virtual disk in a folder that was in my normal Vista partition (NTFS), and it didn't get far. I tried placing the WinME virtual disk inside an FAT32 partition, and although I didn't finish the installation process, I got that far, with the WinME instalation screen having popped up and ready for installation. One other thing: Is it possible to place the WinME virtual disk inside a logical FAT32 partition? Or must it be a primary partition?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI just installed SP1 from technet recently, and decided to try my hand at virtualization for the first time today. Once Virtual PC 2007 is installed, my system BSoDs during every boot. The only way to gain access to windows is safe mode, or using the last known good state.
After using last known good state, VPC 2007 is installed, but won't work (as the drivers/services have been removed during install). I've uninstalled the remainder of VPC 2007 and rebooted; no problems. Tried again to installed VPC, and after reboot it once again BSoDs endlessly. So it stems the error is recreatable (at least on my machine).
I used to have a network that consisted of: XP Pro / XP Home / Win 98 / Win 2000. they all saw each other and I was able to move & change files between them. I have had VISTA since 9/2008. however, my vista machine sees my XP machines and the shared folders but my XP machines don't see vista when I open network folder. I have everything shared, all permissions are full. I tried again to set up network on XP machine and it sees the vista shares but not allowed access. ps don't know if it matters, vista is a laptop running wireless.

The installation was an upgrade of XpSp2.

So that if you have say MS-DOS 7.1 running on virtual pc and want to add SIMCITY 2000 to its virtual hardrive. Then you could run SIMCITY 2000 from dos on windows vista. And once simcity 2000 is added to the virtual hardrive how do I execute SC2000.exe from dos or dos shell.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a couple of Windows XP computers and a couple of Vista computers. I share files, printers etc. and it all runs great. One of the family has been away, and now they have come back their laptop won't connect to the XP computers. It connects to the Vista (and Win7) computers just fine. It must be something wrong with the laptop, as my other Vista/Win7 computers connect fine to the XP ones perfectly. I have tried disabling firewalls.
The error I get is:
Windows Cannot Access \COMPNAME
If I click diagnose I get:
"COMPNAME" is not a valid hostname
The laptop is running Windows Vista Home 32bit with SP1, using it's wireless connection. One of the XP machines is wireless, the other is wired and both are XP Pro 32bit with SP3.
I've recently put together a new computer using these parts: I've updated to Vista Ultimate SP1, run multiple disk clean ups, defrags, use CCleaner, clean the registry, defrag the registry, disabled services and have made tweaks according to the guide provided on this website and have minimal startup programs running but my boot times average around 2 minutes. For a new computer with new hardware, this seems unreasonable as many users report boot times between 30-60 seconds. What could be wrong with my computer? On the vista loading screen with the green bar, it goes through about 22 cycles.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am having is I cannot acess my laptop with windows sharing/networking.I am trying to share files and printers between my Dexktop PC and my Laptop.My desktop PC is connect to a router with DNS by cable and the laptop is connected by Wi-Fi.Both computers belong to the same workgroup(WORKGROUP).Both computers have password protected public folder and printer sharing,file sharing,network discovery,and password protected sharing enabled. Both computers do have shared files and printers.What's happening is from the laptop the desktop(RK-PC)appears and I can share files and printers flawlessly and very quickly.However from the desktop while the laptop (RYANK-MOBILE) appears it cannot be accessed at all.Also the desktop is vista 64 bit and the laptop is vista business.I saw another thread with the same problem but the response pointed to a tome of an article that explained every single facet of windows sharing down to the way the packets are constructed.To be honest I don't have time to read 100 pages on windows sharing and there is no way the problem is the complicated.None of the suggestions I read in the first five pages or so helped at all any ways.I tried changing netBIOS from default to disabled on both PCs but after doing this the result was normal function on the laptop as before but the desktop could no longer even see/discover the laptop on the network.

When trying to copy a (large - maybe 50MB +) file from the Windows 2003 Server to the Vista Machines (the Server Shared folder is mapped to a drive in Vista) - I will get an error like "There is a problem access I:igfile.txt - make sure you are connected to the Network and try again" Once in a while I will see "Error 0x8007003A" I can copy those files just fine from Windows 2003 to another Windows 2003 machine or Windows XP machines...

Using versions of LINUX causes problems with memory, concentration, attention, or thinking. A person with a moderate or severe TBI may show these same symptoms, but may also have a headache that gets worse or does not go away, repeated vomiting or nausea, convulsions or seizures, an inability to awaken from sleep, dilation of one or both pupils of the eyes, slurred speech, weakness or numbness in the extremities, loss of coordination, and increased confusion, restlessness, or agitation. Anyone with signs of TBI should remove LINUX from their machines right away. Installing a Windows based solution should help stabilize an individual and focus on preventing further injury.

When I was using 32 bit Vista I had all my Hotmail folders, newsgroups, calendar, etc. when I selected the Mail icon. Is there a way to migrate Hotmail to Windows Mail, or a way to replace Windows Mail with what I had when I was using 32 bit Vista? I had IE 8 with 32 bit and I have IE 8 with 64 bit.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI need to know if there is anyway to specifically set Vista to allow a program to see a certain Size for Virtual memory. oracle Products require Virtual Memory to be verified before they go through installation. The problem here is that Windows Vista Paging files are not seen as Virtual memory for some reason. The system I have is set with 4000 plus mb of Paging file but when the oracle check completes it shows 0 mb available. Going to a newer version of Oracle is not an option as this is a required product for a College Course. Going back to XP is not an option since no one ever wrote XP Drivers for this hardware. I've hausted all the resources from HP and Oracle and need to try this end of the problem now.
View 7 Replies View RelatedRunning under Vista Home Premium SP1. I just loaded Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 (which had been running previously under WinXP with 500MB RAM) into my new PC with 3GB RAM. It would not run and requested that I increase Windows Virtual RAM! Task Manager shows RAM with Total=2939MB, Cached=2080MB, and Free=20MB. My first guess is that the problem has to do with having an administrator and five standard users, four of whom are minimum-user kids and should be removed (along with the kids).

I shrinked the OS partition (160 GB), created new partition (40 GB) for 64 bit windows 7 ultimate. After installation of Windows 7, I cannot see the vista ultimate boot option when I boot my PC. When I boot into Windows 7, I still can see the vista partition. But instead of C: it is now displayed as E: I used the HP Recovery Disc to repair windows vista but I can only see a blank blue screen with the mouse pointer. How can I recover the vista?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a small home network. The three XP machines on the network use static IP addresses. One of the XP machines shares a printer. When I open Windows Explorer on the new Vista .Business machine and click on Network the only computer listed is the
Vista Business machine. Network Discovery is turned on on the Vista machine. The workgroup name is set to WORKGROUP on both the XP and Vista machines.
I cannot find any way to search for a computer by entering the computer name or IP address as I can in Explorer on XP. I have no idea what the search box in the upper right corner is supposed to do but it does not work. As soon as I type any character in the box it says "No items match your search."
I can ping the XP machine from a command window on the Vista machine.
If I do DIR \COMPUTERNAMEPRINT$ at the command prompt on the Vista machine the directory on the XP machine is listed.
I can see the Vista machine in Explorer on the XP machine.
I've seen information on how to do the wifi routine. How about a straight old fashioned cable connection? With XP, it was fairly simple. But now vista seems to have forgotten about that probability or need. In the network and sharing center, the wizard does not even have such a choice. All choices want either an internet connection or a connection through a router. So how do we go about setting up a LAN as we did in XP?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed vista sp2 yesterday and now my laptop won't start. it offers two options, start in repair mode or start normally. I have an 18 month old Toshiba Equiium running vista home P 32 bit. If I start normally, the microsoft logo comes up and then the screen blips blue momentarily then it goes off. If I run the repair, it scans for faults, then prompts to run a system restore. I take this option and then it takes many minutes to attempt repairs - ultimately ending with 'windows cannot repair..."
there is a log with lots of 0x0 type errors notices (which are meaningles to me) I can't even get to the point where I could elect to restore to last best save or whatever. I have all my docs backed up on a portable HD but I cannot get past this failed repair message.
I don't see a Calendar group. I have had several occasions when Windows Calendar did not pop up with appointments until a day or two had gone by and it then informs me that the appointment or whatever is x days overdue. Not very helpful obviously. My computer was on and logged in at least once on the days of the appointment. Another problem. Because of the afore-mentioned problem I put Windows Calendar in my Startup folder so I would be forced to see the calendar when I first log in. I have had a couple of crashes now apparently related to this. Once the calendar wouldn't close and the second time the computer froze after displaying the calendar; I was forced to do an unstructured shutdown; and this in turn generated raid 1 disk problems that took hours to be resolved.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI like SFC alot and it has solved a lot of problems I have had in the past with my Vistax64 machine. Latest problem is windows won't boot, can't restore, can't repair, can't safe mode, can't go to last known good... If i try to run SFC at the command prompt, i get a message that I have a pending repair, and need to reboot. However, since I cannot boot up into windows, this remains always. Is there a way to work via the command prompt to stop this pending repair, so that I can try the SFC to resolve problems I am experiencing?
View 4 Replies View RelatedHaven't gotten any response so I'll try again. A serious problem I am having with Vista calendar is that it is frequently not alerting me to appointments/events. Sometimes days will go by and abruptly I'm presented with a list of past due items. There may be a "good" reason for this happening but I can't imagine what it is as I log into the account associated with the calendar at least once a day. I have been running with the option "Reminders should show when Windows Calendar is not running" set. Also, is there any way to truly share a calendar between users on the same machine? I've used the sharing options but always end up with copies of the calendar and they don't update themselves when another user makes a change.
