View 5 Replies View RelatedJust wondering if its possible to remove old deleted programs from msconfig and other menus. I noticed in my msconfig, it still has all the apple programs like itunes and quicktime and bonjour etc in the list of services. Obviously because I got rid of them they dont work and it says unknown location but Im curious as to why they are still lurking around, since i did uninstalled them. Same with an old dvd ripper i tried out, now everytime i insert a dvd into my drive and the prompt menu comes theres still an option to use this uninstalled dvd program that has the blank icon next to it why wont it go away?

View 6 Replies View RelatedIn an effort to speed up my start up time I downloaded instructions from Microsoft's download site. One option used Windows Defender. I tried that. It changed nothing. I then tried an option using msconfig. I unchecked certain programs leaving my Anti Virus and Microsoft Operating programs. After a restart nothing had changed. The desktop still had the same icons. Maybe there is something I don't understand about start up programs. Has anyone any comments on this matter.
View 5 Replies View RelatedHow do I completely block internet access for a program on Windows Vista? Is it possible? I have already tried creating a rule on the Firewall With Advanced Security for both inbound and outbound access using the "New Rule..." wizard. I choose "Program", next I choose the program's location, next I choose "Block the connection", then I check all three profiles and finally a name for the rule. I have created testing rules for both IE and Firefox but they could still access the internet (i.e, the webpages were still loading).
The columns on the firewall control panel show that the rules are enabled, the action is block and all other columns are "Any". I thought it would completely prevent the program from accessing the internet, but it doesn't. Could you guys give me a hand? Is there a way I could make a program to not see the internet (or any network for that matter) at all?
I have ESET Smart Security and i would like to know how i would block a program like photoshop or something..anyone know how?
View 7 Replies View Relatedvista starting without explorer.exe, so have to run explorer.exe manually from the task manager to get start menu and everything running normally.... I am not sure of the right category, because this may be is related to virus, driver and system restore issues, please move in the right section, following is the system configuration and the history: also sorry for the long message, but I am really stuck here and if you could spare some time to look into this issue, I tried to provide as much history and details on the issue not just to help you understand my problem but also as a warning for other users who may run into this issue in the future.. it may be a known issue and I just happen to run into it still I would like to provide details and history of what happened, if you help me I will be in your dept for sure!! and you may ask my help anytime if you need something System configuration: my friend has a toshiba satellite latop, with vista premuim. it can preloaded on the laptop. I am not sure of the exact system model and processor but if it's relevant I can provide that info, but I suspect there is some ASUS components/drivers in the system, later I will explain why I think so, as I said I can provide system model or CPU or hardisk space but at this point I feel it's not relivant, cause it's an issue with explorer.exe right now but if you think it's required I will ask for that info, please understand I am giving support over seas from this user but we are in touch via msn and phone so if you want any additional info, even screen shots I will try to provide. History: the Problem started when she called me, and showed me a screen shot of AVG anti-virus free edition trying to remove some virususes off her computer. she said the virus came from a USB driver she borrowed from a friend. and AVG was complaining that it is not able to remove the virus because she has to buy the full AVG version. this sounded wierd, I tried to verify she is using the free AVG but I am not sure, so I ask her to uninstall AVG and try another anti-virus, first thing came to mind is avast, so I asked her to install the latest free version I think it's 4.8, but it turns out it's not compatabile with vista or her system and after some searching on the net I discover a known issue with avast/vista conflicting with some asus drivers and I suspect it is the same case, because she is also like the others reported, getting a blank screen and not able to logon. but before uninstalling avast from safe mode, I tried another suggestion ( I was not aware that avast was responsible at that point in time yet ) so I suggested she try last known good configuration. did that, but still she got blank screen again ( because avast was still there ) so I suggested she go to safe mode and try to uninstall avast ( this is after I found the issue with avast conflicing with asus drivers on some machines with vista ), after going into safe mode, she gets a view of her documents and no start button, after some questions on the phone I figured out that explorer.exe is not running, so asked her to try to run explorer.exe from the task manager, when she did that she got the start button, and was able to goto control panel and uninstall avast and then she rebooted vista. after reboot she was able to go into vista, but explorer.exe again won't run, unless she goto task manager and run it manualy everytime she reboots. I thought I'd do some research why is explorer.exe not running when the system is restarting, I thought maybe I could add it to the system startup or something, but not sure where would be the best place do to that, msconfig? or startup folder for that user? if someone can give me some advice that would be great. she already backed up her files now and ready for a re-format but I am really embarased would like to find a solution to this problem anyway, as now she think I might be an idiot for my poor selection of antivurs software, It's strange I never heard of this compatability issues and I installed avast on vista on other toshiba latops and many systems and I never had this issue ever, I suggested she try another anti-virus but she is afraid now and wants to re-format... and take her time which I understand, but in the mean time I want to try and fix this explorer.exe not runing.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWindows Vista won't start up anymore. Various problems occur during the start up that prevent it from starting up. It occurred around 3pm or 4pm today when i was just on the internet and talking with my friend on MSN and then BAM! BSOD! The PC rebooted itself and came back up, but then it began giving me a looping 'windows explorer.exe has stopped working' error. So I rebooted again.
I tried Last known good configuration and it didn't work. Gives me a flashing BSOD and the PC restarts itself. Attempts to boot into normal mode sometimes brings BSOD and sometimes just stays black before the circular Windows vista logo that should appear.......
About a few months ago I can still play games like Combat Arms, Call of Duty 4, BioShock, and Dead Space at minimal performance. But now, I reinstalled the game to play it again and it just got stuck on the Starting Screen or just plain BLACK Screen! I can still play some MMORPG like Sword of the New World: Granado Espada or the recently Closed-Beta, Luna Online just fine. I don't know what I did wrong with my Dell XPS Laptop.
View 8 Replies View RelatedExplorer is no longer working properly in a few ways. Programs often take a long time to start and display “(Not responding)” on the their top window frames. Right click menu sometimes takes a long time to appear while explorer freezes. The explorer window itself is sometimes quite long to change the display when I change folder (this is far from often, but happens).
The first window to appear when we click on the Start Menu, the one with the large icons, is usually OK, but sometimes it does the same as the “All Programs” second window;
Here, the folders do not open and on Task Manager I can watch explorer taking up all the CPU available resources immediately after I pass to “All Programs”;
However, if I click “Back” (explorer stops abnormally using all CPU resources);
Then I click “All Programs” again and the previously clicked folder is now already open, but explorer is again up with CPU resources, so if now I click on a subfolder or on another folder, it all repeats again.
At this moment I don’t have backups to install.
My start up program keeps trying to update, but I keep getting error 643. What can I do to correct this?

There's an application program called 'fix.exe' that Startup keeps blocking everytime I switch on my laptop. There are no description or publisher information and the startup type is 'Registry: Local Machine'.
The program is located in the Windows folder on my C: I can't do anything from Startup Program caused the options 'Remove / Disable / Enable' are greyed out.
Secondly, I've upgraded my Nero 7 to 8 and there are 2 options in the AutoPlay menu that are were uninstalled along with Nero 7. I've tried uninstalling Nero 8 and when the AutoPlay pop up, all the options of Nero 8 were still there.How do I delete unwanted options from the AutoPlay menu ?I'm running on Vista Home Premium A.
Not all programs listed in the pinned area and recently run area of the Start Menu will run when you click on them.This is true particularly of MS Office programs.Some programs will run when clicked on, but not others.With those that won't run, you have to go to "All Programs" and select them from there.This is very annoying, because you never know which programs will run.In Windows XP, you never had this problem.I was hoping that SP-1 would fix this, but it didn't.Do others have this problem? Can it be fixed?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm a novice so bear with me. Though I want some programs on my computer, I don't want them to automatically start up and slow down the boot up process. In the bottom right corner, I always have Adobe Downloader, Skype, Kodak Printer Status, Web Cam, etc. that I don't want to start up but want available on my desktop if I ever need them. If I go to Add/Delete programs, that will get rid of the program entirely. I just want to get rid of the automatic start up feature of the program. How can I do this????

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had my Snipping tool disappear from start/programs list AND short cut from quick links. An index search tool could not find it either. The popular solution of enabling from the 'add/remove programs windows function' in control panel did not help. Everyone and there brother told me this would solve my problem. I still could not locate the SnippingTool.exe file. I went to c:/windows/systems32/ and found SnippingTool.exe in the system32 folder and right click to create a desktop icon shortcut. bing...back in action. I still have no idea why my shortcuts and programs list from start menu would have disappeared, but at least if this happens again, I'll know what to do.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI hope this isn't a repeat of an earlier thread. I did a search but couldn't find anything on it. If it's a duplicate, then move/edit as appropriate. Most of us are familiar with programs that install themselves in the MSconfig.exe file to run everytime Windows starts. Most of us go in and uncheck all that crap except for the essential stuff. That's great, but you often end up with an MSconfig looking like this
For those that want to clean up all that unchecked crap, one can either go into the registry and clean manually. But I found this little program which can do it too. It's simple. It's small. And it's free. Pic above says v1.2 but here is the link to the latest version v1.5 MSConfig Cleanup - optimize your Windows startup Great site you have here.
I went into the advanced boot options to have my processors be listed as two and my max memory be listed as the 4096 I have in my system. Rebooted and fine. I went back into MSCONFIG and noticed that even though the check box was still checked under maximum memory.... the number had been set to zero. I wasn't thinking and actually exited out with a restart. Now when I am booting up, I get to where it says starting windows and my system freezes.

View 4 Replies View RelatedEvery boot og Vista Home Premium PC asks for c: disk to be checked. In msconfig I disabled all services and all startup items, but 3 reboots called for disk check each time. I let the disk check run each time. However, if I start in Safe mode, the first start takes a long time (I assume it is doing the disk check) then restarts. From then on, r reboots in safe mode did not ask for a disk check. The first normal reboot after safe mode does not ask for the dsik check. What is my next step in debugging/fixing?
