Oct 26, 2009i type something into start/search it keeps taking me to ''search results in indexed locations'' folder. no matter what i search for it just goes to this folder.

Aug 21, 2009After having some difficulty with "the black screen of death" and coming to the realization that my CA anti-virus wasn't picking up the bug that was causing my problems, I've switched to Norton 360 and eliminated the virus that was giving me fits. However, now that I've got my desktop back and things seem to be (a bit more) back to normal, I can't open my task manager or get into my disk manager or registry editor. The task manager just simply won't show up as an option and opening mmc/regedit just brings up the notepad.

May 1, 2008have home premium 32bit. When trying to download 15 day trial web i get the pop up widow to allow however the file listed is dfsvc.exe and not the program file. The program owner and I have tried to find the error but can't. Have scaneed withe AVG,Spybot and a couple of online programs and all say no threat. Using regedit I can't find this dfsvc file. Most of us are familiar with programs that install themselves in the MSconfig.exe file to run everytime Windows starts. Most of us go in and uncheck all that crap except for the essential stuff. That's great, but you often end up with an MSconfig looking like this

May 23, 2009I have a cpu with vista home premium. I would like to use msconfig to not start some programs. Is there a way to print out the programs in start up so I can take the time to verify I don not want them to run?

Sep 6, 2009In an effort to speed up my start up time I downloaded instructions from Microsoft's download site. One option used Windows Defender. I tried that. It changed nothing. I then tried an option using msconfig. I unchecked certain programs leaving my Anti Virus and Microsoft Operating programs. After a restart nothing had changed. The desktop still had the same icons. Maybe there is something I don't understand about start up programs. Has anyone any comments on this matter.

Jun 11, 2010I went into the advanced boot options to have my processors be listed as two and my max memory be listed as the 4096 I have in my system. Rebooted and fine. I went back into MSCONFIG and noticed that even though the check box was still checked under maximum memory.... the number had been set to zero. I wasn't thinking and actually exited out with a restart. Now when I am booting up, I get to where it says starting windows and my system freezes.

Jul 3, 2008Every boot og Vista Home Premium PC asks for c: disk to be checked. In msconfig I disabled all services and all startup items, but 3 reboots called for disk check each time. I let the disk check run each time. However, if I start in Safe mode, the first start takes a long time (I assume it is doing the disk check) then restarts. From then on, r reboots in safe mode did not ask for a disk check. The first normal reboot after safe mode does not ask for the dsik check. What is my next step in debugging/fixing?

I noticed in my msconfig, it still has all the apple programs like itunes and quicktime and bonjour etc in the list of services. Obviously because I got rid of them they dont work and it says unknown location but Im curious as to why they are still lurking around, since i did uninstalled them. Apr 8, 2009I have a friend who asked me to look at his HPA1737C desktop running Vista Home Premium tonight and most, if not all of his System32 processes, are no longer accessible. System Restore, Device Manager, MSCONFIG. etc cannot be opened and seemingly also anything System32 file related. Even the Volume icon in Taskbar has a Red X on it. I placed computer in SafeMode and selected Restore To Last Known Good Configuration and it had no affect on restoring. I could access the internet with IE7 and he can send email with no problems. Cannot uninstall or install any applications. He did install some Windows Updates KB867812, KB959772, KB960225, and KB958690 a few days back, but I see nothing in the Vista Newsgroup that would make these possibly related to his problem. Has Norton AV with latest definitions and full scan indicates no problems. I have set up a few Vista systems, but my expertise is XP related.

Apr 14, 2008This has not been a week that's made me much enamored of Vista. In order to troubleshoot my parents' Vista PC after their wireless mouse/keyboard suddenly stopped working after 4/9's automatic updates, I had to a do a system restore from Safe Mode. Their corded USB keyboard we got to work (along with a PS2 mouse) to do the fixing wouldn't work using the F8-method to get into Safe Mode, so I had use MSCONFIG to force a safe mode boot.
The system restore worked, and I've disabled automatic updates until MS comes out with a fix for the apparently widespread original problem, but now I'm stuck with a very frustrating situation. My parents' computer will only boot up into Selective Startup (which leaves some important things such as graphics drivers unloaded) or into Safe Mode. Within MSCONFIG, when I choose "Normal Startup", it automatically checks the "Safe Mode" Box in the boot tap, and when I uncheck that box, it automatically selects "Selective Start" on the previous tab. (I've tried hitting apply on each of the tabs, but it doesn't help). I've found a few other threads with this same problem across the web, but never found a solution.

Nov 30, 2009Outlook 2007 installed,and working fine. I needed to open winmail and found that it did not open. Found it running in taskman, but there is no winmail program window available.
I have tried:
1)delete winmail reg entries
2)delete winmail storage folders
3)rename winmail.exe file....
None of the above worked. Specifically, the results of points above:
1)started winmail after deleting reg entries,just remade them,is all.
2)ditto for point 2
3)nothing happens when double click renamed winmail.exe...
I dont want to use another program. I needed to visually advise someone about adding signatures,but winmail did not start. Yes I could do an internet search, but that is not the point-winmail is broken somehow and I wish to fix it.
, Outlook 07 And Exchange 03: Open Outlook It Says, Cannot Open The Default E-mail Folders
Mar 23, 2008When I boot up in the morning, I have to wait 20 to 30 mins before Outlook 07 will connect to my Exchange 2003 server. Until then, when I try to open Outlook it says, cannot open the default e-mail folders. And it suggests there is a network issue or that the Exchange server is down. These are not the case. The Exchange server is up and there are no network issues. I have many other computers attached to the network and none of them have this issue. Some our XP Pro/Office 07, some are XP Pro/Office 2003. The big difference with my machine is that it is Vista.
After about 20 to 30 minutes, wow! it connects! And then it's good for the rest of the day. I usually only minimize Outlook after I actually get it open so the connection is maintained throughout the day. I'm not sure what would happen if I closed it completely. But one thing is for sure, every morning, it takes 20 to 30 minutes before it will connect. Eventually, it always connects.

Could Not Open WMP
Dec 25, 2007Have an e-machine Vista Home Basic. About a week ago, I could not open WMP any more by just clicking the icon. I found that I could right click it and open with 'run as administrator'. At the same time I could no longer open Napster. It told me I didn't have a recent version of WMP, which I do. I have McAfee installed and I can no longer see the menu when I click that icon. Also had issues with internet explorer. Problems that I don't have with Moxilla.
I found that if I turn off User Account Control that all works fine. Of course I get a warning for not having that on. The real kicker is that none of these problems occur on my guest account even with UAC on. I've been searching Google and came upon this forum. Do I need to change a setting somewhere?
Cannot Open A PDF, DOC, PPT, DWG, Etc
May 6, 2009I could not open the attached files(PDF, DOC, PPT, DWG, etc...) in Window Mail directly from the paper clip icon drop down menu. However it can be opened after saving the attachement to other folders like desktop. The error message like this : The path or file name of "C:windowssystem32oooo.doc(or pdf, ppt, etc..) " is incorrect. please check the path of file name Sometime the path is "c:program filesahnlabooo.doc" Because I'm using the MS Office(Korean version), the error message is translated in english. (My poor english...^^)
I tried to search the solution. but I can't it anywhere. (Many people suggest a docfix or to reassociate the application program.)In my opinion, it is not concern with an application program(like word, powerpoint, acrobat...). It's just the problem of windows mail. Maybe the registry about windows mail seems to be changed.
Cant Open IE
Nov 28, 2009I have an odd problem in a 64 bit Vista system involving IE8. It appears in the Start Menu but Firefox is Default because IE has been playing up for a while. Now the user has a DRM issue in Media Player 11 and I urgently need to get IE working as Firefox cannot download the required files. When I open IE it immediately throws an error message and closes down. I go to uninstall it and get a fresh download and it fails even to appear in Control, Panel>Program etc. I try to delete the IE8folder or parts thereof and am told I dont have sufficient rights to do that. I throw in an IE8-WindowsVista-64-ENU.exe file from a flash drive and am told it cannot be installed in this system, despite it appearing to be the right file.
The really odd thing is that it works perfectly when calling down Updates and as long as it does that, there's no need to fix it but this DRM issue implies the music files have been ripped or copied more than five times. I'm assured that isn't the case but they have just been copied from an older laptop to this new one. I've copied the relevant Registry entry form the old machine but that hasn't fooled the system one bit. So there we are - a long sad tale but the crux is I either need suggestions as to fixing IE8 or how to fiddle Firefox to accept the WMP plug-in it doesn't seem to want to accept.
