Jul 14, 2008I am admin on my Vista64 SP1 PC which is connected to a domain. I have one of the few Vista PCs on the network. Any change I make in the Startup tab in MSCONFIG reverts to its pervious state as soon as I click Apply. As far as I know there are no network login Vista Group Policies in force yet. What do I look for to make MSCONFIG pay attention to me?

Sep 22, 2008I hope this isn't a repeat of an earlier thread. I did a search but couldn't find anything on it. If it's a duplicate, then move/edit as appropriate. Most of us are familiar with programs that install themselves in the MSconfig.exe file to run everytime Windows starts. Most of us go in and uncheck all that crap except for the essential stuff. That's great, but you often end up with an MSconfig looking like this
For those that want to clean up all that unchecked crap, one can either go into the registry and clean manually. But I found this little program which can do it too. It's simple. It's small. Msconfig Not Start Programs
May 23, 2009I have a cpu with vista home premium. I would like to use msconfig to not start some programs. Is there a way to print out the programs in start up so I can take the time to verify I don not want them to run?

Sep 6, 2009In an effort to speed up my start up time I downloaded instructions from Microsoft's download site. One option used Windows Defender. I tried that. It changed nothing. I then tried an option using msconfig. I unchecked certain programs leaving my Anti Virus and Microsoft Operating programs. After a restart nothing had changed. The desktop still had the same icons. Maybe there is something I don't understand about start up programs. Has anyone any comments on this matter.

Jun 11, 2010I went into the advanced boot options to have my processors be listed as two and my max memory be listed as the 4096 I have in my system. Rebooted and fine. I went back into MSCONFIG and noticed that even though the check box was still checked under maximum memory.... the number had been set to zero. I wasn't thinking and actually exited out with a restart. Now when I am booting up, I get to where it says starting windows and my system freezes.

Jul 3, 2008Every boot og Vista Home Premium PC asks for c: disk to be checked. In msconfig I disabled all services and all startup items, but 3 reboots called for disk check each time. I let the disk check run each time. However, if I start in Safe mode, the first start takes a long time (I assume it is doing the disk check) then restarts. From then on, r reboots in safe mode did not ask for a disk check. The first normal reboot after safe mode does not ask for the dsik check. What is my next step in debugging/fixing?

Aug 30, 2008Just wondering if its possible to remove old deleted programs from msconfig and other menus. I noticed in my msconfig, it still has all the apple programs like itunes and quicktime and bonjour etc in the list of services. Obviously because I got rid of them they dont work and it says unknown location but Im curious as to why they are still lurking around, since i did uninstalled them. Same with an old dvd ripper i tried out, now everytime i insert a dvd into my drive and the prompt menu comes theres still an option to use this uninstalled dvd program that has the blank icon next to it why wont it go away?

Apr 8, 2009I have a friend who asked me to look at his HPA1737C desktop running Vista Home Premium tonight and most, if not all of his System32 processes, are no longer accessible. System Restore, Device Manager, MSCONFIG. etc cannot be opened and seemingly also anything System32 file related. Even the Volume icon in Taskbar has a Red X on it. I placed computer in SafeMode and selected Restore To Last Known Good Configuration and it had no affect on restoring. I could access the internet with IE7 and he can send email with no problems. Cannot uninstall or install any applications. He did install some Windows Updates KB867812, KB959772, KB960225, and KB958690 a few days back, but I see nothing in the Vista Newsgroup that would make these possibly related to his problem. Has Norton AV with latest definitions and full scan indicates no problems. I have set up a few Vista systems, but my expertise is XP related.

Apr 14, 2008This has not been a week that's made me much enamored of Vista. In order to troubleshoot my parents' Vista PC after their wireless mouse/keyboard suddenly stopped working after 4/9's automatic updates, I had to a do a system restore from Safe Mode. Their corded USB keyboard we got to work (along with a PS2 mouse) to do the fixing wouldn't work using the F8-method to get into Safe Mode, so I had use MSCONFIG to force a safe mode boot.
The system restore worked, and I've disabled automatic updates until MS comes out with a fix for the apparently widespread original problem, but now I'm stuck with a very frustrating situation. My parents' computer will only boot up into Selective Startup (which leaves some important things such as graphics drivers unloaded) or into Safe Mode. Within MSCONFIG, when I choose "Normal Startup", it automatically checks the "Safe Mode" Box in the boot tap, and when I uncheck that box, it automatically selects "Selective Start" on the previous tab. (I've tried hitting apply on each of the tabs, but it doesn't help). I've found a few other threads with this same problem across the web, but never found a solution.

Jan 27, 2009I have been having a problem with what I think is windows updates(vista Bisness 32 bit os). I have a DVDRW/CDRW drive and it goes missing after I update my laptop. Now I have done a full system restore(back to factory sets). To fix the problem, only to have it comeback at me after I update. Now I have found that the driver is showing (Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) in the general tab) Now when I look in the driver tab under driver details. I see 2 drivers showing for the same thing, one from microsoft and one from sonic.
I have uninstalled the DVDRW/CDRW and restarted the laptop, only to see that the conflict is still there. There is no way for me to roll back the driver as that button is greyed out. I have checked windows updates and I don't see anything in there that is a driver.
However I have found 2 UPDATES FOR WINDOWS VISTA(KB957388) AND (KB952709) that say they are needed to resolve compatability issues. Questions (1) Does either of these have to do with my problem? and if so, (2) How do I deal with these issues?(3) If neither of these updates are the problem what is? (4) How I get rid of the second driver and which one do I remove?
I really would like to have the use of my DVDRW/CDRW rom, as anyone would but I really don't want to take the pc back to factory specs AGAIN only to have the problem again after I update. I asked those question only because I want to know if the updates are the problem, then I can remove them and not let them download again

Feb 26, 2010Some months back I installed Vista 32-bit Home Premium in C: partition. When W7 came out, I installed W7 Ultimate 64-bit in D: as a dual boot. Now I want to keep Vista, but use W7 as the main OS I am going to build on from here on out, so I want it at the front of the hard disk in C: (where it will run faster) and my secondary or experimental OS in D: (Vista).
So I backed up Vista to an external drive, booted from a CD (DriveImage XML BartPE) and restored the Vista image to D: ... then reinstalled W7 in C:.
When I booted after re-installing W7, the multi-boot menu listed Windows 7 twice, instead of Windows 7 and Vista, which I kind of expected, because W7 *had* been in D: and now it was in C: "too." I used Easy BCDEdit to correct the text.
Now the machine boots into W7 fine, but when I try to boot to Vista, I get the usual logo, then the Welcome screen, which lasts a bit longer than it would if nothing was hooey... then I get a cursor (responsive) and a black (empty) desktop.
I used Ctl Atl Del to access Task Mgr, and tried clicking the New Task button and entering explorer.exe, but it is looking at my C: drive for explorer, rather than where it SHOULD be looking in D:, because a funky, unstable, nonfunctional W7 desktop finally came up INSIDE VISTA!! (mind you, W7 is 64-bit!)
I shut down and tried booting into safe mode.... Got the same result of a black screen, and tried entering D:windowsexplorer.exe but got the same error message:
"...ieframe.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error..."
..and again the W7 desktop "tried" to come up.
I suspect it's looking in W7's folder (C:) because the backup image I made of Vista probably contains the original MBR, which mapped Vista to C:. I was hoping when I re-installed W7 to C: with the restored VISTA image already in D: that W7 would create a correct MBR... and it did, I think, but it left the old MBR at the beginning of the D:drive TOO... so when I boot to D:, the MBR record [ON D:] is telling VISTA it is in C:!! Hence Vista goes pokin around in my W7 (C:|) directory.
I downloaded the bootable Vista Recovery CD but it didn't find any problems, and I believe that's because VISTA isn't the problem... the MBR on D: is!
I don't want to have to rebuild the Vista OS... just need to remove the incorrect (old) MBR from the beginning of the D: drive... Can I do that?? Can I test this theory by somehow reading the first sector of that drive?

Mar 23, 2008I have a Home Network with wired 2 - desktops and wifi 2 - laptops and a network printer. One desktop is running Vista Ultimate and the rest have XP Pro. On the Vista desktop I got the discovery on; file and printer sharing on. When I check the network screen on the Vista machine all other workstations on the network are visible and shared directories accessible including the printer.
The same thing with the XP workstatins except that the Vista machine is not visible on the Network screen of the XP workstations. However, if I go to a XP machine and map a shared directory on the Vista machine it is successfuk and be able to access the directory on the Vista machine. Is there a step I missed that the Vista machine is not visible on the XP machines.

Jul 20, 2009I have been plagued with this problem on my Desktop, wherein the DVD drives go missing at random time intervals.
1> Checked the BIOS, both drives are shown (Tried the NATIVE and LEGACY settings)
2> Checked the cables and power supply ( Have put in a new PATA IDE cable for good measure)
3> Updated to SP2 thinking it would have a fix!
Searched Google and tried these Solutions
4> Uninstalled 3rd party Dvd writing software, which i had installed after discovering this problem. (Never had installed iTunes, roxio or zune software)
5> Checked registry values at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
There were no Upper or lower Filters entries.
6> Tried the Auto Fix at "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060" this doesn't work as it says Computer settings already match.
7> Then tried the auto Fix it.................
