Msconfig Disabled All Services And All Startup Items?

Jul 3, 2008

Every boot og Vista Home Premium PC asks for c: disk to be checked. In msconfig I disabled all services and all startup items, but 3 reboots called for disk check each time. I let the disk check run each time. However, if I start in Safe mode, the first start takes a long time (I assume it is doing the disk check) then restarts. From then on, r reboots in safe mode did not ask for a disk check. The first normal reboot after safe mode does not ask for the dsik check. What is my next step in debugging/fixing?

Registry And Deleted The Item From The Startup Tab And Disabled Startup Tab

May 23, 2009

I am running Vista 64 and installed a program which apparently had a virus or I got it using IE8. I found an entry in the start up tab that was causing a problem. I went into the registry and deleted the item from the startup tab and I also disabled it in the startup tab. The startup tab still shows the item even though it is disabled and deleted from the registry. Why does it still show in MSCONFIG and how do I delete it from the start up entry

MSCONFIG Boot - Stuck In Safe Mode Or Selective Startup

Apr 14, 2008

This has not been a week that's made me much enamored of Vista. In order to troubleshoot my parents' Vista PC after their wireless mouse/keyboard suddenly stopped working after 4/9's automatic updates, I had to a do a system restore from Safe Mode. Their corded USB keyboard we got to work (along with a PS2 mouse) to do the fixing wouldn't work using the F8-method to get into Safe Mode, so I had use MSCONFIG to force a safe mode boot.

The system restore worked, and I've disabled automatic updates until MS comes out with a fix for the apparently widespread original problem, but now I'm stuck with a very frustrating situation. My parents' computer will only boot up into Selective Startup (which leaves some important things such as graphics drivers unloaded) or into Safe Mode. Within MSCONFIG, when I choose "Normal Startup", it automatically checks the "Safe Mode" Box in the boot tap, and when I uncheck that box, it automatically selects "Selective Start" on the previous tab. (I've tried hitting apply on each of the tabs, but it doesn't help). I've found a few other threads with this same problem across the web, but never found a solution.

SP1: DISABLED In The Startup

Mar 24, 2008

After a long debate with myself, I went ahead and downloaded SP1 for my old system. I had installed a new Logitech camera that was using the Lv? .exe driver or something. Anyway, unplugged the camera and deactivated the Logitech programs in the startup for all users. Installed SP1. Rebooted. Came back after several hours. Re-Attached the USB devices. Everything works. For the moment, I have the Logitech entries still DISABLED in the startup.

Rid Of The "Recent Items" List From The Startup

May 15, 2010

I was trying to get rid of the "Recent Items" list from the startup (found the option to allow it or not, so that's not a problem anymore) but while doing so, I went to the source (/appdata/roaming/microsoft/windows) and dragged the icon to my desktop to see if that would work. What happened was I created another "Recent Items" icon on my desktop, which I can't move or delete. Plus, I still have the original one which I also can't move or delete. I don't want the one on my desktop anymore, is there any way to get rid of it?

Tool To Clean Up MSCONFIG.exe

Sep 22, 2008

I hope this isn't a repeat of an earlier thread. I did a search but couldn't find anything on it. If it's a duplicate, then move/edit as appropriate. Most of us are familiar with programs that install themselves in the MSconfig.exe file to run everytime Windows starts. Most of us go in and uncheck all that crap except for the essential stuff. That's great, but you often end up with an MSconfig looking like this

For those that want to clean up all that unchecked crap, one can either go into the registry and clean manually. But I found this little program which can do it too. It's simple. It's small. And it's free. Pic above says v1.2 but here is the link to the latest version v1.5 MSConfig Cleanup - optimize your Windows startup Great site you have here.

Start Up Option Using Msconfig

Sep 6, 2009

In an effort to speed up my start up time I downloaded instructions from Microsoft's download site. One option used Windows Defender. I tried that. It changed nothing. I then tried an option using msconfig. I unchecked certain programs leaving my Anti Virus and Microsoft Operating programs. After a restart nothing had changed. The desktop still had the same icons. Maybe there is something I don't understand about start up programs. Has anyone any comments on this matter.

MSCONFIG: System Freezes

I went back into MSCONFIG and noticed that even though the check box was still checked under maximum memory.... the number had been set to zero. I wasn't thinking and actually exited out with a restart. Now when I am booting up, I get to where it says starting windows and my system freezes.

Deleted Items NOT Showing Up In Deleted Items Folder

Dec 31, 2009

I've been using Windows Mail for 18 months without any significant problems.

Now, when I delete an email from my "Inbox," it does NOT appear in my "Deleted Items" folder. It just seems to disappear. I did read many of the earlier posts and have tried the suggestions. I've gone to Tools>Options>Advanced>Maintenance - the "Empty messages from the Deleted Items folder on exit" is NOT checked. I've also gone to Current View "Show all messages" - that's identified/checked. Is there something else that I can do? I'd appreciate any suggestions. This is the first time I've used
the Discussion Group, so I hope that I'm doing this correctly.

Remove Old Deleted Program Msconfig Menus

Just wondering if its possible to remove old deleted programs from msconfig and other menus. I noticed in my msconfig, it still has all the apple programs like itunes and quicktime and bonjour etc in the list of services. Obviously because I got rid of them they dont work and it says unknown location but Im curious as to why they are still lurking around, since i did uninstalled them. Same with an old dvd ripper i tried out, now everytime i insert a dvd into my drive and the prompt menu comes theres still an option to use this uninstalled dvd program that has the blank icon next to it why wont it go away?

System Restore, Device Manager Msconfig Can't Opened

Apr 8, 2009

I have a friend who asked me to look at his HPA1737C desktop running Vista Home Premium tonight and most, if not all of his System32 processes, are no longer accessible. System Restore, Device Manager, MSCONFIG. etc cannot be opened and seemingly also anything System32 file related. Even the Volume icon in Taskbar has a Red X on it. I placed computer in SafeMode and selected Restore To Last Known Good Configuration and it had no affect on restoring. I could access the internet with IE7 and he can send email with no problems. Cannot uninstall or install any applications. He did install some Windows Updates KB867812, KB959772, KB960225, and KB958690 a few days back, but I see nothing in the Vista Newsgroup that would make these possibly related to his problem. Has Norton AV with latest definitions and full scan indicates no problems. I have set up a few Vista systems, but my expertise is XP related.

Vista Startup: After Two Minutes I Get The Welcome Screen. Then The Monitor Goes Black For A Full Two Minutes Before Continuing The Startup Process

Mar 23, 2008

I have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.

1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?

2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?

3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?

I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.

key services I wouldn't touch myself aren't running and I can't start them - it's not just the iSCSI service that I spotted first, it is also the Event Log, Task

Decided I would do a System Restore but the only restore point available is this morning (9 Feb) and no further back I can't retore to a known good point before the issue occurred. There's 20GB free on the System disk (System Restore is enabled - there is ONE restore point!), so why only one restore point available?.......

Services Not Start

Mar 26, 2009

I've been going crazy on this machine. It was brought to me by someone who thought they had some "RedDwarf" virus. So I took a look at the machine. Could not find any bugs spyware, virus or worms on the machine. I was able to locate in the event log, that when they were trying to use thier 2wire installation disk because they could not get online, a RedDwarf program listed as being part of Motive Software... I belive they do the programming for 2Wire. Anyway.... it was installed in compatiblity mode... after rebooting the machine.. this is what happens...

When booting normally to the desktop.. desktop loads, AIM loads, no network of any kind. Only a handfull of services start RPC, COM+, DCOM, SENS, GroupPolicy, User Profile, Software Licensing, and a few more... and I mean a few. No other services will start on the computer. I have used system restore going back almost 2 months with the same effect. I can only get........
