View 3 RepliesI have just recently bought my laptop with Vista Home Premium on it. The problem occurred after I transferred all files over and tried to play my Corrinne Baley Ray audio cd. The page came up saying I needed to download a license and to press the button. After doing this I get a message saying that "my netscape browser does not have windows media services plugins installed. And thats as far as I can go.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Windows Vista (32bit) Ultimate on a second machine in my home network, and the content for on-line services is very different on them both. The regional settings for both of these machines are the same (Netherlands), but the content is very different. How can I add/change the on-line regional content for media center? I've already looked into adding .mcl files into the AppData directory, but this isn't the solution that I'm looking for.

Media center keeps popping up, I have not been able to find a way to disable it, so that I can use the program only when I want. It is very tiresome to keep have it. open when ever I pop a cd or dvd in to my drive. I would like some control over which program I use to view/listen to the media I have, and not have one pop up automatically.

I've noticed that Vista has a lot more background services running than XP does and one of my pet peeves is to see a crap load of services running and knowing I don't need all of them but not knowing which one's I don't need.
Could anyone tell me if there are some common services that I can stop from loading up that will not affect Vista?
key services I wouldn't touch myself aren't running and I can't start them - it's not just the iSCSI service that I spotted first, it is also the Event Log, Task
Scheduler... god knows that else! Decided I would do a System Restore but the only restore point available is this morning (9 Feb) and no further back I can't retore to a known good point before the issue occurred. There's 20GB free on the System disk (System Restore is enabled - there is ONE restore point!), so why only one restore point available?.......
I've been going crazy on this machine. It was brought to me by someone who thought they had some "RedDwarf" virus. So I took a look at the machine. Could not find any bugs spyware, virus or worms on the machine. I was able to locate in the event log, that when they were trying to use thier 2wire installation disk because they could not get online, a RedDwarf program listed as being part of Motive Software... I belive they do the programming for 2Wire. Anyway.... it was installed in compatiblity mode... after rebooting the machine.. this is what happens...
When booting normally to the desktop.. desktop loads, AIM loads, no network of any kind. Only a handfull of services start RPC, COM+, DCOM, SENS, GroupPolicy, User Profile, Software Licensing, and a few more... and I mean a few. No other services will start on the computer. I have used system restore going back almost 2 months with the same effect. I can only get........

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy new computer has a SATA HDD and im trying to put in an old IDE HDD
but when I hook it up I get get a blank screen after the BIOS loads for
about 5minutes and then windows finally loads. When I do get into
Windows (Vista x64) it doesn't see the drive until i go into Disk
Management and rescan disk 2-3 times, then it doesn't see its partitions
until i scan again, and then it freezes my whole computer and i have to
hit the reset button on my case.
The IDE cable is also hooked up to a DVD drive, I don't know if thats a
problem or not.
Also are their IDE to SATA adapters?
Due to an Office Enterprise issue that can only be resolved with a clean re-install of Vista on an ACER computer rather than re-installing the ACER factory load I have bought a Full version of VISTA Home Preimum so that I can do a CLEAN install. I have 3 partitions on my HD C, D & hidden, the hidden contains the factory load. My plan is to run a full back up to D as well as copies of my files. I will also make copies of my files off computer. I do have the ACER recovery disks but I hope to never have to use them.
When I am all backed up I would like to format C, get rid of the hidden partition, keep D, put the VISTA DVD into the drive and do a clean install of VISTA on C . I could be wrong but I think that it would be best to format before putting the VISTA disk into the drive so there is no confusion between product keys etc. this is not an upgrade it is the same version that ACER supplied.
Do you use the web-based VMWare Management Interface to control your ESX server and have problems opening virtual machines in IE7?
Many user have reported that instead of getting the open prompt in IE7 they get a find option instead. To fix this, you need to define the application/x-vmware-console MIME type so IE7 allows you to open the file.
Open up notepad.
Copy the text below into notepad:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTMIMEDatabaseContent Typeapplication/x-vmware-console] "Extension"=".xvm" ....
When I attempt to start stopped services, ThinkVantage task scheduler, in the Task Manager on a Thinkpad R61i with Vista, an error message says "Access Denied". If I try to start the services from Control Panel > Administrative
Tools > Services, the PC hangs.
I am running Vista Home, 32 bit, with SP2.
I turned on my laptop, and there was no wireless internet. Turns out a lot of important services have stopped and I cant turn them on.
They include:
DHCP Client
Diagnostic Policy Service
IPsec Policy Agent
Network List Service
Network Location Awareness
Office Source Engine
Windows Firewall
Windows Time
I managed a workaround by defining an IP manually to my wireless card, and at least it connected to the internet, but DHCP is still stopped. So is the Diagnostic service, so the "repair button" wont work either.
When I go to services and try to start them, I get the error, "Access is denied", or "The dependency service or group failed to start".
My Network sharing centre is saying the same thing. Firewall is also disabled, error is "Security centre cant turn on windows firewall"...
I recently installed Vista with on this machine with this new HD deatched though it had previously been used in this computer running xp. It is a IDE hard drive and although device manager recognizes it as a disk drive I cannot get windows explorer or disk management to notice it. It has a ntfs format.

I am certain it was fine when I first installed Vista as I formatted and partitioned both the internal and external HD. I have tried rescanning and resetting my computer, both to no avail. It is interesting to note that Memory Diagnostic Tool doesn't seem to want to work either...Microsoft only suggested rescanning and resetting, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just recently upgraded my XP system to a Vista 64 bit system. I print digital photos using Adobe Lightroom 1.4. With my XP system, I had a good match between my calibrated monitor (NEC 2690) and my printer (HP B9180) working in the ProPhoto RGB color space. I use ICC profiles and let the Lightroom application manage the color. With Vista, I've lost my match. Skin tones look great on my monitor and now print with a red tint. A blue sky prints with a purple cast. I tried Lightroom Beta 2 (64 bit software) but no difference. I played with some advanced settings in Vista's Color Management without success. I'm using NEC's SpectraView II calibration software which is 64 bit compatible. The graphics card that came with the computer is a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT.
View 6 Replies View RelatedBy a process too tedious to recount I've wound up with the following primary partitions on disk 0 of my laptop, a Compaq Presario R3275US with a 75-gig hard drive:
C: System (43 gig)
D: Local Drive (15 gig)
G: New Volume (15 gig)
Is it possible to combine the empty G with the non-empty D without erasing the latter in the process? If so, how can that be done?
I used to use this site when I had XP to know which services I could turn off safely, and I wondered whether this is still a good site to go to for such things (ie Vista), I only ever used it to try to get that extra bit of oomph out of the PC and by and large it helped a fair bit. I still have loads listed in the Task Manager Processes, and am unsure what I can stop and what I should leave well alone Or is there a guide here for such things? has anyone else used Black Vipers site? or should I keep my distance? Diagnostic Policy Service just fails-the associated DLL service fails and won't start for lack of "sufficient rights/access denied". Anyone have any insight other than rebuild the box? I am going to ensure to place it in a container that doesn't receive any GPO policies, but how do I know/find out what is causing this to occur?

how can I get this annoying persistent nuisance to stop coming up?
I was dragged kicking and screaming into Vista and truthfully am almost liking it (or not hating it as much as I thought I would).
HOWEVER, this is the kinda crap that will make me regret it.
As the title says Computer management in Administrative tools refuses to start.
I double click on the icon and it comes up with the UAC popup i click yes and then nothing happens. i tried it like a half hour ago and still nothing.
I have tried just about everything to resolve this. Running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit and this occurs anytime I try to browse for computers or printers.
Network is set to "Private"
Network discovery "On"
File Sharing "On"
Firewall "Disabled"
LLTD "Installed"
I have read that I need to setup a DNS server, however, I never did this in XP and never had a problem browsing for computers/hardware. What am I missing? What services are necessary for AD?
