Important Services Have Stopped.

Aug 29, 2009

I am running Vista Home, 32 bit, with SP2.

I turned on my laptop, and there was no wireless internet. Turns out a lot of important services have stopped and I cant turn them on.

They include:

DHCP Client
Diagnostic Policy Service
IPsec Policy Agent
Network List Service
Network Location Awareness
Office Source Engine
Windows Firewall
Windows Time

I managed a workaround by defining an IP manually to my wireless card, and at least it connected to the internet, but DHCP is still stopped. So is the Diagnostic service, so the "repair button" wont work either.

When I go to services and try to start them, I get the error, "Access is denied", or "The dependency service or group failed to start".

My Network sharing centre is saying the same thing. Firewall is also disabled, error is "Security centre cant turn on windows firewall"...

Starting Stopped Services

May 2, 2008

When I attempt to start stopped services, ThinkVantage task scheduler, in the Task Manager on a Thinkpad R61i with Vista, an error message says "Access Denied". If I try to start the services from Control Panel > Administrative
Tools > Services, the PC hangs.

Host Process For Windows Services Stopped Working

Dec 24, 2008

2 weeks ago I've installed fresh new copy of Vista x64 ultimate sp1 and downloaded all critical updates. From time to time I got BSODs randomly + windows continues to spam me with message error message "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed" - in event log it appeares as

"Faulting application svchost.exe_iphlpsvc, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x47919291, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791adec, exception code 0xc0000374, fault offset 0x00000000000a6e97, process id 0xde8, application start time 0x01c965d5d7c709ab."

After getting this message my window appearance changes for aero to half-aero-half-classic style and language icon diappeares from taskbar (and hotkey alt+shift stoppes wirking too - can't swich from default language ). I've tried to chnage language bar settings from Control Panel (Floating/Docked/Hidden) does nothing. Only restart brings things to normal, but after unpredictable period of time it happens again.

"Host Services Stopped Working"

Jun 18, 2008

Like tons of other people, I've been getting lots of those "Host services have stopped working. You will be notified if a solution is found" messages. You are forced to close the box....no other option is available. The result of this is that my internet connection slows to a crawl. I post the actual error log in the forum of the program that crashed. Apparently the problem is with "Windows Management Instrumentation"....and I have no idea where a forum for that resides. So I'm hoping a solution can be found here. Here is the log that gets generated.

Important For To Have UAC Enabled

Sep 28, 2009

O/S Vista Home Basic 32 bit. I had some IE problems which were also interferring with my printer causing it not to print. MS/MVP, PA Bear, helped me solve the IE problem in the IE group, which in turn solved the printer not working problem. Now I just have 1 little glitch. The printer will NOT print as long as UAC is enabled but WILL print when UAC is turned off. I did post this question in the printer group 4 days ago but have had no responses.

So my question now is this: Is it important for me to have UAC enabled? In the household there is only 1 computer & 1 printer (both wireless) & I am the only one who knows how to use the computer. I am not worried about people tampering around with my computer in my home. I'm a little foggy as to exactly what UAC controls but from what I can make out it seems it only involves preventing someone from making unauthorized changes to my computer.

How Important Is X64 Optimization?

Aug 19, 2008

Speaking from your experience with x64 OS and various programs, does it make a noticeable difference when it's running in 32bit mode or if it's running native? It can be any kind of programs, instant messaging, playing games, firewalls, browsers... etc etc. I want to ask a specific question, Should I go with 32bit mode firefox, or minefield? Is the 64bit optimization worth it to deal with a beta program? or would 32bit mode firefox just be easier to use.

Important Updates Don't Know Which First

Nov 21, 2009

I did a clean install using the tutorial as a guide on a 64 bit machine. It was seamless and worked perfectly. Now I have 70 "important" updates, but I am hesitant because I don't know which ones I should install first. They are not dated as far as I can see unless I look at each one individually. I have downloaded to my computer but not installed any yet. Using SP1 from one year ago.

More Background Services Than XP

Dec 14, 2008

I've noticed that Vista has a lot more background services running than XP does and one of my pet peeves is to see a crap load of services running and knowing I don't need all of them but not knowing which one's I don't need.

Could anyone tell me if there are some common services that I can stop from loading up that will not affect Vista?

Key Services Can't Start

Mar 23, 2008

key services I wouldn't touch myself aren't running and I can't start them - it's not just the iSCSI service that I spotted first, it is also the Event Log, Task
Scheduler... god knows that else! Decided I would do a System Restore but the only restore point available is this morning (9 Feb) and no further back I can't retore to a known good point before the issue occurred. There's 20GB free on the System disk (System Restore is enabled - there is ONE restore point!), so why only one restore point available?.......

Services Not Start

Mar 26, 2009

I've been going crazy on this machine. It was brought to me by someone who thought they had some "RedDwarf" virus. So I took a look at the machine. Could not find any bugs spyware, virus or worms on the machine. I was able to locate in the event log, that when they were trying to use thier 2wire installation disk because they could not get online, a RedDwarf program listed as being part of Motive Software... I belive they do the programming for 2Wire. Anyway.... it was installed in compatiblity mode... after rebooting the machine.. this is what happens...

When booting normally to the desktop.. desktop loads, AIM loads, no network of any kind. Only a handfull of services start RPC, COM+, DCOM, SENS, GroupPolicy, User Profile, Software Licensing, and a few more... and I mean a few. No other services will start on the computer. I have used system restore going back almost 2 months with the same effect. I can only get........

Balloon Message Saying "I Have 8 Days Left To Install Vista. Back Up All Important Data"

Jun 23, 2008

I installed Vista home premium OEM about 9 months ago and today I got a balloon message saying "I have 8 days left to install Vista. Back up all important data" The balloon messages have appeared recently, but I wasn't quick enough to read it all and I didn't believe it anyway. Just to see, I went through the process of reinstalling, but it was going to be a new install wiping all files and data from my C drive, so I cancelled the install. Would anyone know why this is happening after 9 months and is there anyway I can get around a new install? I have been using Acronis to back up, can I use it to put my settings/files/data back, or will I end up with balloon messages again?

I have received notification - "Important to install Sp 1 on my computer."

Checking on the net it appears some have had audio problems after the install.

My Question: If I install Sp1 and exprience problems can the update be uninstalled

and will this correct the problem?

Another approach may be to set up a RESTORE POINT before the Install

(sometimes this is an automatic) - would that work?

I have read a rather long Troubleshooting paper on this subject - and I wonder ...

I still have loads listed in the Task Manager Processes, and am unsure what I can stop and what I should leave well alone Or is there a guide here for such things? has anyone else used Black Vipers site? or should I keep my distance? Network Services Stops

Jan 14, 2008

Vista Enterprise x86 - installed - running on a Windows 2000 AD domain... runs fine for about 30-45 days then just stops working on the network. Diagnostic Policy Service just fails-the associated DLL service fails and won't start for lack of "sufficient rights/access denied". Anyone have any insight other than rebuild the box? I am going to ensure to place it in a container that doesn't receive any GPO policies, but how do I know/find out what is causing this to occur?

Portal: Disable Services, Hl2.exe Conflict

May 31, 2008

Just just got the new Portal Demo through Steam. When I launch the game it starts for a few seconds then it crashes. Windows tells me that hl2.exe has a conflict, stopped working and has to close. It goes on to say that Windows will notify me if there is a solution. But unfortunatly there is none.

Here`s what I tried----------Here are My Specs:
Updated Video drivers--------Vista Home Premium 64 Bit
Disabled UAC---------------- XFX 8800GTS 320x2 in SLI Mode
Updated Direct X-------------XFX 680i Motherboard
Disabled Virus Program--------4x1 Gigs of Crucial Dual Sided Memory
Disabled Firewall--------------PC2(6400) 800MGHZ
Updated Bios-----------------Samsung 500 Gig HDDx2

There are alot of people having trouble with this Portal game. Some say to disable Services. Some say certain virus programs have to be completely uninstalled. Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it while having similar specs as me?
