Just just got the new Portal Demo through Steam. When I launch the game it starts for a few seconds then it crashes. Windows tells me that hl2.exe has a conflict, stopped working and has to close. It goes on to say that Windows will notify me if there is a solution. But unfortunatly there is none.
Here`s what I tried----------Here are My Specs:

There are alot of people having trouble with this Portal game. Some say to disable Services. Some say certain virus programs have to be completely uninstalled. Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it while having similar specs as me?
I used to use this site when I had XP to know which services I could turn off safely, and I wondered whether this is still a good site to go to for such things (ie Vista), I only ever used it to try to get that extra bit of oomph out of the PC and by and large it helped a fair bit. I still have loads listed in the Task Manager Processes, and am unsure what I can stop and what I should leave well alone Or is there a guide here for such things? has anyone else used Black Vipers site? or should I keep my distance? LAzJHA.5684@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl> I understand that the only NNTP newsgroup is in Italiano, and that Technet has some forums that discuss Windows 7 and will permit discussion of RC1 when MSFT (who sends emails to partners saying it's available for download that links you to dead links that aren't LOL available for download until about Tuesday) but many of you might enjoy this Windows 7 Learning Portal that MSFT just put up given that MSFT is going to unleash Win 7 RC1 Build 7100 on Tuesday for the public as a CPP
My custom built laptop doesnt seem to want to connect to my home network, but the internet cafe downtown has the same ISP and my laptop connects just fine there. The laptop works fine at home wired in but the wireless always returns the 169.x.x.x address. I will be posting the ipconfig / all as soon as im home.
Unlike a lot of people I actually don't mind the UAC running in the background. BUT... When I boot up my machine I get UAC prompting me to allow Explorer to run and the controls for my graphics card. Is there a way to permanently allow these programs to run? In other words, can you set up allowances for individual programs?
My laptop comes with Win vista basic with the hidden recovery all in my C drive. My laptop has 2 partition, C & D drives. Im thinking of installing Win XP in a folder under D drive, is it workable? This will allow my laptop to have 2 OS. Will there be any conflict?
I have a drive letter that's mapped to a network drive by default. When I insert a USB drive it tries to assign itself to that same letter, which creates a conflict and I can't figure out how to access the USB drive. Is there some way I can direct it to another drive letter?
Damn PC games always have issues rising up for me. Well, I recently got World In Conflict, but singeplayer doesn't seem to work for me. Once the resources are loaded in a new game, it closes and the annoying "_________ has stopped working, windows is searching for a solution" window pops up. I tried installing the patch, but that didn't help either. I tried configuring Data Execution Prevention, and ran as administrator. The game is fairly new and it was mean to be compatible with Vista 32/64bit so I'm not sure what's wrong with it.
I have 2 computers, one with XP and one with Vista. I recently got DSL and bought a hub to connect both systems to the net. When I do this i cannot connect to the net with either system. On the XP I get an error about IP address conflict, the IP address is already in use. I have the hub closest to the XP system. The tech had me try to release then renew my IP address in CMD prompt on the Vista computer and it give me an error about stating that an IP address has not been assigned.
WARNING DVD43 is installed on your PC. There is a serious conflict between AnyDvd and DVD43. For the stability of your system it is highly reccomended. Do you wish to do that now. click yes or no. Well I clicked yes. Now I get this FileC:unins000.dat does not exist-cannot uninstall When I went to the control panel, dvd43 was showing up, so I clicked on uninstall.came back that it has been uninstalled.
When my PC was delivered, and evaluation copy of McAfee Command Centre was pre installed. As I prefer to use my own antivrus product as well as Windows own firewall, I uninstalled McAfee. Although it didn't fully install, I removed the files left behind with the removal tool provided by McAfee. I installed my own antivirus product, aVast, and activated Windows firewall. If I look in Security Centre, the is a conflict warning saying that I have two firewalls activated. For some reason, McAfee is still shown as being present as both a firewall and antivirus protection. I don't know how this can be because McAfee is no longer on my computer. Furthermore I cannot find any way to remove the reference to McAfee.
I purchased a new system with Vista Home Premium and install MS OfficeXp. All of the MS Office programs installed and opened just fine except for MS Outlook, when I open MSOutlook, I receive an error message advising me that Windows VISTA encountered a problem and must close. The the Error message is "THE ORDINAL 6718 COULLD NOT BE LOCATED IN DLL MSV.DLL". MSOfficeXp including Outlook worked find with my "old" WindowsXp Pro system but there appears to be a conflict with Outlook 2002 and VISTA. I have updated VISTA and MSOfficeXp on the Microsoft Website
I wrote a couple of days ago about stuttering sound, and how it would kill my FPS in Bioshock or any other games. I looked in my system info and saw this: <img src="http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/883/irqproblem2.png">
After installing Office 2003 on a Dell 1330 with Vista Home Premium, the default mail tool changed, of course, from Thunderbird to Outlook. I uninstalled Outlook, and the default email tool changed to Windows Mail. I have tried using the Default Programs control panel and other means to change the default email tool back to Thunderbird, to no avail. Each time it starts it asks me whether I want Thunderbird to be the default. Each time I click yes, but the setting doesn't hold.
I have gone through all the usual steps to define Thunderbird as the default. In Windows Mail, the option to change it so that it is not the default is mysteriously grayed out. how to get around this? Windows Mail seems more like a virus to me than a legitimate piece of software. It doesn't even show up in the list of Windows services, so I can't even turn it off! What's so weird about this is that it all worked fine until I installed Office 2003 ... now, I can't change the default mail tool.
who use comodo firewall with media programs like dvd converters etc etc. Ive been trying to make a dvd of personal avi clips into a dvd, now the software i use it allok avi2dvd, however each time i convert the files which works fine, at the end of completion, the fireall pops up and basicly says its going to execute allok bla bla, it says if i use this application and trust it, then press allow, which ive done, ive also blocked it, anyway after that their is nooooo dvd files left at all, which normally it would create the dvd files for me where ive saved them to burn. is this a firewall issue? cause this is really annoying and ill rather not use comodo as a firewall if its going to do execute and delete the files ive just created...just makes no sence to me. iam lost
does anyone have any reviews on Kaspersky? I was running PCtools firewall plus - but my dell rep said that it will conflict with vista - running dell Inspiron 530 gateway. I also have avast running - would I need both (I disabled windows antivirus but have defender running)
I have a single (lone) windows Vista machine connected directly to the internet via a dsl modem. I just viewed the following in my eventlogs:
"The browser was unable to promote itself to master browser. The computer that currently believes it is the master browser is JAYS. My machine is NOT called JAYS."
I've noticed that Vista has a lot more background services running than XP does and one of my pet peeves is to see a crap load of services running and knowing I don't need all of them but not knowing which one's I don't need.
Could anyone tell me if there are some common services that I can stop from loading up that will not affect Vista?
key services I wouldn't touch myself aren't running and I can't start them - it's not just the iSCSI service that I spotted first, it is also the Event Log, Task Scheduler... god knows that else! Decided I would do a System Restore but the only restore point available is this morning (9 Feb) and no further back I can't retore to a known good point before the issue occurred. There's 20GB free on the System disk (System Restore is enabled - there is ONE restore point!), so why only one restore point available?.......
I've been going crazy on this machine. It was brought to me by someone who thought they had some "RedDwarf" virus. So I took a look at the machine. Could not find any bugs spyware, virus or worms on the machine. I was able to locate in the event log, that when they were trying to use thier 2wire installation disk because they could not get online, a RedDwarf program listed as being part of Motive Software... I belive they do the programming for 2Wire. Anyway.... it was installed in compatiblity mode... after rebooting the machine.. this is what happens...
When booting normally to the desktop.. desktop loads, AIM loads, no network of any kind. Only a handfull of services start RPC, COM+, DCOM, SENS, GroupPolicy, User Profile, Software Licensing, and a few more... and I mean a few. No other services will start on the computer. I have used system restore going back almost 2 months with the same effect. I can only get........
When I attempt to start stopped services, ThinkVantage task scheduler, in the Task Manager on a Thinkpad R61i with Vista, an error message says "Access Denied". If I try to start the services from Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, the PC hangs.
I turned on my laptop, and there was no wireless internet. Turns out a lot of important services have stopped and I cant turn them on.
They include:
DHCP Client Diagnostic Policy Service IPsec Policy Agent Network List Service Network Location Awareness Office Source Engine Windows Firewall Windows Time
I managed a workaround by defining an IP manually to my wireless card, and at least it connected to the internet, but DHCP is still stopped. So is the Diagnostic service, so the "repair button" wont work either.
When I go to services and try to start them, I get the error, "Access is denied", or "The dependency service or group failed to start".
My Network sharing centre is saying the same thing. Firewall is also disabled, error is "Security centre cant turn on windows firewall"...
The Windows Event Log service does not start even though it is set for AUtomatic load. It will not even start when I go into Services and try to start it manually. The error message is: Windows could not start the Windows Event Log Service on Local Computer. Error 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process. The Network connection the Internet does not start at boot time. Instead I have to click Diagnose & Repair and then click Restart the DHCP client service. Then it works.................
I have Vista with SP1 installed and have an error log filling with messages that say: The Cryptographic Services service terminated with the following error: The specified module could not be found. with the following details..........
Vista Enterprise x86 - installed - running on a Windows 2000 AD domain... runs fine for about 30-45 days then just stops working on the network. Diagnostic Policy Service just fails-the associated DLL service fails and won't start for lack of "sufficient rights/access denied". Anyone have any insight other than rebuild the box? I am going to ensure to place it in a container that doesn't receive any GPO policies, but how do I know/find out what is causing this to occur?
I have tried just about everything to resolve this. Running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit and this occurs anytime I try to browse for computers or printers.
Network is set to "Private" Network discovery "On" File Sharing "On" Firewall "Disabled" LLTD "Installed"
I have read that I need to setup a DNS server, however, I never did this in XP and never had a problem browsing for computers/hardware. What am I missing? What services are necessary for AD?
Does anyone know of a list of unnecessary services that can be turned off without harm--and speed up startup/opeation? I already have done a TrueImage restore one time and do not want to go through it again.
I am new to Vista. How do I delete sewrvices that startup? I can delete programs but not services. I want to delete a backup program from loading at startup. It is not in the list of programs at startup as seen in Windows Defender. I miss mscongfig!!
