My custom built laptop doesnt seem to want to connect to my home
network, but the internet cafe downtown has the same ISP and my laptop
connects just fine there. The laptop works fine at home wired in but
the wireless always returns the 169.x.x.x address. I will be posting
the ipconfig / all as soon as im home.

When I boot up my machine I get UAC prompting me to allow Explorer to run and the controls for my graphics card. Is there a way to permanently allow these programs to run? In other words, can you set up allowances for individual programs?

When I insert a USB drive it tries to assign itself to that same letter, which creates a conflict and I can't figure out how to access the USB drive. Is there some way I can direct it to another drive letter?
View 4 Replies View RelatedDamn PC games always have issues rising up for me. Well, I recently got World In Conflict, but singeplayer doesn't seem to work for me. Once the resources are loaded in a new game, it closes and the annoying "_________ has stopped working, windows is searching for a solution" window pops up. I tried installing the patch, but that didn't help either. I tried configuring Data Execution Prevention, and ran as administrator. The game is fairly new and it was mean to be compatible with Vista 32/64bit so I'm not sure what's wrong with it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have 2 computers, one with XP and one with Vista. I recently got DSL and bought a hub to connect both systems to the net. When I do this i cannot connect to the net with either system. On the XP I get an error about IP address conflict, the IP address is already in use. I have the hub closest to the XP system. The tech had me try to release then renew my IP address in CMD prompt on the Vista computer and it give me an error about stating that an IP address has not been assigned.

As I prefer to use my own antivrus product as well as Windows own firewall, I uninstalled McAfee. Although it didn't fully install, I removed the files left behind with the removal tool provided by McAfee. I installed my own antivirus product, aVast, and activated Windows firewall. If I look in Security Centre, the is a conflict warning saying that I have two firewalls activated. For some reason, McAfee is still shown as being present as both a firewall and antivirus protection. I don't know how this can be because McAfee is no longer on my computer. Furthermore I cannot find any way to remove the reference to McAfee.
View 8 Replies View RelatedJust just got the new Portal Demo through Steam. When I launch the game it starts for a few seconds then it crashes. Windows tells me that hl2.exe has a conflict, stopped working and has to close. It goes on to say that Windows will notify me if there is a solution. But unfortunatly there is none.

There are alot of people having trouble with this Portal game. Some say to disable Services. Some say certain virus programs have to be completely uninstalled. Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it while having similar specs as me?
I purchased a new system with Vista Home Premium and install MS OfficeXp. All of the MS Office programs installed and opened just fine except for MS Outlook, when I open MSOutlook, I receive an error message advising me that Windows VISTA encountered a problem and must close. The the Error message is "THE ORDINAL 6718 COULLD NOT BE LOCATED IN DLL MSV.DLL". MSOfficeXp including Outlook worked find with my "old" WindowsXp Pro system but there appears to be a conflict with Outlook 2002 and VISTA. I have updated VISTA and MSOfficeXp on the Microsoft Website
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter installing Office 2003 on a Dell 1330 with Vista Home Premium, the default mail tool changed, of course, from Thunderbird to Outlook. I uninstalled Outlook, and the default email tool changed to Windows Mail. I have tried using the Default Programs control panel and other means to change the default email tool back to Thunderbird, to no avail. Each time it starts it asks me whether I want Thunderbird to be the default. Each time I click yes, but the setting doesn't hold.
I have gone through all the usual steps to define Thunderbird as the default. In Windows Mail, the option to change it so that it is not the default is mysteriously grayed out. how to get around this? Windows Mail seems more like a virus to me than a legitimate piece of software. It doesn't even show up in the list of Windows services, so I can't even turn it off! What's so weird about this is that it all worked fine until I installed Office 2003 ... now, I can't change the default mail tool.
who use comodo firewall with media programs like dvd converters etc etc. Ive been trying to make a dvd of personal avi clips into a dvd, now the software i use it allok avi2dvd, however each time i convert the files which works fine, at the end of completion, the fireall pops up and basicly says its going to execute allok bla bla, it says if i use this application and trust it, then press allow, which ive done, ive also blocked it, anyway after that their is nooooo dvd files left at all, which normally it would create the dvd files for me where ive saved them to burn. is this a firewall issue? cause this is really annoying and ill rather not use comodo as a firewall if its going to do execute and delete the files ive just created...just makes no sence to me. iam lost

"The browser was unable to promote itself to master browser. The computer that currently believes it is the master browser is JAYS. My machine is NOT called JAYS."
I have forgotten the Username and Password for the Login ID... and it is not the default (Username: *blank* Password: admin). I have heard you can hold the reset button on the back of the wireless router but will this reset my wireless network? By that i mean... will i be able to connect with my laptop still through that wireless network or will i have to set it up again?
View 9 Replies View Relateda friend has a new sony vaio with vista home premium installed. For some reason it will not connect to my netgear router wirelessly. I have tried everything. I am however not too hot on Vista as this is my first time with it. The adaptor says its on, but when you interegate it and ask why it wont connect it keeps telling me "switch on wireless adaptor capability". In the network connections it is on, the switch on the front right is swiitched on and the wireless network light on the front is on. The network is fine and working as i have my laptop connected to it. All security is present and entered. It seems to be the computer as it doesnt find any networks when there are loads in the area. Am i missing something exceptionally obvious? Does Vista have another "on" switch for this adaptor?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using a windows Vista 32 bit home premium notebook computer for which the wireless network detection has stopped working. I updated the driver for the built in wireless card with out any results. I also tried a plug in wireless card which windows detected and said was working properly and this did not work either. This leaves me to believe that something is wrong with the OS. I can get on the internet via dialup modem and also by the ethernet connection with a DSL modem. I have been to several hotspots that I know have wifi and no networks show up. All critical windows updates have been installed.

I have a problem with my wireless connection... I have a compaq and Dell610 on XP that works well using Wireless + WPA PSK, I recently bought an ASUS and I have only been able to connect twice wirelessly for about 3-4 hours. I have not been able to replicate this for the last 5 days.

I got a new N router and a new laptop and i used the N setting with a 5gz channel or whatever i go to speedtest.net and i get the speed of 28,000 kbs. Im like holy **** thats what i get when i use ethernet. What are your guys' opinions on this cus to me i never thought that was possible.

I tried with my XP Laptop and i got at around 11mb
They are both in the same location.

Recently I found out the wireless is not able to connect to internet. It shows strong signal, and the driver is still original(not update) . Device status also show that it is working properly.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIs there something I'm missing with Vista and wireless, I have to different wireless networks and I now have a Vista laptop in each network that I can't connect to. All firmware/drivers is up to date on the laptop and the routers and I still can't get them to connect but I have no problem with the XP. Side note, I have had both laptops connected and surfing the Web and having access to network shares and what not but they have both since been dropped. I'd be happy to just focus on one of them.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a home network with a linksys wrt54gs router and 3 pc's running XP home. home and pro. I got a new Vista computer and inserted a linksys wmp54gs wireless adapter into it. I updated the router firmware a week before I got the new computer. I connected to the internet even though I had the wrong workgroup name. In attempting to find the other computers I fixed the workgroup name so it was the same and tried other things to no avail. I updated the adapter drivers because I found it had generic ones and yesterday I installed Vista SP1.
Now I can't get the internet anymore, much less file sharing. I disabled all firewalls for awhile. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON, Network set to Private, File Sharing: ON, Public Folder Sharing: ON, Password Protected: OFF, Media Sharing: OFF. I've run the repair wizard a number of different ways. I don't know enough to fool with Wireless Network Connection Properties unless someone holds my hand.

I have a Vista Home Premium 32bit Desktop and just purchased a Vista Home Preium 64bit Laptop and I would like to create a non-wireless (yes I know, but I am not ready for a wireless network at this time) home
