I'm running the Belarc Advisor for a full inventory of my system and it is telling me that there are a few Critical and Important updates I must have marked as hidden a long time ago. I'm interested in getting a clean bill of health from Belarc and want to install all of the previously missed updates. How can I install one given update without restoring all the hidden updates?
I installed Vista home premium OEM about 9 months ago and today I got a balloon message saying "I have 8 days left to install Vista. Back up all important data" The balloon messages have appeared recently, but I wasn't quick enough to read it all and I didn't believe it anyway. Just to see, I went through the process of reinstalling, but it was going to be a new install wiping all files and data from my C drive, so I cancelled the install. Would anyone know why this is happening after 9 months and is there anyway I can get around a new install? I have been using Acronis to back up, can I use it to put my settings/files/data back, or will I end up with balloon messages again?
My Microsoft Mail in Vista moves received and sent emails in a very odd manner. Rather than keep emails sorted strictly by date received and/or sent, the emails are moved. For example, if I reply to an email received and it had a subject line, a return email may be buried deep based on who sent the original and the subject. This makes finding the emails very difficult. I would like all emails received and sent to be sorted based on date received and/or sent, similar to Outlook.
Use the following 5 steps to reduce compatibility issues and improve Vista performance. Update all your drivers in the following sequence. If you are unsure of what drivers you need and where to get them then open a new help topic in the Drivers Forum.
Update the components that are already a part of Vista. Run "Windows Update" and install all "Important" and Recommended" updates then reboot. Then install the updates listed below and reboot before running "Windows Update" again and installing all "Important" and "Recommended" updates..........
I'm running Vista Ultimate on my present computer, have full installation dvd. I'm buying a new Dell computer that comes with Vista Basic installed. Can I move Vista Basic from the Dell computer to my old computer and install my Ultimate on the Dell?
O/S Vista Home Basic 32 bit. I had some IE problems which were also interferring with my printer causing it not to print. MS/MVP, PA Bear, helped me solve the IE problem in the IE group, which in turn solved the printer not working problem. Now I just have 1 little glitch. The printer will NOT print as long as UAC is enabled but WILL print when UAC is turned off. I did post this question in the printer group 4 days ago but have had no responses.
So my question now is this: Is it important for me to have UAC enabled? In the household there is only 1 computer & 1 printer (both wireless) & I am the only one who knows how to use the computer. I am not worried about people tampering around with my computer in my home. I'm a little foggy as to exactly what UAC controls but from what I can make out it seems it only involves preventing someone from making unauthorized changes to my computer.
Speaking from your experience with x64 OS and various programs, does it make a noticeable difference when it's running in 32bit mode or if it's running native? It can be any kind of programs, instant messaging, playing games, firewalls, browsers... etc etc. I want to ask a specific question, Should I go with 32bit mode firefox, or minefield? Is the 64bit optimization worth it to deal with a beta program? or would 32bit mode firefox just be easier to use.
I did a clean install using the tutorial as a guide on a 64 bit machine. It was seamless and worked perfectly. Now I have 70 "important" updates, but I am hesitant because I don't know which ones I should install first. They are not dated as far as I can see unless I look at each one individually. I have downloaded to my computer but not installed any yet. Using SP1 from one year ago.
I turned on my laptop, and there was no wireless internet. Turns out a lot of important services have stopped and I cant turn them on.
They include:
DHCP Client Diagnostic Policy Service IPsec Policy Agent Network List Service Network Location Awareness Office Source Engine Windows Firewall Windows Time
I managed a workaround by defining an IP manually to my wireless card, and at least it connected to the internet, but DHCP is still stopped. So is the Diagnostic service, so the "repair button" wont work either.
When I go to services and try to start them, I get the error, "Access is denied", or "The dependency service or group failed to start".
My Network sharing centre is saying the same thing. Firewall is also disabled, error is "Security centre cant turn on windows firewall"...
I'm getting a new Hard Drive for a friend of mine and am going to build it into his pc. However, I must admit that I do not really know what is important when choosing a hard drive (in the specs I mean...) 7200 rpm is about all I think that is necessary... Hard drive for about 100 bucks.
trouble with dream scene. i have downloaded almost all important updates including dream scene but i cannot use it, because when u press browse in desktop background there is no video to select... what is trouble? didn't i activate it or something??? i cannot understand.. my system is windows Vista ultimate 64. and by the way.. when u i want to switch on or off features the list is empty even after i installed stardock software it cannot
I have lost 2 important folders saved on my desktop while i was downloading a game from a disk. I have tried system restore but to no avail. I am at a complete loss.
I purchased Vista Premium with SP1 which came with both the 32 bit and 64 bit dvd's. I'm currently running the V64 version but I have a few needed apps that just won't run on the 64 bit system. I was wondering if I could install the x32 bit and set up my computer as a multiboot setup using the same key or would I have to buy another key to have both versions of the OS on the same computer?
Purchased a copy of windows vista ultimate and installed the 32 bit bit version and everything runs perfect, however when i try to install the 64 bit version my computer freezes either during the installation or right after the install is complete.
Ive tried everything. Installed on different hard drive, used different memory, different power supply, different CD rom drive, absolutely nothing will get the installation to not freeze. The windows event viewer is useless. I even tried 3 different install cd's. It's not overheating as far as i can tell either. Like i said vista 32 runs perfect so i cant understand whats going on? Should I RMA my motherboard? Ever heard of a cpu being defective in this way
Only just discovered this forum - looks really interesting. I currently have an OEM copy of Vista 32bit which I run quite happily, but would like to install x64 on another hard disc to test it out etc. I can borrow an x64 installation disc from a friend, can I install and activate x64 using my 32 bit key? Like I said, its the same system but will be installed on another hard disc. Will it allow me to activate? Or do I have to buy another copy of x64 OEM?
I have an old computer on which I have installed my purchased copy of Windows Vista Ultimate edition. It has reached its end-of-life and I am about to decommission it. I want to purchase a customized desktop and install the same copy of Windows Vista Ultimate on it after removing it from the old machine (formatting old machine's hard drive). Can I install Windows Vista on another computer after decommissioning the one on which it was installed previously? Is this legal? Do I need to notify Microsoft about it? How can this be achieved? Do I need to re-activate the copy of Windows Vista?
i have a problem with my photoshop Cs4 installer. everytime i go to install, a window comes up and says "checking system profile" it gets to about 90% then Freezes. Is this common
I had to reinstall Vista due to malware that I could not get off my computer. I could not do a repair, and now Vista is new on my system. The problem is that I now cannot activate it, and I get a notice that says that I need to enter a new number. I do not think that I need to, but I don't know how to reactivate. I called Microsoft, but the person (honestly) hung up on me.
I have a laptop running Vista ultimate. I want to create a dual boot with win2003 server so that I can install MOSS 2007 on it (studying for certification). Tried using the disk management utility in Vista to create partition for this and it doesn't let me shrink a partition in order to create a new partition for Win 2003. There are 60gb available for this new partition but when I go to 'shrink' I get a zero for available mb. I know there are some issues regarding the loader. Any advice in how to do this successfully? I dont want to lose any data on the vista O/S part of the box.
I recently go a new PC and had geek squad install some virus/etc software on it a remove gateway branded 'programs'...when I turned on the computer for the first time it seemed as though GSquad had installed everything as I had access to the internet, download photos from my camera, access Microsoft programs etc. When I tried to open the backup hard drive that I had from my laptop it said I needed to install Vista to proceed.
So I started to, following the prompts where it said that it would back up my previous files that I had, and it took several hours. Now that I have Vista, I realize that i don't have any of the picture files that I previously saved. I know I'm foolish not to have backed up the computer myself before the install but I didn't think it would erase everything. Normally I wouldn't be concerned but I just got engaged and we captured the moment in those photos. I know there may be no hope but I just thought someone out there might have a solution....

I have a ThinkCentre PC with Windows XP Home installed on on it. I've got another machine that is currently running Vista. If I make a install cd from the XP machine, can I install it on my other Compaq machine that is running vista (it came with XP Media Center Edition 2005 but it had all this crap preloaded onto it). Or, can I reformat the XP Media Center Edition PC, and then make an install dvd out of that (i.e. will it remove the crap that Compaq put on it?).
My computer just died, with a complex Vista installation on a 250 GB drive. I have a replacement unit on its way, but is there any way to transfer the drive with the Vista install to the new computer and get a working system? My Vista is a full retail copy. I'm now working on XP from my backup machine, an old Dell Optiplex GX200, with a 733 MHZ P3 that's not capable of running Vista. I could reinstall Vista, but would lose an awful lot of data and installed programs.
i have problem when i try to install windows xp. i have laptop hp parvilion dx6650us entertainment notbook pc, vista install on it but i want to install windows xp. when windows xp boot i got this message. Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. so I finally said the heck with it.. and I disabled the UAC.. becuase it's very very irritating for it to stop EVERYTHING I do on my system.. But, every single time I restart my Machine I get the little popup, and the notification that it's been changed and the little RED X warning in system tray. I don't like seein a bad mark when nothing is wrong.. so I went into the setting and found a place where I could click do not notify, but show Icon.. so now the popup is gone, but it's still there.. is there ANY way I can completely get rid of it so It doesn't bother me every singe time I restart my system... just a thought.. let me kno please.
Is data execution protection supposed to notify me when it stops a program from running? The only "notice" I get is that nothing happens when I click a program's shortcut. Now that I've learned the signs (or lack thereof) of DEP in action I know when to tell it to allow a certain program.
I downloaded and am using IE 8. A few times a week, however, I get that half screen pop up from microsoft telling me that I should update. I received my IE8 through automatic update. Any way to stop this harassment?
