Move Installation: Transfer The Drive With The Vista Install To The New Computer ?
May 22, 2009My computer just died, with a complex Vista installation on a 250 GB drive. I have a replacement unit on its way, but is there any way to transfer the drive with the Vista install to the new computer and get a working system? My Vista is a full retail copy. I'm now working on XP from my backup machine, an old Dell Optiplex GX200, with a 733 MHZ P3 that's not capable of running Vista. I could reinstall Vista, but would lose an awful lot of data and installed programs.

I was under the impression that the necessary software for the transfer and Synchronization was in Vista Windows, but having connected the computers with a transfer cable (which was installed as new hardware on both computers) nothing further happened although I was supposed to get instructions on the Standby computer how to proceed with the transfers.

Mar 23, 2008I am at the point where my XP Pro install is probably due a good blowing away and re-installing. I am aware that just upgrading XP Pro to Vista will be very time consuming (took well over 3 hours when I went from my original XP pro to the first release about a year ago and lots of stuff was messed up and I ended up reformatting and starting again with a clean install). This is my conceptual plan:
* This time I want to back up my settings with the "file & settings transfer
wizard" on the XP box to one of my server shares.
* Back up all my important document stuff to the server.
* Then I will format everything on my PC and clean install Vista Ultimate.
* Finally restore my settings back from the server using the Vista FSTW
Presumably the Vista FSTW equivalent can read the XP versions files, or
should I expect troubles trying to do this?

But now it is very easy for me to do with my iTunes and iPod, I can easily transfer data between my iPod nano and iPhone, backup my iPod data in my computer and put songs and videos from my computer to my iPod/iPhone without iTunes.

Mar 26, 2008As SP1 looms, it's probably time to go back to Vista after I tried it when on the Beta and RC releases and had a few problems with compatibility with other bits of kit. I am at the point where my XP Pro install is probably due a good blowing away and re-installing. Jun 15, 2008I am attempting to transfer files & settings using the Belkin Easy Transfer cable from an XP computer to a Vista computer. All starts well by showing that the two computers are connected. But after finding the files and settings and providing the amount of data to be transferred, it starts gathering information but then shows a flashing disconnection icon in the upper right of both computers' transfer windows and freezes. This happens at a different place each time, but early in the procedure (after about 10 minutes). Would anyone have any advice? I have done everything by the book, as far as I'm aware.

Nov 30, 2007Purchased a copy of windows vista ultimate and installed the 32 bit bit version and everything runs perfect, however when i try to install the 64 bit version my computer freezes either during the installation or right after the install is complete.
Ive tried everything. Installed on different hard drive, used different memory, different power supply, different CD rom drive, absolutely nothing will get the installation to not freeze. The windows event viewer is useless. I even tried 3 different install cd's. It's not overheating as far as i can tell either. Like i said vista 32 runs perfect so i cant understand whats going on? Should I RMA my motherboard? Ever heard of a cpu being defective in this way

I currently have an OEM copy of Vista 32bit which I run quite happily, but would like to install x64 on another hard disc to test it out etc. I can borrow an x64 installation disc from a friend, can I install and activate x64 using my 32 bit key? Like I said, its the same system but will be installed on another hard disc. Will it allow me to activate? Or do I have to buy another copy of x64 OEM?

Tried using the disk management utility in Vista to create partition for this and it doesn't let me shrink a partition in order to create a new partition for Win 2003. There are 60gb available for this new partition but when I go to 'shrink' I get a zero for available mb. I know there are some issues regarding the loader. Any advice in how to do this successfully? Now that I have Vista, I realize that i don't have any of the picture files that I previously saved. I know I'm foolish not to have backed up the computer myself before the install but I didn't think it would erase everything. Normally I wouldn't be concerned but I just got engaged and we captured the moment in those photos. I know there may be no hope but I just thought someone out there might have a solution....

Creating Windows Install Disc From OEM Computer
Jun 7, 2009I have a ThinkCentre PC with Windows XP Home installed on on it. I've got another machine that is currently running Vista. If I make a install cd from the XP machine, can I install it on my other Compaq machine that is running vista (it came with XP Media Center Edition 2005 but it had all this crap preloaded onto it). Or, can I reformat the XP Media Center Edition PC, and then make an install dvd out of that (i.e. will it remove the crap that Compaq put on it?).
