View 7 RepliesI just got a new computer with Vista 64 (SP1 included) and want a good AV and AS program. When spending $900+ for a computer, I don't mind spending $40/year for good protection (less then the price of a Big Mac per month)?
From the reading I've done everyone has been recommending ESET NOD32, which seems like the best protection + the least amount of Vista compatibility issues. When I checked out the website I saw that ESET has an upgraded version out that includes AS software. From my knowledge, NOD32 is just AV and I would then have to find a good AS program too right? Where as ESET Smart Security includes NOD32 and AS features. Looking for feedback & suggestions. Most of the threads that come up when I search are people who want "free" software? I want "great" software and have learned that the two terms often don't come hand-in-hand; especially when dealing with Vista!
In few days the license of my ESET NOD32 Antivirus expires.
So im thinking this time to buy and try the
ESET Smart Security v4.0.437
Did you ever try that?
If yes,did you ever face any problems/erros with it?
Any conflicts?
Are you happy with it?
Whats ur opinion?

Using Windows Mail..I can receive links from others but when I *send* a LINK..(www.yahoo.com' //www.espn.com/), my receipients can not see the site. Neither can I for that matter when I go look at the email I just sent. I'm perplexed by this as I have followed answers in the forumn and clicked default on windows mail and even went to security tab under windows mail and unchecked block images.

View 9 Replies View RelatedHow do I completely block internet access for a program on Windows Vista? Is it possible? I have already tried creating a rule on the Firewall With Advanced Security for both inbound and outbound access using the "New Rule..." wizard. I choose "Program", next I choose the program's location, next I choose "Block the connection", then I check all three profiles and finally a name for the rule. I have created testing rules for both IE and Firefox but they could still access the internet (i.e, the webpages were still loading).
The columns on the firewall control panel show that the rules are enabled, the action is block and all other columns are "Any". I thought it would completely prevent the program from accessing the internet, but it doesn't. Could you guys give me a hand? Is there a way I could make a program to not see the internet (or any network for that matter) at all?
This has just come in, and was captured by my phishing filter. I have since deleted it as I suspect its authenticity; If it is legit, then the sender is doing the very action that Users are being firmly and constantly warned against.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to help out my sister on her laptop (Compaq Vista 32bit). Here are the problems:
Can not access Windows Security Center.. It comes up on the tool bar red with the X. When you try to open it either off the tool bar or even through the Control Center you get: A "open with" window to select the program to open "rundll32.exe". I have tried the tutuorial on this site to change security center from disabled to automatic, this did not work, it defaults back to disabled. Will not start up the Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus program automatically on startup. You must manaul start and either run as adminstrator to start or go through the "open with window" process. All program starts require to go through the "open with window" approach and some that does not work and you need to right click on the program and "run as administrator" to start the program (i.e. intenet exployer). I have manually run Microsoft Security Essentials and removed numerous virus and trojans.
I am familar with XP and Windows 7, not Vista...
I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop that runs Vista. Can you recommend Norton Security or McAfee?
View 9 Replies View RelatedSomething got in and hijacked my ESET security suite and basically took over my entire computer. Almost all of my drivers are disabled and it has control of pretty much every file. I used hijack to find the files, and I notice the registry changes. It wont even let me run a virus scan in safe mode. I was looking at the registry and although normally I wouldn't go near it, I am just erasing the changes that were given to the keys. Then I will try to run a virus scan again. What else can I do to make sure everything is out? I have the scan logs as well, I just wasn't sure where to put them.

So I went out and bought ACS' CryptoMate USB token and client in order to get two-factor authentication working on Vista Enterprise and guess what? It doesn't work. View 9 Replies View RelatedI just want to share with you my thoughts about smart card authentication implementation in Vista. I know that smart card logon, also known as strong authentication or two- actor authentication, can be performed on a machine that is connected to a domain. And in Vista SP1 it's been added the support for biometric factor authentication so that, with the appropriate security tokens, strong three-factor authentication can be performed through Kerberos on machines connected to a domain.
Said that I really can't understand why Microsoft doesn't give a standard option, included natively in her oss, to enable strong authentication in stand alone machines that are not connected to a domain. I try to explain in details what I mean. It happens often, for security reasons, that companies have stand alone pcs not connected to the internet and to the company domain. From my point of view achieving a strong authentication on a stand alone machine is not so complicated; Let's think at this scenario:.................
I have to set up a smart card reader on Vista Home Premium 64 bit for a user, but cannot get it to be recognized. It is an SCR331, about 6 years old. I have downloaded Vista64 drivers from SCMMicro but though the card reader will work on an XP machine, it will not work on Vist64. When I install it, or reboot and it detects new hardware, and tell it where I downloaded the drivers it says this folder does not contain the necessary drivers. If I look at the 32bit drivers online it says there is a firmware upgrade but I do not want to apply that and have the reader stop working on the XP machine as well.

View 9 Replies View RelatedCan Defender block acces to a program? I want to block kid's access to IE7, and in my old XP computer I could do that with ZoneAlarm Pro. Since I just got a new Vista, I am trying to use all the Vista stuff that's built in, rather than going to another solution.
let's say i want to block www.disney.com (199.181.132.250). For that, i enter following command into the shell:
route add 199.181.132.250 192.168.1.254
Subnet is 192.168.1.0/24
192.168.1.254 is unused
In XP the ip and dns is unreachable by browser now. Thats fine. But in vista the same procedure doesn't work. It seems there's just an additional short lag and then the site appears anyway. My guess is vista falls back to a valid route after sensing the invalid route but i don't know for sure.

What happened to my regular msn email application? As of right now, it tells
me that there has been a parental control block on my email, and I can not
receive or send emails. I have numerous emails in que that I would like to
open, and it looks like maybe this stupid microsoft public windows program.
Which by the way, I know nothing about. Please do whatever you have to, to
remove the block on my msn email program. I would like to know that you did
get this message, but am not sure if you could even send it to me. I have
had nothing but problems after problems with your sloppy vista program.
Please tell me how I can get rid of it - I'd rather have XP.
Whenever I press the Caps Lock or Bloc Num buttons, the keyboard gets disabled, and it doesn't work anymore.. I have to restart the system. I installed the last windows vista update few days ago, and also my touchpad now doesn't work (it's not a problem of drivers update), I don't know if this one can be the reason of the keyboard problem.
