ESET NOD32 Or ESET Smart Security?
Jul 2, 2008
I just got a new computer with Vista 64 (SP1 included) and want a good AV and AS program. When spending $900+ for a computer, I don't mind spending $40/year for good protection (less then the price of a Big Mac per month)?
From the reading I've done everyone has been recommending ESET NOD32, which seems like the best protection + the least amount of Vista compatibility issues. When I checked out the website I saw that ESET has an upgraded version out that includes AS software. From my knowledge, NOD32 is just AV and I would then have to find a good AS program too right? Where as ESET Smart Security includes NOD32 and AS features. Looking for feedback & suggestions. Most of the threads that come up when I search are people who want "free" software? I want "great" software and have learned that the two terms often don't come hand-in-hand; especially when dealing with Vista!

Something got in and hijacked my ESET security suite and basically took over my entire computer. Almost all of my drivers are disabled and it has control of pretty much every file. I used hijack to find the files, and I notice the registry changes. It wont even let me run a virus scan in safe mode. I was looking at the registry and although normally I wouldn't go near it, I am just erasing the changes that were given to the keys. Then I will try to run a virus scan again. What else can I do to make sure everything is out? I have the scan logs as well, I just wasn't sure where to put them.

I was just going to post and see if anyone has heard of anything about Nero recently, or anything about there programs having viruses..
I've had the same Nero 7 now on 3 different computers. I got it FREE Nero 7 Premium a while back. (I don't remember why) but it is NOT illegal, it is not hacked with a keygen or something like that, that a free AV program would find as a false positive. It's just a normal Nero 7 Premium.
I've ran the same NOD32 on this computer for over a year now, with the same Nero 7 and never had a problem. but this morning I woke up to an Error, and a Virus Warning. Threat Detected in my Nero folders. something about cad/0060H795.cad or something like that.
It gave me the option to clean, and or delete. I cleaned it. But this is the first attack my current BIG RIG has ever had. So I just want to look into it to be safe.

I've got a new Dell laptop that came with bundled McCaffrie (sp?) AV and firewall. I want to install NOD32, and it's my understanding that I have to unistall the existing AV first. do I activate the new firewall (Windows) before or after I install NOD32? I am obviously new and clueless to computers and security issues.

It is currently used to access my DoD e-mail and for e-signature authorization, and has the ability to logon to DoD owned systems & networks. I have a Dell D630 with a built in smart card reader and I have been trying to use ACS' ACOS5 smart card for authentication, which I have had zero success. So I went out and bought ACS' CryptoMate USB token and client in order to get two-factor authentication working on Vista Enterprise and guess what? It doesn't work. Here's what I have: At the Vista logon screen, the smart card icon has the following error: "The card requires drivers that are not present on the system. Please try another card".

I just want to share with you my thoughts about smart card authentication implementation in Vista. I know that smart card logon, also known as strong authentication or two- actor authentication, can be performed on a machine that is connected to a domain. And in Vista SP1 it's been added the support for biometric factor authentication so that, with the appropriate security tokens, strong three-factor authentication can be performed through Kerberos on machines connected to a domain.
Said that I really can't understand why Microsoft doesn't give a standard option, included natively in her oss, to enable strong authentication in stand alone machines that are not connected to a domain. I try to explain in details what I mean. It happens often, for security reasons, that companies have stand alone pcs not connected to the internet and to the company domain. From my point of view achieving a strong authentication on a stand alone machine is not so complicated; Let's think at this scenario:.................

I have to set up a smart card reader on Vista Home Premium 64 bit for a user, but cannot get it to be recognized. It is an SCR331, about 6 years old. I have downloaded Vista64 drivers from SCMMicro but though the card reader will work on an XP machine, it will not work on Vist64. When I install it, or reboot and it detects new hardware, and tell it where I downloaded the drivers it says this folder does not contain the necessary drivers. If I look at the 32bit drivers online it says there is a firmware upgrade but I do not want to apply that and have the reader stop working on the XP machine as well.

I downloaded Nod32 which is a virus protection program. I scanned my computer while I was asleep. The program cleaned my computer and everything worked fine. I use a program called xfire which is a messenger program kind of like MSN or AIM. A few hours after the scan was completed I tried to launch xfire. I got this error: "Com Initialization Failed" That is all that the error window says, and the window is simply titled "Error". Once I close the error window the program does show up in my task bar, however it seems to be slightly greyed out. When I right click its icon on the task bar the drop down menu comes up but is entirely blacked out. There is no text or anything it is all black. When i click something in the menu a new error comes up and kind of flashes on my screen, but has no text and not even a title. It is just a small blank window that flashes and then goes away. After that xfire disappears from my taskbar.
When I launch the program after the "Com initialization failed' error comes up and is closed, a strange box appears on my screen. I can only see it on my wallpaper, it doesn't show up on top of other programs. It is a white rectangle that is quite small. Maybe 120 x 40 and in the center of this rectangle is a very very small light blue square. To the left of the light blue square is a larger grey square. I have never seen an error like this before and have no idea what caused it. Other people on the xfire forums have had the same error, but I have tried all of the suggestions on those forums and nothing has worked. I assume nod32 changed something in my settings because xfire always worked prior to installing nod32. I did, however, uninstall nod32, and that did not fix the problem. And yes I am running as administrator.

My computer is running the concistency check. It's at stage 3 and when it's almost complete it's starts to "replace invalid security Id with default security id for file ******" it's been doing this for a while now and I was wondering what I can do to speed it up. It's currently at 170000, and if I try to restart the computer the login screen will not load if I skip the disk check.

Cannot reply, forward or send attachments. Have worked on this for 2 days within the Windows Mail Forum. Something is causing a delay in getting mail to the server. This appears to have something to do with security. Has anyone seen a resolution?
Details -
Unable to send mail problem was sporadic. Had Norton 2007. Took it in to tech support for service and they upgraded to 2008. At forum suggestion, deleted Norton and used the symantec utility to remove the remaining pieces. Replaced Norton with CA Suite. One person thought the Norton proxy may not be able to be removed................

I moved my computer (Vista Business x32) from a domain (no longer available) to my work group. My domain account had local admin privileges on the machine so I was able to move the machine from the domain to the local work group (domain, admin, domain admin account are all gone). However, I forgot to create a local machine account before I rebooted and now I can't log in at all.I can log in or would I need to reinstall the OS?

I have Kaspersky and it seems to be ok. But it is very weird and pretty hard to use. Im not sure if i want it anymore but i need to be 100% sure of another program before i uninstall the other one. I also wanted to know if it is possible to have 2 security protection on your computer at once. I would only want this because i would never want to have my computer being used without virus protection.

I have Vista Ultimate 64bit. I have all the updates including SP1 downloaded from Microsoft site. Up until yesterday everything has been working fine for the past month since I built a new system. Now all of a sudden my computer is crashing on me. No BSOD. Just shuts down and reboots. Last night this occured 5 times in the space of 4 hours..
Looking in my events log all I can see occuring at the times of the crashes is this information: Code integrity determined that the image hash of a file is not valid. The file could be corrupt due to unauthorized modification or the invalid hash could indicate a potential disk device error.
File Name: DeviceHarddiskVolume1WindowsSystemdrivers cpip.sys
I don't use windows firewall as I use the firewall built into Trend Micro Internet Security 2008. Checking though that programs logs shows nothing happening at the time of the crashes. After googling this and looking on Microsoft's site I am stumped at what I can do to resolve this. I do have windows updates on automatic and I recall an update occuring 2 days ago.

Does anybody know of a "Shutdown Password" facility I can use which prevents this from happening?- I know I'm still at risk from the power supply being switched off.
