Explorer On Start And Context Menus And Long Starting Programs

Jul 20, 2009

Explorer is no longer working properly in a few ways. Programs often take a long time to start and display “(Not responding)” on the their top window frames. Right click menu sometimes takes a long time to appear while explorer freezes. The explorer window itself is sometimes quite long to change the display when I change folder (this is far from often, but happens).

The first window to appear when we click on the Start Menu, the one with the large icons, is usually OK, but sometimes it does the same as the “All Programs” second window;

Here, the folders do not open and on Task Manager I can watch explorer taking up all the CPU available resources immediately after I pass to “All Programs”;

However, if I click “Back” (explorer stops abnormally using all CPU resources);

Then I click “All Programs” again and the previously clicked folder is now already open, but explorer is again up with CPU resources, so if now I click on a subfolder or on another folder, it all repeats again.

At this moment I don’t have backups to install.

Enable Context Menus: Can Not Drag Icon

Mar 4, 2009

Running Vista Home Premium x64 SP1. I have all my Start Menu links under my user account (not all users). I also have "Enable context menus and dragging and dropping" option enabled. I can right-click on items and rename/delete them, but when I try to drag an icon from one folder in the Start Menu to another folder, my cursor turns to a red "no can do" symbol and I can't drop the icon in the new folder.

Starting Without Explorer.exe, Have To Run Manually From Start Menu

Oct 15, 2009

vista starting without explorer.exe, so have to run explorer.exe manually from the task manager to get start menu and everything running normally.... I am not sure of the right category, because this may be is related to virus, driver and system restore issues, please move in the right section, following is the system configuration and the history: also sorry for the long message, but I am really stuck here and if you could spare some time to look into this issue, I tried to provide as much history and details on the issue not just to help you understand my problem but also as a warning for other users who may run into this issue in the future.. it may be a known issue and I just happen to run into it still I would like to provide details and history of what happened, if you help me I will be in your dept for sure!! and you may ask my help anytime if you need something System configuration: my friend has a toshiba satellite latop, with vista premuim. it can preloaded on the laptop. I am not sure of the exact system model and processor but if it's relevant I can provide that info, but I suspect there is some ASUS components/drivers in the system, later I will explain why I think so, as I said I can provide system model or CPU or hardisk space but at this point I feel it's not relivant, cause it's an issue with explorer.exe right now but if you think it's required I will ask for that info, please understand I am giving support over seas from this user but we are in touch via msn and phone so if you want any additional info, even screen shots I will try to provide. History: the Problem started when she called me, and showed me a screen shot of AVG anti-virus free edition trying to remove some virususes off her computer. she said the virus came from a USB driver she borrowed from a friend. and AVG was complaining that it is not able to remove the virus because she has to buy the full AVG version. this sounded wierd, I tried to verify she is using the free AVG but I am not sure, so I ask her to uninstall AVG and try another anti-virus, first thing came to mind is avast, so I asked her to install the latest free version I think it's 4.8, but it turns out it's not compatabile with vista or her system and after some searching on the net I discover a known issue with avast/vista conflicting with some asus drivers and I suspect it is the same case, because she is also like the others reported, getting a blank screen and not able to logon. but before uninstalling avast from safe mode, I tried another suggestion ( I was not aware that avast was responsible at that point in time yet ) so I suggested she try last known good configuration. did that, but still she got blank screen again ( because avast was still there ) so I suggested she go to safe mode and try to uninstall avast ( this is after I found the issue with avast conflicing with asus drivers on some machines with vista ), after going into safe mode, she gets a view of her documents and no start button, after some questions on the phone I figured out that explorer.exe is not running, so asked her to try to run explorer.exe from the task manager, when she did that she got the start button, and was able to goto control panel and uninstall avast and then she rebooted vista. after reboot she was able to go into vista, but explorer.exe again won't run, unless she goto task manager and run it manualy everytime she reboots. I thought I'd do some research why is explorer.exe not running when the system is restarting, I thought maybe I could add it to the system startup or something, but not sure where would be the best place do to that, msconfig? or startup folder for that user? if someone can give me some advice that would be great. she already backed up her files now and ready for a re-format but I am really embarased would like to find a solution to this problem anyway, as now she think I might be an idiot for my poor selection of antivurs software, It's strange I never heard of this compatability issues and I installed avast on vista on other toshiba latops and many systems and I never had this issue ever, I suggested she try another anti-virus but she is afraid now and wants to re-format... and take her time which I understand, but in the mean time I want to try and fix this explorer.exe not runing.

Long Blackouts / Screen Freezing While Starting A Game Or Minimizing It.

Jun 11, 2009

so on almost EVERY game I play, when I start it up, black screen, (Which isnt that much of a problem, i mean starting a game can take a long time.) and I enjoy it. I need to do something, check something, or do anything non game wise, I have to minimize. Well, here is where I get frustrated. I alt+tab, alt+delete, anything, even open up task manager, I get either a black screen, or a frozen screen (depending on the game) for about 30 seconds. Nothing I can do. After it is done pissing me off, my computer goes to desktop, or whatever, and then its fine. I go back to the game? Another freeze. I am running a Vista Home Premium x64 dell computer, with intel quad core, and nVidia Geforce 9800 GTX+ graphics card. (Im not exactly sure on how to fill out specs, so feel free to ask for anything you might need to know)

Re-order Windows Explorer Context Menu

Mar 28, 2009

Something I've pondered for a long time, and never actually gotten around to looking into: How the $%#! does Windows Explorer decide what order to put the context menu items in? Does anyone know how to re-order it? As far as I can tell, it's completely willy-nilly. It even seems to change from right-click to right-click. (Right-click on a few different folders. You'll see the same menu items, but sometimes the order will change for no apparent reason.)

Start-up Screen Logo For Long

Jul 6, 2009

I have a GW M6307 2gigs ram with VHP 32 bit. Over the last several days on start-up the computer will show the GW screen for about 150 sec. then boot normally. I did do a Java update just before this started and have since uninstalled and reinstalled Java with no problem. I ran malware bytes(no issues) SFC ( 2 files repaired from log) and CHK disc. After shutting down for 10min. and a start-up the GW logo was normal(6 sec) with swift boot. This lasted 2 days. I ran SFC again and that appeared to fix the issue again for 2 days.

There appears to be nothing wrong anywere,in fact the box works great. All my drivers and bios are up to date.

It's more of a PIA then a problem....What would be the possible causes for the box to hang on the GW logo for so long??

Windows Vista Won't Start Up, Prevent It From Starting Up

Sep 27, 2009

Windows Vista won't start up anymore. Various problems occur during the start up that prevent it from starting up. It occurred around 3pm or 4pm today when i was just on the internet and talking with my friend on MSN and then BAM! BSOD! The PC rebooted itself and came back up, but then it began giving me a looping 'windows explorer.exe has stopped working' error. So I rebooted again.

I tried Last known good configuration and it didn't work. Gives me a flashing BSOD and the PC restarts itself. Attempts to boot into normal mode sometimes brings BSOD and sometimes just stays black before the circular Windows vista logo that should appear.......

Start Play Game Got Stuck On The Starting Screen

About a few months ago I can still play games like Combat Arms, Call of Duty 4, BioShock, and Dead Space at minimal performance. But now, I reinstalled the game to play it again and it just got stuck on the Starting Screen or just plain BLACK Screen! I can still play some MMORPG like Sword of the New World: Granado Espada or the recently Closed-Beta, Luna Online just fine. I don't know what I did wrong with my Dell XPS Laptop.

More Memory: Does Seem To Take A Long Time To Start Up And To Load / Run Large Files?

Feb 3, 2010

I have a Toshiba laptop with 2Gb Ram, running Vista. I have no major problems, but my pc does seem to take a long time to start up and to load / run large files, and sometimes seems to go into a coma. I use CCleaner and Defraggler, and I uninstall/delete anything that I dont need. But my pc does seem to be struggling sometimes. I could add another 2Gb Ram, or I could upgrade to Windows 7 (which I read has much lower overheads??). Or perhaps I should buy a new PC? My question is, how do I decide what the best route is??

Long Delay When Displaying Icons In Start Menu Subfolders

Mar 21, 2009

The Start Menu is extremely long opening folders and sbfolders. The magnifying glass turns round and round. It can take over one minute; however, if closing the menu and coming back, I find the folder I tried to open already open; if I try to open one of its sufolders, the same happens again with the subfolder.

I've read the tutorial at Menu Show Delay Time, but that method doesn't solve my case.

I don't know if there is any coincidence, but when this problem appeared all programs started to stop responding from time to time, more often Firefox.

Accessing Programs In My Start Menu

I have a problem accessing some programs in my start menu. I use Windows Vista Home Premium. Some programs are accessible (such as iTunes) and some are not (such as Nero ShowTime). When I compare the properties of the Start Menu links for the accessible and the nonaccessible programs, I notice differences: In the Properties windows of the nonaccessible programs, there is no "Compatibility" tab and the "Target field" is grayed out, as are the "Open File Location" and "Change Icon" buttons. I don't get an error message when I click on the non-accessible links, I just get nothing. btw, I can access the programs from the Quick Launch bar or from Windows Explorer, but that is a hassle.

Start Menu Headings For The Photoshop Programs Are Highlighted In Yellow

Jan 10, 2008

I installed Photoshop CS3 today on Vista x64 Ultimate and gave it whizz to see if it worked ok - which it did - but i noticed that the start menu headings for the Photoshop programs are highlighted in yellow. Here's a screen grab:

The thing is, when i right-click on the yellow highlights to send the Photoshop icon to my desktop as a shortcut, i get no menu just the Aero mouse cursor rotating for a split-second and then the right-click doesn't work at all nor the shut-down button doesn't work! Now, i got the program off a mate who assured me it was from an original disc, but now i'm not too sure as it has all the hallmarks of a copy with a dodgy attachment - and no, i didn't see the disc in question as i just transfered the data from a folder on his drive onto a USB pen.

Explorer.exe Not Start

Feb 1, 2009

I am running Vista Home Premium on a system that has been stable for some time. Recently I discovered that when I attempt to log into my account it 'opens' to a black screen with only a movable cursor, nothing else. However, my wife's account continues to work normally I would have presumed a Windows update, virus, trojan, spyware, etc., would also affect my wife's account.

I have confirmed the registry key for the Shell is set to 'explorer.exe'. When I open Task Manager explorer.exe is not running. If I attempt to launch explorer.exe via New Task it will not start. I can access my account if I boot in Safe Mode. I have tried MSCONFIG and tried booting with no Startup programs and no Services with no change, still no explorer. System Restore has no restore points prior to 12/22/08 but that's not far enough back to correct the problem. Am I missing anything else I can try to repair this problem, or am I going to have to launch the install CD to try to repair this?
